<ul class="summary-list"><li>An investigation by the Los Angeles Times revealed financial and ethical failures by the HFPA.</li><li>Major studios like Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia announced they would boycott the <keyword id="2392" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Golden-Globes">Golden Globes</keyword>.</li><li>On Monday, NBC announced it would not air the Golden Globes in 2022.</li></ul><p>The Golden Globes is one of the most revered awards shows in Hollywood with a history that goes back to 1944.</p><p>Recognizing the best in movies and TV, the Globes are run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a non-profit organization made up of a small group of journalists (around 87 members) whose coverage of the industry is read or seen predominantly outside of the US.</p><p>Beginning in 1964, the Globes and the HFPA raised in stature when NBC began airing the ceremony around the country. More casual than the Oscars as the nominees are all sitting at tables and downing champagne through the evening, and unique in that it awards the best in movies and TV in one evening, the awards show has been touted as Hollywood's night to party.</p><p>Currently, the Globes are shown in 167 countries and at its height was the third highest-rated award show behind the Oscars and Grammys.</p><p>But recently the HFPA has been thrust into damage control following a <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-02-21/hfpa-golden-globes-2021">Los Angeles Times exposé</a> that uncovered financial and ethical failures by the organization. It has led to major studios like Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia boycotting the Globes and stars like Mark Ruffalo and <keyword id="6376613" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Scarlett-Johansson">Scarlett Johansson</keyword> calling for change.</p><p>Then a catastrophic blow: <a href="https://www.insider.com/nbc-is-refusing-to-air-the-2022-golden-globe-awards-2021-5">NBC announced Monday</a> it will not air the Globes in 2022.</p><p>Here's a timeline of the HFPA controversy.</p><div type="image" title="Golden Globes Kevin Mazur Getty" height="2733" width="5467" msid="82588297" hostid="261"></div><h2>An exposé by the Los Angeles Times in February uncovered unethical behavior and no Black members in the HFPA</h2><p>The LA Times story exposed what many in Hollywood heard whispers about for decades about the HFPA. <strong style="background-color: #ffff00;"><br /></strong></p><p>It revealed that the organization has a "culture of corruption," as Norwegian journalist Kjersti Flaa said in an antitrust lawsuit against the organization that was dismissed in November 2020.</p><p>According to the story, HFPA members are allowed to accept lavish perks from studios and networks they will later write about.</p><p>The most egregious part of the story highlighted how, in 2019, over 30 HFPA members flew to France to <a href="https://www.insider.com/emily-in-paris-producers-golden-globes-voters-luxury-set-tour-2021-2">visit the set of Netflix's "Emily in Paris"</a> and were treated to a two-night stay at the five-star Peninsula Paris hotel and lunch at the Musée des Arts Forains, a private museum where the show was shooting.</p><p>Despite the first season of "Emily in Paris" finding a lukewarm reception from critics (it has a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/emily_in_paris">63% rating</a> on Rotten Tomatoes), the show received two Globes nominations this year.</p><p>The Times story also revealed that the HFPA has no Black members and the organization had not inducted one in nearly two decades.</p><p>This fueled more criticism of the HFPA for its glaring omission of Black-led TV shows and movies in this year's Globe nominations, including "I May Destroy You" and "Da 5 Bloods."</p><h2>On Golden Globes night, the HFPA responded: 'Black representation is vital'</h2><p>The HFPA always takes a moment out of every Golden Globes show to talk about itself, but this year it had a more somber tone as HFPA president Ali Sar, vice president Helen Hoehne, and former president Meher Tatna went on stage and addressed the world about the controversies within their organization.</p><p>"We celebrate the work of artists from around the globe," said Hoehne. "We recognize we have our own work to do. Black representation is vital. We must have Black journalists in our organization."</p><p>"Everyone from all underrepresented communities [should] get a seat at our table," Tatna said. "And we are going to make that happen."</p><p>Sar concluded by saying that the HFPA needs to "create an environment where a diverse membership is the norm, not the exception."</p><div type="image" title="Ava Duvernay" height="3072" width="4096" msid="82588303" hostid="261"></div><h2>In March, the HFPA promised new diversity efforts. Ava DuVernay voiced her skepticism.</h2><p>Shortly after the Golden Globes aired, the HFPA <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2021/03/golden-globes-hfpa-diversity-times-up-1234621788/">released a statement</a> pledging to make efforts in diversity and inclusion within its membership in the next 60 days.</p><p>The organization noted that it was hiring an "independent expert in organizational diversity, equity and inclusion" to advise them through the process.</p><p>Director Ava DuVernay, who is not a member of the association, was skeptical of the HFPA's plan.</p><p>"So, the board is gonna oversee its own reform?" DuVernay asked in a tweet. "Same board that oversees and benefits from the current practices and has knowingly perpetuated the HFPA's corrupt dealings and racial inequity for decades? Got it."</p><p>The HFPA hired <a href="https://www.goldenglobes.com/articles/hfpa-announces-hiring-expert-advisors">USC professor Dr. Shaun Harper</a> to be its diversity advisor.</p><h2>In April, a former HFPA president called Black Lives Matter a 'racist hate movement'</h2><p>Over a month after the HFPA announced it would be taking strides to bring inclusion within its ranks, the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2021-04-19/former-hfpa-president-faces-a-backlash-over-email-calling-black-lives-matter-a-hate-movement">Los Angeles Times</a> reported that Phil Berk, an HFPA member and former eight-time president, sent out an email to the organization's staff and general counsel criticizing Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors and calling BLM a "racist hate movement."