Best cushion covers for home in India

<ul><li>Shah Rukh Khan topped the report in 2019 and <keyword id="6354832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ms-dhoni">MS Dhoni</keyword> was at No. 1 in 2020.</li><li>As per IIHB’s report, Dream11 was the most spontaneously recalled brand in this year’s survey.</li></ul>Versatile actor <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword> versus Captain Cool MS Dhoni? Well, both seem to have done equally well in the annual IPL ad recall research of the Indian Institute of Human Brands (IIHB) conducted ten days after the start of the League this year. The research polled 879 respondents in the age-group of 18-35 years (M=481, F=398) across India. The interviews were conducted telephonically. <br /><br />Dream11 was the most spontaneously recalled brand in this year’s survey, which possibly also helped enhance both the brand equity and recall of MS Dhoni who anchored the 12-ad series for the brand as its ambassador and protagonist. Jio Fiber, with multiple IPL teams featured with an effervescent Ranveer Singh gyrating with a sing-song brand message, came in second on recall in the research, also helping the celebrity endorser to considerably strengthen his personal recall. Byju’s was the most spontaneously recalled brand on the IPL last year; though its celebrity endorser Shah Rukh Khan trailed behind other celebrities. <br /><br />Virat Kohli, as expected, did well on recall too, and came third in the recall rankings. Salman Khan did surprisingly well in this year’s survey and came in at No. 4, ahead of Rishabh Pant, Rahul Dravid, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Saurav Ganguly who followed in that sequence. Ajay Devgn, Sachin Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Ayushmann Khurrana and Akshay Kumar, on the other hand, had very few mentions and scored very poorly on respondent recall. There were sporadic mentions of Virender Sehwag and Priyanka Chopra too. In the last survey conducted in October 2020, MS Dhoni had the highest spontaneous recall as a celebrity endorser. Virat Kohli was a not-so-close second. Akshay Kumar was at rank 3; Ayushmann Khurrana at rank 4.<br /><br />“MS Dhoni and Ranveer Singh had a disproportionate share of visibility and recall in the IPL research we just conducted. This was in sync with the ultra-high recall of the brands they respectively endorse”, said Dr. Sandeep Goyal, Chief Mentor of IIHB. “It is interesting nevertheless to note that brands without celebrities like Phone Pe, Byju’s and others too have done well wherever media investments are heavy”. <br /><br />IIHB team used its proprietorial CELEBAR tool based on Celebrity Brand Association &amp; Recognition to assign a metric score to each celebrity and associated brand. The tool takes into account:<br /><br /><ul><li>Spontaneous recall of the brand</li><li>Spontaneous recall of the celebrity</li><li>Association between brand &amp; celebrity together </li><li>Recency of communication </li><li>Media weight behind campaign</li><li>Solus versus multiple brands using the celebrity</li></ul>MS Dhoni had a CELEBAR score of 87, up from 82 at the last IPL. His spontaneous recall was an unusually high 82%. His association with Dream 11 was also very constant at 79% from the last edition. He got 9% association with IPL/Star TV, 8% brand association with Indigo Paints, 6% with Orient Fans for Orient Fans and Livfast Solar. 2% recall came from SunFeast Yippee. So, most of Dhoni’s brand goodness got hijacked by Dream 11, much like last year. If Dhoni had only been endorsing Dream 11, his CELEBAR score would have been near 100, given his strong association with that one brand, to almost the relative exclusion of the other brands he endorses.<br /><br />Ranveer achieved a CELEBAR score of 86, empirically almost equal to that of MS Dhoni. But his association was more democratically spread with Jio Fiber at 56%, JD mart at 48%, My11 Circle at 22% and Bingo at 18%. Names of some other brands were mentioned by respondents but these were filtered out as they were not part of the IPL broadcast. <br /><br />Both MS Dhoni and Ranveer gained massively also on account of their main brands spending disproportionately large amounts of media monies which made them exponentially more visible than other competing celebrities. <br /><br />Virat Kohli trailed far behind the Top 2. His score of 45 on CELEBAR is mostly derived by his 94% association with MRF tyres. Bluestar is in low single digits on association. <br /><br />Salman Khan at a CELEBAR of 38, owes 82% recall to Rajshree elaichi and the balance to Pepsi. Rishabh Pant climbed up interestingly to No. 5 on the strength of his JSW appearances. Varun Dhawan had 76% of his recall from Lux Cozi and much lower from Frooti. Alia owed most of her recall also to Frooti with scattered mentions of Dark Fantasy. <br /><br />Interestingly, the IPL seems to be running no/few ads with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, and even with cricketers Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul or Hardik Pandya, or the media weightages behind those ads were too insignificant to be noticed by viewers.