10 Great Docking Stations For Your Phone, Tablet, And Laptop

Microsoft says this makes it more functional than an Apple iPad, while still being more versatile and flexible than an Apple MacBook. </strong></li></ul><p>Meet the Microsoft Surface Go, a teeny-tiny new 1.15-pound laptop/tablet hybrid with a 10-inch screen that can fit in a handbag, fanny pack, or maybe even a particularly deep pocket. </p><p>Surface Go pricing starts at $400, but don't be fooled: Just as with the bigger, more powerful Surface Pro, you're going to want Microsoft's specially-made $99 keyboard cover to get the most out of the Surface Go. In other words, you're looking at $500, all-in, for the Surface Go setup you really want. You'll be able to buy it August 2nd.</p><p>I got to play with one, briefly, a few weeks ago, and my first impression is that Microsoft has done a good job shrinking its Surface Pro form factor into something more portable, but still incredibly usable and comfortable to type on. </p><p>Under the hood, Microsoft says Surface Go owners can expect about as much computing power as 2014's Surface Pro 3. This means it'll be more than good enough for browsing the web, watching Netflix, and putting together a PowerPoint presentation. Maybe don't expect to play "Fortnite" with the graphics settings cranked way up, though. </p><p>It runs an Intel Pentium processor. The base model has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of hard drive space, while a more expensive model, starting at $549, will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of hard drive space.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Microsoft</span></p><p class="caption">A closer look at the Microsoft Surface Go shows that it has a headphone jack, a Surface Connect charger port, and a single USB-C port.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Microsoft further claims that the Surface Go gets 9 hours of battery life, which comes with the caveat that this was tested by playing a video file that was stored on the device. It also includes facial login by way of Microsoft's Windows Hello system, similar to Apple's FaceID, as well as a MicroSD card slot to expand its storage.</p><p>In terms of ports, the Surface Go is more limited than its larger brethren. It includes Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port, which is mostly used for charging but can also be used to plug it in to a docking station. Otherwise, you get a single port for USB-C - a new universal standard that replaces the USB slot you might be familiar with.</p><p>The USB-C port can be used for plugging in monitors and other accessories, as well as for charging the Surface Go itself in a pinch. However, the vast majority of devices, including most smartphones, still rely on regular old USB to work, meaning that Surface Go owners might need to get in the habit of carrying around some adapters. It does have a headphone jack, though. </p><p>The Surface Go will ship with Windows 10's "S Mode" enabled, which means you can only install apps from the Microsoft Store - a tradeoff for better battery life and generally smoother performance. If you want, though, it's easy to disable "S Mode" and go back to regular old Windows, which is good if you want Google Chrome as your browser.</p><p>Finally, Microsoft says that a model with LTE cellular connectivity is in the works, but won't be ready until later this year. </p><h2>Go against Apple</h2><p>In the bigger picture, Microsoft is using the Surface Go and its price point to take aim at two Apple devices at once.</p><p>First, as a tablet, the Surface Go will square off against Apple's productivity-focused iPad Pro, which starts at $649 for a 10.5-inch model. And second, as a fully-functional Windows 10 laptop, The Surface Go will try to eke some share away from Apple's whole line of MacBook laptops, which starts at $999 for the cheapest MacBook Air.</p><p>In both cases, Microsoft is employing the same sales pitch as the rest of the Surface lineup.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Microsoft</span></p><p class="caption">The Microsoft Surface Go can be used as a lightweight tablet, too. That's especially clutch in both schools and corporations, both of which often rely on specialized software. And because the Surface Go is a tablet, it's both more portable than any Mac, plus it has a touchscreen. </p><p>Make no mistake, Microsoft's Surface business in total is still a fraction of Apple's enormous hardware revenues. And while the Surface has its diehard fans, myself included, it's still a relatively niche product for Windows power users.</p><p>Still, at $399, the Surface Go costs far less than the $699 starting price for the larger Surface Pro. That could open up some doors for Microsoft's hardware business, especially among budget-conscious consumers.</p><h2>History lesson</h2><p>On a final note, some Microsoft fans are sure to be disappointed by the reveal of the Surface Go. </p><p>It's been rumored for a long time now that Microsoft was working on a tinier Surface: Microsoft released the 10.8-inch Surface 3 back in 2015, but there hasn't been anything even sort of like it since. In that sense, the announcement of the slightly smaller Surface Go is just picking up where the Surface 3 left off.</p><p>However, in recent weeks, it's been rumored that Microsoft was closer than ever to revealing Andromeda, a brand-new pocketable Windows device with two screens. While ZDnet recently reported that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-device-with-folding-screens-wont-ship-2018-report-images-2018-7">Andromeda project was on thin ice and unlikely to ever come to market</a>, Microsoft enthusiasts were optimistic that it was close to debut. </p><p>Well, it's certainly possible that Andromeda is still in the works. <p>I've been wary of Nintendo's new game console, the Switch, for quite some time.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>On paper, there's a lot stacked against it:</p><ul><li>It's underpowered compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, both of which cost the same amount (or less, depending on the model).</li><li>It's got a paltry game library compared to the competition.</li><li>Due to its lack of horsepower, major games released on multiple platforms (think: "Assassin's Creed," "Call of Duty," "Grand Theft Auto," etc.) won't ever come to the Switch.</li></ul><p>Still...there's something kind of magical about actually <em>using</em> the Switch. </p><p>The gimmick of Nintendo's new console is simple: It's both a home console and portable device, with the same game experience at home on a TV or in your hand on-the-go. But that gimmick is transformative in practice. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Indulge me for a moment while I explain what this means in my daily life:</p><p>Last night (Sunday evening), I played a few hours of "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" before dinner. I used the Switch Pro controller to play the game from my couch on my TV. Around 7PM, I paused the game and put the console into "Sleep Mode" (the equivalent of closing a laptop or turning off a tablet screen - "off," but not really all the way off). I ate dinner with my wife while watching season two of "The Great British Baking Show," and fell asleep a few hours later.</p><p>This morning (Monday), I woke up and showered and got ready for work. When it was time to leave my apartment, I grabbed my MacBook and the Nintendo Switch and threw them in my bag. While waiting for the F train, I took the Switch out of my bag and did some in-game errands I wanted to take care of (got that sweet black dye job on my armor). The subway arrived, and I tapped the power button on the top of the Switch, putting it into sleep mode again as I found a seat on the subway car. The subway left the station, and I started playing "Breath of the Wild" once more. A few moblin fights and one shrine later, I was at the 14th Street stop on the F train and, thus, near Business Insider's main office in Manhattan's Flatiron district.</p><p>I put the Switch to sleep once more and put it back in my bag. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I detail this not to brag about my thrilling morning routine, but to depict how the Switch has quickly, easily fit into my life.</p><p>There are a few reasons for this:</p><ol><li>It's incredibly fast to turn the Switch on and off, which is tremendously meaningful in the living room <em>and</em> on-the-go. The faster I can get in and out of a game, the more likely I am to play it.</li><li>The gimmick of the Switch is legit. It really is as simple as sliding the console in and out of the dock (seen above). No caveats. It's genuinely impressive and seamless.</li><li>The biggest launch game on the Switch, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/legend-of-zelda-breath-of-the-wild-review-2017-3">an outrageously good game</a>. I'm thinking about playing it right now while writing this (seriously).</li></ol><p>There are problems with the Switch, no doubt. It's a far from perfect console, but its benefits far outweigh its problems. I wasn't expecting to like the Switch this much - I've outright stated that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/should-i-buy-nintendo-switch-2017-2">you should wait to buy it until later this year</a>, when there are more games and the system's online service lights up, and I stand by that - but here we are.</p><p>The Switch is far more delightful than I expected. I'm enjoying the Nintendo Switch much, much more than I expected - here's why

