<ul><li><strong><keyword id="2573" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword>'s northern regional office has formed a committee to identify the "redundant" or "surplus" employees who would be asked to go on a compulsory leave without pay (LWP) for up to five years. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>Air India issued an internal order on July 14, asking its departmental heads and regional directors to identify the employees, based on various factors such as efficiency, health and redundancy, who will be sent on a compulsory LWP for up to five years. </strong></li><li><strong>Moreover, the national carrier had said the employees can voluntarily opt for the LWP scheme too. </strong><br /></li></ul>Air India's northern regional office has formed a committee to identify the "redundant" or "surplus" employees who would be asked to go on a compulsory leave without pay (LWP) for up to five years. <br /><br />An official order in this regard was issued on Tuesday. <br /><br />Air India issued an internal order on July 14, asking its departmental heads and regional directors to identify the employees, based on various factors such as efficiency, health and redundancy, who will be sent on a compulsory LWP for up to five years. <br /><br />Moreover, the national carrier had said the employees can voluntarily opt for the LWP scheme too. <br /><br />P S Negi, Regional Director (RD), Northern Region, Air India, issued an order on July 21, stating that following the July 14 order, an empowered committee is being constituted for the identification of "redundant/surplus manpower resources". <br /><br />Negi's order, which has been accessed by , said the general manager (personnel), general manager (finance) and departmental heads will be the members of the empowered committee. <br /><br />It also said a representative of the RD can be co-opted in the committee, if required, on the basis of "case merit". <br /><br />"GM (Personnel) will share the staff list with all departments and convene the discussions/deliberations, including the process of identification of surplus/redundant resources. The report is to be submitted to the RD office by 11th August, 2020, for a review and onward recommendation to the headquarters," the order said. <br /><br />The aviation sector has been significantly impacted due to the travel restrictions imposed in India and other countries in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. All airlines in the country have gone for cost-cutting measures such as pay cuts, LWP and firing of employees in order to conserve cash flow. <br /><br />Air India has four regional offices -- one each for the northern, western, eastern and southern regions. It is not clear if the other three offices, barring the one for the northern region, has formed such panels to identify redundant employees. <br /><br />In its July 14 order, Air India had asked its regional directors to constitute a committee each comprising the general manager (personnel), general manager (finance) and departmental heads concerned to "streamline the process of identification of redundant manpower, who would be told to proceed on compulsory LWP". <br /><br />The airline had said these panels would go through the records, based on factors such as suitability, efficiency, competence and health, and select the employees whose names will be forwarded, along with the RD's recommendations, to get the approval of the chairman and managing director for sending them on a compulsory LWP. <br /><br />Air India has a debt of around Rs 70,000 crore and the government had started the process to sell it to a private entity in January. The national carrier's net loss in 2018-19 was pegged at around Rs 8,500 crore. <br /><br />Equity infusion of Rs 500-600 crore every year is not sustainable and cost-cutting is necessary in Air India, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said on July 16, justifying the national carrier's decision to send certain employees on LWP for up to five years. <br /><br />On July 17, Air India had said its financial situation is very challenging due to the coronavirus pandemic and the LWP scheme for its employees is a "win-win" situation for them as well as the management. Air India regional office forms panel to identify employees who would go on leave without pay for upto five years

<keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword> announced a 20 per cent salary hike for pilots from October onwards.<br /><br />This follows last month's 6 per cent hike in salaries.<br /><br />Sources said that while the first tranche of Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) payment has been received by the airline, the second is expected shortly.<br /><br />Moreover, the company will be depositing <keyword id="17506" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tds" source="Orion">TDS</keyword> of all employees in the next two-three weeks. And, a significant portion of the PF will also be credited.<br /><br />According to an internal mail to all the pilots, senior VP, <keyword id="9138754" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gurcharan-arora" source="Orion">Gurcharan Arora</keyword> said that the Spicejet has received the approval for a loan under the government's ECLGS scheme. "The first tranche of the payment has already been received and the second trancher is expected very soon. Our management is working to raise an additional 200 million dollars."