<keyword id="31412" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Michael-Clarke">Michael Clarke</keyword> gave a heartfelt tribute to his little brother Phillips Hughes, and this is the most moving eulogy we have heard in ages. He would definitely be calling me a sook right now, that’s for sure. I am deeply honoured to have been asked by Phillips’s family to speak tonight. I am humbled to be in the presence of Hughes family, his friends, and his community. He was so proud of Macksville and it's easy to see why today. 
 
Taken from the game, his family and loved ones at the age of just 25, he left a mark on our game that leaves no embellishment. 
I don't know about you but I keep looking for him. I know it's crazy, but I expect any minute to take a call from him or to see his face pop around the corner. 
 
Is this what we call the spirit? If so, then his spirit is still with me and I hope it never leaves. 
 
I walked to the middle of the SCG on Thursday night, those same blades of grass beneath my feet, where he and I and so many of his mates here today have built partnerships, taken chances and lived out the dreams we painted in our heads as boys. 
 
The same stands where the crowds rose to their feet to cheer him on, and that same fence he sent the ball to time and time again. 
 
And it's now forever, the place where he fell. I stood at the wicket and knelt down to touch the grass and I swear he was with me, picking me up off my feet to check if I was OK, telling me we just needed to dig in, and get through to tea. Telling me off for that loose shot I'd played, chatting about what movie we might watch that night, and then passing on a useless fact about cows. 
 
I could see him swagger back to the other end, grin at the bowler, then call me through for a run with such a booming voice a bloke in the car park could hear it. 
 
The heart of a man who lived his life for this wonderful game we play, and whose soul enriched not just our sport but all of our lives. 
Is this what indigenous Australians believe about a person's spirit being connected to the land upon which they walk? If so, I know they're right about the SCG. 
 
His spirit has touched it, and it will forever be a sacred ground for me. I can feel his presence there, and I can see how he's touched so many people around the world. 
 
The tributes to him from cricket lovers have kept me going. The photos, the words, the prayers, and the sense of communion in this loss from people across the globe have shown me his spirit is in action. It has sustained me and overwhelmed me in equal measure, and the love of my band of Baggy Green and Gold brothers and sisters have held me upright when I thought I could not proceed. 
 
His spirit has brought us closer together, something I know must be him at work because it's so consistent with how he played and lived. He always wanted to bring people together, and he always wanted to celebrate his love for the game and its people. 
 
Is this what we call the spirit of cricket? From the little girl in Karachi holding a candle-light tribute, to masters of the game like Tendulkar, Warne and Lara, showing their grief to the world, the spirit of cricket binds us all together. 
 
We feel it in the thrill of a coverdrive, or the taking of a screamer in gully, whether by a 12-year-old boy in Worcester or by Brendan McCullum in Dubai. It's in the brilliant 105 wicket haul, just as significant to the players in a western suburbs club game, as it is in a Test match. 
 
The bonds that lead to cricketers from around the world putting their bats out, that saw people who didn't even know Phillip leave flowers at the gates of Lords, and that brought every cricketing nation on earth to make its own heartfelt tribute. The bonds that saw players, old and new, rush to his bedside, from wherever they heard the news, to say their prayers and farewells. 
 
This is what makes our game the greatest game in the world. 
 
Phillip's spirit, which is now part of our game forever, will act as a custodian of the sport we all love. We must listen to it, we must cherish it, we must learn from it, we must dig in ... we must dig in, and get through to tea. And we must play on. 
 
So rest in peace my little brother. I'll see you out in the middle.

Australia has a long and proud history of sporting <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword>. Here are seven success stories that have changed sport forever, particularly how we watch along at home…

<h2>1. RaceCam (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=motorsport">Motor Racing</a>)</h2>
It’s 1979. You’re at home watching ATN-7’s (now Channel 7) coverage of the Hardie-Ferodo 1000 from Mount Panorama, Bathurst. A first-person perspective puts you inside Peter Williamson’s Toyota Celica, complete with the driver’s audio commentary. This isn’t retrieved footage from an onboard camera after an event — or a cameraman hunched on the back seat for a limited period. This is live; for the first time.
Thanks to ATN-7 engineers Geoff Healy and John Porter, and reportedly inspired by Geoff’s son placing a camera on the dashboard during a trip to school. Microwave radio transmitters and helicopter relays made the idea a reality. It wasn’t until several years later that RaceCam made its way to the US. Yet today we have miniaturised remote control cameras that can tilt and zoom, be attached to bumpers and roofs and bring viewers closer to the action than ever before. Today, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/formula-one">Formula One</a> even mandates that cameras must be mounted to a car.

