The quarter that ended on March 31 wasn’t a good one for <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>, with the Swiss Trans-national F&amp;B company reporting a 19% decline in net profit. The result is a loss of the ban that flagship instant noodles <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">Maggi</a> faced in the country. 
 
As per the company statement, net profit for the quarter was Rs 259 crore as compared to Rs 320 crore for the corresponding quarter in 2015. 
 
"Results for the quarter have been impacted by the Maggi noodles issue in 2015," the company said in a statement. 
 
Talking of net sales, they dipped 8.5% to Rs 2,296 crore, which was below what analysts had estimated. Not only this, the company's total expenditure too fell 7.2% and stood at Rs 1,856 crore during the quarter. 
 
For the quarter that ended on December 31, 2015, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/WATCH-Nestles-new-ad-featuring-Sania-Mirza-andShoaib-Malik-is-adorable/articleshow/51409354.cms">Nestle India</a> had reported 43.8% year-on-year decline in net profit at Rs 183.19. 
 
The ban on Maggi was placed by the Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had banned after allegations that it contained more lead than allowed, and that the label didn’t provide the correct information regarding the flavour enhancer MSG (monosodium glutamate). It had taken five months for Maggi to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/It-will-take-Nestle-3-years-to-undo-the-Maggi-damage-in-India/articleshow/51120095.cms">return to markets</a>.

Nonetheless, the company is treading on the road to recovery, with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Nestle-CEO-says-Maggi-is-recovering-faster-than-expected-after-a-five-month-hitch/articleshow/51837924.cms">Maggi regaining leadership</a> with over 50% share within five months of the re-launch last year. However, its market share is much lower as compared to what it had before being banned, which was more than 75%.

Nestle India is yet to recover from the Maggi ban, reports 19% slip in net profits

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a> has sent fresh samples of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi">Maggi noodles</a> for testing as it resumed production of Maggi recently. This means the instant 2-minute noodles will be back on sale December onwards. 
 The Bombay High Court recently had directed <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> to also get fresh samples of Maggi noodles tested by the labs and once they get the approval, Maggi will be back with new packaging, instructions and old taste. 
 
Production of Maggi noodles has, reportedly, resumed in Karnataka, Punjab and Goa. 
 
Maggi noodles was banned in India in June after MSG and excess content of lead was found in the packets. 
 
This dented the image and revenue sales of Nestle India as Maggi used to be its biggest brand, accounting for about 30% of sales at the company. 
 
However, it is expected that Nestle India’s Maggi will recover the losses. The company has started rigorous advertising for Maggi's return. 
 
Edelweiss in a note stated "We appreciate the company's effort to up the ante on advertising and promotions, but this will depress margins in the coming quarters. We believe Nestle is unlikely to garner the earlier 70% share of the noodle pie.”

Maggi will be back in December!

<keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> chief <keyword id="225478" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paul-Bulcke">Paul Bulcke</keyword> said he has learnt good lessons from India's ban on the firm’s hugely popular <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles over a <keyword id="6467758" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="health-risk">health risk</keyword> and is now working to restore its image. He insisted that Maggi was 100% safe. 

	Bulcke further said that the packaged food was unfairly fingered by many around the world as a health scare, reported AFP. 
 

	The Switzerland-based food giant's reputation took a bashing "because it's a big brand and that (ban) made a lot of waves," the Belgian chief executive told AFP in an interview.
 On June 5, India's <keyword id="109212" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-Safety">food safety</keyword> regulator banned Maggi as tests showed that the noodles contained excessive amount of lead which is hazardous for health. 

	The largest food company by revenues is now challenging the order and is in the process of destroying over 27,000 tonnes of Maggi noodles after halting production.
 

	There were reports that Nestle India has decided to destroy the recalled Maggi noodle stocks at cement plants nationwide.
 

	According to the company, the ban had led to $50.5 million worth of goods being withdrawn. 
 Nestle had already announced it was pulling the product from sale when the Food Safety and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> imposed a ban following similar moves by some state governments. 

	"One can have facts on one's side but it's the perception that counts. Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. We have to reconnect with consumers," he told the news agency. 
 According to <keyword id="130196" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Brand-Finance">Brand Finance</keyword>, a consultancy firm, Maggi is set to lose over $200 million in brand value following the setback in India. 

	Maggi was previously valued at $2.4 billion, Brand Finance said, adding that it had ranked the noodle manufacturer as the 23rd most valuable food brand in the world.
 

	"The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," said Bulcke, who took over as Nestle's chief executive in 2008.
 

	"We are doing all we can to make contact with Indian authorities at the earliest," he said.
 

	Nestle notched up sales of $14.4 billion in ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook meals last year, the third most profitable sector for the company after soft drinks and milk products and ice cream.