<br /><br />The mail also talked about resumption of normalcy in the aviation sector and said that the airline is flying towards growth and sustainability.<br /><br />On Tuesday, in a temporary measure to rationalise cost, SpiceJet decided to place some pilots on leave without pay for a period of three months. The airline said that it will be inducting <keyword id="26842" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="max" source="Orion">MAX</keyword> aircraft shortly and these pilots will be back in service as the induction begins. The company is also on the block for privatization.<br /><br />Air India has justified the cut in allowances of existing employees by citing the precarious financial position due to Covid 19.<br /><br />Air India said in a tweet: "There has been no reduction in the Basic pay, DA and HRA of any category of employees. The rationalization of allowances had to be implemented on account of the difficult financial condition of the airline that were exacerbated by COVID-19."<br /><br />The pilots have questioned this claim and said that this is a devious plan to ensure a minuscule pay cut for senior AI officials. Basic Pay, HRA and DA constitutes 80 per cent of Gross Pay for senior AI officials. <br /><br />"By 'rationalizing' the allowances only, pilots and cabin crew are hit worst as it forms 80 per cent of our gross pay. Doesn't the difficult financial condition of the airline warrant a contribution from the management too based on their actual cost to company or just flying crew alone?" the pilots said in the letter.<br /><br />Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) have accused Air India of spreading "deliberate misinformation on social media" and questioned the "duplicitous" tweets by Air India calling them "misleading".<br /><br />"Air India has recently posted some duplicitous tweets that are misleading the general public", the pilots associations said.<br /><br />"Recent decisions of Air India Board regarding rationalization of staff cost were reviewed in a meeting at @MoCA_goi this evening. The meeting reiterated that unlike other carriers which have laid off large number of their employees, no employee of Air India will be laid off," said the Air India tweet.<br /><br />To this the pilots responded in a letter to Aruna Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Air India, "A lay off means settlement of arrears, gratuity, PF and retrenchment compensation by law. It was designed to search the nearby region of our galaxy for Earth-sized planets orbiting in the habitable zone of stars similar to our sun. This zone is also called the "Goldilocks zone" because it is the range where pressure and temperature are "just right" for liquid water to exist on a planet's surface. </p><p>This year, the astronomers were excited by the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/what-to-know-about-proxima-b-2016-8" target="_blank">discovery of Proxima B</a>, which is an Earth-size planet orbiting in the star Proxima Centauri's habitable zone. It also lies just 4.2 light-years away from us, which in space terms is pretty close. Stephen Hawking: Humans only have about 1,000 years left

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Google has worked out a way to quash lying on the internet. <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22530102.600-google-wants-to-rank-websites-based-on-facts-not-links.html#.VPbYz7OsW6H">The New Scientist reports</a> that Google is interested in the idea of ranking websites based on facts, not merely the prevalence of incoming links.</p><p>Basically, researchers at the company believe they can clean up the internet and make veracity a rankable priority in search terms. After all, the web is full of falsehoods. <a href="http://list25.com/25-biggest-lies-told-on-the-internet/">Here is a list of some of them</a>.</p><p>And <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/tomphillips/nothing-is-real#.fbPDEqdwWg">BuzzFeed has a list of 35 "news" stories from 2014 that got serious clicks, but weren't true at all.</a> You'll no doubt remember a few of them.</p><p>Sometimes fake facts on the internet are harmless fun - entertainment that is liked and shared simply because it's entertaining. However, there are instances where websites climb the rankings that shouldn't. <a href="http://www.vaccination.co.uk/">This anti-vaccination website</a> is one of the top search results for "vaccination," for instance, even though it is full of information that is either wrong or harmful to children. (And the fact that Business Insider just linked to it has only compounded its superior ranking within Google's results.)</p><p><span>At its core, Google ranks web pages based on the number of incoming links they receive. The assumption is that the more links a page has, the more important it must be on the web. The algorithm has been adjusted and modified hundreds or thousands of times over the years, of course, but incoming links are still a huge part of what determines any site's ranking in a search. Google's engineers adjust the algorithm periodically in hopes of making sure it returns the highest <em>quality</em> searches, not simply the <em>most popular</em> sites.