<br /><br />The Cred ad for Rahul Dravid was spontaneously recalled by 17% respondents but only 2% remembered Jackie Shroff and only 1% mentioned Kumar Sanu for the same brand. <br /><br />Mutual Funds (AMFI) ads had 22% recall but most respondents got the protagonists mixed up, with the most attributing the messaging to Dhoni and Kohli. <br /><br />Dream 11’s association with multiple cricketers was mentioned by many respondents but most were not sure if they remembered current creatives. Only the connect with MS Dhoni was unambiguous. <br /><br />Despite heavy media weights, Vimal elaichi ad featuring Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan had only an 8% recall. Netmeds with Kareena Kapoor and Renuka Shahane had a good 9% recall. Priyanka Chopra’s Appy Fizz and Katrina’s Slice were almost not recalled. Hema Malini managed 3% recall on Kent RO. Randhir Kapoor’s Asian Paints managed 4% while Kareena Kapoor’s and Pankaj Tripathi’s Berger creatives both got below 1%. Ayushmann was remembered by less than 1% in Urban Company. Gajaraj Rao was mentioned in less than 1% for Voltas. Unacademy featuring Sunil Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle too scored poorly at 2%. Gamezy featuring KL Rahul got less than 1% recall. <br /><br />On the ads without celebrities, the most remembered were Phone Pe (32%), Byju’s (31%), Vivo (22%), One Plus (21%), Groww (20%), Upstox (20%), Kia (19%), MPL (18%), Bisleri (11%), PharmEasy (11%), Thums Up(9%), Coca Cola (6%), Renault Kiger (6%), Tata Safari (6%), Skoda (3%), Ajio (3%), Dark Fantasy (2%), LikedIn (2%), Raymond (2%) and Tuborg (1%).<br /><br />As more gets added to the broadcast as the IPL progresses, both standings of celebrities and recall of brands may change.<br /><br /><br />

Many babies sleep better when they can snuggle up next to their mom, and Ellie was no exception. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Like many moms, my labor and delivery didn't go as planned, and I ended up with an unplanned C-section and lots of complications. With just a mesh wall between us and Ellie, my husband and I got the benefits of co-sleeping without the risks. Even before she could roll, Ellie would often scoot her way to the side to get as close to me as possible.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another thing I loved was that we didn't have to bend all the way down to set her in the bassinet - and if you've ever transferred a sleeping baby from your arms to their bed, you'll know that one wrong move can blow the whole operation. We actually didn't have these features on our Essentia model, but they would have given me even more peace of mind in those early weeks with Ellie.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you're not sleeping well and (in my case) also recovering from surgery, your mind just isn't clear. We have a 90-pound German Shepherd and he never even came close to knocking it over. </span></p><p>The process to set up the bassinet was pretty straightforward as the instructions are clear and the pieces of the bassinet are clearly labeled or just quite easy to see where they'd go visually. The only items not provided are the Phillips screwdriver to secure the legs and batteries if you get one of the upgraded models. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whether you're pregnant or recovering from childbirth when you set it up, you'll likely need some help because of the weight and unless you're setting this up on a large table, you might also need to bend over to secure the bassinet to the base.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Note that the base needs a minimum of 45 inches between the bed and the wall, which makes this bassinet a good option for small rooms. I didn't find the bassinet to be bulky at all; some others on the market take up much more space. </span></p><h2><strong>What sets the HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper apart</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For me, the absolute standout feature of this bassinet is the swivel function as t</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">rue </span><a href="https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/sleep/Pages/A-Parents-Guide-to-Safe-Sleep.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">co-sleeper bassinets have not been proven to be safe</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by the AAP. There are some concerns that babies can get stuck between the bassinet and the bed as well as making their way completely into the bed itself. Completely separate bassinets are safer, but I don't think that they're as convenient for parents and don't provide the same feeling of warmth and closeness that babies can get with the HALO Swivel Sleeper. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And speaking of closeness, I also loved that the bassinet had mesh siding. Ellie </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">really loved to press her head and face against the side of the bassinet, and with the breathable mesh siding, I never worried that she would suffocate. After you've been cramped up in the womb for nine months, it must feel so strange and scary to suddenly sleep all by yourself in an open space. Pushing her head against the side was familiar and comforting to her. </span></p><h2><strong>Cons to consider</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Honestly, the biggest downside is that Ellie eventually grew out of t<span style="color: #000000;">he bassinet. </span></span></p><p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The weight limit is 20 pounds, which could easily accommodate a baby until they're able to start pulling up onto the sides which, if you'll remember, lower and rise whenever there's weight on