Titled Amul Manthan, inspired by Shyam Benegal’s film called Manthan, was based on White Revolution that took place in the heart of Gujarat. It celebrated India’s women farmers and their economic independence. The campaign became memorable for its use of the song. It ended by showcasing the model of co-operative organization of milkmaids and farmers with a narrative that said, “Every morning 17 lac women across 9,000 villages, bringing in milk worth Rs.4 crores, are now celebrating their economic independence thanks to the co-operative movement called Amul.” It was one of the first campaigns to bring women to the forefront. Ramayan and Mahabharat attracted more advertisers in the week starting from March 28 to 16 April. Ramayan and Mahabharat attracts more advertisers; sees a 14X and 12X increase in advertiser count respectively

Near the end of 2013, the animated movie <keyword id="6366669" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mahabharat">Mahabharat</keyword> was released and was touted as “India’s most expensive multi-starrer <keyword id="21778" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="animation">animation</keyword> film.” The voice actors included the who’s who of contemporary Indian cinema. Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice to the iconic character of Bhishma; Ajay Devgan was Arjun; Sunny Deol was Bheem and Vidya Balan was Draupadi. None of the actors charged any fee and yet, the movie had a budget of Rs 50 crore. After the first week, it managed to earn just Rs 1.5 crore. 
 
Mahabharat was a phenomenal flop. 
 
But much of it had to do with the low quality animation that people ended up watching on-screen. And the studio blamed for such below-par work was a Juhu-based one called Pen India Pvt Ltd. Surely, there was nothing wrong with the story – Mahabharat is one of the most popular epics in the world. And the voice-acting was top-notch. So the only factors behind the debacle were the quality of animation and marketing. 
 
Outsourcing kills creativity Like many other industries, animation in India earns most of its revenues through outsourced projects from American and European studios. According to a secondary research presented in the <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> Industry Report, the money earned by Indian animation and VFX studios from global projects has steadily increased over the past decade. 
 
While that is good news from a business standpoint, the increasing number of outsourced projects also means that the animators are constantly working under strict deadlines and their project work is always under remote supervision which hardly leaves any room for creative decision-making. For the global studios, the Indian animation talent is akin to a sweatshop where the designs and plans are already in place and the workers are only expected to execute them. Such an environment not only tramples upon creativity but also leaves little time to pursue one’s creative aspirations. The few animators who choose not to work for those studios often find it difficult to earn a decent living. This is because the domestic market for animation is quite small. In 2009, domestic projects only accounted for 30% of the total revenues the industry earned. The rest came from outsourced animation, gaming and VFX work. 
 
Failure to woo the target audience 
As animated movies are relatively new in India, one of the biggest mistakes happened in figuring out the right content for a particular demographic. If you were to look at some of the animated films that came from India and achieved very little success, you might end up thinking – here’s a country where kids love Hindu mythology. 
 
It might seem odd now but that’s exactly what the producers had in mind when they released movies like Ramayan, Chhota Bheem, Ghatotkach, Krishna, etc. All of these feature stories from Hindu mythology and as India has the largest Hindu population, the producers just assumed that these stories would be popular. What a wrong assumption to make! What they don’t realise is that these stories are already known to Indian kids and they are not getting anything new or original out of these films. However, the Indian film industry is partly to blame for this – originality has never been its strong point. 
 Animation film-makers of India need to learn from studios like <keyword id="161299" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pixar">Pixar</keyword>, <keyword id="11201" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Dreamworks">DreamWorks</keyword> and Disney who come up with highly original scripts such as <keyword id="241494" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wall-E">WALL-E</keyword>, Kung-fu Panda, Madagascar, Toy Story, How to Train Your Dragon and more. On the other hand, the Indian audience must change their mindset and start enjoying good animated films. Discarding an animated movie as a ‘cartoon’ film is an indication that most Indian viewers still think that anything animated is meant ‘for the kids.’ If only our people grew up on Japanese Manga and Anime from a very early age… 
 
Training counts Animation can be taught while sketching is a talent that is honed over a longer period of time. So, the first thing wannabe animators need to know is that you need to love art, drawing and sketching. In India, people often choose animation as a career just because it is a booming sector. Five years ago, they might have chosen biotechnology or marine engineering for the same reason. But that’s not the way to go about choosing a career. There are a handful of really good schools in India for learning animation, illustration or design – such as the National Institute of Design (NID), Srishti School of Art and Design, <keyword id="2199190" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="J-J-Institute-of-Applied-Art">J.J. Institute of Applied Art</keyword>, etc. Aspirants should target these schools instead of opting for short-term certificate courses that promise placement. Some of the best Indian animators studied in these well-known institutions. For instance, Vaibhav Kumaresh, a student of NID, is one of the most coveted names in Indian animation. He is the one who created Channel V’s famous Sardar Simpoo Singh Sodhi and the Amaron Battery characters. Gitanjali Rao, an alumnus of J.J. Institute of Applied Art, won an award in <keyword id="6366702" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Cannes">Cannes</keyword> in 2006 for her animated short, Printed Rainbow. 
 
