Business Insider contacted a number of people who were receiving income under what was supposed to be a three-year pilot project put into place by Ontario's previous government.It lasted only one year, despite Ford's campaign promise to keep the pilot project funded. "I feel I have been stabbed in the back by my own government," 29-year-old Alana Baltzer, a basic income recipient, told Business Insider in an interview. "I honestly have no idea what's happening next because there has been no communication whatsoever."<h2>The pilot project was supposed to run for three years - it lasted one </h2>Basic income is a system in which everyone regularly receives a check from the government, regardless of income.In Ontario's program, which is more of a modified basic income experiment, people who received the stipend had to meet a certain income threshold.Under the program, people who made less than $34,000 (CAD) per year were eligible to receive up to $17,000 annually, and couples who made under $48,000 received up to $24,000 per year, minus 50% of any earned income. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/basic-income-study-kenya-redefining-nature-of-work-2018-1">Kenya</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finland-to-end-basic-income-experiment-2018-4">Finland</a>, and a handful of other countries and cities have rolled out experimental basic income pilots, intending to hand the results over to social scientists and economists to evaluate whether it helps lift people out of poverty.When Ontario's previous Liberal government began one of the biggest basic income experiments in the world in July 2017 - extending the pilot project to 4,000 residents - activists around the world were <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/40532513/inside-ontarios-big-bold-basic-income-experiment">hopeful</a>. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">REUTERS/Thomas WhiteFord canceled the program despite campaigning on a promise to fund it for the three-year duration.</div></div></div>But when Ford's Progressive Conservative Party took office on June 29, priorities shifted, and the $150 million project was suddenly canceled. Some recipients on Wednesday received an email saying their payments would continue through August, but didn't receive any further details on when the program would be phased out, <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/basic-income-ontario-admits-breaking-promise-1.4770772">CBC</a> reported. Basic income advocates around the world slammed the Ford government's decision. "I am so angry right now, I am shaking," Scott Santens, a prominent basic income advocate, <a href="https://twitter.com/scottsantens/status/1024416083145621504">said</a> on Twitter. "Can you imagine a politician pulling the plug on a vaccine that was dramatically reducing cancer so much that it's already arguably unethical to not immediately expand it to everyone?"Hugh Segal, a former Conservative senator and one of the architects of the basic income pilot, said the "new Ontario government is obviously deeply challenged on the issue of fairness," in a <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-doug-ford-speaks-for-the-people-just-not-low-income-people/">scathing editorial</a> in The Globe and Mail following the project's cancellation. Tom Cooper, the director of the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction, a local advocacy group, told Business Insider that people were "left reeling" after the program was canceled. <h2>'Anger and disillusionment' </h2>Some of the people involved in the project told Business Insider they suffered from mental health issues and relied on the money provided for items like food and winter coats. The money also served as a financial runway while they searched for jobs.Dave Cherkewski, a 46-year-old Hamilton, Ontario resident, told Business Insider he fell into poverty and suffered mental health issues after leaving his job at a telecommunications company."At times, I didn't know where I was going to sleep, I didn't know where my next meal would come from," Cherkewski told Business Insider. After living in poverty for 15 years, Cherkewski said he learned to survive on very little money - "10 or 13 thousand dollars a year.""This basic pilot was a huge ray of hope," he said. "Which was something I don't buy into early because I have grown up in low-income and I realize life isn't a whole bunch of sunshine."When he was informed of the pilot project's cancellation by a local CBC reporter, he said his initial reaction was "shock."That sense of shock and disbelief was echoed by Baltzer, a basic income recipient. "It's just a lot of anger and disillusionment at the Ontario government right now," she said. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Chris Wattie/ReutersBasic income advocates are looking to the federal government to continue funding the project, but even they acknowledge it's a long-shot.</div></div></div>For Baltzer, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, the stipend was the difference between having enough money to live on every month and struggling to get by on the Ontario government's disability support program."It showed me what it's like to live with dignity and freedom," she said.Jaylynn Rose, a 21-year-old participant in the pilot program who said she suffers from mental health issues, told Business Insider cutting off the basic income program would "put so many people even deeper into poverty."Rose said she hoped to use the money from the pilot project to apply to college, but now, she'll have no way to afford it."I feel very betrayed by the Ontario government," Rose said. <h2>Basic income creates the incentive to find a job, according to recipients</h2>Lisa MacLeod, Ontario's Minister of Children, Community, and Social Services, <a href="https://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2018/08/01/ontario-minister-admits-she-broke-election-promise-when-she-axed-basic-income-project.html">told reporters</a> the basic income project was a "disincentive" for people to look for work. Baltzer, however, says it's motivation. "It is kind of hard to find a job when you are struggling for food and you don't have money to keep your phone active, and it goes down out of service," she said. " You can't afford to buy job clothing. You can't even do laundry to wash job interview clothing."On a basic income, Baltzer said she could eat healthier, buy clothes, go to the gym, do laundry, and afford phone and internet service to communicate with potential employers.Two-thirds of basic income recipients involved in the pilot program were already working, according to Cooper, the local advocate."These are folks who may be working one or two part-time jobs but just not earning enough money at those jobs or getting enough hours to pull themselves and their families out of poverty," Cooper said. "These individuals were optimistic about the future, and I think for many of them, it's a sense of betrayal. Amazon's five-days-in-the-office mandate could be the start of a wider RTO shift

Amazon also assures that the digital assistant can bypass the delay of sending information from the moon to Earth and back. Alexa will be able to provide answers to mission-specific questions such as, ““Alexa, how fast is Orion traveling?” or “Alexa, what’s the temperature in the cabin?” Alexa will also be able to control connected devices inside the spacecraft like in-cabin lighting. Astronauts can also get information from Earth through Alexa such as news briefings and sports scores so that the astronauts are always updated. “The Star Trek computer was part of our original inspiration for Alexa, so it’s exciting and humbling to see our vision for ambient intelligence come to life on board Orion,” said Aaron Rubenson, Vice President of Alexa Everywhere at Amazon. Come Wednesday (June 3), Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a state of emergency and criticised the company officials over untimely response. He has directed officials to investigate the matter and the power plant has been detained. The officials at the Federal Agency for Fishery under the Russian government are calling it a “ecological catastrophe.” It is now believed that the Arctic Circle will take decades to recover from this. The pillars that supported the tank started to sink and the fuel tank lost pressure and the oil and lubricants seeped out of the tank causing fire across a wide area of 350 square metres. The oil spilled over 12 kilometer, turning the river red. However, this has not happened for the first time. Four years ago, Norilsk Nickel reported an accident that also turned a river red. "...It can already be said now that it will take decades for the restoration of the ecological balance of the affected Norilo-Pyasinsky water system," Klokov, the official at the Federal Agency <a href="https://energy.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/oil-and-gas/arctic-river-will-take-decades-to-recover-from-fuel-spill-russian-official/76166505">reportedly said</a>. These aren't dramatic moves, but there's not showing any impressive bounceback of follow through.
US futures are basically flat.
Not helping things is news that the Ukrainian acting President says that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303887804579502892789915218?mod=djemalertNEWS">military operations have begun in the Eastern part of the country</a> to crack down on pro-Russian rebels.
Also, money supply data out of China was weak.

