PMI data released on Tuesday reinforced expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to commence policy easing soon. Private-sector activity surged to nearly a year-high, buoyed by a strong services sector and Germany's return to growth. “Domestic equity benchmarks on Tuesday, continued to rise for the third day in a row, buoyed by strong global market trends. The volatility index, India VIX, fell by 19.72% to settle at 10.20, indicating low volatility in the market. Finally, the Nifty closed the day on a positive note at 22,368. Technically, after the strong pullback rally, the index is likely to pause near 22,500-22,530 levels. If the index sustains above 22,530, the Nifty could attempt to break its all-time high of 22,776; otherwise, the index could witness consolidation in the 22,000-22,500 zone. The short-term support levels for Nifty are at 22,200 and 22,000, while resistance levels are 22,450 and 22,530," said Asit C Mehta Investment Interrmediates. ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos suggested that a rate cut in June is highly probable, barring any unforeseen economic developments, leading to a rise in the euro against the dollar. Treasuries remained stable ahead of upcoming bond auctions, despite yields reaching their highest levels in 2024. In the UK, the 10-year yield saw a slight uptick following the government's decision to increase the planned bond issuance for the fiscal year, contributing to one of the largest gilt packages on record. Gold prices continued their decline amid reduced geopolitical tensions and indications of a prolonged period of higher interest rates by the Fed. Oil prices edged higher amidst ongoing developments between Israel and Iran, with signs of easing tensions following recent confrontations. "The Bank Nifty was clearly an underperforming sector as compared to Nifty in today’s trading session. On expected lines, it respected our mentioned resistance zone of 48,000-200 in the last couple of days and marginal profit booking was witnessed after testing the same.Presently, it is trading near a crucial resistance zone of 48,000 to 48,200 levels and we believe that Bank nifty would further outperform only if it is able to decisively close above this resistance zone or else profit booking is likely from the current levels," said Tejas Shah, Technical Research, JM Financial and BlinkX. Nifty sees modest gain, Sensex inches higher; Market sentiment remains cautious amid global developments

In light of the ongoing high inflation pressures, the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (<keyword id="60971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ECB" source="Orion">ECB</keyword>) decided to raise the key interest rates by 25 basis points (100 basis points makes 1 percentage points). Raising interest rates typically help in cooling demand in the economy and thus helps in managing inflation. Accordingly, the interest rate on the main refinancing operations and the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility will be increased to 3.75%, 4.00% and 3.25% respectively, with effect from 10 May 2023. The ECB has hiked rates repeatedly since July last year to rein in high inflation. Prior to the latest hike, the extent of the hike was 50 basis points. In its monetary policy statement, the ECB said the inflation outlook continues to be "too high for too long". Energy prices have dropped sharply in recent months but prices for food and services are still rising strongly. "Headline inflation has declined over recent months, but underlying price pressures remain strong. At the same time, the past rate increases are being transmitted forcefully to euro area financing and monetary conditions, while the lags and strength of transmission to the real economy remain uncertain," the statement added. It believes the ongoing monetary policy actions will ensure that the policy rates will be brought to levels sufficiently restrictive to achieve a timely return of inflation to the 2 per cent medium-term target and will be kept at those levels for as long as necessary. According to Eurostat's estimate, inflation was 7.0 per cent in April, after having dropped from 8.5 per cent in February to 6.9 per cent in March. April's was reportedly the first increase after five consecutive monthly declines. "Our future interest rate moves will depend on how we see the economy and inflation developing and how well our rate hikes are taming inflation," ECB said. Further, on business activity status, Christine Lagarde, President of the ECB, Luis de Guindos, Vice-President of the ECB said the business and consumer confidence have recovered steadily in recent months but remain weaker than before the war in Ukraine. "We see a divergence across sectors of the economy. The manufacturing sector is working through a backlog of orders, but its prospects are worsening. The services sector is growing more strongly, especially owing to the reopening of the economy," they told reporters. ECB hikes interest rates by 25 bps in fight against inflation

Greece is negotiating a third bailout of up to €50 billion

Greece's finance minister channels FDR: 'I welcome their hatred'

