<ul class="summary-list"><li>Over the past century, tanks have become a dominating force on conventional battlefields.</li><li>Now, after decades of refinement, the US Army fields some of the most advanced main battle tanks in use. Here's how they evolved into their modern form.</li></ul>Of all the weapons used on the battlefield, few have captured attention quite like the tank.History has proved that good tanks can make the difference between winning and losing battles. The US Army has learned that and has given its armored force prime attention to ensure battlefield success.Today, US Army tanks are among the best in the world. That prestige is the result of a long evolution that took dozens of models and numerous hard-fought battles.<h2>The interim vehicles</h2><div type="image" title="Army light tank M3 Lee" height="1560" width="2081" msid="78001073" hostid="261"></div>US tank development had a humble beginning. Unable to produce its own tank before World War I, the US military's tank development was not seen as a priority, so American tank design more or less puttered along with few major models.That changed completely after the start of World War II. Britain, alone in Europe and short of almost all military hardware, was desperate for tanks, and the Roosevelt administration, pledging to become the "great arsenal of democracy," sent thousands though the Lend-Lease program.These were the <a href="https://www.nationalww2museum.org/visit/museum-campus/us-freedom-pavilion/vehicles-war/m3a1-stuart-tank" target="_top">M3 Stuart</a> and <a href="https://www.warhistoryonline.com/military-vehicle-news/tank-profile-m3-lee-grant-worthy-opponent-1942-dated-just-one-year-later.html" target="_top">M3 Lee</a>.The M3 Stuart was a light tank armed with a 37 mm gun and three .30-caliber Browning machine guns.<div type="image" title="US Army M5 Stuart light tank" height="1997" width="2500" msid="78001074" hostid="261"></div>On the whole, the tank performed poorly. Its armor was minimal and its gun was ineffective against armored targets. It found more success in the Pacific theater, where it operated well in jungles and held its own against inferior Japanese tanks.The M3 Lee medium tank was more successful. It was unique in that it had two main armaments: a 37 mm gun in a turret on the top and a 75 mm gun mounted in the hull. The 37 mm was intended for infantry support, while the 75 mm was meant for enemy tanks and hardened structures.It performed well, proving to be a capable adversary for almost all Italian tanks and even the German Panzer IV. The Lee performed even better in the Pacific, outclassing Japanese tanks.<h2>The backbone of World War II</h2><div type="image" title="M4 Sherman Tank during final trials at a firing range, somewhere in America, on July 20, 1942." height="2249" width="3000" msid="78001078" hostid="261"></div>But the Stuart and the Lee were only interim vehicles rushed out to fill a desperate need for armor to blunt German and Japanese offensives. By 1943, they were outdated.They were replaced by the M4 <keyword id="361959" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sherman">Sherman</keyword>. Based on the Lee and initially armed with a 75 mm gun, it had a crew of five and armor up to 3.6 inches thick.The Sherman first saw action in late 1942 at the Second Battle of El Alamein, outperforming its British-designed contemporaries and helping Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery stop German Gen. Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps in its tracks. It proved quite capable in the early years of the war and was held in high regard.But the Sherman was not superior to many of Germany's tanks and anti-tank weapons. It suffered high <a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Armored_Champion/QuvyCQAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=0pv=0" target="_top">losses</a> when the Allies entered Western Europe.<div type="image" title="iwo jima marines" height="2204" width="2785" msid="78001080" hostid="261"></div>The US Army lost over 4,000 Shermans alone and the UK about 2,000. The losses were so bad the tank earned a reputation as a "<a href="https://warisboring.com/the-m-4-sherman-tank-was-hell-on-wheels-and-a-death-trap/" target="_top">death trap</a>."But the Sherman's positives outweighed its negatives. It was extremely reliable and had a high crew-survivability rate. It was also eventually upgraded with a 76 mm gun that made it capable of fighting most German tanks.Moreover, almost 50,000 were built, meaning there was never a shortage.Shermans were used in every theater by every major Allied country. There were also many different variants, including ones with <a href="https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/US/sherman-crocodile/" target="_top">flamethrowe</a><a href="https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/US/sherman-crocodile/" target="_top">rs</a> and <a href="https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2-us-calliope/" target="_top">rocket launchers</a>.They were so reliable that US commanders decided to abandon the more powerful <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/world-war-ii-m26-pershing-2361329" target="_top">M26 Pershing</a> heavy tank in favor of the Sherman during the Korean War.