<p dir="ltr">It's a full PC when you need to get work done and a tablet when you want to do casual stuff like browse the web or play a game. Why buy a $1,000 laptop and a $500 tablet when one device can do it all for a little over $900? After all, over 90% of tablet owners still use a laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Plus it's lighter and thinner than the MacBook Air, all while boasting comparable or better specs. There's a brilliant 12-inch touchscreen. A silent fan. A pen for doodling and taking notes.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Doesn't that sound like something you'd want to buy?</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's the same story we've been hearing since Microsoft introduced the first Surface tablets nearly two years ago. Microsoft just did a better job at pitching this time. Unfortunately, that pitch is still an oversell. The Surface Pro 3 pushes us closer to that dreamy all-in-one device, but we're not quite there yet.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Surface Pro 3 is available for preorder now starting at $799, but you'll need to spend an extra $130 for the optional but essential keyboard cover. (More on that in a bit.) It ships in August.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What Is It?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">From a hardware perspective, the Surface Pro 3 is downright impressive. It's a marvel that Microsoft was able to squish all the guts of a full PC into something so thin, light, beautiful, and durable. The screen resolution pops. Slap on the keyboard cover, and you're ready to crank through Office documents and Outlook emails.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It's wrong to compare the Surface Pro 3 to other tablets, especially on price. This is a PC disguised as a tablet, not a tablet pretending to be a PC. And that's why the Surface costs significantly more than your typical tablet. Think of it as a MacBook Air competitor, not an iPad competitor.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At 9.1mm, the Surface Pro 3 is only a hair thicker than the iPhone 5S. Without the keyboard cover, it weighs 1.76 pounds, which is heavy by tablet standards but very impressive for a fully featured PC.</p>