Nestle chief working to restore company’s image after Maggi ban

The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>) along with several states banned <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>'s <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> instant noodles in June, but the company did not get some of the test reports based on which authorities banned the popular noodles in the country, a company executive told the Economic Times. 

	Moreover some of the reports were not shared with Nestle before the announcement of the ban and they have now started trickling in, he added. 
 

	A company spokesperson revealed that no test reports were sent to it before June 5, 2015 when the ban was announced, except one from a Kolkata laboratory for a single sample of Maggi noodles sent by the Uttar Pradesh FDA in April. 
 

	"...and for that report, we had made our representation on the improper testing procedure," the spokesperson said in an email, responding to questions from ET. 
 

	The ban proved to be detrimental for the company. Maggi raked in over Rs 2,000 crore in annual revenue for the company. While that has stopped now, it spent Rs 320 crore to recall the product. 
 

	Global valuation consultancy Brand Finance estimates another Rs 1,270 crore in brand loss. Nestle claims it did not get a chance to explain its stand before FSSAI and state authorities that banned the product alleging excessive levels of lead in it and mislabeling on the pack. 
 

	According to industry experts, it was unfair not to share the test reports with the company before taking such an action. 
 

	Moreover, the delay in sharing results raised questions on the test procedures, since the UK, Singapore and Canada have found Maggi imported from India safe to eat. 
 "The way the matter played out was unfair to Nestle. The company wasn't given a chance to prove themselves," said <keyword id="2867937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashwin-Bhadri">Ashwin Bhadri</keyword>, chief executive at <keyword id="1459500" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Equinox-Labs">Equinox Labs</keyword>, which specialises in food testing and works closely with FSSAI on food safety compliance. 

	"Unfortunately, the issue isn't just about Maggi anymore. The controversy has had a global impact and the world is looking at India brands through the scanner,” he added. 
 

	Nestle executives raised the issue at a meeting they had with FSSAI officials on Wednesday. 
 

	An FSSAI representative present at the meeting said ideally the company should have received a letter informing it about the product not clearing the tests done and the reports of the tests should also have been shared with it. 
 

	Nestle announced that it was withdrawing Maggi noodles on June 5. But, on the same day FSSAI ordered the company to recall and stop manufacturing the product. 
 The company later approached the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> to seek clarity on the interpretation of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Foul play with Maggi? Nestle says FSSAI didn’t share test results with it

The Friday morning <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> had ‘MaggiBan’ trending in a different way. While till date it was the state governments taking decision to ban the instant noodles, it is the first time when <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>, the makers of Maggi have officially decided to put their products off the shelves. Having created a lot of hullabaloo over usage of lead in the Maggi Masala above prescribed limit, Nestle’s decision to keep Maggi out of the market is being assumed as an emergency damage control measure. 
 
"The trust of our consumers and the safety of our products is our first priority," the group said in a press statement. 
 "Unfortunately, recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an <keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="environment">environment</keyword> of confusion for the consumer, to such an extent that we have decided to withdraw the product off the shelves, despite the product being safe." 
 
Putting Maggi off the market isn’t enough for Nestle. The Swiss company has asked the local executives in India not to talk publicly about developments. Sources have confirmed The Economic Times, They have been told not to engage directly with stakeholders, trade partners, dealers and distributors without approval. "Any engagement needs to be approved and vetted by the company's legal team only," said one of the officials mentioned above. <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>'s contribution to the Swiss firm's global revenues is barely 1.8%. The Maggi brand contributes about a third of the Indian unit's annual sales of Rs 9,500 crore. "India is an emotional country... the reaction to this issue can't be clinical or detached, which is how it is coming across so far," <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> of a top multinational consumer goods firm told the ET. The financial daily couldn’t reach Nestle for immediate comment. 
 "This was the fastest growing segment for Nestle over the past few years and was reporting positive volume growth compared to the decline reported by the company's other business segments," Abneesh Roy, <keyword id="150418" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="associate-director">associate director</keyword> at <keyword id="6375566" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edelweiss-Securities">Edelweiss Securities</keyword> told the ET. "Hence, in the light of the recent news we downgrade the stock to 'reduce' from 'hold' and rate it sector 'sector underperformer'." 
 
Reviving the brand will involve investing heavily in communications. "Legal costs/promotions will also inch up, which will take a toll on margins," Roy added.

#MaggiBan: Nestle discontinues Maggi from the market. Nestle employees keeping mum

Suppliers of spices and flour to <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> are in the mid of nowhere ever since the instant <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> noodles got banned from the Indian market. Following cancelled orders, unpaid bills and uncertainty over the future of business with <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> India, suppliers are facing a loss of Rs 15 crore every week. 
 As per a report published in Economic Times, <keyword id="2900210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paras-Spices">Paras Spices</keyword>, a Punjab-based firm which has been working with Nestle since last three decades and supplies close to 200 tonnes of spices to Nestle every month, has retrenched around 300 temporary workers in its production unit. The firm that earns around 40% of its revenue from Nestle has shut the production lines catering to Nestle. "The ban has affected us both in terms of volumes and value," said Mahesh Pathak, Business Head, Paras Spices. 
 
