The stock of Reliance Power dropped 4.99 per cent to hit the lower circuit limit of Rs 32.73 on the BSE. Shares of Reliance Home Finance Ltd tumbled 4.93 per cent to Rs 4.24 -- the lowest trading permissible limit for the day. Reliance Communications dived 4.92 per cent to touch the lower circuit of Rs 2.32. Reliance Infrastructure also declined 2.90 per cent to Rs 205.55. Shares of Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Home Finance and Reliance Power had slumped on Friday also. Sebi has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Ambani and restrained him from serving as a director or Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) in any listed company or Sebi-registered entity for five years. Besides, a fine ranging Rs 21 crore to Rs 25 crore has been levied on 24 entities. Also, the regulator barred Reliance Home Finance from the securities market for six months and slapped a fine of Rs 6 lakh on it. After receiving multiple complaints alleging the diversion/siphoning of funds of Reliance Home Finance Ltd, Sebi conducted an investigation for the period of FY 2018-19 to ascertain any regulatory violations. In its probe, Sebi found that <keyword id="19902194" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Ambani" source="keywords">Anil Ambani</keyword>, with the help of RHFL's KMPs -- Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhalkar and Pinkesh R Shah -- have orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to "siphon off" funds from RHFL by disguising them as loans to entities linked to him. Although the board of directors of RHFL had issued strong directives to stop such lending practices and review corporate loans regularly, the company's management ignored these orders. Sebi, in its 222-page order on Thursday, noted the cavalier approach by the company's management and promoter in approving loans worth hundreds of crores to companies that had little to no assets, cash flow, net worth, or revenue. This suggests a sinister objective behind the 'loans'. The situation becomes even more suspicious when considering that many of these borrowers were closely linked to the promoters of RHFL. Eventually, most of these borrowers failed to repay their loans, causing RHFL to default on its own debt obligations. This led to the company's resolution under the RBI Framework, leaving its public shareholders in a difficult position.

However, Sue — who requested to go by her first name only to protect her privacy — was unable to find full-time work as a counselor, and since she wasn't making a consistent income over the past decade, she was sometimes unable to fulfill the full amount of her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-repayment-issues-debt-relief-broken-industry-2023-9">monthly student-loan payments</a>.Sue's student-loan balance now stands at just over $84,000, according to documents reviewed by Business Insider. After retiring during the pandemic, she primarily <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peak-boomer-scared-to-retire-working-depleted-savings-social-security-2024-4">relies on her Social Security checks</a> and any money she can get from babysitting or dog walking to afford her student-loan payments, along with other bills like rent and utilities."I've been living in the same apartment for about 12 years," Sue told BI. "It's a very small, cramped apartment, and I can't afford to move out. I can just make it with what I have."President Joe Biden's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-debt-borrowers-apply-income-driven-repayment-save-plan-2023-7">SAVE student-loan repayment plan</a> brought Sue some relief. Implemented last summer, the SAVE plan is a new income-driven repayment plan intended to give millions of borrowers lower monthly payments and a shorter timeline for loan forgiveness. Prior to SAVE, Sue said she was paying around $300 a month, but after switching to the new plan, her payments were lowered to under $50.But the future of those low payments is uncertain. Two groups of GOP state attorneys general filed lawsuits to block the SAVE plan, and on August 9, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-blocked-cheaper-student-loan-payments-relief-new-ruling-2024-8">blocked the plan in its entirety</a> pending a final decision. That meant that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-blocked-cheaper-student-loan-payments-relief-new-ruling-2024-8">8 million borrowers enrolled in SAVE</a> — including Sue — were placed on forbearance until courts decide whether Biden's administration can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-facing-touch-repayment-debt-cancellation-save-relief-2024-8">move forward with the cheaper payments</a> borrowers were hoping for."I'm a struggling, working poor person. Why are they doing this? It just seems to me so unfair," Sue said. "They think that giving us a break is not fair to the people who had to pay. But that's kind of a ridiculous thing to say because the people who managed to pay, great. But there are some people who are in this spiral forever."