<p dir="ltr">If you buy Microsoft's Surface docking station, you can hook the tablet up to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, making it a replacement for your desktop PC, too. It also comes with a special pen that you can use to convert handwriting to plain text and quickly copy and paste items. The pen connects to the Surface via Bluetooth, and a double-click of the button on the end wakes the tablet up and automatically launches OneNote, Microsoft's note-taking app.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The keyboard cover got some improvements, too. The touchpad is bigger and bit more responsive. There's a magnetic strip on the edge that connects to the bottom bezel of the screen, which props the keyboard to a more comfortable typing angle. (Previous versions of the Surface forced you to type flat on the table, which felt awkward.) Microsoft claims that new keyboard angle helps the Surface work better in your lap, too.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What's It Like?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The Surface Pro 3 is the best Windows 8 machine you can buy. But don't take that as a compliment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">When I was in the Boy Scouts in elementary school, I won first place in the "turtle race" at the Pinewood Derby. The slowest car. The best of the worst. I got a trophy and everything.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That's what it feels like calling the Surface Pro 3 the best Windows 8 machine. It's a sad award for being at the top of the lowest class. It's not the hardware that's the problem, but Windows 8. Despite Microsoft's improvements over the last year and a half, Windows 8 is still clunky and difficult to use. You're forced into two operating systems, one for touch and one for the desktop. That also means two web browsers. Two email programs. Two settings menus to slog through. Let a newbie try Windows 8 for 15 minutes and she'll be screaming for the simplicity of iOS.</p>

The Surface Pro 3 is a mediocre tablet and a mediocre laptop. Put those two together, and you have a pricey device that still isn't as ideal as using something more traditional.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That said, if you enjoy Windows 8, you're definitely going to like the Surface Pro 3. It's the first device you should consider buying if you want a Windows machine. I may not think it's the optimal operating system, but if you want a gadget that truly can do everything (although not perfectly), the Surface Pro 3 will work out nicely.</p>
<p dir="ltr">What really bakes my noodle is that Microsoft spent so long trying to persuade everyone that the Surface Pro 3 is a laptop replacement, but still charges you an extra $130 for the keyboard cover. If someone tried selling you a regular laptop without a keyboard, you'd laugh and go spend your money somewhere else. It's like selling a car without wheels.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And the keyboard isn't that great. The keys are plasticky and cheap-feeling. The touchpad is a disaster. Two-finger scrolling is a frustrating mess, and I often found myself randomly highlighting text on web pages when I didn't mean to. Plus, even though Microsoft promised the Surface Pro 3 will sit sturdily in your lap, the keyboard is still too flimsy and nowhere near as good as using a normal laptop.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Battery life was also disappointing. Microsoft claims you can get about 8 hours, but I was only able to get about 5. That's not great, considering laptops like the MacBook Air can get over 10 hours per charge.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The biggest improvement to the hardware is the kickstand. It's now fully adjustable, so you can prop the tablet to whatever angle is most comfortable for you. (The last Surface's kickstand only had two configurations.) It can lay almost flat now, which is probably nice for artists who want to sketch on the device with the pen accessory.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> In that respect, the Surface Pro 3 matches a regular laptop nicely.</span></p>

The Surface Pro 3 is almost a pound heavier than the iPad Air, and the larger 12-inch screen isn't very comfortable for kicking back on the couch or train so you can casually read an e-book or stream a Netflix movie. If you're looking for a tablet, an iPad, Kindle Fire, or Google Nexus 7 is much better. The Surface Pro 3 is just too big and the battery life is just too weak compared with the competition.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Conclusion</h2>
<p dir="ltr">If you like Windows 8 and use Office a lot, then the Surface Pro 3 is the perfect device for you. It's the ideal manifestation of what Microsoft believes Windows 8 should be, and you're going to love it if you buy into that vision.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But for everyone else, Microsoft hasn't fulfilled its promise of building a device that can do it all and do it all well.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That said, there's still hope. The Surface team proved the laptop isn't finished evolving. It showed us that we're inching closer to a world where yes, maybe we don't need to lug around two or more devices when one will suffice.</p>
