What have been your midnight saviour during those hunger laden exam days in college hostels are now posing serious threats to the top notch Bollywood celebrities right from Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dix it and Preity Zinta. 
 
Since last month, Nestle’s flagship product of instant noodles, Maggi is in soup for alleged use of lead. 
 
As per a news report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), district court at Muzzafarpur in Uttar Pradesh has directed police to register an FIR against two Nestle officials and film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dix it and Preity Zinta, who have featured in the Maggi advertisements and arrest them if required. 
 
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ramchandra Prasad directed Kazi Mohammadpur Police Station to register the FIR against the five and investigate the complaint. 
 
The court also directed the police to go for arrest if required in the course of investigation. 
 
The order came during the hearing of a case filed by lawyer Sudhir Kumar Ojha yesterday. 
 
The petition had named Managing Director of Nestle Mohan Gupta, its Joint Director Sabab Alam and the three film stars Amitabh, Madhuri and Preity, who have featured in Maggi ads at different times. 
 
As per the news report, the complainant claimed that he purchased Maggi from a shop at Lenin chowk of Muzaffarpur on May 30 and that he was taken ill after he ate it. This prompted him to file a case against Nestle, the maker of the noodles and the film stars who are the product's brand ambassadors. 
 
Lenin Chowk falls under Kazi Mohammadpur police station. The case has been filed under IPC sections 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), 276 (sale of drug as a different drug or preparation) and 420 (cheating and dishonesty), confirmed the PTI news report.

Maggi row:  Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta and Madhuri  Dixit may be arrested

Finding itself dipped in soup, <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>’s brand of noodle, Maggi has switched on it’s 2-minute damage control mode. The social media storm over unsafe consumption of Maggi due to high content of controversial ingredient monosodium glutamate (MSG) seemed to have no ending. 
Nestle defended it saying, the batch was manufactured in February 2014 and had reached the best-before date in November. One batch contains about 200,000 packs. As per a news report in The Economic Times the company has said its practice is to collect stock near the expiry date from distributors and retailers. 
 
A huge furore on media broke out on April 30 when the food authorities in Lucknow asked Nestle to recall one batch of Maggi noodles after tests showed it contained seven times higher levels of lead than permissible and traces of MSG. 
 On being asked by the financial daily, a Nestle <keyword id="6357308" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="spokesperson">spokesperson</keyword> said over email, “"We are confident that these packs are no longer in the market. The company does not agree with the order and is filing the requisite representations with the authorities.” 
 
There are no other orders to recall Maggi noodles in the market, the company said. "We have in place strict food safety and quality controls including thorough quality checks at each stage of our raw material sourcing and manufacturing process. This includes comprehensive testing to ensure that Maggi noodles comply with all applicable food safety laws," the statement added. 
 While many <keyword id="2863866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tweeteratti">Tweeteratti</keyword> felt nostalgic learning about the ban on their saviour of midnight hunger Maggi, Nestle said that it regularly checks its quality as part of quality control process. 
 
The company told the ET, it doesn't add MSG to Maggi noodles sold in India and this is stated on the product. "However, we use hydrolysed groundnut protein, onion powder and wheat flour to make Maggi noodles sold in India, which all contain glutamate. We believe that the authorities' tests may have detected glutamate, which occurs naturally in many foods," the company said.

As per a news report by The Economic Times, these brands are preparing to limit any collateral damage by declaring more ingredient details on packaging, highlighting product safety in ads and increasing engagement with consumers through social media.

The Kerala government has banned the sale of the product through state-owned outlets. Haryana has ordered laboratory testing of samples. 
 The <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-Safety">Food Safety</keyword> and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), <keyword id="222693" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-National">the national</keyword> food regulator, is examining samples of Maggi noodles and is expected to report results in a few days. 
 
As Maggi is undergoing a horrific phase, other food companies are preparing how to cope with this issue, which has once again brought food safety to the centre stage. 
 "You never know which <keyword id="242659" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-inspector">food inspector</keyword> will come next and examine our products in which part of the country. We have to be best prepared for something like this," the CEO of a multinational food giant told the ET on condition of anonymity. Some companies have already swung into action. <keyword id="44672" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pepsi">Pepsi</keyword>Co, which makes the Pepsi and Mountain Dew fizzy drinks and Kurkure snacks, has stepped up communication with consumers through packaging and social media, said an executive. 
 Mayank Shah, group product <keyword id="2682154" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="manager-at-the-country">manager at the country</keyword>'s biggest biscuit maker <keyword id="235733" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parle-Products">Parle Products</keyword>, said the episode served as a warning for all food makers. "With new guidelines on food safety expected, we are planning to engage with consumers a lot more and talk to them consistently through ads and declarations, instead of waiting for something like this to happen. It's critical to keep communication with key stakeholders constant and transparent," he said. 
 