The future of animation in India can go either way. If we can come up with a few studios which will devote resources and talent for consistently creating really good content and art, the production will be on par with the industry leaders. A good marketing team can then sell it to the world. But without such initiatives, animation in India may just end up being a prop for creating logos for production houses and meeting deadlines for other studios who will get all the credit for creativity.

Now owing to the fact that production has been stalled till the lockdown is lifted, OTT platforms are taking a similar route. While ShemarooMe is premiering Bollywood movies every Friday, it has also seen a huge jump in people watching classic movies. “There is a lot of experimentation happening right now -- the audience is actually going back and watching blockbuster movies from the past such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron or older shows like Nukkad. And it’s been consumed by the younger generation too. So, that's opening up a new set of content for a new set of audience who have not been exposed to it till now. Moreover, with gaming seeing a spike across the world, platforms like <keyword id="2214311" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mx-player">MX Player</keyword>, that had recently introduced gaming on its platform, has an edge as people are on the lookout for different modes of entertainment. “We introduced gaming about 8-10 weeks back and in the last five weeks, it has seen a 4X surge in engagement. And we are using that inventory available on our platform to cross promote our own shows. In terms of the number of games played by one user and the time spent by that user on the gaming tab is actually something that we didn't expect and we are actually using that to cross promote our own shows,” said Abhishek Joshi, Head of Marketing and Business Partnerships, MX Player. He also shared that MX Player has recently inked a content deal with Sony Pictures Television and Paramount. “We are the first Indian AVOD platform to have struck such a deal with an international studio.” Tough times are pushing marketers to come up with creative ways to sell their content. Disney+ Hotstar original series Hostages is now airing on Disney-owned TV channel Star Plus. For the first time in history, OTT content is broadcasted on a TV channel. ALTBalaji has also partnered with ZEEL to broadcast its originals such as Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain, Baarish, Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat. Joshi says, “While this integration has happened at an unfortunate time, it will help the OTT players embark on a collaborative journey rather than an either-or strategy, which we have always been speaking about.”

Star TV and Sony take the DD route to bring back Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Aahat, CID and more

More than 20 years after its broadcast, Ramanand Sagar's epic mythological series "<keyword id="951735" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shri-Krishna">Shri Krishna</keyword>" is all set to make a comeback on <keyword id="6408304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword>, the broadcaster announced on Sunday. The show joins other popular epics such as "Ramayan" and "Mahabharat" to be re-run amid the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. "Coming soon: 'Shri Krishna'," the post on DD National channel's official handle read. Created, written and directed by Sagar, the series chronicled the life of <keyword id="3198" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lord-Krishna">Lord Krishna</keyword>. The show was first broadcast on Doordarshan's Metro Channel (DD 2) from 1993, but moved to DD National in 1996. "Shri Krishna" starred actor Sarvadaman D Banerjee as the adult Krishna, while Swwapnil Joshi played the teenage version of the character. The show also starred Deepak Deulkar, Pinky Parikh among others. Doordarshan has plans to bring back 'Shri Krishna' after 20 years

The Economic Survey 2015-16 compared the Indian economy with Chakravyuha from epic Mahabharata as one could enter but not exit. 
 
The survey stated that even though barriers were removed from entry for firms, talent, and technology, less progress was made in relation to exit. 
 
"Over the course of six decades, the Indian economy has moved from socialism with limited entry to marketism without exit," the survey adds. The <keyword id="3261283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-Survey-2016">Economic Survey 2016</keyword> said the challenge was seen in public and private sector both. 
 
"India seems to have a disproportionately large share of inefficient firms with very low productivity and with little exit. This lack of exit generates externalities that hurt the economy," says the survey. 
 
For instance, in fiscal costs, inefficient firms often require government support in the form of explicit subsidies or implicit subsidies. 
It also have political implications as government support to "sick" firms can give the impression that government favors large corporates. 
 
The Economic Survey analysed there were 3 I’s in exit problem 
 
1. Interests: The power of vested interests confers greater power on concentrated producer interests in relation to diffused consumer interests. As a result it becomes difficult to phase out schemes and they become instruments of granting favors. 
 