<h2>The Patton family</h2><div type="image" title="Army M47 Patton tank Korean War" height="2244" width="2992" msid="78001084" hostid="261"></div>After WWII, tank design took a different turn. With the invention of the <a href="https://science.howstuffworks.com/centurion-main-battle-tank.htm" target="_top">Centurion</a> by the British, it became clear that the modern army would not be made up of different light, medium, and heavy tanks.Instead, the future lay in the main battle tank (MBT), which invested equally in armor, firepower, and mobility.The first use of American MBTs was in Korea. With the Pershing prone to mechanical failure and the Sherman becoming dated, the US turned to a new series of tanks that would form the backbone of its tank force for most of the Cold War: the Pattons<div type="image" title="Army M60 tank" height="1982" width="3000" msid="78001087" hostid="261"></div>The first Patton, the M46, saw service in the Korean War. It featured 90 mm gun and a crew of five. Its successor, the M47, did not see combat with the US Army but was exported to a number of NATO countries.The M48 was the workhorse of the US armored forces in the Vietnam War. It performed well in the infantry-support roll and even faced off against Soviet-designed PT-76 and T-55 tanks used by the North Vietnamese Army.The final member of the Patton family, the M60, featured composite armor and a 105 mm gun. A later version, the M60A2, was given a 152 mm gun with the ability to launch anti-tank missiles. Though it didn't serve with the US in Vietnam, it did see action in the invasion of Panama in 1983 and the first Gulf War in 1991.<h2>The <keyword id="3111291" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="abrams">Abrams</keyword> arrives</h2><div type="image" title="Army Abrams tanks Iraq Desert Storm" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78001090" hostid="261"></div>Army designers began developing a replacement for the M60 in the 1970s. By 1980, their creation, the M1 Abrams, was adopted for full service.The tank was revolutionary. It featured a whole new suite of electronics, including GPS navigation and an infrared camera. Its new Chobham armor is up to a foot thick in some places, and its 120 mm gun can fire multiple types of <a href="https://asc.army.mil/web/portfolio-item/tank-ammunition/" target="_top">specially designed rounds</a> to destroy anything in its sight.At the Battle of 73 Easting in February 1991, Abrams tanks <a href="https://www.stripes.com/news/middle-east/2nd-cavalry-regiment-remembers-battle-of-73-easting-1.398758" target="_top">destroyed</a> over 100 Iraqi tanks and armored personnel carriers in just 23 minutes with almost no casualties.<div type="image" title="Army Abrams tank" height="1667" width="2500" msid="78001094" hostid="261"></div>The Abrams also saw service in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20110530031550/http:/www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=61767" target="_top">small tour</a> in Afghanistan. It has been constantly upgraded, with its most recent <a href="https://www.army.mil/article/194952/army_rolls_out_latest_version_of_iconic_abrams_main_battle_tank" target="_top">version</a>, the M1A2 SEP V.3, entering service in 2017. An even newer version, the M1A3, is in development.While the Army is getting newer Abrams, the Marine Corps has <a href="https://www.hqmc.marines.mil/Portals/142/Docs/CMC38%20Force%20Design%202030%20Report%20Phase%20I%20and%20II.pdf?ver=2020-03-26-121328-460" target="_top">announced</a> plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-begins-to-get-rid-of-all-tank-battalions-2020-7" target="_top">disband</a> its entire tank force.The decision, part of the Corps' Force Design 2030, is intended to refine the force, ditching "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-force-redesign-means-taking-tanks-from-norway-caves-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">big heavy things</a>" to once again focus on naval and amphibious operations, largely in response to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-military-is-improving-but-us-has-more-combat-experience-2020-7" target="_top">rise of China</a>.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Israel has lost nearly two dozen tanks during fighting with Hamas since October 7.</li><li>Those losses have come despite the sophistication of Israeli tanks and Israel's experience using them.