There have been times in the past when controversies relating to food safety have taken a toll on the industry. Soft drinks sale fell by almost 70-80% after pesticide residue was found in them in the mid-2000s. Similarly, sales of Cadbury chocolates dropped by more than half over contamination issues in 2003. 
 The <keyword id="162481" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="marketing-head">marketing head</keyword> of a global foods firm, who didn't want to be named, told the ET, there was an urgent need to be better prepared. "We are preparing point-of-sale material to be supplied at stores, where we will have banners declaring the ingredients in our products. We plan to insert one liners in our ads, talking about safety and health, and not just taste," he said. 
 Yum Brand's general manager <keyword id="2881197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unnat-Verma">Unnat Verma</keyword> told the financial daily, his restaurant chains will engage more closely with consumers on the issue of product safety. Yum Brands owns Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. 
 
Retail trade executives have confirmed that sales of Maggi noodles dropped 60-70% in the past two weeks. "Consumer offtake has been severely impacted. Maggi noodles is barely moving off shelves. Promotions don't seem to be working too," said one.

Maggi’s soup turns sour and bitter! Nestle’s baby food formula Nan found with live larvae

Gujarat Government has today banned the sale of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s instant noodle brand 'Maggi' for a month in the state after the product failed the food safety test, asking the company to withdraw all its stock of <keyword id="13633" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maggie">Maggie</keyword> from the state. 
 Apart from Maggi, the state government also tested one sample each of instant <keyword id="60202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Noodles">noodles</keyword> of <keyword id="17095" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunfeast">Sunfeast</keyword> and S K Foods and has banned the latter for a month as high lead content of 4 PPM was found in it. 
 
"Twenty seven samples collected from different parts of the state were tested by Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration. The test has shown that lead was present above the prescribed limit while Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) was also present," Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel told PTI. 
 
Of the 27 samples, lead content in 14 of them was found to be 2.8 PPM to 5 PPM (particle per million), which is above the prescribed limit of 2.5 PPM. Presence of excess lead is harmful for health, he said. 
 
"Monosodium glutamate, which should not be present in the product, was found in all the samples tested. For these reasons, the government has banned the sale and distribution of Maggi noodles for one month in the state. The government has also informed Nestle to withdraw all its Maggi stock from Gujarat," Patel said. 
 
He said the health department will conduct inspections across the state to enforce the ban and action will be taken against those selling the product in any part of the state. 
 
"Sample of Sunfeast passed the lead test, but traces of monosodium glutamate were found in it. We will test more samples of Sunfeast before taking any action on its instant noodle," he said.

After Delhi and Uttarakhand, Maggie exiled from Gujarat too

Just when India was recovering from the bitter taste of <keyword id="2894644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MaggieinSoup">#Maggieinsoup</keyword>, Indians got another health risk warning. Days after lead was found in instant food Maggi, an analysis, done by <keyword id="178996" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Metropolis-Healthcare">Metropolis Healthcare</keyword>, of blood samples collected over a period of one year from across the country has revealed that over 23 per cent of the total samples tested positive with <keyword id="520366" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="lead-poisoning">lead poisoning</keyword>. 
 
 "A pan-India analysis of 733 blood samples collected over last one year has revealed that 23.47 per cent (172 samples) of the total samples tested positive with Lead poisoning," Dr Sandeep Warghade, Consulting Pathologist Metropolis Healthcare told PTI. He added that lead poisoning can be hard to detect and even people <keyword id="6366244" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="WHO">who</keyword> look healthy can have high levels of lead. 
 
 
"At high levels of exposure, lead damages the brain and central nervous system and can lead to coma, convulsions and even death. Signs and symptoms of lead poisoning usually don't appear until dangerous amounts have accumulated," Warghade added. 
 
