<p>Caught in the big commodity downdraft is <keyword id="6359072" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil">oil</keyword>, as prices of West Texas Intermediate crude fall below $90.</p>
<p>That's notable, but what's also interesting is the big picture.</p>
<p>If you look at a chart going back several years, you can see that there are recurring peaks and troughs, but that each peak is a bit lower than the one before.</p>
<p>And this year the peak really fizzled out fast.</p>
<p>More evidence of a big secular trend for oil (lower demand, higher supply) and all commodities (higher supply, slower global growth, and a speculative unwind).</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/license/57349039">Daniel Berehulak/Getty Images</a></span></p><p class="caption">Get ready for the drop...</p></div><p></p></div></div>The race to the bottom with predictions of how low the pound can go continues.</p><p>Sterling is already hovering <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/fx-markets-july-5-2016-7">close to 31-year-lows against the dollar</a> in the wake of the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>'s shock vote to leave the European Union, but on Thursday Deutsche Bank predicted the currency will fall much lower.</p><p>The investment bank forecasts that the pound will reach $1.15 against the dollar by the end of the year, against the current exchange rate of just shy of $1.30, and it reckons a euro will buy you 90p, up from its current rate of 85p.</p><p>The forecast follows an equally pessimistic call from Goldman Sachs earlier in the week, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-pound-crash-below-130-2016-7">which said the pound could hit $1.20 soon.</a></p><p>Deutsche Bank's George Saravelos says his forecasts "look aggressive", but says: "Our assumption is that the UK is undergoing an unparalleled negative "terms of trade" shock, which requires GBP to reach historical (under)valuation extremes. As the charts below show, there is much more to go before GBP is considered excessively "cheap"."</p><p>Here are the charts: <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Deutsche Bank</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>PPP, the light blue line, stands for purchasing power parity, "which measures the exchange rate that equates the price of a "big mac" between two countries." In other words, whether real prices of goods differ between nations.</p><p>The Bank of England and many Leave campaigners have made the case that the economic impact of leaving the European Union could partially be offset by the devaluing of the pound, which would make British goods and services cheaper to export.</p><p>But Deutsche Bank is saying the pound needs to go even lower for this to be true. The light blue line more or less matches up with the current exchange rate, but Saravelos' argument is they need to deviate to encourage trade. Basically, British made goods need to get a lot cheaper before they become attractive to overseas buyers.</p><p>Aside from exports, Deutsche Bank also looks at where the pound would need to get to in order to stimulate inward investment - foreign buyers snapping up UK houses and companies. These targets are even more aggressive.</p><p>Saravelos says:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"A final metric is to look at the underlying value of assets. What is the level of the exchange rate that would make UK assets "cheap" again and thus keep attracting the capital inflows that are needed to finance the current account deficit? Here we look at the London housing market priced in both dollars and euros as a proxy for "international UK assets" and assume "cheap" would be a return of house prices back to the currency-adjusted levels seen in 2005. This <strong>requires a move up to 1.20 in EUR/GBP and down to down to 90cents in GBP/USD</strong>. Part of this can (and will) be offset by a drop in sterling house prices but even if we assume a 20% drop in house prices that would still require a sterling move close to our forecasts."</p><p>In this formulation, both the euro and the dollar would be worth more than the pound for the first time ever. The closest the euro got to parity with sterling was in 2008 during the financial crisis when it hit 1.02271. DEUTSCHE BANK: The pound is going lower - much lower

These all amounted to a less than 1% decline.</p><p>It's already a busy news week. Here are some of the major stories that have crossed:</p><ul><li>Alcoa is splitting itself into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/alcoa-to-separate-into-two-companies-2015-9">two public companies</a>: The Upstream Co. that will primarily do mining and exploration, and Value-Add Co. that will turn raw material into industrial products.</li><li>Whole Foods is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whole-foods-cutting-jobs-2015-9">cutting 1,500 jobs</a> (or 1.6% of its workforce) as part of an ongoing restructuring that includes reducing its grocery prices. </li><li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/glencore-shares-are-getting-obliterated-again-2015-9">Glencore shares</a> are getting wrecked. The mining giant's stock fell 30% in London after analysts at Investec wrote that persistent, weak commodity prices could wipe out all of the company's equity value.</li></ul><p>Commodities are under pressure. Gold fell more than 1%, or $15.80 an ounce to around $1,129.80, a one-week low. Silver was down more than 3%, or $0.5 an ounce, near $14.60. West Texas Intermediate crude futures in New York dropped below $45, down more than 2% near $44.59.</p><p>In economic data, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/personal-income-and-outlays-august-2015-9">personal income</a> rose 0.3% in August, more than expected, while personal spending rose 0.4%, less than forecast.</p><p>Pending home sales and the Dallas Fed's manufacturing survey are due at 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. ET respectively. </p><p>Monday's trading session starts after two back-to-back weeks of stock market declines, and uncertainty is still the big theme.</p><p>There could be another government shutdown if Congress does not agree on a fiscal 2016 budget by September 30, although experts say the odds are quite low. And, the S&amp;P 500 rallied during the shutdown of 2013.</p><p>We're closing in on Q3 earnings season. Traders are worried about a third straight quarter of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/revenue-recession-2015-9">S&amp;P 500 revenue declines</a>. Futures are lower