</p><p>Berk, who <a href="https://www.insider.com/hollywood-men-victims-sexual-misconduct-2018-2">Brendan Fraser accused in 2018 of groping his butt at a 2003 HFPA luncheon</a> (an HFPA investigation found Berk's actions were inappropriate but <a href="https://www.gq.com/story/brendan-fraser-says-hfpa-denied-sexual-harassment-claims">intended as "a joke"</a>), shared an article from the conservative site <a href="https://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/2021/04/blm-goes-hollywood-daniel-greenfield/">FrontPage Mag</a> which took issue with Cullors buying a $1.4 million home in Topanga Canyon a year after "race rioters burned buildings and terrorized communities," referring to Black Lives Matter protestors.</p><p>"The house is down the road from one of the homes involved in the Manson murders which seems only appropriate since Manson wanted to start a race war," the story states. "And Black Lives Matter is carrying on Manson's work."</p><div type="image" title="Philip Berk Michael Tran Getty" height="2250" width="3000" msid="82588317" hostid="261"></div><h2>Two days later, Phil Berk was expelled from the HFPA</h2><p>Following the news of Berk's email, the HFPA tried to save face <a href="https://variety.com/2021/awards/news/hollywood-foreign-press-association-phil-berk-1234955963/">by expelling Berk</a>. But things are looking dire for the organization.</p><p>On the same day, its <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/golden-globes-hfpa-in-crisis-as-famed-fixer-di-advisor-quit-exclusive-4169968/">crisis communications firm, Smith &amp; Company, quit</a>. And Dr. Harper, the USC professor hired to be its diversity advisor, resigned.</p><h2>In May, the HFPA unveiled its diversity reform</h2><p>The organization announced it wants to admit 20 new members in 2021 with a specific focus on Black membership. And to also increase membership by 50% over the next 18 months with a goal of recruiting from underrepresented groups.</p><p>"For the past 60 days we have worked hard to come up with a plan of action - culling ideas from the members as well as outside entities - to present a cohesive, comprehensive proposal," the HFPA's board <a href="https://variety.com/2021/film/news/golden-globes-diversity-crisis-hfpa-1234965482/">wrote in a statement</a>. "We have engaged in much-needed, deep introspection with the help and guidance of our outside advisors, experts in diversity and inclusion, and our media partners. Together, we have created a roadmap for transformational change in our organization."</p><div type="image" title="Netflix's Ted Sarandos" height="1716" width="2288" msid="82588325" hostid="261"></div><h2>Days later, Netflix head Ted Sarandos told the HFPA it was 'stopping any activities' with the organization</h2><p>Sarandos sent a letter to the HFPA board explaining that the streaming giant felt its recent steps to build inclusion and diversity wasn't enough.</p><p>"We don't believe these proposed new policies - particularly around the size and speed of membership growth - will tackle the HFPA's systemic diversity and inclusion challenges, or the lack of clear standards for how your members should operate," <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/05/netflix-hollywood-foreign-press-ultimatum-ted-sarandos-diversity-inclusion-controversy-1234752218/">Sarandos wrote</a>. "So we're stopping any activities with your organization until more meaningful changes are made."</p><p>Following the news, Reese Witherspoon and Shonda Rhimes supported Netflix's decision.</p><h2>Amazon said it was boycotting the Globes and HFPA, while Mark Ruffalo tweeted #ChangeIsGolden</h2><p>Soon after the Netflix move, <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/golden-globes-amazon-studios-hfpa-boycott-sincere-significant-reform/">Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke announced</a> that it would stop working with the HFPA and the Globes. <a href="https://variety.com/2021/awards/awards/golden-globes-warnermedia-hbo-warner-bros-boycott-1234969813/">WarnerMedia</a> would also add its name days later to the studios boycotting the group.</p><p>And Ruffalo, who had won a Globe this year for his performance in HBO's "I Know This Much Is True," tweeted that the HFPA should not "resist the change."</p><p>"It's discouraging to see the HFPA, which has gained prominence and profited handsomely from their involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change that is being asked of them from many of the groups that have been most disenfranchised by their culture of secrecy and exclusion," Ruffalo tweeted. "Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past."</p><p>The actor included the hashtag #ChangeIsGolden to the tweet.</p><h2>On May 10, Scarlett Johansson urged Hollywood to take a 'step back' from the HFPA</h2><h2><div type="image" title="scarlett johansson" height="2726" width="3632" msid="82588331" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>The superstar actress, who has been Globes nominated five times over her career, released a statement advocating for Hollywood to <a href="https://www.insider.com/scarlett-johansson-golden-globes-time-to-step-back-2021-5">"step back" from the award show</a>. She also explained why she doesn't take part in HFPA events.</p><p>"As an actor promoting a film, one is expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences as well as awards shows," Johansson said. "In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences."</p><h2>On May 11, NBC announced it will not air the Golden Globes in 2022</h2><p>After decades of airing the awards show, NBC announced it <a href="https://www.insider.com/nbc-is-refusing-to-air-the-2022-golden-globe-awards-2021-5">would not air it next year</a>.</p><p>"We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform," NBC said in a statement. <h2><strong>Instead of battling tourists at Central Park, head to the more low key (and gorgeous) Prospect Park.</strong></h2>