</li></ul>The recent images of an advanced Israeli Merkava tank blazing on the Gaza border evokes memories of another October war 50 years ago.During <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-war-hamas-gaza-tougher-fight-than-yom-kippur-war-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the 1973 Yom Kippur War</a>, the world was shocked by images of vaunted Israeli tanks burning in the Sinai desert, the victim of cheap <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anti-tank-missiles-armor-ukraine-tank-still-has-battlefield-role-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Soviet-made anti-tank rockets</a>. Some experts warned the tank would become obsolete.That prediction was premature. Tanks are still the backbone of many armies, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-war-puts-russian-made-armored-vehicle-flaws-on-display-2023-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">including those fighting in Ukraine</a>. Nonetheless, about 20 Israeli tanks have been knocked out over the past two months by Hamas, an irregular force that lacks advanced weaponry.<div type="image" title="Hamas video Israeli tank RPG anti-tank" height="1018" width="1696" msid="105766709" hostid="261" sizebytes="59622"></div>Footage of a small, bomb-equipped Hamas <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XILraSBqC8k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drone</a> setting a $4 million Merkava on fire in October has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of main battle tanks, just as those photos from the Sinai desert, or the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drones-in-armenia-azerbaijan-war-raises-doubt-about-tanks-future-2020-11">images of destroyed tanks</a> in more recent wars, have stoked renewed debate about the role of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-knows-abrams-tanks-arent-suited-for-russia-china-war-2023-11">tanks on a modern battlefield</a>.Are tanks as vulnerable as they were 50 years ago? Or did Israeli armor suffer because of tactical rather than technical errors?"Some tanks were not combat-ready because crews were in vacation," Israeli military historian and blogger <a href="https://oleggranovsky-livejournal-com.translate.goog/1181883.html?_x_tr_sl=ru&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-US&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oleg Granovsky</a> told Business Insider. "On some tanks, the machine guns were removed from the roof of the turret to prevent them being stolen."<h2>Tanks of 1973</h2><div type="image" title="Israel tank Golan Heights Yom Kippur War" height="1332" width="1776" msid="105766710" hostid="261" sizebytes="193896"></div>The tanks that Israel used in 1973 would not have been out of place in 1943. The British-made <a href="https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a43853816/centurion-tank-history/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centurion</a> was designed during World War II, while the US-made <a href="https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/us/m48_patton.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">M48 Patton</a> went into production in 1952. (The IDF even used modernized <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Sherman#/media/File:M50-Supersherman-latrun-1.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">M4 Sherman</a> tanks, which entered service in the early 1940s but performed credibly for the Israelis against newer Soviet armor.)Though upgraded with 105-mm guns similar to those on NATO tanks in the 1970s, these vehicles had 1950s-era steel armor and lacked vehicle defense systems. They were as vulnerable to small shaped-charge anti-tank weapons as their predecessors were to bazookas and Panzerfausts during World War II.However, the problem in 1973 wasn't Israel's tanks but its tactics. Cocky from their 1967 triumph, Israeli commanders initially sent their tanks on unsupported cavalry charges against Egyptian infantry who were heavily armed with Soviet-made AT-3 Sagger wire-guided anti-tank missiles and RPG-7 anti-tank rockets.<div type="image" title="Israeli Centurion tank 1973 Yom Kippur War" height="1166" width="1555" msid="105766711" hostid="261" sizebytes="169524"></div>The IDF had to relearn what British tanks discovered in 1942 against Rommel's 88-mm anti-tank guns: Don't make reckless charges with tanks. Other vulnerabilities also became apparent. Israel's old Western-made tanks still had shortcomings, despite their upgrades — for example, the M48's hydraulic fluid proved to be horribly flammable when the vehicle was hit.Once Israeli armor teamed up with infantry and artillery to conduct combined-arms operations, however, tanks again became the IDF's decisive instrument.Nonetheless, the Israeli Armored Corps was profoundly shaken by the Yom Kippur War. Of about 2,500 Israelis killed in that war, most were members of tank crews. Out of the IDF's force of less than 2,000 tanks, 400 were destroyed and another 600 damaged, mainly by anti-tank munitions.