But modern career trajectories are rarely so cut-and-dry. They often involve quickly adapting to new roles as they develop, and for many employees, it's normal to switch companies or even industries several times in a career."When we envision a career, we imagine a direct path with a final destination. And not long ago, this concept was useful," the authors wrote. "This vision of career growth no longer matches reality. We no longer need to be good at predicting the future; we now have to succeed when the future is unpredictable."Their observations have been echoed by other modern-day executives. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said it's better to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/nextavenue/2013/03/13/sheryl-sandbergs-5-best-lean-in-tips-for-women/#2532c4242db0">think of careers as a jungle gym</a> than a ladder - there are various ways to get to the top, and some of them involve descending or hitting a dead end.Digital marketer Mitch Joel shared that sentiment, advocating in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Ctrl-Alt-Delete-Business-Depends/dp/1455523305">his 2013 book</a> that workers should be willing to change careers and evolve. "Take on a challenge within your organization, work with a new department, change something within your business that is antiquated or draconian," he wrote.Lunia and Cohen acknowledge in their article that giving up on the "career myth" can be scary, as it suggests an uncertain future. But they noted that even if your career isn't following a logical, continuous route, it doesn't mean you're wasting time."Every job you've held and every relationship you've forged is a kind of key that can unlock a future opportunity," they wrote. Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's New Year eve speech has opened up opportunities for digital lending players, including <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> in the space. 
 PM Modi had announced the inclusion of non-banking financial companies (<keyword id="6354598" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NBFCs">NBFCs</keyword>) in the credit guarantee scheme for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMEs) and also extended the scheme for loans up to Rs 2 crore. The inclusion will help new-age NBFCs such as Capital Float and Lendingkart reach out to more borrowers. 
 
"This is the first time that the government has opened the credit gua rantee scheme for NBFCs, and this is abig move. NBFCs are reaching (out) to SMEs in every nook and corner and covering us under the scheme will help in reaching out to more borrowers. So far, NBFCs had to take the entire risk only by themselves, and some were still conservative in lending to borrowers who may not have been eligible under conven tional norms," Harshvardhan Lunia, cofounder of Lendingkart, which has so far lent to 7,500 SMEs, told ET. 
 
The current credit guarantee scheme includes term loans or working capital facility up to Rs 100 lakh per SME borrower, extended without any collateral security or third-party guarantee. It was so far applicable only to scheduled commercial banks and some regional rural banks. 
 
The guarantee cover available under the scheme is to the extent of a maximum 85% of the sanctioned amount.

Here’s all that you need to know about the upcoming India Internet Day 2019

Everyone, including entrepreneurs and investors, are in a confused state right now. Valuations of firms are sky rocketing, still <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=investors">investors</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup">startup</a> founders think the numbers are justified. Even though a correction is due, investors are still pumping money like never before. 
So what is really happening? Is the startup bubble going to burst soon? 
 
Not very soon. Consumer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=internet+firms">internet firms</a> that have high valuations are hitting roadblocks as venture capitalists have started asking the companies to fix the loose ends in their business models. 
 And investors are open to pump money in newborn <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword>, which provide on-demand delivery to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cloud">cloud</a>-based software product development. 
 So basically, newborn startups have abundant opportunities and later-stage tech companies, seeking Series-B and C or follow-on institutional rounds of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword>, are likely to face a marked slowdown in growth. 
 
"Even in the US, the best companies raise rounds which are one year apart where valuation jumps are really high. Entrepreneurs should instead of focusing on jumping rounds look to create genuine value," said Anand Lunia, founder of seed-stage VC firm India Quotient. 
 
In the past 18 months, hedge funds invested millions of dollars into some of India's biggest consumer internet companies, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=snapdeal">Snapdeal</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart">Flipkart</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola">Ola</a> and Quikr, in the process driving up valuations. 
 
"From 2006 to 2008, we saw prop books and hedge funds say that they will be in India for the long run, some even having teams on ground. But after 2008, we did not see most of them in the country," said Anand Prasanna, director of US-based investment firm Morgan Creek Capital. 
 
"Investors are happy that there is some slowdown as they are now able to invest more rationally and not under pressure to pull the trigger," said an entrepreneur in talks to raise a $100-million funding round. "Those who have money in the bank will get more aggressive as they will be able to get better deals."

Sounds fun right? This is what <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+startups">Indian startups</a> are currently doing to make their employees imagine more and brainstorm for innovative ideas. What else? On-demand service company, UrbanClap has specially formed a team of four members to organise<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-25-Most-Creative-Companies-In-The-World/articleshow/26221035.cms"> fun activities for the employees</a>. 
 
As reported by The Economic Times, startups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TinyOwl">TinyOwl</a>, LivSpace, DogSpot, Junglee Games and Intellipaat belong to a separate generation of startups with a goal of having greater work engagement and more <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/12-Weird-Things-That-Tech-Companies-Do-To-Make-Their-Employees-More-Creative/articleshow/21096431.cms">out-of-the box ideas</a> that help the startups stand out. 
 
This new breed of startups, fuelled by liberal doses of funding, is basically designing a work culture that emphasizes on creative thinking and collaboration among different departments, which doesn’t happen on a daily basis. To do this, they provide a plethora of activities including health and wellness sessions, team outings, hobby classes, provisions for indoor games, movies, book clubs and much more. 
 
