<ul><li>Amazon’s Great Indian Festival is the longest this year as the brand hasn't set an end date yet and the sale is likely to go on for a month. </li><li>This year’s sale has already broken some of the records set last year. </li><li>Manish Tiwary, Vice President, Amazon India shares with us some of the trends that the e-commerce giant has seen so far, how the platform is working towards improving overall consumer experience, marketing strategy and much more. </li></ul>Consumer sentiment seems to have picked up during Navratri after seeing a muted affair during Raksha Bandhan and Ganesh Chaturthi. E-commerce firms Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and Snapdeal together sold goods worth $3.1 billion in the first 4.5 days of the first festival season sale, revealed management consultancy Redseer. This growth trajectory of e-commerce platforms in India testifies how customers are increasingly recognising the importance of comfort shopping within closed doors, and after seeing their businesses take a plunge in the first three months of the lockdown, more and more sellers are coming online with the increasing adoption of e-commerce platforms. Similarly, Amazon India has also been seeing a year of firsts in its ongoing Great Indian Festival and is breaking last year’s records already. So far, the platform has recorded the highest number of first time shoppers, saw a 50% increase in new sellers and witnessed the strongest-ever start for SMBs. 91% of its first-time shoppers were from smaller cities who browsed the app in local Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Total iPhones sold on Amazon in one day were more than the total iPhones sold in the entire festive sale period of last year. The sale has also helped Amazon accelerate growth across its portfolio. Over 1 lakh customers bought Amazon devices, Echo and Fire TV devices. Kindle sales were around 2.5X higher than the first day of the sale last year. Manish Tiwary, Vice President, Amazon India calls this year’s Great Indian Festival ‘Bharat’s biggest celebration on Amazon ever’ as Tier II and III towns take the forefront. He further told us some of the trends that the e-commerce giant has seen so far, how the platform is working towards improving overall consumer experience, challenges of breaking the clutter in the e-commerce landscape, marketing strategy, and most demanded products on the platform. Excerpts: Q. The role of engagement and communication has never been more important, especially in today’s digital-first world. How are you making sure your communication during this year's Great Indian Festival is relevant to consumers? These are unprecedented times and COVID-19 has impacted the sense of normalcy for everyone. This Great Indian Festival, our focus remains on providing reliability to customers, ensuring safety of employees and helping sellers as they get back on their feet. These include more than 6,50,000 sellers &amp; SMBs including artisans, women entrepreneurs, emerging Indian brands and local store owners from programs like Karigar, Saheli, Launchpad and Local Shops. At the same time, we want to help customers find everything they need – from the latest mobile phone to groceries and get them delivered safely to their homes. Our campaign with the ‘Khushiyon Ka Darwaza’ symbolizes the joy Amazon’s Great Indian Festival brings in the lives of this entire ecosystem of customers, sellers, delivery associates, brand partners and more. Q. What are some of the exclusive deals you have on the platform to woo consumers? This festive season, lakhs of Small &amp; Medium Businesses (SMBs) are offering unique selection to customers helping them rebuild and accelerate their business in tough times. Over 4 crore products from Small &amp; Medium Businesses (SMBs); products from over 20,000 local shops across 100 cities will be available during the Great Indian Festival. Q. With the on-going festive season, many other platforms will have their Sales days too. How do you then cut the clutter and make sure you win consumers? How will you be different from the other players in the segment? As a customer-obsessed company, we remain focused on ways to serve the customers in the country everywhere and fulfil all their needs. Amazon's ongoing Great Indian Festival has already broken last year's records

Paul Bulcke, global CEO of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> SA, has said that their India unit is recuperating at an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/It-will-take-Nestle-3-years-to-undo-the-Maggi-damage-in-India/articleshow/51120095.cms">unexpectedly faster rate</a> after the setback prompted by <keyword id="2878534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-ban">Maggi ban</keyword> last. The ban had resulted in Maggi, Nestle’s flagship product in India, being off the shelves for five months. 
 