<h2 id="c37156e0-b5af-4c1f-9122-f710970c8be5">'A war on the old'</h2>Student loans can be burdensome for any generation, but the risks increase for older borrowers who are retired or nearing retirement and have limited sources of income. According to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, Gen Xers and boomers have the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-retirement-crisis-risk-social-security-savings-relief-2024-6">highest median student-loan balance</a>, and with the risk of losing full Social Security benefits in just over a decade, the need for relief grows more prevalent."It seems like a war on the old and the poor," Sue said. "I'm already figuring out what my life would be minus the full Social Security."The Education Department is continuing to fight for the SAVE plan in court, and it's also working toward implementation of its broader student-loan forgiveness plan that's expected to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-announces-new-student-loan-forgiveness-plan-who-qualifies-relief-2024-4">benefit over 30 million borrowers</a>. However, continued opposition to the administration's relief efforts means that any forthcoming relief will likely end up in court, leaving borrowers in limbo."You should expect more on student debt relief," White House chief of staff Jeff Zients <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-expect-more-debt-cancellation-zients-biden-relief-2024-8">told Axios</a>. "You should expect more on junk fees and anything we can do to make Americans' lives more affordable."BI has previously spoken to some other borrowers concerned about the fate of their student-loan payments. For example, Alan Pedrick, 41, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-blocked-millennial-worried-cheaper-student-loan-payments-relief-2024-7">received $0 payments through SAVE</a>, and he's not confident he can afford anything higher than that should the plan be blocked."I'm going to have to rebudget all over again," Pedrick said. It's kind of depressing, really."While Sue, like millions of other borrowers, is still waiting to find out whether she can continue to benefit from lower monthly payments, she hasn't lost all hope, given that many others are banking on the same relief."There are so many people in this position that I'm hoping that they win some recognition," Sue said. The shares were locked in a 20% lower circuit on Thursday after hitting an all-time high of ₹214 per share during the early trading hours — clocking nearly 265% gains to issue price since December 14. The record rally since its listing this week has pushed its market cap beyond ₹6,844 crore, surpassing its rival Westlife Development (McDonald’s operator in India), which has a market cap of ₹6,790 crore. Just as the sharp rally in the last three days was surprising, the fall today has come as a shock for many small investors who were lured by the record surge in the stock. Here’s an explainer on what happened in the market: What is the upper and lower circuit? Circuits are the limits set by the stock-exchanges for a stock to cap its movement in extreme cases — either a rally upwards or a massive fall downwards. This protects investors’ wealth and ensures an unwanted surprise moment. A stock hits an <keyword id="96007" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="upper-circuit">upper circuit</keyword> when there are only buyers and no sellers. The upper circuit for a stock is the maximum price it is allowed to move up to. Once that limit is breached, trading is not allowed. This does not apply for stocks that are also traded in the futures and options segment. For most stocks the circuit is set at 20%. This limit can be revised by the exchanges. In the case of Burger King, the limit was set at 20%, and after surging to ₹214 during the morning trade, the stock was locked in an upper circuit. However, when the exchanges allowed trading to restart in the afternoon session, the stock fell almost 20% and was locked again, this time in a lower circuit at 2:10 pm. A lower circuit is the minimum price to which a stock can fall to in a single trading day. When a stock hits the lower circuit it means that there are only sellers and not buyers at that point. What has been the reason behind the rally? With a whopping subscription of 157 times, Burger King India was one of the most popular IPO this year. Most brokerages have recommended a ‘subscribe’ due to its attractive valuations, growing market share