<p>Brooklyn's Prospect Park was created by the same architects - Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux - but they had <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/11/nyregion/11parks.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0" target="_blank">much more free reign with their Brooklyn design</a> and were able to create a real pastoral haven. With woods, a lake, and a mile-long meadow, anyone who visits Prospect Park will forget they're in NYC for a little while.</p>
<h2><strong>Instead of cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery, try the amazing cookies at Levain Bakery.</strong></h2>

A much better option is the beyond-delicious Levain Bakery on the Upper West Side.</p>
<p>The cookies are gigantic (they look more like scones than cookies), and though they cost $4 per cookie, they are the tastiest, softest, and most scrumptious cookies I've ever tried. Try the chocolate chip and walnut cookie and thank me later.</p>
<h2><strong>Instead of going to Century 21 for discounted designer fashions, hit up a real NYC sample sale.</strong></h2>

There's usually always something going on 260 Fifth Avenue (<a href="http://www.260samplesale.com/" target="_blank">sign up for email updates here</a>) or in SoHo - <a href="http://ny.racked.com/tags/sample-sales" target="_blank">Racked NY always has a great rundown</a>.</p>
<h2><strong>Instead of spending a fortune to ice skate at Rockefeller Center, skate at the less-crowded McCarren Rink in Brooklyn.</strong></h2>

That's a total of roughly $40 to skate with 150 other people for an hour and a half.</p>
<p>McCarren Rink in Brooklyn is a better option that is both less crowded and cheap. It costs $8 for adults ($4 for children), skate rental is only $5, and you can skate as long as you want.</p>

There's a wide variety of nightlife, too, from watering holes for cocktails snobs to drunk bowling.</p>
<h2><strong>Instead of sharing a frozen hot chocolate sundae at Serendipity III, have a romantic night at The Chocolate Room.</strong></h2>

<p>If you're not sure what to order, try the brownie sundae and their ice cream sandwiches. All their cakes - from classic chocolate to chocolate almond - are also delicious.</p>
<h2><strong>Instead of Grimaldi's Pizza in DUMBO, head down the street to Juliana's Pizza.</strong></h2>

<p>And while Grimaldi's is just okay, Juliana's is the real gem  - its ingredients are fresh and vibrant, the pizza isn't greasy, and they make a truly amazing sauce. Don't forget to try the homemade Brookie deserts (a combination of a brownie and cookie).</p>
<h2><strong>Instead of seeing sex toys and exhibitionist exhibits at the Museum of Sex, go to a burlesque show at Galapagos Art Space.</strong></h2>