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images / Tim Boyle</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Stocks opened lower on Monday following a surge in the previous session, and crude oil headed towards new lows.</p><p>Near 9:34 a.m. ET, the Dow was down 66 points, the S&amp;P 500 was down 8 points, and the Nasdaq was down 11 points.</p><p>The indexes closed out last week with small gains, supported by a surge in stocks on Friday after the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/november-jobs-report-december-4-2015-12">November jobs report</a> came in better than expected. The US economy added 211,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5%, a seven-year low.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/crude-oil-price-december-7-2015-12">crude oil</a> was still falling on Monday morning, following OPEC's indecision on Friday on a production quota, and the lifting of its output to 31.5 million barrels per day.</p><p>Brent crude collapsed 2% to a six-year low of about $41.78 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures in New York fell about 3% to as low as $38.50, less than $1 from the year-to-date low of $37.75.</p><p>The energy sector was the biggest loser on the S&amp;P 500 in early trading. Chevron was down 3%, the most among components of the Dow Industrial Average.</p><p>The economic data calendar is light today and throughout this week. The Fed's Labor Market Conditions Index is due at 10:00 a.m. ET, and consumer credit data at 3:00 p.m. </p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/keurig-green-mountain-being-acquired-by-jab-group-2015-12">Keurig Green Mountain</a> shares popped 74% on news that the company is going private, and will be acquired by JAB Group for $92 per share. Stocks are lower

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange</p></div><p></p></div></div>Stocks are lower for a second day.</p><p>Near the open, at 9:47 a.m. ET, the Dow was off 31 points, the S&amp;P 500 was down 3 points, and the Nasdaq was down 28 points - all by less than 1%.</p><p>Stepping back, it's the biggest two-day loss for stocks in at least six weeks. The indexes on Friday recorded the longest streak of weekly gains this year after a sixth straight week in the green. </p><p>Apple shares were lower by about 2.5% in early trading, weighing down the Dow. Credit Suisse analysts wrote in a client note the company had <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-slashing-iphone-orders-due-to-weak-demand-says-credit-suisse-2015-11">cut orders</a> for hardware components by up to 10% because of weak iPhone 6S demand. </p><p>Valeant shares fell less than 1% near the open, as the company held a second <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/valeants-second-conference-call-2015-11">conference call</a> amid the controversy about its relationship with specialty pharma Philidor. Valeant said Philidor will shut down next January; we have all the other details from that call <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/valeants-second-conference-call-2015-11">here</a>.</p><p>In economic data, import prices fell 0.5% in October, more than expected, as the strong dollar continued to dampen prices and inflation. </p><p>The latest <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nfib-small-businesses-should-be-raising-wages-2015-11">survey data</a> from the NFIB showed that 21% of firms reported an increase in compensation last month, down from September, but maintaining the upward trend of higher-wage reports. </p><p>And over in China, inflation fell to a five-month low in October. <p>Stock futures are skewed lower but virtually flat ahead of the market open on Monday.</p><p>Near 8:20 a.m. ET, Dow futures were down 8 points, S&amp;P 500 futures were down 1 point, and Nasdaq futures were down 5 points.</p><p>Last week, stocks rallied for a third straight period, as the S&amp;P 500 bounced back to positive territory for the year. It's now up a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sp-500-flat-year-despite-volatility-2015-10">whopping 0.8%.</a></p><p>It's the core week of third-quarter earnings, with about 160 companies including Apple (on Tuesday) scheduled. Other key companies reporting including Pfizer, BP, and Alibaba.</p><p>New home sales numbers are scheduled to cross at 10:00 a.m. ET. Later this week, we'll get data on home prices, durable goods, and the advance estimate of third-quarter GDP. The Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting starts tomorrow, and the FOMC will release its interest-rate decision on Wednesday. <p>After touching record highs yesterday, US futures are a lower in overnight action.</p>
<p>European stocks are down as well. Germany is off 0.4%. Italy is down 0.3%. France is off 0.5%.</p>
<p>French Business Confidence <a href="https://twitter.com/trader1806/status/438218167555731456">came out and slightly missed expectations</a>.</p>
<p>The big loser of the day is China, as the Shanghai Composite shed another 2%, and the Chinese Yuan continued to reverse from its traditional course of only going higher.</p>
<p>Today in the US we get the Case-Shiller housing market index.</p>