2. Institutions: Weak institutions increase the time and financial costs of exit. For example, with rising non-performing assets, recourse to debt recovery tribunals (DRTs) has increased. The share of settled cases is becoming small and declining and the accumulated backlog of unsettled cases has increased manifold. Furthermore, inability to punish wilful defaulters questions the legitimacy of all institutions. 
 
3. Ideas/Ideology: The founding ideology of state-led development and socialism makes it difficult to phase out entitlements even as those intended for the poor end up accruing to the relatively better off.

Mumbai, Apr 16 () The Mumbai Police on Thursday used a bit of '90s nostalgia to drive home the point of social distancing amid the coronavirus lockdown. In a creative arrangement of titles of the popular Doordarshan shows, Mumbai Police shared two images with show titles arranged in a manner which read as an advice for people to follow on their official handle. "A simple message that's been just around the 'Nukkad' for decades. #NotJustNostalgia #TakingOnCorona" they captioned the pictures. "'Dekh Bhai Dekh', there's a 'Mahabharat' happening outside. 'Humlog' won't go to 'Nukkad'. We won't let 'Mungeri Lal Ke Haseen Sapne' turn into 'Flop Show,'" the first picture read. In another image, the Mumbai Police used titles of shows, including Shah Rukh Khan's "Circus" and "Fauji", writing, "'Shrimaan, Shrimati', please don't become 'Karamchand' or 'Byomkesh.' Coronavirus is being fought by 'Fauji', don't step out to do 'Circus.'" DCP Pranay Ashok, spokesperson of Mumbai Police, said it's their endeavour to reach out to people with different themes to give messages and using DD shows was one of the ways. "During the period of lockdown, there is a trend of nostalgic serials like 'Mahabharata', 'Ramayan' and other Doordarshan era serials. By using names of these serials we have appealed Mumbaikars not to come of of their homes and stay safe. "We always use current trends to spread our message to Mumbaikars, which are entertaining and also educating them," Ashok told . Recently, the Twitter handle of Mumbai Police also used the popular dialogue of Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor starrer "Stree": "Oh Stree Kal Aana." <ul><li>The Covid-19 disruption in Week 2 continued to show a huge increase in <keyword id="659577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TV-viewership">TV viewership</keyword>, smartphone usership &amp; VOD consumption according to BARC-Nielsen’s insight series titled, <keyword id="8996906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="crisis-consumption">Crisis Consumption</keyword>.</li><li>The current week garnered the highest ever total TV consumption.</li><li>The re-telecast of <keyword id="6373819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramayan">Ramayan</keyword> garnered the highest-ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015.</li></ul> The second week of the national lockdown in wake of the COVID-19 outbreak witnessed the highest-ever TV viewing at 1.20 trillion minutes as average daily viewers grew by 62 million. Also, the time spent on smartphones in Week 2 of the COVID-19 disruption increased by almost 3 hours per week. The findings were a part of the second edition of BARC-Nielsen’s insight series titled, Crisis Consumption. The report further revealed that around 62 million viewers across the country watched television for 4 hours and 40 minutes daily. The average daily reach saw an 11% growth. The total TV consumption across the country witnessed a 37% growth and the viewership grew significantly in the 3 days post the lockdown. Moreover, non-primetime viewership further increased in Week 12 and saw over 70% surge. News and movies witnessed an all–time high growth. GECs saw a 32% surge during non-prime time. Considering viewership of news has gone up substantially as consumers want to stay updated about the evolving situation, the share of news to total TV grew from 7% to 21% Moreover, the kids segment saw maximum viewership in the morning between 10 am and 12 noon. Average Daily FCT in Week 11-12 grew by 6 lakh seconds, which was a growth of 15%. In terms of secotr-wise FCT, food &amp; beverages saw the maximum increase in FCT share percentage followed by personal care and hygiene. Moreover, the return of classic shows like Ramayana led to the evening slot on Sunday recording all time high numbers. The lockdown also resulted in a lot of firsts in the TV viewing history. While news &amp; movies recorded an all-time high growth in viewership, Hindi movies surpassed Hindi GEC in viewership. Also highest viewership was recorded in HSM for any show in Hindi GEC (Fiction/Non-Fiction). Not surprisingly, social distancing also led to a spike in virtual social connectivity. Meanwhile, consumers spent 45% more time on news apps and the news franchise on smartphones grew by 25%. Time spend on video streaming apps grew by 11%.