NASA's leadership in space exploration is what makes it one of the most inspiring and beloved agencies, but some feel that NASA has gotten stuck. It's budget isn't declining, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/opportunity-survival-nasa-budget-cuts-2015-3">but it's not growing either</a>. And if we're not careful, other space programs are going to step up and fill the role of space exploration leader.One up-and-coming contender is China. China's space program is showing the same kind of explosive growth as its economy, said Chris Impey, an astronomy professor at the University of Arizona, during an <a href="Chris Impey, an astronomy professor at the University of Arizona,">interview with NPR's Fresh Air host Terry Gross</a>. That means it has grown roughly 10% a year for the past decade. While that amount is slipping a little and will likely slow down in the next few years, the bottom line is that China's space program is expanding, and NASA's is starting to flounder.<h3>China makes its debut</h3>It's easy to forget about China when it comes to space exploration. It didn't launch its first satellite until 1970, after the U.S. had already put several in orbit and even landed men on the moon. China didn't even send a taikonaut (China's word for astronaut) to space until 2003. And since the beginning of its space program, China benefited a great deal from Russian technologies, Impey wrote in his book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Future-Space-Chris-Impey/dp/0393239306">Beyond: Our Future in Space</a>." For example, China use to buy old Russian rockets and reverse-engineer them.That's all changing quickly though."But now the Chinese are innovating and vaulting ahead," Impey writes. "Their <a href="http://www.space.com/21957-china-rocket-engine-test-space-station.html">Long March rocket</a> is original and has quickly eclipsed Russian rockets."And innovation is one of the most important things China has going for it, Impey said."And they're actually - unlike the one of the stereotypes that they're just sort of copying our technology - they're actually innovating," Impey says during NPR's interview. Since then, China has successfully tested several lunar orbiters and landers in hopes of sending humans to the moon, which it says it can accomplish by 2022. There's even rumor of a collaboration between China and Russia to set up a lunar base.NASA is focused on Mars, and getting humans there by the 2030s. But <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/buzz-aldrin-wants-a-colony-on-mars-2015-3">many have said that </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/buzz-aldrin-wants-a-colony-on-mars-2015-3">a lunar strategy</a> might prove the better choice for the US space agency in the long run."The real problem [in the US] is the lack of direction and commitment," Jeffrey <a href="http://www.space.com/27893-china-space-program-moon-mars.html">Plescia told Space.com</a>. "I think, like others, that the moon is key to understanding how to live and work in space and explore the solar system."China is also building its own space station. Called the Tiangong 2 space lab, its first piece could be launched as soon as next year, followed by a manned crew to make contact with the lab. The main module of the lab will launch in 2018, and the whole thing could be finished as soon as 2022.That's around the time the International Space Station, which NASA is intimately involved with (and China is not), is planned to be decommissioned, then allowed to fall to Earth and burn up. As of right now, there are no plans for a replacement.Experts estimate that China spends <a href="http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=11007">about $2 billion</a> on its space program every year. It's difficult to draw direct comparisons to NASA's roughly $18 billion budget because of currency conversion, but it's clear that even though they are investing heavily in space, China is still spending a much smaller amount of its overall GDP on its space program than the US (based on 2014 GDP, the US spends about 10%, while China spends less than 1%).The country's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-secretive-space-program-takes-a-step-into-the-open-2015-1">new launch facility on the island of Hainan</a> is almost open for business.<h3>A space conspiracy?</h3>It's pretty clear US officials are wary of China's progress in space. NASA personnel are prohibited from working with the Chinese, and the Chinese can't visit any NASA building without explicit permission and a waiver. This is the same policy that has blocked China's involvement with the International Space Station.The US's caution isn't entirely unfounded. China's space program is essentially run by the military. The People's Liberation Army has a huge influence over the program. "All of that activity is classic space control. If you combine these activities with their anti-satellite warfare experience, it's pretty clear what they are up to. I think that's their real agenda."In other words, it looked a little like a military drill in space.Still, not everyone thinks that's China's ultimate goal. Gregory Kulacki, senior analyst and China project manager for the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said people have misunderstood China's intentions when they assume the nation is pursuing a space war strategy.Kulacki <a href="http://www.space.com/27893-china-space-program-moon-mars.html">told Space.com</a> that "the strategic objective of Chinese space policy is not to exploit asymmetry between China and the United States, but to end it."There's no way to know for sure right now. China's space program could completely crush its competition