it. But</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> we had to transition Ellie out of the bassinet because she was getting too long when she was around two- or three-months-old. </span></span></p><p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">As much as I stressed about always maintaining a safe sleep environment, I definitely pushed the limits of using the HALO for as long as possible. If it were up to me, I would have kept using it long beyond the manufacturer's recommendation, but my husband put his foot down when it became clear that Ellie was just too big; it really isn't a safe or wise thing to do as a parent. My husband and I loved using this $210 bassinet for our newborn - I was genuinely sad when she outgrew it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Rapid, on-site <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> testing is generally less accurate than tests which are sent back to labs for analysis.</li><li>But rapid <keyword id="8913051" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Covid-19-testing">COVID-19 testing</keyword> is still a useful screening tool, especially if it's conducted frequently. It can be cheap, and it's fast.</li><li>A negative rapid test result may still need to be confirmed with a lab test before a person can assume they're virus-free.</li><li>A rapid test can't be used as a hall pass to get close to other people, or as reassurance that you're doing a good job preventing yourself from getting sick. The virus is still here.</li></ul><p>Every day, people around the world are becoming makeshift coronavirus detectives, putting long swabs into their mouths and noses, and spitting into straws.</p><p>They're scouring for any rapid in-throat or in-nostril evidence that the novel coronavirus may be at hand — hunting for clear signs that they might have an infection of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. </p><p>When test results from these swabs and tubes come back negative, minutes later, some go off to play club <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=67&amp;v=R4EohtIn2BQ&amp;feature=emb_titlemb_title">soccer,</a> or <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2020/07/12/coronavirus-sports-leagues-burdening-covid-19-testing-resources/5404426002/">major</a> league <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/is-it-a-problem-that-sports-gets-fast-test-results-and-you-dont-11594897200">sports</a>. Others emerge from the comfort of their cars to attend <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/16/style/does-rapid-covid-testing-work-weddings-parties.html">chic parties in the Hamptons</a>, or venture to<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=47&amp;v=DCRK7frO-qo&amp;feature=emb_titlemb_title"> summer retreats</a>. The <a href="https://sleeplessthemusical.com/">cast and crew of the musical</a> "Sleepless" in the UK now <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-53995747">takes coronavirus nose swab tests each morning,</a> before performing their socially-distanced shows.</p><p>But <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/140161/download">rapid diagnostic tests for COVID-19</a>, which range in cost from a <a href="https://covidtrackerct.com/about-salivadirect/">couple dollars</a> to several hundred and take as little as 15 minutes to yield results, are not fail-safe, nor are they a free pass to live as if the virus does not exist.</p><p><keyword id="6364896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="public-health">Public health</keyword> experts caution that rapid COVID-19 tests may only pick up about 70 to 80% of all infected people they test.</p><p>"I would still say that distancing and outdoor air are your best friends," Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told Insider. "To me, that would provide me much more assurance that I was not going to either get infected, or infect others, than would a rapid-detection test." </p><p>Yet from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/16/style/does-rapid-covid-testing-work-weddings-parties.html">luxe party</a> entrances to <a href="https://news.yale.edu/2020/08/15/yales-rapid-covid-19-saliva-test-receives-fda-emergency-use-authorization">pro sports locker rooms</a> and <a href="https://www.thejakartapost.com/travel/2020/08/13/indonesian-travelers-enjoy-convenience-of-covid-19-testing-at-airports.html">vacation hotspots</a>, gatekeepers are using these tests as a ticket to entry, briefly pausing to register a negative result before letting people go on their way.</p><div type="image" title="rapid coronavirus testing line ny" height="1582" width="2100" msid="78245698" hostid="261"></div><p>These tests would be better dispatched as crude monitoring and surveillance systems, aimed not at catching every single case of the virus and declaring people safe to party, but instead dealing with the virus's still-rampant spread across countries around the globe.  </p><p>"Point of care tests are extremely useful if you have symptomatic people, or if you're contact tracing, or if you're in a place like a nursing home where we're going to be testing repeatedly," US coronavirus testing czar Admiral <keyword id="9562854" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="brett-giroir">Brett Giroir</keyword> told Insider during a press call on August 19.</p><p>"You can lose a little sensitivity, which generally these tests do, because you're going to have repeat testing."