and future outlook. With COVID-19 vaccines making progress, restaurants have started opening up again, boosting the sentiment. The shares of Burger King India were locked in a 20% upper circuit for three days in a row, nearly taking its gains to 265% over the issue price, just four days after listing. The reason behind the tumble today However, after three days of a rip-roaring rally, some investors (may be even just one) may have decided to take some profit home. Business Insider reached out to market watchers for insight on what may have played out but they refused to share any comment on record. We have learnt that when the market reopened trades in Burger King stock at 2 pm, 15 million shares were dumped at once in the market and there were not enough buyers for that kind of volume. And that led to the sharp fall where the shares breached the lower circuit. What next? ⁠— ‘More upside ahead — stay invested’ According to analysts, there is ample scope for investors in Burger King, and they see room for more upside over the next few months. Keshav Lahoti Associate Equity Analyst, Angel Broking post the listing of the IPO said, “Such listing was in-line with our expectation as the company issue was priced at a significant discount compared to listed peers such as Jubilant FoodWorks (Domino’s Pizza) and Westlife Development (McDonald). Short term investors can book profit. We advise long term investors to stay invested in the company as there is ample scope available for the company to increase its business in India.” IIFL Securities, <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/business-economy/markets/article/more-steam-left-in-burger-king-after-130-gain-on-listing-day-analyst/694692">Sanjiv Bhasin believes </a>that the stock can still rise 30-40% more in the next few months. However, he also recommends caution, given the frothiness in the broader market. “There is a lot of left out feeling, and there is a lot of froth in small-caps now. The stock climbed 5 per cent to Rs 384.50 -- its upper circuit limit as well as 52-week high -- on the <keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword> after beginning the trade on a positive note. The company's market capitalisation climbed Rs 117.99 crore to Rs 2,478.92 crore on the BSE. On the NSE, it jumped 4.99 per cent to Rs 388.20 -- its upper circuit limit as also the one-year peak. Three Adani group firms - Vishvapradhan Commercial Pvt Ltd (VCPL) along with AMG Media Networks and Adani Enterprises Ltd - have come out with a public announcement for the offer under the Sebi norms. The open offer to acquire an additional 26 per cent or 1.67 crore equity shares in NDTV is worth nearly Rs 493 crore. The offer price is Rs 294 per share, 19.71 per cent lower than the closing price on Tuesday. NDTV's share price, which has risen more than 300 per cent so far this year, closed at Rs 366.20 apiece on BSE on Tuesday. If the open offer is successful, the Adani group will have more than 55 per cent stake in NDTV. As the Adani group looks to boost media investments as part of an ambitious expansion plan, a group firm first acquired a company that in the past was linked to rival billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>. The particular company had loaned Rs 250 crore to NDTV in 2008-09 and the Adani group firm now exercised the option to convert that debt into 29.18 per cent stake in the news channel company. Subsequently, it has launched an open offer for another 26 per cent stake, the group said in a statement on Tuesday. "AMVL's wholly-owned subsidiary VCPL holds warrants of RRPR Holding Pvt Ltd (RRPR) entitling it to convert them into a 99.9 per cent stake in RRPR. VCPL has exercised warrants to acquire 99.5 per cent in RRPR," it said. Such acquisition will result in VCPL acquiring control of RRPR. "RRPR is a promoter group company of NDTV and holds a 29.18 per cent stake in NDTV," the statement said. On Tuesday, NDTV said the exercise of the right by VCPL was executed without any input of the company or its founders. In an internal communication to its employees on Tuesday, NDTV said, "the developments of today are entirely unexpected for NDTV, and for Radhika and Prannoy". "We are in the process of evaluating the next steps, many of which involve regulatory and legal processes," it added. The bid for NDTV will be the Adani group's most high-profile bet in the media sector where Ambani already has a sizeable presence through Network18, which runs a bouquet of channels, including news channel CNN-News18 and business channel CNBC-TV18. Last year, Adani Media Ventures Ltd (AMVL), the media arm under the group's flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd, had acquired the digital business news platform Quintillion Business Media Pvt Ltd (QBM).