(Photo by Kent Nishimura/Getty Images)</p></div></div>As the Army prepares for 5,300 redundancies, an annonymous <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword> wife contemplates the life to come as a civilian:</p>
<p>My husband calmly informed me last week that, as a Captain in the infantry, he was in the redundancy bracket. He could either volunteer for redundancy and be out of the Army by Christmas, or wait and see whether redundancy would be forced upon him with an exit date of June next year.</p>
<p>My initial reaction was one of utter exhilaration: we could start a whole new adventure, we could go anywhere… Canada had always appealed. I began daydreaming of this new life together: my husband and me, our two young daughters, aged four and 17 months, and, of course, the dogs.</p>
<p>I was stopped in my tracks by the reaction of friends and family. My stepmother, who is struggling to keep her business afloat during this trampoline of a recession, messaged me: “Voluntary redundancy is absolutely only possible when you have a Plan B, and possibly even a Plan C, in place… and preferably running alongside the end of Plan A. Otherwise it’s a bonkers idea.”</p>
<p>Hmm. Three minutes of serious thought revealed to me that not only did we not have a Plan B or Plan C, and given that I’d already been four years out of the job market, putting a plan into action would be nigh on impossible.</p>
<p>After our wedding five years ago, my husband and I lived apart initially. I had an interesting and well-paid job in London which involved travel and meeting people on a daily basis. I had a busy social life, too, with new friends as well as old ones from university. Three weeks before the birth of our first child, I packed some bags and drove to almost the exact middle of nowhere (I can prove it on a map) to begin the rest of my life as an “Army wife”. My newborn daughter and I acquired another new label too: “dependants”. In one fell swoop, I’d taken an axe and destroyed my career and any potential ladder attached to it. There was no risk of falling glass from the ceiling firmly fixed above my head. I had traded in a professional life to be with my best friend and the father of my children, just as hundreds of thousands had before me.</p>
<p>Traditionally, for a woman married to a man in the Army, this is a normal run of events. It is almost as if feminism never happened. Of course, for those wives who are, for instance, teachers, doctors or nurses, continuing to work is far easier, as these are ideal vocations for anyone needing to relocate frequently.</p>
<p>Yes, we’ve enjoyed a privileged life. When my husband isn’t away on operations or exercise, he works within a 10-minute bicycle ride from home and is entitled to far more leave than he ever manages to take. The social life on camp can be fantastic, and I have made several close friends. Our children are discovering the length and breadth of Great Britain, as well as farther afield (thousands of British soldiers and their families are still based in Germany, Belize, Canada, Brunei, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and the Falklands).</p>
<p>The Military Covenant protects our children so that every time we move, there will be a guaranteed place for them at a local school. The repeated house moves can be tense, but it’s more about paperwork. In the past we have lived “behind the wire”, which is in many ways the perfect environment for a young child to grow up in: there is an armed guard on the gate 24 hours a day, speed limits are set at 15mph and there are mazes of tracks perfect for learning to ride a bicycle.</p>
<p>So the deal I made with the Army upon marrying was this: I agreed to adopt an entirely new culture and way of life. I sacrificed my career, moved away from family and civilian friends, and relinquished my God-given right as a female to dabble in interior design (the walls in Army accommodation can be any colour as long as it’s magnolia). In exchange for this, I acquired a husband who was away a lot, often in uncomfortable amounts of danger, but with – and this is the important bit – a secure job until he had served 16 years in the Army (my husband has an intermediate service commission which can be extended to a regular commission, depending on performance, that would “guarantee” his job until the age of 55). During this time, we assumed, I’d be able to retrain for a job more suited to our lives so that once the girls were older, I could again be gainfully employed and contribute to society.</p>
<p>Now that my husband is in the redundancy bracket and the deal I made with the Army is coming perilously close to being broken, how do I feel? Well, how can I feel? Redundancy has been the fate across Britain for nearly three million people in the wake of the global recession. I feel that we truly are “all in it together”. But the threat of redundancy has had an unexpected and troubling effect on me. Even if the loss of job is never actually realised, it has irrevocably broken the trust I bestowed in the Army when I said, “I do” in my parents’ parish church five years ago. The pension, upon leaving the Army, has always been considered a gratefully received “thank you” from the nation for risking life or limb in hellholes around the globe. Redundancy instantly removes the immediate pension a soldier would have received on discharge, and instead a much reduced pension awaits at 65. My mother always told me that life wasn’t fair; but to lose that immediate pension would bring a very real feeling of having been cheated by an organisation, an institution, we’ve been actively encouraged to trust and rely upon.</p>
<p>I tried to rally my husband, to convince him that it wasn’t the end of the world; millions of civilians have been made to feel dispensable, their pensions worth the plunder. His heartbreaking response? “They’ve ruined it. They’ve shifted my job into 'just another’ civilian job; which it’s not.”</p>
<p>I worry that the Army will be left permanently scarred by having broken so great a trust with its loyal members and their families, and that the high regard in which it is held by so many Britons will be diminished for ever. I am fearful for those soldiers who have reached almost institutionalised levels of integration and who will undoubtedly struggle to adapt to entering the civilian world prematurely and against their will. My husband and I are constantly considering options and investigating potential employment channels – just in case. I know – I hope – we will be fine whatever happens.</p>
<p>But I also worry that many Army families will allow the bitterness of betrayal to influence their thoughts and memories of what has, after all, been our provider and way of life for so long. I want to hold onto the good times accumulated during my time as an Army wife which a wife of a civilian can never lay claim to: sipping G&amp;Ts with other mums while multitudes of children eat their supper around long grand tables in the officers’ mess, that delicious post-tour leave when the whole family is flying high because Daddy is finally safely home; trying not to be self-conscious as an entire regiment marches past – and then a dog runs out from the ranks to greet you in a wonderfully overenthusiastic fashion…</p>
<p>There have been very happy days; I wait to see if they will continue.</p>