"India is recovering faster than anticipated, although it still weighed on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Dynamics-have-changed-as-Indians-now-prefer-Amul-Mother-Dairy-over-Nestle-PepsiCo/articleshow/51790812.cms">Asia zone's overall performance</a>. In India, the Maggi noodles business gained back market share but the business results were affected by the unfavourable comparatives," Bulcke said while addressing investors after the company's Q1 earnings reports. Nestle follows a calendar financial year of January-December. 
 
Nestle performed the strongest in European and South East Asian markets, as well as in Africa. Organic growth for the Asia, Africa, Oceania (AOA) zone, which Nestle takes as a combined entity in earnings, was 2.1% as compared to 0.5% in the last quarter. 
 
Even though Maggi has regained its market share and has re-established itself as the leader of the noodles segment, the share is significantly lower than what it had before it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Exclusive-Nestle-India-CEO-admits-Maggi-ban-was-the-resultof-a-major-breakdown-in-communication-with-the-Govt/articleshow/49889701.cms">faced the ban</a> in last June. The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority India (FSSAI) had banned Maggi after it was found that it contained <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">more than permissible amount of lead</a>, along with mislabelling of flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG). 
 
It was only after multiple clearances, first by the Bombay High Court then by government labs, that Nestle was allowed to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-food-authority-challenges-lifting-ban-on-Nestles-Maggi/articleshow/49814787.cms">resume the sales</a> of Maggi noodles in November.

Nestle CEO says Maggi is recovering faster than expected after a five-month hitch

Here’s some good news for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi</a> lovers. The instant noodles cleared all tests from laboratories mandated by the Bombay High Court. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a>, in a statement said, “All the 90 samples, covering 6 variants, tested by these laboratories are clear with lead much below the permissible limits.” 
 
It said that the company will start manufacturing and will start selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories.

 <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> claimed that it has conducted over 3500 tests representing over 200 million packs in both national as well as international accredited laboratories and all reports are clear. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">FSSAI</a> had banned sale of Maggi noodles in India, saying it contained excessive lead levels and MSG. 
 
When Maggi was recalled, it cost Nestle Rs 320 crore and another Rs 1,270 crore in brand loss according to global valuation consultancy Brand Finance.

Maggi is COMING BACK!

