Udhayanidhi Stalin sworn-in as minister in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Alleging a scam in the supply of free laptops to the students, DMK president <keyword id="853811" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="M-K-Stalin">M.K. Stalin</keyword> on Saturday appealed to the <keyword id="6359479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu-government">Tamil Nadu government</keyword> to blacklist the Chinese company and levy a heavy penalty on the supply of the inferior products. He also said the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword> should stop payment of the ₹456 crore balance to the Chinese company. According to Stalin, the Electronics Corporation of <keyword id="20154" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> Ltd (Elcot) had issued a tender for procurement of 15.66 lakh laptops for free supply to students at an outlay of ₹1,921 crore. Without naming the Chinese company, Stalin said the company had participated in the bid and submitted two models and test reports on their performance, while stating the price of the two models to be the same. Stalin said that as per the test reports, one laptop model has scored 465 marks and the other 265 marks, which means one of the models is inferior in performance. According to the DMK leader, the government opted to buy the lesser performing laptop model which in turn had enriched the Chinese company unduly to the tune of ₹469 crore. Not only that, one of the tender conditions was that the laptops should have the provision to increase its memory capacity from 4 GB to 8 GB, but the laptops supplied by the Chinese company did not have that facility. Stalin said the government had decided to give additional ₹392 crore for the cost of the new motherboard so that the laptops' memory capacity could be increased to 8 GB. The Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Stalin said the state government has already paid Rs 1,465 crore to the Chinese company and steps are being taken to pay the balance of Rs 456 crore before the electoral model code of conduct kicks in. The government also inked pact with Yield Engineering Systems, represented by Ramakanth Alapati and Prabhat Mishra, for a product development &amp; manufacturing facility for semiconductor equipment to be set up at Sulur, Coimbatore, at a cost of Rs 150 crore generating 300 jobs and with PayPal, represented by Srini Venkatesan and Zi-Yang David Fan, for an Advanced Development Centre focused on AI, to be set up at Chennai, generating 1,000 jobs, the Industries Minister said in a series of posts. The chief minister would address the Tamil community on August 31, and hold discussions with representatives from the US-based companies at Chicago on September 2, and urge them to invest in Tamil Nadu. During his trip, he would meet the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. He will return to Chennai on September 14.

Internet major Google will partner with <keyword id="19926050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foxconn" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Foxconn" meta.hostid="364" meta.entityid="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> to produce its ultra-premium Pixel smartphones for the first time in <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Thursday. According to sources, Google's partnership with Foxconn is in addition to its plan to make Pixel smartphones at <keyword id="21788190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dixon-facility" source="keywords">Dixon facility</keyword>. "As a result of the negotiations, Google will partner with Foxconn in Tamil Nadu to produce the Pixel cell phones and has offered to set up a factory," Stalin said in a statement. According to the sources, Google will also export smartphones from India. "Dixon will also make Pixel smartphones under an arrangement with Compal Electronics which makes Google's devices," a source said on condition of anonymity. The <keyword id="19963696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production" source="keywords">production</keyword> will start from September and the export will begin once the production stabilises, another source said. Emails seeking comments from Google and Foxconn in this regard did not elicit any immediate response. The company had announced plans to make Pixel smartphones in India in October. Counterpoint Research estimated Google Pixel's share in the Indian smartphone market at 0.04 per cent during the March 2024 quarter. "Google is estimated to register healthy growth of 30 per cent annually in 2024 owing to two reasons -- Google has started <keyword id="19914449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="keywords">manufacturing</keyword> it entire series domestically, which will help it save in import duties and sell cost effectively. "Secondly, the growing premiumization trend will work in favour of Google boosting growth for the only devices with flagship Android experiences in the market supported by strong ATL promotions," said Neil Shah, VP Research, Counterpoint Research. As per Cybermedia Research, Google Pixel has less than one per cent market share in India. "Google is finally waking up to India's attractive domestic market as well as its potential as a global export hub. The move to make Pixels in India comes at at time when a premiumization trend surging through the smartphone market. In addition to manufacturing, Google will need to address other parts of the puzzle, including marketing and post-sales support, including a strong service network. "With this, Google can potentially emulate the success of other smartphone giants in India," said Prabhu Ram, Head- Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CyberMedia Research. Google to make Pixel smartphones at Foxconn, Dixon facilities from September

Former Chief Minister of <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and AIADMK Coordinator O.Panneerselvam on Wednesday condemned the DMK government for deciding to close down kindergarten classes in the <keyword id="65626" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government-schools" source="Orion">government schools</keyword>. Panneerselvam said the AIADMK government in order to attract more children to the government schools had started lower and upper kindergarten classes. The poor people admitted their children to the government schools instead of private ones that charge high fees, he added. According to him, the DMK government is paving the way for the government school students to go to the private institutions and enable the latter to flourish. Such an action is against social justice and it seems the DMK is terming these as <keyword id="13233124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dravidian-Model" source="Orion">Dravidian Model</keyword>, the AIADMK leader added. The revamped ITIs will have modern infrastructure and training facilities to meet the industry 4.0 standards. Along with the technology transformation of the ITIs, Tata Technologies will also be providing industrial support for trainers' training and ensuring maintenance of the new set-up, the company said. Tata Technologies is collaborating with the Tamil Nadu government and 20 global industry partners to implement this project by upgrading the overall facilities of these 71 technology centres, developing an Industry 4.0 course curriculum, conducting training programs, and providing equipment and software support at the new centres. "The industrial sector has always taken the center-stage in the economic development of Tamil Nadu as we host manufacturing facilities of several global OEMs. The collaboration with Tata Technologies is an effort to bridge the gap between demand and supply of skilled workforce requirements of the manufacturing industry," Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said. "The industrial ecosystem and its requirements have changed significantly over the last few years with a digital-first approach.