</p><p>Rapid tests tend to be less accurate than PCR diagnostic tests, which have taken days and (sometimes) weeks to get back from labs. Most of these <a href="https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-emergency-use-authorizations-medical-devices/vitro-diagnostics-euas#individual-antigen">newer, faster turnaround tests</a> are hunting for the presence of antigens, bits of protein that sit on or in the virus, instead of doing a more in-depth scouring for the virus's genetic code, as the more accurate molecular tests do.</p><p>The US Food and Drug Administration <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/140161/download">cautions</a> that negative rapid test results may need to be confirmed with a more accurate lab test, and the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/lab/resources/antigen-tests-guidelines.html#table1">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says</a> the tests are "generally less sensitive than viral tests." So far, only <a href="https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-emergency-use-authorizations-medical-devices/vitro-diagnostics-euas#individual-antigen">four rapid antigen tests</a> have received emergency use authorization from the FDA. </p><h2>Negative test results can encourage risky behavior</h2><div type="image" title="covid abbott rapid test swab" height="1236" width="1648" msid="78245701" hostid="261"></div><p>Even if rapid test results are correct, when negative, they often lead people into drawing false conclusions that they're safe to take lots of risks without consequence.</p><p>"It does send a message basically that if you're negative at this point, you must be doing something right," Osterholm said. "When I would say [if] you're negative at this point, you might just be lucky, and your luck's going to run out."</p><p>Giroir stressed that the incubation period for the virus can often stretch to seven days before people get sick.</p><p>"If you're closely exposed to a [sick] person, if you get a test on day three, it's negative, it doesn't mean you're going to be negative on day four, day five, or day seven, or day 10, or day 12," he said. "So it still does not obviate your strict adherence to physical distancing, wearing a mask, avoiding crowded places. Do not risk the vulnerable." </p><h2>Rapid tests are still helpful screening tools</h2><h2><div type="image" title="free rapid covid test india" height="1467" width="2200" msid="77679034" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Giroir expects several more rapid tests to be green-lit for emergency use by the FDA soon — enough to have 40 million point of care tests (the kind that don't need to be rushed off to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-throat-tests-work-rt-pcr-method-explained-2020-4">lab's PCR machine</a>) available by the end of September. </p><p>"Random testing of healthy people, just all over the country, is not what we're advocating for," he said. "All tests need to be used for the right person, at the right time, in the right situation."</p><p>In addition to the rapid <keyword id="177408" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Antigen">antigen</keyword> tests, teams of <a href="https://news.yale.edu/2020/08/15/yales-rapid-covid-19-saliva-test-receives-fda-emergency-use-authorization">scientists at Yale</a> and at the <a href="https://news.uillinois.edu/view/7815/1904934500">University of Illinois</a> have also been developing simple <a href="https://news.illinois.edu/view/6367/1795135071">spit test protocols that</a> don't require people to succumb to intrusive, almost brain-scratching nose and throat swabs. Instead, test-takers expel their saliva into vials, and then that material is tested for the virus in a lab — a process that can take anywhere from several hours to more than a day. </p><p>The tests, which <a href="https://covidtrackerct.com/about-salivadirect/">should cost about $10</a> for labs to process, aren't meant to be precise. </p><p>"We're using the increase for frequent testing of different populations so that we can get a handle on this virus," Anne Wyllie, one of the researchers behind Yale's new SalivaDirect test protocol, said.</p><p>"This is definitely more for screening," she said of the protocol, which could "remove infectious people from the chain of transmission."</p><p>The SalivaDirect method (which is a procedure other labs can copy and use, and not a testing kit) got FDA emergency use approval in August. It could be most useful for "frequent testing" Wyllie said, like at schools, workplaces, and on sports teams.</p><p>Saliva, Wyllie said "can be tricky to work with," but the process she's developed skips some of the usual steps of other lab testing for the coronavirus, and she's hopeful that the ease of collecting spit will help speed diagnoses up, especially in the critical early days of an infection.</p><p>"Imagine if they had overnight labs running, and you deposited your saliva sample before you went to bed at night," she said. "Then your results were out by the morning."</p><p>Even if these kinds of screening measures pick up just seven in every 10 coronavirus cases they test, that's far better than picking up none.