Markets Are Lower

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Investing.com</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Stock futures are turning lower on Tuesday morning ahead of the market open in New York.</p><p>Near 8:53 a.m. ET, Dow futures were down 67 points, S&amp;P 500 futures were down 5 points, and Nasdaq futures were down 9 points - all by less than 0.4%. </p><p>Stocks finished <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/closing-bell-march-28-2016-3">little changed</a> on Monday.</p><p>The highlight today is Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen's speech on monetary policy and the economy. It will be the first time we hear from her since the press conference after the policy meeting two weeks ago.</p><p>At least four other regional Fed presidents have spoken since the meeting, and have somewhat endorsed the FOMC's plan to raise rates twice this year.  </p><p>"After the Yellen speech we expect the market to remain very reluctant to price in an April hike," Deutsche Bank's Alan Ruskin wrote in a client note. "The initial reaction will be restrained in part because participants will wish to avoid getting whipsawed by key data at the end of the week [like the job's report]."</p><p>Economic data out today include <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spcase-shiller-home-price-index-january-2016-3">S&amp;P/Case-Shiller's home price index</a> for January at 9 a.m. ET, and the Conference Board's consumer confidence index at 10 a.m. </p><p>The American Petroleum Institute's crude oil inventory numbers will cross after the closing bell. West Texas Intermediate crude futures in New York fell further below $40 per barrel, down 2% to as low as $38.53 in early trading. </p><p>Lennar reported <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lennar-earnings-q1-2016-2016-3">first-quarter earnings</a> before the market open, beating analysts' expectations for earnings. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Investing.com</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Stock futures were in the red ahead of the start of the trading session on Thursday.</p><p>Near 7:40 a.m. ET, Dow futures were down 49 points, S&amp;P 500 futures were down 6 points, and Nasdaq futures were down 18 points - all by less than 0.5%. </p><p>Caterpillar shares were down 3% after the machinery giant put out a bearish first-quarter outlook. </p><p>After the Fed decided to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/federal-reserve-fomc-statement-march-16-2016-3">hold rates steady</a> and lower its forecast for rate hikes this year on Wednesday, stocks spiked. They closed higher, with the Dow gaining 74 points and the S&amp;P 500 up 0.5%. </p><p>Some of the commentary out of Wall Street this morning is noting that the Fed was more dovish than expected. Besides the expected rate hold, the Fed lowered its expectations for inflation and growth. </p><p>Here's Bank of America Merrill Lynch's takeaway, from a note Wednesday (emphasis ours):</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) not only did not hike today as widely expected, but it put a more dovish spin on its communications: modest downward revisions to near-term forecasts, retaining language about global and financial risks, continuing to monitor inflation and, most notably, dropping the likely number of rate hikes this year down to just two, from four, in the December Summary of Economic Projections (SEP).</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;"><strong>This dovish tilt is a bit of a surprise to us, given how the data - particularly on inflation - have shown signs of improvement of late.</strong> An April hike seems rather unlikely after today's meeting, but we are comfortable with our expectation for the next hike in June, followed by December this year.</p><p>And so the Fed's meeting could stay top of investors' minds in today's trading session, as well as a couple of key economic data points.</p><p>At 8:30 a.m. ET, we'll get weekly initial jobless claims and the Philly Fed's business outlook. Gold fell 0.42%, or $5 an ounce to as low as $1,212.90 in early trading. It could end up with the worst week in four months. </p><p>Crude oil also continued to fall. On Wednesday, the Energy Information Administration reported a build in inventories by 9.4 million barrels, which was more than expected. </p><p>On the data calendar today, initial jobless claims and durable goods orders cross at 8:30 a.m. ET. Crude oil prices were also lower, with West Texas Intermediate crude futures in New York slipping 3% to as low as $37.25 per barrel. </p><p>Southwestern Energy and Chesapeake were the two biggest decliners on the S&amp;P 500, both falling by about 5%.</p><p>Ahead of the market open, we got some notable M&amp;A news. </p><p>Starwood Hotels announced that it received an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-starwood-hotels-gets-unsolicited-buyout-proposal-2016-3">unsolicited buyout offer</a> from a consortium led by China's Anbang Insurance Group. The offer seeks to derail Starwood's merger with Marriott that would create the world's largest hotel group.</p><p>Starwood shares rose as much as 7% in early trading, the biggest on the S&amp;P 500. </p><p>And, Apollo Global Management announced it was acquiring The Fresh Market for $1.36 billion.</p><p>There's no economic data due today, but this week will bring retail sales numbers, the consumer price index, and the Fed's statement. <p>The German election (which saw Merkel sweep back to victory) proved to be a non-event market wise.</p>