If reports are to be believed, about 70-80 flour mills across nation, which supplies nearly 1,800 tonnes of flour every day to Nestle's five plants, have also been hit hard. 
 
“Nestle has not just cancelled its orders, but it has also asked the suppliers to take back their previous supplies because it doesn’t uses food items older than six days,” said VK Bansal, senior Vice-President at Roller Flour Millers' Federation of India. "The company officials are not available since the crisis began," Bansal informed. 
 
Analysts expect Nestle to recover from the crisis in the long term and put Maggi noodles back on retail shelves. But they doubt if the Rs 2,000-crore brand will remain as popular as it has been because the product ban may impact consumer perception about its safety and health benefits.

Maggi Ban: Wheat, spices suppliers facing Rs 15 crore loss every week

Weeks after India banned <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword> and ordered its manufacturer to pull thousands of packets from stores, the UK's <keyword id="33543" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Food-Standards-Agency">Food Standards Agency</keyword> (FSA) has found the product imported from India safe for consumption; says it does not contain excess of <keyword id="23204" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="lead">lead</keyword>. The food agency conducted tests on various samples as a precaution following a ban on the <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> product in India, reported the Economic Times. 

	"The FSA can confirm that results from testing samples of Maggi Noodles in the UK have all found that levels of lead in the product is well within EU permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers," the financial daily reported, quoting FSA on its website. 
 Sale of Maggi noodles were banned in India after the Food Safety and <keyword id="179673" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Standards-Authority-of-India">Standards Authority of India</keyword> found lead beyond permissible limits and cases of mislabeling of monosodium glutamate content on the packet. Meanwhile, Nestle informed the FSA that the only variety of Maggi Noodles imported into the UK from India was the 'masala flavour'. The FSA tested several flavours from the Maggi noodles range including the masala flavor and found the levels of lead to be well within <keyword id="6355110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="European-Union">European Union</keyword>'s permissible levels. It tested samples collected from Nestle, local and port authorities of the UK. <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is also preparing a blueprint for a possible re-launch of the Maggi instant noodles. Experts feel the issue of the recall and ban on the noodles might be resolved in the next three to six months. The <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> recently allowed Nestle India to export Maggi noodles but did not lift the ban on its local sales. 

	A Nestle India spokesperson told ET: "We note that the UK Food Standards Agency cleared Maggi noodles after reviewing results from around 900 samples." 
 Its finding that "levels of lead in the product is well within EU permissible levels and would not be a concern to consumers comes after regulatory authorities in other countries including Singapore, Australia and <keyword id="22501" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-Zealand">New Zealand</keyword> also cleared the product", the spokesperson said.

The ban had resulted in Maggi, Nestle’s flagship product in India, being off the shelves for five months.

Nestle follows a calendar financial year of January-December. 
 
Nestle performed the strongest in European and South East Asian markets, as well as in Africa. Organic growth for the Asia, Africa, Oceania (AOA) zone, which Nestle takes as a combined entity in earnings, was 2.1% as compared to 0.5% in the last quarter. 
 
Even though Maggi has regained its market share and has re-established itself as the leader of the noodles segment, the share is significantly lower than what it had before it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Exclusive-Nestle-India-CEO-admits-Maggi-ban-was-the-resultof-a-major-breakdown-in-communication-with-the-Govt/articleshow/49889701.cms">faced the ban</a> in last June. The Food Safety &amp; Standards Authority India (FSSAI) had banned Maggi after it was found that it contained <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maggi-is-in-trouble-again/articleshow/51344594.cms">more than permissible amount of lead</a>, along with mislabelling of flavour enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Nestle CEO says Maggi is recovering faster than expected after a five-month hitch

Nestle is destroying &#163;32 million worth of its most popular noodles

In a major relief of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nestle+india">Nestle India</a>, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bombay+high+court">Bombay High Court</a> today gave conditional relief to the Swiss company and lifted ban of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maggi+ban">Maggi noodles</a>. 
 
The court questioned the authority of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FSSAI">FSSAI</a> in banning Maggi and asked it to justify the ban, while ordering fresh tests to be conducted on the noodles. 
 
Three labs have been asked to test samples of Maggi noodles within six weeks and as per the court. Nestle can start manufacturing Maggi if tests find lead within permissible limits. 
 
Meanwhile, the US health regulator USFDA said its tests have found the lead level in the popular instant food within acceptable levels for US consumers. 
 