</p><p>But it's still not an indication that it's safe to get cozy again with whoever you want. </p><p><em>This story was originally published on August 21, 2020. The fit is loose but not sloppy, and since that's by design, its collar sits high as it would on a regular T-shirt, not low and stretched out like an oversized sleep shirt. The best way to describe them is that they feel like a Saturday morning with nothing to do. The French Terry is super soft and surprisingly thick, and the elastic drawcord makes them customizable, and they're perfect combination of slouchy vs. fitted. The back pocket is a cute touch, and while I'm not sold on the bottle-nosed shaped hem on the shorts, it doesn't particularly bother me here - partly because it's executed well, and partly because they're too cozy to care if it wasn't. It's made from a super-soft blend of cotton and modal and it fits perfectly. After wearing it at home for a few days, I washed it and wore it to work and was comfortable all day long. Even at $28, the shirt is worth every penny. Although you could stock up on a bunch of $6 shirts, those are almost disposable. My old college sweatpants used to do the trick, but the Brooklinen Bergen Joggers have been a real game changer. Just like the T-shirt, they're super soft and comfortable. I like that they're lightweight, non-restrictive, and have decent-sized pockets for either putting my hands in or carrying stuff around. Brooklinen, best known for its ultra-comfortable sheets, is now in the loungewear game - here's how they stack up

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Peter Wollinga/Shutterstock</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Seasonal Affective Disorder is a serious depression that affects a small minority of the population.</strong></li><li><strong>But changing seasons and darker days affect most people's behavior, including our cell phone activity.</strong></li><li><strong>Psychologists say there are a few simple ways to help maintain mental health in the winter.</strong></li></ul><p><br />The idea that our mood might darken in the dark winter days has been around for millennia. </p><p>The coldest months of the year were a terrible time for the Greek Gods: Persephone was banished to the underworld every winter, while Boreas ushered in the cool winter winds and his nasty temper. Later, Shakespeare wrote, "a sad tale's best for winter."</p><p>Well, bring on the sad tales, because we're barreling towards the darkest day of the year. On December 21, people in New York will get just over 9 hours 15 minutes of sun, while in Anchorage, Alaska there'll be fewer than 5 and a half hours.</p><h2>A correlation between lower latitudes and less seasonal sadness</h2><p>The idea that darker days could make a portion of the population susceptible to depression wasn't picked up by modern clinicians until the 1980s, when South African psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal moved to the US and noticed a change in his mood during the New York winters.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/tjensen00/12645787634">Ted Jensen/Flickr</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>He wondered whether he felt more glum and low-energy because the days were darker than in his home city of Johannesburg.<br /><br />Rosenthal put the question to the masses in the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1981/06/12/healthtalk-seasons-of-the-psyche/f744a361-b849-4c1f-925d-c32845a11897/?utm_term=.c5b059d7dfaa%20">Washington Post</a> in 1981, saying he wanted to hear from anyone who felt sad in the wintertime and had "gone through enough cycles to know that this is going to happen again." </p><p>The results of his subsequent telephone surveys were conclusive - he found a clear correlation between lower latitudes and sunnier dispositions. Only about 1% of people living in Florida reported experiencing sadness, Rosenthal found, while nearly 10% of those in dark corners of the country like Alaska and New Hampshire said they were feeling down.</p><p>Rosenthal also found that <a href="https://www.normanrosenthal.com/seasonal-affective-disorder/">women between the ages of 20 and 40</a> were twice as likely to have SAD compared to men, and suggested the hormones estrogen and progesterone may have an impact.</p><p>His new term for this seasonally-linked depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), was first included in the 'DSM' - the go-to-guide for psychologists and mental health experts - in 1987.</p><p>According to the DSM, people who have SAD are excessively fatigued, lose interest in their hobbies, tend to crave more starches and sweets, may gain seasonal weight, and have difficulty concentrating during darker months.</p><p>If you suspect you have this type of depression, it's best to see a professional - don't try to diagnose it on your own.</p><h2>But is SAD a real thing?</h2><p>Recently there's been some debate about whether 'SAD' deserves its place among other disorders. Psychologist Steven LoBello <a href="http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2167702615615867">published a study</a> of nearly 35,000 Americans in 2016 that found no variation in their depression that could be explained by latitudes or seasonal changes.</p><p>"The belief that winter is a cause of depression, sadness, 'the blues' is very widespread in western culture," LoBello told Business Insider. But just because we believe we have SAD, he said, doesn't mean we really do.</p><p>LoBello's study, however, didn't rule out the possibility that major depression with seasonal variation exists for a very small portion of the population.