Added to that, the Indian Central Bank RBI announced an unseasonal interest rate cut and injected ₹3.74 lakh crore via multiple announcements on Friday (March 27). <br /><br />However, this wasn’t unprecedented. The mood in the rest of Asia today(March 30) was quite cautious as well. The Chinese exchange, Shanghai Composite, was down by 1.54%, the Japanese Nikkei was down by 3.23%, and the Hong Kong-based Hang Seng was down by 1.49%. The Singapore exchange SGX Nifty also opened in red and fell by 1.77% in minutes of trading. <br /><br />On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 915.39 points, or 4.06%, to 21,636.78. The S&amp;P 500 decreased 88.60 points, or 3.37%, to 2,541.47. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 295.16 points, or 3.79%, to 7,502.38. <br /><br />Ten of the 11 primary S&amp;P 500 sectors traded lower, with energy down 6.93%, becoming the worst-performing group. month for markets as investors head off on vacation and trading volume plunges, and 2023 proved no exception.</p><p>Stocks tumbled before paring back some of their losses, with Wall Street still trying to figure out how close the Federal Reserve is to ending its long campaign of interest rate rises.</p><p>There were still some sources of optimism amid the gloom, though, as the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/us-dollar-index">US dollar</a> snapped a two-month losing streak and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nvda-stock">Nvidia</a>'s share price reached a record high following a stellar second-quarter earnings report.</p><p>Here are August's biggest winners and losers.</p><h2><strong>Loser: Stocks</strong></h2><p>Wall Street's stellar 2023 ground to a halt last month, with the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/dow_jones">Dow Jones Industrial Average</a> both slipping, although the tech-heavy <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/nasdaq_composite">Nasdaq Composite</a> managed to eke out another month of gains.</p><p>The indices' losses were driven by the Federal Reserve after chair Jerome Powell struck a hawkish tone at Jackson Hole, and <a rise of AI has driven up demand for its chips.</p><p>The semiconductor giant, which produces about 95% of the graphics processing units (GPUs) capable of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-trillion-dollar-valuation-ai-jensen-huang-apple-amazon-microsoft-2023-5">powering programs like ChatGPT</a>, is now up a staggering 240% this year, breaking into the trillion-dollar club and solidifying itself as a member of the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tech-stocks-tesla-nvidia-apple-microsoft-amazon-the-magnificent-seven-2023-6">"magnificent seven" mega-cap tech stocks</a>.</p><div type="image" was an end in sight for its tightening campaign, which diminishes the appeal of the currency to foreign investors seeking higher yields.</p><p>However, the greenback did manage to claw back some of its losses in August on new signs of Fed hawkishness, with the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/us-dollar-index">US Dollar Index</a> – which tracks the buck's value against six rival currencies, including the euro and Japanese yen – jumping 2% over the course of the month.</p><h2><strong>Loser: China</strong></h2><p>It was another bad month for the world's second-largest economy, which is grappling with deflation, weaker-than-expected growth, and a <a <p>Stocks <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sp-500-consumer-discretionary-energy-sector-2015-12">didn't go nowhere</a> in 2015. Many stocks most certainly went somewhere.</p><p>Here's a snapshot of the S&amp;P 500's biggest winners and losers in 2015.</p><p>First the winners: Leading the way are Netflix and Amazon, two of the so-call <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tom-lee-9-stocks-are-next-years-fangs-2015-12">"FANG" stocks</a>. Here are the S&P 500's 10 biggest winners and 10 biggest losers of 2015

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bespoke Investment Group looked at 25 years of the biggest annual winners and losers on the <keyword id="11907242" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dow-jones-industrial-average" source="Orion">Dow Jones Industrial Average</keyword>. </li><li>The result showed the Dow's worst losers have roughly doubled the performance of the top winners in the following year. </li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/dis-stock">Walt Disney</a> ended 2021 as the worst-performing stock on the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/dow_jones">Dow Jones Industrial Average</a>, but if history holds sway, the index's biggest laggard has a strong shot of swinging to produce gains for investors in 2022. </p><p>Disney stock last year dropped by 14.5%, weighed in part by weak fiscal fourth-quarter results and a slowdown in the growth of subscribers to Disney+ streaming service. On the other end, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/msft-stock">Microsoft's</a> 51% surge leaves it as the best performer among blue chips in 2021. </p><p>Bespoke Investment Group looked at the Dow's biggest losers and winners over the past 25 years to determine if an investor would be better off riding the momentum and buying the index's top winner each year or if the better bet was to take a contrarian approach and buy the largest decliner. </p><p>Bespoke found the Dow's worst decliner had an average percentage gain in the next year of 12.1% and a median gain of 15.8%, with positive returns 58% of the time, according to a Tuesday note. </p><p>Meanwhile, the Dow's biggest winner each year averaged only a gain of 6.71% in the following year with positive returns 45.8% of the time. "On a median basis, the next-year performance for the Dow's biggest winner is actually negative at -3.96%. Not very good!" the independent investment firm said. </p><p>While the 25-year performance shows the Dow's biggest losers roughly doubled the performance of the biggest winners in the following year, Bespoke said it was important to note that the trend has reversed more recently. </p><p>From 1997 to 2006, the worst Dow loser posted positive returns in the following year eight out of 10 times for an average gain of 32%. However, over the last eight years, the firm found the laggard has been positive three times in the following year and the average next-year performance has been -6.2%.</p><p>Beginning in 2016, when heavy-equipment maker <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cat-stock">Caterpillar</a> was the biggest winner, the top Dow stock has been up every time in the following year for an average gain of 42%. Before 2016, the lead stock had only logged advances in the following year six out of 19 times. </p><p>"This brings us back to Microsoft and Disney," Bespoke said. "Based on recent history, riding the momentum with MSFT would be the way to go, but going back 25 years, it's Disney."</p>

