On the evening of November 8, as the <keyword id="6359982" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="earth" source="Orion">Earth</keyword>'s shadow envelopes its sole satellite for nearly one-and-half hours, the world will witness a thrilling and chilling spectacle of a '<keyword id="2198098" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="blood-moon" source="Orion">Blood Moon</keyword>' <keyword id="90051" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lunar-eclipse" source="Orion">lunar eclipse</keyword>, a prominent astronomer said here on Monday. Coming exactly 14 days (two Tuesdays) after the October 25 partial solar eclipse -- the lunar eclipse will be seen in totality in the northeastern states, but shall be only partially visible in the rest of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> in the evening as the <keyword id="24879" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sun" source="Orion">sun</keyword> sets, said Prof. Bharat Adur, Director, Akash Ganga Centre for Astronomy (AGCA) here. "Tomorrow, the Earth's looming shadow will cover the <keyword id="42440" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="moon" source="Orion">Moon</keyword> and during this period it will appear a dark reddish colour, almost like a large drop of blood balanced in the sky... This phenomenon is called a 'Blood Moon' and it's an exciting spectacle," said Prof. Adur. He urged the people to view it wherever possible, as this will be the last total lunar eclipse, and the next one (total lunar eclipse) due only after three years on September 7, 2025. The Earth will come between the Sun and Moon and the blue planet's monstrous shadow -- from a staggering distance of 3.93 lakh kms -- will shroud its small natural satellite, partially or fully, depending on the angle of alignment from where it is viewed, Prof. Adur explained. The Sun is around 109 times bigger than Earth and over 148-million kms away, while the Earth is nearly four times larger than the Moon, with an average distance of 3,85 lakh kms separating them. "In a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is entirely blanketed by the Earth's darkest shadow, called the 'umbra', and at this time, the Moon appears a dark-reddish colour, or what is called the 'Blood Moon' phenomenon," Prof. Adur said. In scientific terms, it's called the 'Rayleigh Scattering' as during a lunar eclipse the only sunlight that reaches the Moon passes through the Earth's atmosphere, thus turning the Moon an apparent reddish colour. This is the second celestial event since the last partial Solar Eclipse (October 25), and can be witnessed by people in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, parts of Asia, Russia, North and South Americas, Australia, North Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean regions. Despite the scary myths or deep religious aspects associated with any eclipse (solar/lunar), Prof. Adur assured that there is absolutely no harm in viewing the unusual 'Blood Moon' on Tuesday with naked eyes or with binoculars which will enhance the reddish colour. The northeastern parts of India like Kohima, Agartala, Guwahati and other regions in the world will witness it in totality on Tuesday, the final eclipse of 2022. As the Moon will be below the horizon during the eclipse hours, most other parts of India will miss the exciting starting phases of both the partial and total eclipse, he said. Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai along with Mumbai, can witness only the partial phase, and in the country's commercial capital barely 14 per cent of the Moon's obscuration can be viewed at 18.03 hours in the setting sun. However, the Moon will be seen 60 per cent covered in Nagpur, 66 per cent in Srinagar and in varying degrees in other cities, said Prof. Adur. In case people miss the 'Blood Moon' on Tuesday, they can wait for October 28, 2023, when there will be another partial lunar eclipse that will be visible in some parts of the country, Prof. Adur smiled. However, since its a penumbral lunar eclipse — it can be little difficult to differentiate from a normal Full Moon. A lunar eclipse or <keyword id="4015484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandra-Grahan">Chandra Grahan</keyword> occurs when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon. Since the Moon can’t generate its own light, the Earth interference blocks out the Sun’s light and casts a shadow over the moon. During a penumbral lunar eclipse, three celestial bodies aren’t perfectly aligned. In fact, it’s only the Earth’s outer shadow — the penumbra — that gets cast over the moon. When you click a picture of the moon, the app will be able to detect the change in colour before, during and the after the lunar eclipse. The ideal way to do this would be to click the first picture before 11:15 pm on June 5 when the lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan is set to begin. Click the second picture at around 12:54 am on June 6 when the maximum eclipse is supposed to come in to play. The final picture should be clicked after 2:24 am on June 6, when the lunar eclipse is scheduled to come to an end. You’ll just have to keep your fingers crossed that good weather conditions hold up in order for the Moon to be clearly visible in the night sky. DSLR with 200mm focal lens A camera will a minimum 200mm focal lens is also a good way to catch the Moon’s changing hues. It helps if you have a tripod on which to mount the camera in order to take the picture. The longer the lens, the better the pictures will be. Attach your smartphone to a telescope Not everyone has a telescope lying around at home. Friday’s lunar eclipse might be difficult to spot — here’s how you catch the difference

<ul><li>This year's first lunar eclipse will happen on January 10 — the 'Wolf Moon'.</li><li>However, it will not be a Super Moon since the natural satellite won't be at its closest point to the Earth. </li><li>The moon will only hit perigee on January 14, three days after the lunar eclipse and full moon on January 10.</li></ul>The 'Wolf Moon' lunar eclipse, or <keyword id="4015484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chandra-Grahan">chandra grahan</keyword>, is slated to take place this Friday on January 10. But, it won't be a Super Moon — the biggest the moon can be in the night sky. The natural satellite's orbit around the planet isn't circular but shaped like an eclipse. So a Super Moon only happens when the moon is as its closest to the earth — a point in its orbit called the perigee. At this point, the moon is around 363,300 kilometres away. In comparison, at apogee — the further point from earth in the moon's orbit — it is around 405,500 kilometres away. On Friday, the moon will still be <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/distance.html">four days away</a> from that point. By the time it reaches, the lunar eclipse will be long over and it will no longer be a full moon.

That being said, even while using eclipse glasses, NASA recommends shielding one’s eyes before looking up at the sky during a solar eclipse. Only remove the glasses if you’ve completely looked away or once the solar eclipse is over — not before. While it’s tempting to use a camera to capture the event or use a telescope or binoculars to catch a closer view, scientists advise against it — even if a person is using eclipse glasses at the time. In doing so, one runs the risk of the concentrated solar rays could causing injury. For near or farsighted, they don’t need to take off their glasses in order to view the eclipse. The eclipse glasses can just go over them. In case that feels uncomfortable, they have the option to opt for a hand-held viewer instead. Don’ts during the solar eclipse Driving during a solar eclipse isn’t recommended. According to the American Automobile Association (<a href="https://exchange.aaa.com/safety/driving-advice/aaa-tips-drivers-solar-eclipse/">AAA</a>), people should drive with their headlights on and safely park their car before observing the event — with adequate protection with the proper gear. But life isn’t perfect, and circumstances may dictate that one may have to be on the road. In such cases, watch out for other distracted drivers. AAA advises drivers should keep some additional space between cars and account for the fact they’ll be driving slower on the day.