Suresh Bhagavatula, assistant professor of entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore says, "I have a feeling it's a function of boom time. 
 
In a boom time there is a lot of exuberance and positive thoughts or energy around; then people may want to invest in all this. If there is a recession, all this will become much more serious—it's a reflection of what is out there in the economy." 
 "China is not doing too well and I am sure Chinese startups won't be doing the same thing <keyword id="982553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-startups">Indian startups</keyword> are currently doing," Bhagavatula added. 
 
Bhagavatula, personally, isn’t much convinced with the idea of workplace fun. Bringing in light the other side he says, "It needs to be studied in greater detail than to just say that cool culture leads to better work. There has not been much research done to see whether it is actually a distraction. I assume so at some point it will become." 
 
Recently, DogSpot, a four-year-old pet supply store, has allowed its employees to bring their pets along at work. As per the company’s co-founder Rana Atheya, “it helped fill gaps in inter-department communication.” 
 
For gaming company Junglee Games, one of its periodic poker nights led to the creation of a new variant of the popular three-card game 'teen-patti', called Royal Teen Patti, which has attracted almost 2 million users. 
 
Not just this, but LivSpace, a home design and decor platform held a 48-hour design hackathon that included beer and pizza in the office. The designers were presented 1,000 photographs and design software and "we asked them to create beautiful imagery," said co-founder and CEO, Anuj Srivastava. The company revamped its website with these images, and has been attracting at least 10,000 page visitors since June, from about 3,000 earlier. 
 
"Designers haven't worked in the crazy internet world. They come from partner-driven firms where the culture's different, where owners are God. They take calls from them and here we ask for ideas," said Srivastava 
 
Anand Lunia, founder of seed-stage venture fund IndiaQuotient and also an investor in DogSpot however says, "Startups have realised (that) in their world it's not the number of people but amount of efficiency and effectiveness of each employee (that matters). This needs an environment that is conducive. Ordinary people have to perform extraordinary tasks and have to go beyond their past results." 
 
Even so, investors, too, are beginning to ask entrepreneurs about how they plan to build their startup's work culture, although this is not a prerequisite to signing a cheque. "Smart, experienced investors understand that apart from numbers and metrics it's important to build an organisation, especially at a time where companies are growing fast," said Varun Khaitan, co-founder of UrbanClap, which is backed by SAIF Partners, Accel Partners and Snapdeal co-founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal. 
 
But the litmus test will be when the chips are down, said entrepreneur-turned-investor Ronnie Screwvala. "If you are 15 days late with salary, will it make a difference if you have a dart board in the office, are eating 'pani puri' on Wednesdays or going to the pub on Fridays? I don't think so," said Screwvala. 
 
"No one has gone through that right now, because they are still in their multiple funding rounds," he added.

OK, probably a lot of things. 
For some people, surprises are absolutely terrifying. 
But there's actually a lot of value in that, Tania Luna of Surprise Industries tells Business Insider.
In fact, Luna and her sister, Kat Dudina, have built an entire business devoted to surprising people and companies like <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, Etsy, and Bit.ly.
Some of these surprises could involve zombies, circus performers, fire-eaters, spy training, target practice, mazes, and speakeasys. It's all about getting you out of your comfort zone. 
"Usually we as people decide what we like and don't like," Luna says.
But Luna, who has a background in psychology, says that it's important to sometimes let fate decide for you, or to simply throw yourself into new, unplanned situations where you don't know what the outcome will be. 
That's the idea behind <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword> City-based <a href="http://surpriseindustries.com/" target="_blank">Surprise Industries</a>, which Luna and Dudina started back in 2008. The goal is to help people grow, and learn more about themselves and others. 
"It was ironic for me because I violently hated surprises," Luna says. "But [Kate] likes surprising people."
Now, five years later, Luna says she genuinely feels like a different person. 
Surprise Industries initially set out to host public surprises and charge about $25 per surprise, but has since started to focus a lot more on companies.
"Part of it had to do with my own personal transformation, and allowing myself to give up control," Lunia says. "We started working with companies, less from the perspective of 'this is fun,' and more from, 'how does your company handle surprises?' Are they able to handle uncertainty and ambiguity?" 
Surprise Industries especially sees itself as a training center for tech companies, Luna says, because change is such a norm and happens very quickly in the tech world. 
"We never thought [Bit.ly and Etsy] would need us because they already seemed so comfortable with surprise," Luna says. "We realized they're the best clients because they get the need for it and they understand that you can't really run a business the same way as you did 20 years ago."
Starting next year, Surprise Industries will start to work exlcuively with anywhere from 10- to 12 companies per year. The idea is to help these companies create silly and weird, but professional cultures where people aren't afraid to make mistakes, Luna says.
"Being interesting, playful, and weird helps you make more money," Luna says. 
Surprise Industries has been profitable since 2011 and has a projected 2014 revenue of $450,000. To date, the company has planned over 2,500 surprises. 
"It's interesting that it almost feels like from what we see in NY, tech companies set norms for things like cultural value," Luna says. "Even things like perks in a company. I think a lot of that has to do with becoming better and better. They have to get better at handling surprise and uncertainty. They have to operate like a bunch of explorers. It will be very exciting to see more companies catch up. It's so much more open. There are so many more opportunities for individuals to feel empowered and express their ideas. To me, that seems like a much happier place to work."