<p>First of all, Europe (which has seen some of the strongest <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword> in the world) is on the decline. Italian stocks are off 0.75%. Germany is down 0.67%. And France is off 0.56%.</p>
<p>The big loser in world markets is India, which is off over 2%, which is its second huge down day in a row.</p>
<p>On Friday, the market fell 4%, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/india-stock-market-dives-2013-8">with bank stocks particularly hard hit</a>.</p>
<p>The rupee continues to act incredibly weak.</p>
<p>Also a big notable emerging markets loser: Indonedian stocks fell 4% today.</p>
<p>This is probably going to be a very quiet week. For the final two weeks of August, trading volumes tend to be very light, and the calendar of upcoming events is also limited.</p>

India Is Getting Clobbered Again

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The striking of US port workers on the East and Gulf coast could impact certain stocks.</li><li>Port workers are demanding a 61.5% raise and oppose the adoption of automation in new contract negotiations.</li></ul><p>The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/consumer-products-most-likely-to-be-impacted-by-port-strike-2024-9">striking of US port workers across the East and Gulf coast</a> on Tuesday is set to have big ramifications for the stock market if negotiations are drawn out.</p><p>Workers of the International Longshoremen's Association saw their contract expire on Monday.</p><p>The workers are asking for a 61.5% pay raise over six years and strong language against adopting automation and AI technologies in their new contract.</p><p>According to Stifel analyst Bruce Chan, the ramifications of the port strike won't be sizable unless the strike is drawn out for more than two weeks.</p><p>"The longer this goes, the more the impact scales, and really it starts to scale exponentially," Chan told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday.</p><p>That could lead to a rebound in inflation for consumer goods, a shortage of certain consumable products, and ultimately job layoffs in certain industries, according to Chan.</p><p>"Where we'd probably be most worried is for critical process inventories. Unavailability there could cause shuttering of production plants, potentially furloughs and layoffs," Chan said.</p><p>Detailed below are the biggest winners and losers of the situation, along with other companies that will be impacted to a lesser degree.</p><h2 id="bb9e7a39-dfd3-42d3-aec4-ad100d960810">Biggest winners</h2><p>The international air cargo business of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ups-stock">UPS</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fdx-stock">FedEx</a> is the clear winner of the ILA port strike, as high-value goods will be shifted to airfreight to avoid the backed-up ports.</p><p>"Air cargo essentially is the only clear beneficiary we can see in this situation. It's essentially the only way to move products in country and bypass the ports," Chan explained, adding that there isn't much capacity to divert ships to ports on the West Coast or in Canada.</p><p>He added: "There really are not a whole lot of options in terms of a plan B here other than air cargo," Chan said.</p><p>Investors are already catching on to this dynamic, with shares of UPS and FedEx both rising 6% in the past week.</p><p>"We think the most direct beneficiary of a strike situation would likely be international airfreight capacity providers like FedEx and UPS, which have significant operating leverage to Express operations," Chan said in a note over the weekend.</p><h2 id="b875b888-0b77-451e-9d75-2651d2e6b270">Other winners</h2><p>As companies seek alternative routes to transport their goods, logistic networks can see an increase in volumes.</p><p>Shares of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/chrw-stock">C.H. Robinson Worldwide</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/expd-stock">Expeditors International of Washington</a> have seen gains of 4% and 5% in the past week, respectively, as investors anticipate increased business due to the port strike.</p><h2 id="9bc29b04-9899-4dbb-9d3f-0d0cf8831653">Biggest losers</h2><p>The biggest losers, so far, appear to be shipping container companies that are directly exposed to the port strike.</p><p>Shares of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/zim-stock">ZIM Integrated Shipping Services</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cmre-stock">Costamare</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gsl-stock">Global Ship Lease</a> dropped 7%, 2%, and 2% on Tuesday, respectively.</p><p>Ultimately, Chan sees the port strike lasting about two weeks, with a lot of it hinging on how the Biden administration responds.</p><p>"I think a lot is going to depend obviously on the political situation and the willingness of the Biden administration to intervene here, but our base case is about two weeks," Chan told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday.</p><p>Biden, who is known to be very pro-union, has resisted calls to enact the Taft-Hartley Act, which would force port employees back to work while the negotiate a contract.</p><p>"There's collective bargaining, and I don't believe in Taft-Hartley," Biden said on Monday.</p><h2 id="94183ca9-b0db-438c-8537-399af0c79994">Other losers</h2><p>A lot of goods movers concentrated on the east coast could see decreased volumes as goods stop moving into the port.</p><p>That means railroads and trucking companies with significant exposure to the east coast could take a hit.</p><p>"With respect to the rails, there are clearly some near-term headwinds to both East Coast rails CSX and NSC," Chan said, adding that West Coast railroad operators are unlikely to see a big benefit.</p><p>"We see this as a small headwind with no real winners among the rails," Chan said.</p><p>Other potential losers, if the strike is drawn out for an extended period of time, are retailers like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/wmt-stock">Walmart</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cost-stock">Costco</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tgt-stock">Target</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/hd-stock">Home Depot</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/low-stock">Lowe's</a>, as they may struggle to replenish their shelves with certain goods.</p>