Encouraged by volume growth, margin improvement and recovery in rural sales, India's top fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are now back to their normal growth cycle as they step up investments as well as spending on advertising and marketing. <keyword id="84065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-companies" source="Orion">FMCG companies</keyword> are chasing volume growth again after a gap of a few quarters, offering higher grammage and price cuts thanks to inflationary pressures softening on key raw materials for everything from soaps to food items. Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Dabur, Marico, Godrej Consumer Products, ITC, Tata Consumer Products and Nestle reported volume recovery in the March quarter and said they expect a gradual pickup in consumption in FY24. "The prospects of a sustained recovery have strengthened. After five quarters of volume decline, the sector has posted volume growth," Marico MD and CEO Saugata Gupta said in the company's earnings conference call. "Urban consumption has been steady while rural is showing some convincing signs of having bottomed out." Foods continue to drive growth for the sector, while the home and personal care segment also entered positive territory after an extended slowdown. Marico, which owns popular brands like Saffola, Parachute and Livon, reported an 18.7 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit to Rs 305 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2023 while sales rose 3.65 per cent to Rs 2,240 crore, driven by single-digit volume growth and moderation in commodity prices. HUL said rural areas have shown improvement with higher value growth sequentially. While HUL's volumes continue to fall, the extent of decline has reduced versus last quarter. "The slowdown in the FMCG market is bottoming out. This improvement was led by volumes, which have turned flat in this quarter, versus a mid-single-digit decline in the December quarter," said HUL CFO Ritesh Tiwari in its earnings call. The makers of popular brands such as Rin, Lux, Surf Excel and Pond's said it expects the price-volume growth to rebalance further. "We expect volumes to recover gradually due to high levels of cumulative inflation and the fact that consumption habits typically recover with a lag," he said. For the March quarter, HUL reported an increase of 12.74 per cent in its consolidated net profit to Rs 2,601 crore. Net sales rose 10.83 per cent to Rs 14,926 crore. However, HUL warned the near-term operating environment is likely to remain volatile due to global slowdown risk and uncertainty related to weather phenomena like El Nino and heatwaves. Abneesh Roy, Nuvama Group Executive Director for Institutional Equities, said the outlook for the <keyword id="495979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg-industry" source="Orion">FMCG industry</keyword> was "positive" with volume growth and improvement in margins for most companies in FY24. "As raw material prices are cooling off, companies shall start paring prices via grammage increase or gradual price reductions. Price growth shall ease while volume growth will improve," he said. Roy also cautioned about the impact of El Nino and the "aggression" from billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd, a known disrupter, which aims to be a big player in the USD 110-billion FMCG segment. Meanwhile, Godrej Consumer reported an 11.47 per cent increase in its India revenue to Rs 1,822.92 crore in the March quarter. This was led by volume growth of 11 per cent. Its home care segment, which consists of household insecticides and air fresheners, grew 14 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively. "We expect to build on the current momentum and deliver volume-led growth along with upfront marketing investments and improvement in profitability," said its Managing Director and CEO Sudhir Sitapati. Britannia Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Varun Berry also expressed optimism. "Volume growth will be certainly much better than this year," he said. On commodity prices, Berry said there is deflation in prices of palm oil, laminates and corrugated material for packing but flour and milk prices are soaring. "There are certain brands and certain packs where we have already initiated price reductions or promotions," he said. In the March quarter, Britannia reported a 47.53 per cent jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 557.60 crore. Its revenue from operations rose 10.93 per cent to Rs 3,892.02. Similarly, Dabur reported volume growth of 11 per cent during the March quarter and 14 per cent for FY23. Its quarterly net profit was Rs 292.76 crore and revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,677.8 crore. "Despite near-term concerns around inflationary pressures, we plan to accelerate the growth momentum by continuing to invest in brand building, innovation, and capabilities that will drive growth," said Dabur India CEO Mohit Malhotra. Other companies also recorded growth. ITC's revenue from the FMCG segment rose 19.34 per cent to Rs 4,951.17 crore from Rs 4,148.62 crore while EBITDA jumped 76 per cent. Nestle, the maker of Maggi, Kitkat and Nescafe, reported an increase of 24.69 per cent in its net profit to Rs 736.64 crore in the March quarter. Sales rose 20.43 per cent to Rs 4,808.40 crore. Tata Consumer reported a 21.12 per cent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs 289.56 crore. Its revenue from operations was up 13.96 per cent at Rs 3,618.73 crore. Tata Consumer said it recorded growth in the India beverages business and food. It had a "strong margin growth and strong topline growth driven both by volume and price," the company said in its earnings call. "We have started seeing volume growth coming back. The impact of inflation and monetary tightening on economic growth and demand seems to be slowing down, but I would keep my fingers crossed and monitor it closely," said Tata Consumer MD and CEO Sunil D'Souza. "In the near term, we are seeing stability." FMCG makers expect sustained recovery in volume and margins with price reduction in FY24

The quarter that ended on March 31 wasn’t a good one for <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>, with the Swiss Trans-national F&amp;B company reporting a 19% decline in net profit. The result is a loss of the ban that flagship instant noodles <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">Maggi</a> faced in the country. 
 
As per the company statement, net profit for the quarter was Rs 259 crore as compared to Rs 320 crore for the corresponding quarter in 2015. 
 
"Results for the quarter have been impacted by the Maggi noodles issue in 2015," the company said in a statement. 
 
Talking of net sales, they dipped 8.5% to Rs 2,296 crore, which was below what analysts had estimated. Not only this, the company's total expenditure too fell 7.2% and stood at Rs 1,856 crore during the quarter. 
 
For the quarter that ended on December 31, 2015, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/WATCH-Nestles-new-ad-featuring-Sania-Mirza-andShoaib-Malik-is-adorable/articleshow/51409354.cms">Nestle India</a> had reported 43.8% year-on-year decline in net profit at Rs 183.19. 
 
The ban on Maggi was placed by the Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had banned after allegations that it contained more lead than allowed, and that the label didn’t provide the correct information regarding the flavour enhancer MSG (monosodium glutamate). It had taken five months for Maggi to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/It-will-take-Nestle-3-years-to-undo-the-Maggi-damage-in-India/articleshow/51120095.cms">return to markets</a>.