But planetary scientists have eyed one of its moons, Europa, for years.Researchers are convinced that below Europa's icy crust, a warm, salty ocean exists that contains <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/oceans-on-planets-and-moons-infrographic-2015-9">more than twice as much water</a> as all of Earth's reserves combined.That vast subsurface ocean could mean Europa is the most likely place we could find <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/why-aliens-have-not-contacted-humans-2015-9">alien life</a> in our Solar System.As Musk somewhat understated, a mission to Europa "would be cool":<div></div>The "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-reveals-its-new-falcon-heavy-rocket-2015-1">Falcon Heavy</a>" is Musk's next planned rocket. SpaceX has yet to build and launch one, but the <a href="http://www.spacex.com/falcon-heavy">company's website states</a> that the 230-foot-tall machine could be ready as soon as 2016 and lift "a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel" into orbit around the Earth.The "Dragon," meanwhile, is SpaceX's capsule that can ferry people and supplies into space. (Musk recently used Instagram to show how he envisions using a Dragon to <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/elon-musk-instagram-shows-how-to-land-humans-on-mars-2015-9">send humans to Mars</a>.)Musk's idea for a Europa mission certainly got some support from scientists:<div></div>Though others, like mechanical engineer Lars Osborne, are a little more skeptical of Musk's ability to get us there:<div></div>The last spacecraft we sent to Europa was NASA's Galileo spacecraft in the 1990s. Galileo couldn't hold people or supplies - it was a robotic probe - and it wasn't equipped with the right instruments to investigate all of the secrets scientists now suspect Europa holds.Europa's giant ocean exists due to Jupiter's massive size. The planet's huge gravitational pull pushes and pulls on the ice moon's rocky core, heating up the interior with enough friction that scientists believe it could melt ice into liquid water.If enough nutrients are floating around in that water, it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/types-of-alien-life-on-europa-2015-2?_ga=1.195568111.27824499.1438868614">might contain life</a> similar to the bacteria and tiny creatures that hang around hydrothermal vents at the bottom of Earth's oceans. It turns out that the most popular word of 2014 wasn't actually a word at all.
According to a&#xa0;<a href="http://www.languagemonitor.com/">new list by the Global Language Monitor</a>, the heart emoji was the most commonly used word in the English language this year.&#xa0;
GLM analyzed social media, blogs, and 275,000 print and electronic publications to determine its ranking. 
Words had to be used at least 25,000 times globally to qualify for the list. They also had to be used across industries and in several different forms of media.
The heart emoji was used billions of times a day around the globe. It was the first time in the ranking's 15-year history that a symbol earned the top honors.&#xa0;
"Hashtag" came in second, and "vape" was third.&#xa0;
Of course, words like "the" were used way more frequently than some of the words on the list, but&#xa0;Paul JJ Payack, the founder of&#xa0;<a href="http://www.languagemonitor.com/trending-words/404-is-the-top-word-toxic-politics-the-top-phrase-pope-francis-the-top-name-of-2013/">GLM</a>,&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/most-used-words-and-phrases-of-2013-2013-11">told Business Insider last year</a> that GLM's rankings "distilled words that impact language in the news and global discussion."&#xa0;
Last's year's top word was also not technically a word; it was&#xa0;404"&#xa0;-&#xa0;as in the error message that appears when a web page can't load.
<h2>The Top Words of 2014</h2>
1. The Heart ? Emoji (for love)&#xa0;- People usually use the heart emoji to express love or warm feelings.&#xa0;
2. Hashtag&#xa0;-&#xa0;A repurposed pound sign, still powerful thanks to Twitter and Instagram.
3. Vape -&#xa0;Short for vaporize, or vaping, the act of smoking an electronic or e-cigarette.
4. Blood Moon -&#xa0;Four total eclipses of the moon in an eighteen-month span. Some Christians see it as presaging a lunar apocalypse.
5. Nano -&#xa0;From Greek for dwarf, small;&#xa0;now&#xa0;1 billionth of a meter. It's used in any number of words surrounding&#xa0;nano technology.
6. Photobomb -&#xa0;Breaking into a photograph without permission. &#xa0;
7. Caliphate -&#xa0;A&#xa0;land ruled by an Islamic Caliph, typically governed under Sharia Law.
8. Privilege -&#xa0;The alleged advantages of having lighter colored skin in a diverse society.
9. Bae - A millennial's term of endearment.
10. "Bash" Tag -&#xa0;Co-opting a brand's hashtag to undermine it.
11. Transparency - A&#xa0;state of openness, usually used in reference to the government.
12. Sustainable -&#xa0;Environmentally conscious lifestyle choices. 
13. Clickbait -&#xa0;A link structured so that you just have to click on it.
14. Quindecennial -&#xa0;Fifteen-year anniversary of an event.
15. Comet -&#xa0;Comet 67p had a visitor from the Rosetta Spacecraft this fall.