<h2>Enter the Merkava</h2><div type="image" title="Israeli Merkava tank in the Golan Heights" height="1076" width="1435" msid="105766712" hostid="261" sizebytes="115974"></div>Israel had begun to develop its own tank after Britain and France imposed an arms embargo on it following the 1967 war.In 1970, Israel embarked on a quest to build its own main battle tank under the leadership of Gen. Israel Tal, a legend in tank warfare. Foremost among Tal's goals was incorporating the IDF's emphasis on preserving its soldiers.Tal "was adamant that any Israeli design would have the crew's personal protection as a paramount objective; the vehicle would have to be capable of withstanding an enormous amount of punishment without endangering the crew's lives," Samuel Katz wrote in his <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=biauto-64369-20&amp;h=4109879886d96154da41ce7fa3db4eef7224b1700637d3fa2d17c498536e28ee&amp;postID=656f6ac34c878294df1a4e0a&amp;postSlug=israels-war-with-hamas-shows-why-tanks-are-not-invulnerable-2023-12&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FMerkava-Main-Battle-Tank-Vanguard%2Fdp%2F1855326434" target="_blank" rel="noopener">history</a> of the Merkava. "Since crew protection was the overriding concern, every aspect of the tank had to adapt to this demand; firepower would have to come second and mobility, third."The result was the <a href="https://tank-afv.com/coldwar/Israel/Merkava.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merkava</a> — Hebrew for "chariot" — a tank unlike any other. The engine is in the front, which adds a layer of protection to the part of the tank most likely to be hit. The rear has a ramp to an armored compartment that can be used to evacuate casualties and allows the tank to be resupplied with ammunition while in combat. It can even carry up to 10 (extremely cramped) infantry in the back.<div type="image" title="Israel Merkava tank Jenin West Bank" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105766713" hostid="261" sizebytes="485286"></div>The IDF again had problems with anti-tank missiles during the 2006 war in Lebanon, when Hezbollah employed Russian-made Kornets. Though about 50 Merkavas were damaged, only five were destroyed, according to the IDF, which also struggled with poorly maintained vehicles and ill-trained crews.The latest version in operation, the Merkava 4 — the <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/advanced-sensors-high-tech-helmet-israels-5th-generation-battle-tank-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merkava 5</a> was only unveiled in September — was deployed with the tank battalion stationed on the Gaza border on October 7, as well as with the units now fighting inside Gaza.The Merkava 4 is armed with a powerful 120-mm smoothbore gun and advanced fire-control sensors. It is also protected by layered composite armor, as well as modular armor kits shielding vital points.Not surprisingly after 1973, Israel has been a pioneer in tank defense. Its <a href="https://www.rafael.co.il/worlds/land/trophy-aps/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trophy</a> active-protection system — which has been adopted by the US and Britain — uses radar to detect incoming anti-tank munitions and fire pellets to destroy or deflect them.<h2>What happened in Gaza</h2><div type="image" title="Israeli tank Gaza" height="1500" width="2000" msid="105766714" hostid="261" sizebytes="370094"></div>Assessing the tank vs. anti-tank struggle in Gaza is difficult, as both sides are secretive and careful to release only information that benefits them. Hamas drones dive-bombing Israeli tanks is probably more of a rare occurrence than a decisive tactic — though the IDF has mounted steel cages on its tanks for protection.More important is Hamas's polyglot collection of Russian, Iranian, and North Korean portable anti-tank weapons, including Kornets, Sagger knockoffs, RPG-7s, and SPG-9 recoilless rifles. Hamas has also produced a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/10/15/hamas-distributed-a-handy-guide-to-destroying-israeli-tanks/?sh=bcdb75f34e1b" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guide to destroying tanks</a>, which suggests overwhelming the Trophy system by firing rockets at close range before the APS can react, among other tactics.The selective release of battlefield footage does little to clarify the balance between tanks and anti-tank weaponry. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=2ChupBvu4Rw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Israeli videos</a> appear to show the Trophy system successfully <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=2ChupBvu4Rw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intercepting</a> anti-tank missiles, while <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=kaG5I1IpNSE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hamas videos</a> show explosions on or around Israeli tanks, though it's unclear if those blasts are Trophy interceptions or the Israeli vehicles being destroyed.Ultimately, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anti-tank-missiles-armor-ukraine-tank-still-has-battlefield-role-2023-10">the utility of tanks in combat</a> depends on how they are used, how prepared their crews are to use them, and how capable their adversaries are to defend against them.