Nonetheless, the company is treading on the road to recovery, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nestle-CEO-says-Maggi-is-recovering-faster-than-expected-after-a-five-month-hitch/articleshow/51837924.cms">Maggi regaining leadership</a> with over 50% share within five months of the re-launch last year. However, its market share is much lower as compared to what it had before being banned, which was more than 75%.

Nestle India is yet to recover from the Maggi ban, reports 19% slip in net profits

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a> has sent fresh samples of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> for testing as it resumed production of Maggi recently. This means the instant 2-minute noodles will be back on sale December onwards. 
 The Bombay High Court recently had directed <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to also get fresh samples of Maggi noodles tested by the labs and once they get the approval, Maggi will be back with new packaging, instructions and old taste. 
 
Production of Maggi noodles has, reportedly, resumed in Karnataka, Punjab and Goa. 
 
Maggi noodles was banned in India in June after MSG and excess content of lead was found in the packets. 
 
This dented the image and revenue sales of Nestle India as Maggi used to be its biggest brand, accounting for about 30% of sales at the company. 
 
However, it is expected that Nestle India’s Maggi will recover the losses. The company has started rigorous advertising for Maggi's return. 
 
Edelweiss in a note stated "We appreciate the company's effort to up the ante on advertising and promotions, but this will depress margins in the coming quarters. We believe Nestle is unlikely to garner the earlier 70% share of the noodle pie.”

Maggi will be back in December!

Have you ever thought about an alternative to <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword>? Well, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is mulling over it. 
 
After the two-minute noodles was banned in India over excess lead content and MSG in it, Nestle India has started working hard to come up with a snack that would replace Maggi till it is repositioned. 
 
"With no clarity over when Maggi in its existing form will be back on shelves, Nestle is working on alternate snacking options," one of two persons who confirmed the development told Economic Times, adding “Snacking is a huge opportunity which Nestle doesn't want to vacate, and it already has an existing backend for the culinary business." 
 
While re-launching Maggi could take several months, Nestle India might launch a ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook food. 
 
Nestle was guarded in its response to ET's queries. "We are working hard to resolve the situation and we aim to be back in the market as soon as we can. Adhering to Nestle's rigorous quality policies and testing protocol, we are confident that we will come back soon, ensuring food safety, as we always do," the Nestle spokesperson told the financial daily. 
 
Maggi noodles accounts for a third of Nestle India’s business with sales of over Rs 2,000 crore. 
 
Due to the ban, the plants in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are suspended. 
 
Meanwhile, Nestle India is working together to re-build the brand. Nestle Global Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said that the Maggi products were completely safe and were re-called as consumers faith had shaken. 
 
"Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," he told news agency AFP. 
 
"Any health concerns raised by a credible source such as FSSAI will most certainly damage customer loyalty and consideration of a food brand," said David Haigh, CEO of the London-based brand valuation consultancy.

<keyword id="2934282" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Food-and-Drug-Control-Authority">Gujarat Food and Drug Control Authority</keyword> (FDCA) on Monday said it removed the ban on the sale of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> India’s ‘<keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword>’ noodles after the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> lifted the nationwide ban on it in August. 

	“FDCA had lifted the ban on Maggi in Gujarat after the Bombay High Court passed an order to lift the ban across India. We took the decision based on the court order,” Gujarat FDCA Commissioner H G Koshia said. 
 The <keyword id="6370685" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Government">Gujarat government</keyword> had banned the sale of Maggi for a month in June this year after the lead and monosodium glutamate levels in the noodles were found to be above the prescribed limits. Later, the ban was subsequently extended till September. However, the Gujarat FDCA revoked the ban mid-way in August following court order. On August 13, the Bombay High Court had lifted the nationwide ban imposed by Indian food regulators on Maggi noodles, and asked its manufacturer Nestle India Pvt Ltd to go for a fresh test of samples in three independent laboratories across India. 

	But Maggi is still not available in Gujarat markets, as the company is following court order to get its samples tested from three approved laboratories. The state government had in the first week of June banned Maggi sale in the state after the product failed the food safety test. The government had also asked the company to withdraw all its stock of Maggi from the state. 
 