</p><p>That's an assessment other clinicians largely agree with. Kelly Rohan, who studies adult mood disorders and SAD therapies at the University of Vermont, said estimates that up to 10% of people in places like Alaska have SAD are likely due to overstated self-reports. The real number of people with SAD is probably between 1-2%, she said.</p><p>"It's going to be a pretty pervasive mood state that is going to affect the person for four to five months of the year," Rohan told Business Insider. "It's not going to wax and wane depending on what's going on at work."</p><h2>What you can do about SAD</h2><p>There are at least three ways that people who've been diagnosed with SAD can combat the problem. </p><p><strong>Light therapy boxes</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Artifically adding some bright light to the dark days via a light therapy box (some people call these 'happy lamps' or phototherapy boxes) can help - when used regularly and as prescribed. The boxes are meant to mimic natural, outdoor light, and researchers believe they can cause some chemical shifts in a depressed brain. Most emit more than 10,000 lux (for comparison, a typical house lamp emits around 50-80 lux, and office lights about 500 lux.)</p><p>Good light therapy boxes are designed to filter out damaging UV light, however, these are not FDA-regulated so it can be tricky to find a reliable one.  </p><p>The bulbs, which are usually white florescent and may carry the full spectrum of light, can come with side effects like mild sunburns, eye strain, and migraines. On the more serious side, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9378689">some research has suggested</a> the lights can increase thoughts of suicide, or trigger mania. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/seasonal-affective-disorder/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20364722">Mayo Clinic</a> says they should be used in the morning, and patients should spend around a half hour of time in front of their lights after waking up. But again, it's not a device that should be self-prescribed.  </p><p>"Just because you can walk into Costco and buy one doesn't mean that you should," Rohan said.</p><p><strong>Drugs</strong></p><p>Because SAD is a form of depression, antidepressants that increase serotonin in the brain and pharmaceuticals that treat major depressive disorders - particularly B<span>upropion, or Wellbutrin XL - have </span>also been shown to work.</p><p><strong>Cognitive Behavioral Therapy</strong></p><p>CBT is a form of talk therapy that's meant to change a person's patterns of doing and thinking. Rohan said that with the approach,"we're working with a person to identify negative thought patterns and habits" and then break them. </p><p>For example: "If the person is having the repetitive thought of ' I hate winter,' we might change that to 'I prefer summer to winter,' which is more of a neutral thought," she said. <br /><br />Unlike light therapy, which is palliative (you have to keep doing it to reap the benefits) CBT can have a lasting effect from year to year, so the treatment is more of a long-term solution, Rohan said. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stanford-therapy-chatbot-depression-woebot-google-ai-2017-10">Startups in Silicon Valley</a> are working to bring this kind of talk therapy to the masses with inexpensive texting apps and chatbots.</p><h2>What to do about winter blues, even if you don't have SAD</h2><p>Most people feel a little down in the winter months - it's a time of year when <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/suicide/holiday.html">depression rates spike</a> (though suicides don't). Some clinicians refer to this sub-syndromal kind of doldrum as 'S-SAD.'<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=sunrise+winter&amp;title=Special:Search&amp;profile=default&amp;fulltext=1&amp;searchToken=bmuxl88vllsadkrryge8ory79#/media/File:Sunrise_Karkonosze_winter.jpg">Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p><p class="caption">Winter sunrise in Karkonosze, Poland.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>And there's no doubt that seasonal changes impact on our routines. A <a href="http://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1005824">November 2017 study</a> studied cell phone use data from a million people living in densely packed, artificially lit European cities. The researchers found that people were up and on the phone well past 11 or 11:30 p.m. in the summer months, while in the winter, they stopped gabbing by 10:30.</p><p>Here are some things that can help.</p><p><strong>Go for a walk first thing in the morning, just after the sunrise.</strong></p><p>"Light therapy is based on the theory that the biological clock becomes sluggish in the wintertime due to later dawns," Rohan said.</p><p>With a morning walk, you're getting aerobic exercise (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-exercise-for-brain-mental-health-2017-10">always helpful for mental health</a>) while the light is jump-starting your circadian clock.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Eric Miller</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><strong>Don't shift your routine to the couch.</strong></p><p>The fact that it's dark and cold at the end of a work day isn't a good reason to ditch your gym routine. Keep staying active, and if you enjoy winter sports, bundle up and get out there.</p><p><strong>Make an effort not to change your activity level too much.</strong></p><p>During the darker months, continue seeing people, making dates with friends, and keeping appointments.