<div type="image" title="Israeli tank Gaza City" height="1196" width="1795" msid="105766738" hostid="261" sizebytes="211714"></div>Many of Israel's armor losses in the current war happened during Hamas's devastating surprise attack on October 7, which caught the IDF napping over the Simchat Torah holiday. About 50 Israeli armored vehicles were captured, including 24 of the Namer, a troop-carrier version of the Merkava, according to the open-source intelligence website <a href="https://www.armadarotta.com/2023/10/israel-at-war-tracking-equipment-losses.html#more" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Armada Rotta</a>.Israel's tanks were also not adequately manned during the attack: One Merkava 4 went into action against the attackers on October 7 with just two crewmen instead of four. Granovsky, the historian, said some reserve armored units had maintenance issues caused by personnel shortages. It also seems likely that Trophy defenses were not activated when the surprise assault began.The crucial test will be how many tanks are destroyed or damaged during the fighting in Gaza. <a href="https://mwi.westpoint.edu/these-are-the-challenges-awaiting-israeli-ground-forces-in-gaza/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Urban battlefields</a>, with close confines that usually benefit defenders, are the deadliest for armor: In one incident on October 31, a Hamas anti-tank missile <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/idf-says-9-soldiers-killed-battling-hamas-deep-inside-gaza-as-military-toll-mounts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">destroyed</a> a Namer armored vehicle, killing 11 Israeli infantry and wounding four more.IDF armor will inevitably suffer losses in Gaza, but the Merkava will fare better than the Centurions and Pattons of 1973 would perform. Israel's war with Hamas shows why even 50 years of upgrades can't make tanks invulnerable

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US and Greek militaries have continued to strengthen their relationship.</li><li>At the end of 2021, the US transferred dozens of armored vehicles and specialized watercraft to <keyword id="6357856" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="greece" source="Orion">Greece</keyword>.</li></ul>The US continues to strengthen its military partnership with Greece <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-greece-expand-defense-cooperation-amid-tension-with-turkey-russia-2021-11">following the signing</a> of the Mutual Defense and Cooperation Agreement in October.The US is helping its Mediterranean ally now by transferring 1,200 surplus M1117 Guardian armored vehicles and four Mark V Special Operations Craft to the <keyword id="12890415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="greek-military" source="Orion">Greek military</keyword>.The combined value of the equipment is close to $1 billion, but it is being provided to Greece at a very significant discount under the US's Excess Defense Articles program.Congressional approval is required for a country to receive EDA equipment. Therefore, the transfers reflect a "commitment to continuing to build on the strength of a relationship that has reached a high point but is not yet at its summit," <a href="https://gr.usembassy.gov/ambassador-pyatts-remarks-at-the-opening-ceremony-for-arrival-of-m117-armored-security-vehicles/">according to US Ambassador to Greece</a> Geoffrey Pyatt.<h2>Hellenic Guardians</h2><div type="image" title="M1117 Guardian armored vehicles in Greece" height="828" width="1240" msid="88722466" hostid="261"></div>The Greek military will purchase the M117 Guardians <a href="https://greekcitytimes.com/2020/11/29/new-armored-vehicles-greek-army/">for about $80,000 apiece</a> — a discount of nearly 90% over their $800,000 production price.However, the Guardians will be provided without armament; the Greeks will have to procure and install machine guns and grenade launchers themselves.Forty-four vehicles have already been delivered to Greece. The remainder are to be delivered by April 2022. When she's not attending class, or studying for an exam, she's working on her TikTok page. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-app-online-website-video-sharing-2019-7">TikTok</a>, the wildly popular short-form video app, sat beside other giants, like YouTube and Instagram, on Apple's 2019 list of the <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2019/12/03/apple-best-apps-of-2019-iphone-ipad-mac/">top five free iPhone apps of the year</a>. The platform is owned by the Chinese internet company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/bytedance">ByteDance</a> and has become one of the hottest social platforms among <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/generation-z">Generation Z</a>.Rinab got her start on TikTok about one year ago. Now she has 1.6 million followers and treats her account like a part-time job. She's also a full-time student at the University of Southern California."I found that a lot of my friends who were in college and then got involved with social media just kind of took a leave of absence from school or just dropped out completely," she said. "It's not easy to balance both of them, but I think it definitely can be done." She told Business Insider that she's able to make it all work by dividing her week up into two parts. The first half of the week she attends classes. The second half she works on her social media, and as a freelance consultant where she helps companies learn how to use TikTok. Rinab