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">To weed out popular lies, Google has devised a method/model that measures the "truthfulness" of a web page instead of its online reach. A post on a blog might have a big reputation, but that doesn't always mean it's factual. </span><a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22530102.600-google-wants-to-rank-websites-based-on-facts-not-links.html#.VPbYz7OsW6H">As NS explains</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, instead of counting incoming links (a measure of its reach) Google's new system could count the number of "facts" in the page. Each source is then analysed for how many lies it has and scored on that using something called a "Knowledge-Based Trust" score. </span></p><p><a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22329832.700-googles-factchecking-bots-build-vast-knowledge-bank.html">Google used its "Knowledge Vault" </a>to qualify the information. In some emerging markets, concerns regarding safety are&#xa0;additionally helping drive at-home drinking culture. &#xa0;</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For Pernod Ricard, the challenge goes beyond providing the correct beverages for the opportunity. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Succeeding in "home-tainment" means "not only bringing our bottles there," says Bogaert. The company is looking into&#xa0;helping&#xa0;organize parties and using social media as a medium to share photos from&#xa0;moments spent entertaining&#xa0;at home.&#xa0;</span></p><h3><strong>2. Consumers are getting more savvy. </strong></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In recent years, sales of Pernod Ricard's Absolut Vodka has dropped&#xa0;in the US, while Jameson Irish Whiskey has thrived. The reason for one brand's slump and the others' success is, according to Bogaert, how customers interpret the authenticity of the two brands.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While Jameson's Irish heritage has been front-and-center, Bogaert acknowledges that Absolut's marketing in the US got "maybe too emotional," losing its focus on the actual quality of the product. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, the company is refusing to make the same mistake again.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, instead of releasing new, out-there flavored vodkas and whiskeys, the company is promoting authenticity and quality. Absolut recently release 'Oak by Absolut,' vodka made in oak barrels, as well as Absolut Elyx, a "handcrafted luxury" vodka. In October, the vodka brand revamped its bottle branding for the first time it debuted in 1979 </span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-27/peak-vodka-absolut-smirnoff-fight-18-billion-u-s-market-lull"><span style="font-weight: 400;">to emphasize its authenticity, heritage, and quality</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The quest for authenticity also shaping acquisitions. In late January, Pernod Ricard acquired a majority stake in "</span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-29/pernod-ricard-said-to-be-in-discussions-to-acquire-monkey-47-gin"><span style="font-weight: 400;">hipster-favorite</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">" Monkey 47 gin, despite already owning mainstream gin brands Beefeater and Seagram's.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">"If we want to recruit the new consumers, millennials, we need to adjust a few things in our ways of working," says Bogaert. "We have a fantastic starting point… all of our brands have a strong heritage and history. Absolut is coming from Sweden - it isn't coming from just anywhere."</span></p><h3><strong>3. E-commerce is essential. </strong></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When asked what he thinks is the top&#xa0;change shaping the liquor industry today, Bogaert had a surprising answer.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The digital revolution," he says. "It fundamentally changes the way we interact with the consumer, it changes the way marketing is done, and it can bring us a competitive advantage if we move ahead of the others"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the next seven to eight years, Bogaert says that Pernod Ricard hopes that 5% of all sales will be through digital channels. The company already has its own digital platforms selling brands in countries including the UK and France, and is utilizing relationships with ecommerce giants like Amazon to further grow sales. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">More immediately, social media and online marketing give the company a direct line to customers. Pernod Ricard can&#xa0;quickly&#xa0;respond to consumer habits and concerns, as well as meeting consumers where they already are. I stand here leader of my country, flawed and human, but judged by my political actions and not my sexual orientation, my skin tone, gender, or religious beliefs," he said.</p><p>Varadkar said Ireland isn't the only place where this is possible, but "every country where freedom and liberty are cherished."</p><p>"We are, after all, all God's children," he said.</p><p>Pence avoided mentioning gay rights in his speech, instead focusing on his family's ties to Ireland. He said he is currently planning a trip to Ireland, with his Irish-born mother.</p><p>"People often ask me what I felt on Inauguration Day when I raised my right hand," Pence said. "As I looked out at that vast throng of Americans and took that oath, I thought about my grandpa ... He was proud to be an American, but I can still hear that Irish brogue in my heart when my grandfather used to talk about the old country and his home across the pond.