 
According to a WHO study, lead exposure is estimated to account for 1,43,000 deaths per year with the highest burden in developing regions. 
Lead poisoning is a cumulative toxicant, particularly harmful to young children and can affect multiple body systems, he said. Major sources of blood lead include leaded contaminated soil, drinking water, petrol emissions, household dust, battery recycling, silver refining, paints (especially yellow), pigments, printing presses, ceramic pottery glazes, cosmetics, colours (including vermilion, spices, Holi colours), crayons and painted pencils, plant foods. In growing children, it causes low IQ, hyperactivity, attention deficit, learning disabilities and anaemia, he said. 
 
 
Warghade cautioned that lead poisoning cases in young children are high as they tend to lick or eat lead-containing paint when it peels off the walls or while playing with toys. 
 
 
Lead from a mother's blood can pass to the foetus during pregnancy, possibly giving rise to genetic disorders. 
 
 
"Exposure of pregnant women to high levels of lead can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and low birth weight, as well as minor malformations. Women with high blood lead levels develop early osteoporosis, lower backache, joint pain and persistent anaemia," he said.

Giving an example of an innovative solution, Das added, “Just like the Hot Dot sticker can assure if your Pizza is delivered hot, in coming days there will be packaging seals that will tell you if your parcel has been opened during delivery, to reassure consumers that their food is untouched and safe to consume. There is an increasing need for such innovation.” Deshpande also advised keeping it real. She said, “Real solutions that work hard to deliver peace of mind to the consumers is the only way forward. I would never advise anything that is superficial because that will not last and will do no good.” Arnab Ray, Creative Director, Landor said that there is a lot more that brands can do to establish trust. He said, “Brands can invest on on-pack interventions which call out precautions taken across the supply chain level, seal of trust to call out hygiene at manufacturing levels, responsible pack disposal callouts, with physical absence of sales persons packs can have DIY instructions on usage etc to name a few. Another important intervention is Brand Voice during these times. Brands can adopt a more empathetic tone to ease the minds of the consumers. For most brands, packaging has been designed keeping a brick and mortar experience in mind, but brands should do well to modify or develop secondary packaging that caters well to ecommerce and other online delivery models.” Have brands forgotten about the environment? For the last few years, we have seen many brands become more environment-friendly. There has been an increasing focus on sustainability. Globally, brands like Diageo, Unilever Limited have started reevaluating their packaging to put the environment first. However, the pandemic has forced many brands to prioritise consumer’s safety and keep their concerns for the environment and plans to launch green packaging on hold. From using gloves while cleaning surfaces to one-time packaging and even PPE kits, everything is made of plastic now. However, Das says that this is just a temporary phase and brands will go back to following sustainable practices post-COVID. “While the focus on sustainable, recyclable and reusable packaging has been growing over the past few years, the priorities have clearly been shifting during these uncertain times, though I believe temporarily. While we shunned single-use packaging due to its wastefulness, now consumers are more comfortable with it as it seems more hygienic because of lesser/limited human-handling involved and the potential risk of virus transmission is minimised,” said Das. Adding on how lack of infrastructure is the main reason behind this neglect towards the environment, Das said, “This only proves that the current infrastructure is unable to supply <keyword id="6660763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sustainable-packaging">sustainable packaging</keyword> options to meet the increased demand. That doesn’t mean we should stop advocating sustainable and recyclable packaging. Covid has only reminded us that there is a long way to go on sustainability. With the lockdown in place and increased in-home consumption, there is also a possibility that consumers become more environmentally conscious as they see higher than normal packaging in their own home trash that cannot be reused or recycled.” Landor’s Ray opines that the pandemic has put sustainability on the back burner. “While everyone does talk about sustainable packaging, the increase in plastic due to double packing, home delivery in plastic containers etc is setting the efforts on sustainable packs a few years back. Brands focussing on sustainable products and their packaging are far and few in between. The world has other, more immediate and pressing issues at the moment,” said Ray. Deshpande said that the need for hygiene and sustainability is here to stay but India lacks infrastructure. “We have no choice but to migrate to sustainable solutions and circular economy. As designers, we are constantly in search of materials that provide long-term hygiene efficacy, materials or processes that do least harm to the ecology and propose them to our client partners. The key is in not just finding materials or developing solutions. The challenge lies in finding suppliers of sustainable alternative materials and convertors who can process large scale efficient print &amp; packaging output. This part is not aligned in India yet. So it becomes impossible for a large brand that requires very high output to align completely with sustainable solutions,” said she.