shared the three main ways she earns money on TikTok as a creator, and broke down the average rate creators charge per sponsorship for Business Insider. <h2>1. Brand sponsorships</h2>Creators can land sponsorships through TikTok's monetization team (which reaches out to creators), through a brand or agency, or from a record label. For an official TikTok campaign, such as a "Hashtag Challenge," TikTok will provide the sponsorship to the creator directly.Rinab said she earns most of her revenue through sponsored posts on TikTok. She has a direct relationship with the company, and they will occasionally bring her sponsorships - and send her on all-expenses paid trips.In November, TikTok sent Rinab, along with other creators, to Paris to judge the Elite Model Competition, and teach a workshop on how to be a successful creator.Working with TikTok directly has helped Rinab expand her business and land sponsorships with brands like Bumble, Hollister, and Universal. There are also some management firms like Whalar Stars and Amp Studios that help creators land deals and opportunities, but Rinab said she currently manages her TikTok business on her own."I also like managing it myself and communicating with the brands directly," she said. "As much as I think it would be cool to put the weight of communicating with brands and negotiating on someone else, I think I would feel like I'm missing out, just because I enjoy doing that so much." When negotiating with a brand for a sponsorship on TikTok, Rinab said she will sometimes offer a package deal, which includes both a TikTok video and an in-feed post or Story on Instagram. In general, she said she'll charge "a couple thousand dollars" for a brand sponsorship, and according to other creators she's spoken to, the average rate for a sponsorship on TikTok is between $1,000 to $2,000 per 100,000 views. Several Instagram influencers interviewed by Business Insider said creators often <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/price-per-influencer-sponsorship-on-social-media-instagram-youtube-facebook-2019-11">charge brands about $100 per 10,000 followers for a sponsored post on that platform</a>, though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-to-test-hiding-likes-impact-on-influencer-business-2019-11">brands are increasingly paying attention to metrics other than follower count as well</a>.Deciding on a set rate for TikTok can be tricky, Rinab said, and it's hard to pin-point one amount because as she continues to grow in views and followers, her rates change. "Obviously the followers play a big part in it," she said. "I'm charging more at 1.5 million followers than I was at 800,000. But even so, I think the main thing that brands are looking for is the views." Rinab tracks her TikTok analytics like views and audience demographics, and at the end of a campaign, around 24 to 48 hours later, she will send that data over to a brand to show how it performed. "At the end of the day, they are paying for a commercial to be produced and posted on the page," she said. "It's really important to know the value in that and know what they are getting out of it, and how your time should be compensated." <h2>2. Song integrations</h2>Some record labels like Universal Music, Sony Music, or Warner Music will sponsor a TikTok creator when they are looking to increase the number of streams of a popular song or make a song popular again.Rinab said she works with companies like Flighthouse, a digital entertainment brand that connects creators with music artists and pays them to a create video with a specific song. "I'll charge a couple hundred dollars for a song, just because it's a lot easier for me to put the song in the background," she said. In comparison, Salina, a popular TikTok creator with 1 million followers, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-tiktok-stars-make-sponsorships-live-streaming-merchandise-2019-11">told Business Insider</a> that she charges around $200 for a song integration. David White, the head of influencer management at the digital-talent-management firm Whalar Stars, said the factors considered when pricing a TikTok campaign generally are the creator's audience size, commercial licensing, brand exclusivity, and campaign scope. He said an audio integration for a record label was priced significantly less than an official brand sponsorship.<h2>3. Livestreaming</h2>Engaging with her audience by posting frequently, and interacting with them through livestreams is one of the techniques that's helped Rinab grow her following online, she said.During a livestream, followers on TikTok can send a creator virtual "gifts" that they can purchase for various amounts of "coins" (coins can be bought by users in packs starting at 100 for $0.99).TikTok users use cash to buy "coins," which they can then use to purchase virtual "gifts." Once they give the "gifts" to the livestreamer, those "gifts" are then converted into "diamonds." Those "diamonds" are then converted into cash for the creator, and are deposited into the creator's PayPal account.The system for earning money through live streaming is intentionally opaque.