The paper cites a lack of "really effective action" and Athens' recent re-hiring of public employees who were previously made redundant under austerity measures as reasons for the IMF's stance.Every recent IMF repayment by Greece has been hotly anticipated, with analysts attempting to work out which of the major disbursements Athens will fail to make. El Mundo notes that the only countries which have previously defaulted with the IMF are Zimbabwe, Somalia and Sudan.If the report is accurate, that would leave any future deal completely in the hands of the Eurogroup (the bloc of eurozone finance ministers), the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB). Many Eurogroup members are already reluctant to foot the bill, and will not be happy to hear they're taking a bigger chunk.The current tranche of €7.2 billion ($8.05 billion, £5.17 billion) that's being negotiated with Greece's new government is the final instalment of the second bailout package. After that, any new deal would have to start afresh.Greece's first and second bailout were worth a combined €240 billion. Nobody expects a third package to be that large, but Spanish finance minister Luis de Guindos has hinted at a bailout worth around €50 billion. Here's what HSBC European economist Fabio Balboni had this to say in a note: The focus of the negotiations appears to be shifting to the third programme of financial assistance needed after June, also raising the possibility of a referendum to decide on the agreed set of reforms and, ultimately, Greece's eurozone membership. Creditors appear to be more favourable towards this option, possibly also as a way to overcome the lack of trust towards Greece's authorities. A referendum could also provide a facesaving strategy for the Greek government.The official position of the Greek government is that it wants no more bailout deals, and wants to go back to the start to renegotiate Greece's debts entirely, modelled on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Agreement_on_German_External_Debts">1953 London agreement on German debts</a>. REPORT: The IMF won't join in a third bailout for Greece

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Starting Monday, Spanish police will inspect and fine Uber drivers in Madrid for carrying passengers without required licenses, <a href="http://novobrief.com/spain-trying-push-uber-country-drivers-will-face-fines-e18000/">according to Novobrief</a>.
Fines will range from €4,000 to €6,000 (about $5,000 to $7,500), and could be as much as €18,000 (roughly $22,000).
Repeat offenses <a href="http://www.thelocal.es/20141006/madrid-starts-fining-users-of-uber-taxi-app">could lead to drivers losing their cars</a>, according to The Local, an English-language Spanish publication.
UberPOP, Uber's European operation, initially <a href="http://blog.uber.com/uberPOP-barcelona_EN">launched in Barcelona</a> in April. It launched in Madrid <a href="http://blog.uber.com/uberPOP-madrid_EN">just weeks ago</a>.
UberPOP is different than UberX, the standard Uber car in the US, because it allows you to split the fare with multiple passengers. In addition, UberPOP drivers use their own cars to drive people around - not just high-end vehicles. Essentially, UberPOP is Uber's European Lyft killer.
The problem with UberPOP, however, is that it's illegal across Spain. Here's Article 1 of <a href="https://www.fomento.gob.es/MFOM.CP.Web/handlers/pdfhandler.ashx?idpub=TTW001">Spain's current transportation legislature</a>, which has been <a href="http://tech.eu/news/uber-drives-legal-obstacles-time-barcelona/">translated by tech.eu</a>:

In other words, private transportation services like UberPOP requires licenses to operate in Spain. 
"The main issue is that current regulation limits the number of such permits to a thirtieth of all taxi licenses, establishing a significant barrier of entry for new companies in the space," according to <a href="http://novobrief.com/spain-trying-push-uber-country-drivers-will-face-fines-e18000/">NovoBrief's Jaime Novoa</a>, who has covered the ridesharing industry within Spain. "UberPOP relies on private drivers and vehicles to offer its services in a way to avoid having VTC licenses. If Uber were to launch services like UberSUV, UberX or Uber 'black cars' it would have to get approval from the government via those permits."

This weekend, Catalonia's government said it would <a href="http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/2256679/0/cambio-ley-taxis/inmovilizar-coche/uber-barcelona/">change local laws to punish Uber drivers and protect taxis</a>, according to Spanish news outlet 20 Minutos. The proposed changes would fine drivers and keep them off the road if drivers didn't have proper licenses, similar to those enacted by Madrid on Monday.
Uber has been having a hard time in Europe. Its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-german-courts-uphold-ban-on-uber-ride-share-service-2014-9">use in Berlin and Hamburg</a> has been hotly contested recently. Paris taxi drivers <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-01-13/paris-cabbies-slash-tires-smash-windshields-in-protest-against-uber">protested the app</a> earlier this year. Taxi drivers in Spain have <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2014/jun/11/taxi-drivers-across-europe-protest-uber-app-in-pictures">protested numerous times</a> since the app launched in Spain.
Unlike Uber drivers, taxi drivers say they're paying for taxes, insurance, and licenses, and Uber gives them unfair competition. Spain's Economy Minister Luis de Guindos <a href="http://www.thelocal.es/20140618/minister-tells-taxi-drivers-to-adapt-to-new-app">sided with Uber earlier this year,</a> telling taxi drivers they'd just have to adapt to new technologies.