	At that time, the government claimed that all 27 samples collected from different parts of the state had failed the tests, as lead content was found above the prescribed limit in 14 samples while monosodium glutamate, which should not be there at all, was found in all the samples. 
 

	Nestle India had on Friday said that all samples of Maggi have cleared tests conducted by three laboratories, as mandated by Bombay High Court, paving the way for the instant noodles brand to be back in the market after it was banned over the presence of excess lead. The company said it will now commence manufacturing and will sell “only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories”.

Gujarat government lifts ban on sale of Maggi noodles on Bombay HC's order

Singapore food authorities, after conducting safety tests, concluded that <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> did not pose any health risk and have allowed sale of the instant noodles manufactured in India. 
 
The Straits Times reported that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) informed local importers that sale of the brand's noodles from India may be resumed. 
 
Last week, AVA had advised importers to withhold sales of Maggi while it conducted laboratory tests, in the backdrop of food scare in India that it contained higher-than-permissible levels of lead. 
 
The news report stated that results from AVA's laboratory tests, which cover "a wide range of hazards associated with food" showed that the India-made Maggi noodles met local food safety standards. 
 
Maggi noodles produced in other countries were also tested and results showed that they also met the food safety requirements. 
 
Food products that fail tests will not be allowed for sale, the AVA had earlier said. 
 
Singapore has imported "a small amount" of the brand's noodles manufactured in India. 
 
India has banned the sale of the Maggi instant noodles after MSG and excess levels of lead were found in samples tested in New Delhi and in Uttar Pradesh. However, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> claimed that Maggi was safe and the instant noodles were taken-off shelves as faith of consumers had shaken.

India-made Maggi is perfectly safe in Singapore

Despite finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> safe after testing, the officials have refused to give it a clean chit. 
 
Samples of two-minute Maggi noodles from Goa were sent to a government-run laboratory in Karnataka for re-analysis and it was found that the instant noodles were safe for consumption. 
 
However, Director of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Salim Veljee, refused to give a clean chit. 
 
He said the negative result did not necessarily mean a clean chit for the company's product because of contrary findings made by other state and central government laboratories while testing the Nestle-manufactured noodles, which have been banned in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=goa">Goa</a> as well as across the country. 
 
"The samples of these noodles were subjected for a re-analysis of the said five Maggi noodle products at the Goa State Pollution Control Board laboratory at Patto, Panaji and the results of the analysis were found to be consistent with the findings of the Goa FDA Lab in declaring the lead contents to be below the permissible limit of 2.5 ppm and negative for MSG," Veljee told reporters. 
 
Goa had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">banned sale of Maggi</a> in June 8 and several tonnes of Maggi noodles were destroyed after tests in state-run laboratories across India revealed that the popular snack had excess amounts of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSG">MSG</a> and presence of lead. 
 
On the instructions of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI)</a>, which described the tests conducted in Goa as not up to the mark, new Maggi noodles samples were then sent to the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru, Karnataka for another round of tests, which have only now confirmed the Goa FDA's results. 
 
Veljee added that the CFTRI reports re-confirmed the consistent analytical results findings of the State FDA Goa laboratory, in which all the said five samples of Nestle's Maggie conformed with the Food Safety and Standards Rules/Regulation 2011. 
 
Lead in all the five samples was "reported to be well below the permissible limit as well as negative for the MSG in the said samples, which analysis was performed separately on the noodles and taste maker", he added.

Maggi is safe to eat but no clean chit yet

The Bombay High Court today allowed Nestle to export its Maggi noodles, though its nationwide ban would continue. 
 The court was hearing <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>’s petition challenging <keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>’s current ban of Maggi’s nine variants. The company has also questioned a similar order by the Maharashtra government that prohibits the sale of the snack stating it is unsafe for consumption. 
 
Nestle's attorney Iqbal Chhagla said that by the end of the month the company would destroy 17,000 Crore packets of Maggi. 11,000 Crore out of these are being recalled from the market. 
 
FSSAI and others have filed affidavits to oppose Nestle's petition seeking relief from the current ban.