In an e-mail statement, a USFDA spokesperson said that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FDA">FDA</a> tested a limited number of samples for lead contamination and did not find any levels that present a public health concern for US consumers, putting rumours to rest. 
 
Recently, the government asked Nestle to pay damages of Rs 640 crore for selling "defective and hazardous" Maggi noodles. 
 <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> had recalled Maggi packets as MSG was found in the two-minute noodles and excess lead.

Ban on Maggi lifted temporarily. Conditions apply

The Bombay High Court today allowed Nestle to export its Maggi noodles, though its nationwide ban would continue. 
 The court was hearing <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword>’s petition challenging <keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>’s current ban of Maggi’s nine variants. The company has also questioned a similar order by the Maharashtra government that prohibits the sale of the snack stating it is unsafe for consumption. 
 
Nestle's attorney Iqbal Chhagla said that by the end of the month the company would destroy 17,000 Crore packets of Maggi. 11,000 Crore out of these are being recalled from the market. 
 
FSSAI and others have filed affidavits to oppose Nestle's petition seeking relief from the current ban.

Nestle allowed to export Maggi banned in
India

<keyword id="2934282" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Food-and-Drug-Control-Authority">Gujarat Food and Drug Control Authority</keyword> (FDCA) on Monday said it removed the ban on the sale of <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword> India’s ‘<keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword>’ noodles after the <keyword id="48485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-high-court">Bombay High Court</keyword> lifted the nationwide ban on it in August. 

	“FDCA had lifted the ban on Maggi in Gujarat after the Bombay High Court passed an order to lift the ban across India. We took the decision based on the court order,” Gujarat FDCA Commissioner H G Koshia said. 
 The <keyword id="6370685" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Government">Gujarat government</keyword> had banned the sale of Maggi for a month in June this year after the lead and monosodium glutamate levels in the noodles were found to be above the prescribed limits. Later, the ban was subsequently extended till September. However, the Gujarat FDCA revoked the ban mid-way in August following court order. On August 13, the Bombay High Court had lifted the nationwide ban imposed by Indian food regulators on Maggi noodles, and asked its manufacturer Nestle India Pvt Ltd to go for a fresh test of samples in three independent laboratories across India. 

	But Maggi is still not available in Gujarat markets, as the company is following court order to get its samples tested from three approved laboratories. The state government had in the first week of June banned Maggi sale in the state after the product failed the food safety test. The government had also asked the company to withdraw all its stock of Maggi from the state. 
 

	At that time, the government claimed that all 27 samples collected from different parts of the state had failed the tests, as lead content was found above the prescribed limit in 14 samples while monosodium glutamate, which should not be there at all, was found in all the samples. 
 

	Nestle India had on Friday said that all samples of Maggi have cleared tests conducted by three laboratories, as mandated by Bombay High Court, paving the way for the instant noodles brand to be back in the market after it was banned over the presence of excess lead. The company said it will now commence manufacturing and will sell “only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories”.

Gujarat government lifts ban on sale of Maggi noodles on Bombay HC's order

Have you ever thought about an alternative to <keyword id="726194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="maggi-noodles">Maggi noodles</keyword>? Well, <keyword id="6356830" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nestle-India">Nestle India</keyword> is mulling over it. 
 
After the two-minute noodles was banned in India over excess lead content and MSG in it, Nestle India has started working hard to come up with a snack that would replace Maggi till it is repositioned. 
 
"With no clarity over when Maggi in its existing form will be back on shelves, Nestle is working on alternate snacking options," one of two persons who confirmed the development told Economic Times, adding “Snacking is a huge opportunity which Nestle doesn't want to vacate, and it already has an existing backend for the culinary business." 
 
While re-launching Maggi could take several months, Nestle India might launch a ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook food. 
 
Nestle was guarded in its response to ET's queries. "We are working hard to resolve the situation and we aim to be back in the market as soon as we can. Adhering to Nestle's rigorous quality policies and testing protocol, we are confident that we will come back soon, ensuring food safety, as we always do," the Nestle spokesperson told the financial daily. 
 
Maggi noodles accounts for a third of Nestle India’s business with sales of over Rs 2,000 crore. 
 
Due to the ban, the plants in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Goa and Himachal Pradesh are suspended. 
 
Meanwhile, Nestle India is working together to re-build the brand. Nestle Global Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said that the Maggi products were completely safe and were re-called as consumers faith had shaken. 
 
"Food has never been safer. But there is this perception and we have to work on that. The only thing that interests me is to have the product back as soon as possible and that things are cleared up," he told news agency AFP. 
 
"Any health concerns raised by a credible source such as FSSAI will most certainly damage customer loyalty and consideration of a food brand," said David Haigh, CEO of the London-based brand valuation consultancy.