The biggest stock market winners and losers of the US port strike

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Andrew Burton/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>The energy sector's underperformance even with a weaker dollar is "surprising," <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/c-stock">Citi's</a> Tobias Levkovich says. </strong></li><li><strong>Strategists at <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ms-stock">Morgan Stanley</a> echoed this point, arguing energy stocks sold off too much after the recent correction. </strong></li><li><strong>Energy stocks are down 4.5% this year, lagging the S&amp;P 500's 3.7% gain. </strong></li></ul><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/energy">energy sector</a> is one of the worst performers in the stock market this year.</p><p>Strategists at Morgan Stanley and Citi find this puzzling, and recommend investors change their tone.</p><p>Part of what's puzzling is a breakdown of the longstanding relationship between oil-related stocks and the US dollar, the strategists said. Because oil prices are denominated in dollars, a weaker USD makes it easier for holders of other currencies to buy oil, and that demand improves the outlook for oil companies. In fact, a weaker dollar and supply controls are among the main reasons why <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price?type=wti">oil prices</a> jumped 12% last year. </p><p>"The underperformance of the energy sector is a bit surprising given dollar weakness," Tobias Levkovich, the chief US equity strategist at Citi, said in a note on Friday.</p><p>"In the past, a drop in the greenback meant that oil-related stock prices outpaced the S&amp;P 500 and that pattern has not been in place of late." <span></span><span></span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Citi" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5a945407aae60577088b45aa-960/screen shot 2018-02-26 at 11323 pm.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Citi</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Citi has an overweight rating on the energy sector. Strategists at Morgan Stanley, led by Elizabeth Volynsky, also find the sector attractive. In a note on Monday, they said energy stocks "sold off too much" after the recent correction.</p><p>Their US stock picks include <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/clr-stock">Continental Resources</a> and <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fang-stock">Diamondback Energy</a>. </p><p>"Energy equities have a positive and statistically significant beta [or price sensitivity] to both oil and the S&amp;P 500, and we see upside for both," Volynsky said. </p><p>It's not only the dollar-oil relationship that's broken down, Levkovich said. For nearly three decades, energy capital investment as a share of gross domestic product has been aligned with the stocks' performance - but not anymore.</p><p>"It seems implausible that such a differential can persist, generating another reason to take advantage of recent underperformance to add to positions," Levkovich said.  </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Citi" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5a9453f2aae60531038b45ff-960/screen shot 2018-02-26 at 13606 pm.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Citi</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Even after accounting for investors' new, big concern - rising interest rates - energy stocks should theoretically be spared. Levkovich noted oil and gas companies are not as sensitive to changes in the <a href="http://www.investing.com/rates-bonds/u.s.-10-year-bond-yield">10-year yield</a>. In fact, crude oil should benefit from this stronger part of the economic cycle that's stoking concerns about inflation and higher interest rates. </p><p>What makes energy's underperformance even more puzzling is that Citi clients said they favored energy stocks in a mid-December survey, but the market still shows otherwise. </p><p>"We suspect investors may need to be convinced via even higher oil prices to step up," Levkovich said. That's about the same amount as Toyota's entire market capitalization - and it's equivalent to the dollar value of the entire gross domestic product of Algeria. <br /><br />In terms of value lost, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amzn-stock">Amazon</a> was the big loser of the group. Its shares fell 6% on Wednesday, vaporizing $56 billion of its market capitalization. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">Apple</a> was next; it lost nearly $51 billion on a 4.6% fall - an amount $6 billion greater than the entire value of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/gm-stock">General Motors</a>.</p><p>But <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nflx-stock">Netflix</a> was the biggest loser on a percentage basis. The S&amp;P 500 fell 3.3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 3.2%, and and the tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 4.1%.