<h2>2. Stump-Cam (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=cricket+australia">Cricket</a>)</h2>
Hot on the heels of RaceCam, TCN Channel 9 introduced Stump-cam in the early 1980s. An expensive camera was sheathed in the middle stump, and a microphone used to pick up snicks (unless Lillee and Chappell were losing their cool). Stump-Cam revolutionised cricket broadcast in an era that famously also saw Kerry Packer take on Cricket Australia, experiment with white cricket balls, limited overs cricket and more.
As the 90s rolled around, the BBC also started using stump cameras; one of which was spectacularly shattered by fast bowler Devon Malcolm the 1990-91 Ashes tour. Over time, stump cameras became standard, and new Channel 9 innovations like the Snikometer speed gun (1999; in conjunction with Sky <keyword id="6356028" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sports">Sports</keyword>), Hawkeye (2002) and HotSpot (2006) have been introduced for backyard umpires to enjoy.

<h2>3. Winged Keel (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/yachts">Yacht Racing</a>)</h2>
In 1983 it had been more than 130 years since the New York Yacht Club relinquished its hold on the America’s Cup. Until, of course, Australia II – designed by Ben Lexcen and owned by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/alan-bond">Alan Bond</a> syndicate – made history by winning four races to three. Who can forget that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/bob-hawke">Bob Hawke’s</a> reaction?
The success was largely attributed to Ben Lexcen’s innovative Wing Keel design and his use of reduced waterline length, lightweight carbon fibre boom and efficient vertical sails. The secretive keel delivered Australia II huge advantages in maneuverability and changed the direction of high performance sailboat design.

<h2>4. Graphics And Imaging (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/swimming">Swimming</a> And, Well, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/sport">All Sport</a>)</h2>
American TV networks are obsessive about sports graphics, but that doesn’t mean they have a monopoly on innovation. For its broadcast of the Sydney Olympic 2000 swimming — starting with the qualifying trials — Channel 9 partnered with Germany’s Orad Hi-Tec Systems to debut what NBC Sports and Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol would later call “one of the greatest advances in Olympic television ever.”
That breakthrough: a virtual world record line that let Australians at home and in pubs cheer swimmers past a thin yellow line. Continued developments introduced a submerged country flag in each lane for swimming and expanded use in cricket, athletics and American football. Touch down!

<h2>5. The Automatic Totalisator (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/category/horse-racing">Horse Racing</a>)</h2>
In 1913, before computers, computational problems were solved with mechanical solutions. It was still a year before Thomas Watson would join the company later known as IBM. That’s why England-born New Zealander George Julius prototyped a vote-counting machine called the automatic totalisator while working as engineer in Sydney. The government said no, so Julius adapted the concept into a large-scale race odds calculator and formed Automatic Totalisators Ltd., operating from Sydney.
The totalisator debuted at Auckland racing club, followed by Gloucester Park Racetrack in Western Australia. George Julius would later become chairman at the CSIRO and was knighted in 1929. His machine inspired years of horseracing totalisator innovation, and was a precursor to dividend prediction. Shout your kiwi mate a beer next time you have a flutter.

<h2>6. Super Sopper (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=cricket+australia">Cricket</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=tennis">Tennis</a>)</h2>
Imagine a world where rain delays were extended indefinitely until grounds and courts dried. It’s a couch potato and sports fan’s nightmare. You might even remember those dark days. Welcome to 1974. Gordon Withnall’s sneaking in a round of golf in Sydney when his ball lands in a large puddle of water. As an inventor, the problem bothered him, but he soon built a prototype ‘Super Sopper’, received a world patent and was voted best machine of the night on ABC’s TV’s The Inventors.
Before long, the Melbourne Cricket Ground asked for a customised larger version, and hallowed English ground, Lords, also bought into the idea. Eventually, the ‘Sandpiper’ model was drying saturated <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=tennis">tennis courts</a> within fifteen minutes. How’s that for Aussie know-how.
<h2>7. MoTeC Engine Telemetry (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=motorsport">Motor Sport</a>)</h2>
In the early 1990s, Melbourne-based MoTeC pioneered the use of live telemetry and data logging in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/?s=motorsport">Australian motorsport</a>. Soon after the home workshop developed one of the world’s first temperature-compensated Lambada meters for measuring air/fuel ratios.
Fast forward a few years and MoTeC’s purpose-built Research Centre opened in 2002 and its advanced engine management systems and data analysis tools have been adopted in Le Mans, NASCAR, Australian V8 Supercars, Indy Car, the Dakar Rally, F1 Powerboats, Formula 4000 and the military. This is technology behind pit stop strategy, engine optimisation, telemetry data for television viewers, and more.

Then there are the Aussies who invented the sport codes and techniques like Australian Rules football (circa 1858), touch football (~1960s), the ‘Australian crawl’ freestyle swim stroke (early 1900s), polocrosse (1938), callisthenics (1880s) and even the crouching stance at the start of an athletics sprint race! Aboriginal runner Bobby McDonald revolutionised the standing start way back in the 1890s.

The 7 Greatest Australian Sporting Innovations 

India’s pathetic, slipshod batting, filled with childish mistakes, virtually handed the third Test to England on a platter at Southampton. Add to that largely ineffective bowling — especially from the exceptionally unfortunate <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/pankaj-singh/4001/4100">Pankaj Singh</a> — and shoddy fielding, and you have a recipe for disaster. Like it or not, England have their tail up now, and from being a series that India looked certain to win, this has become a very, very tough challenge for them indeed. 
 
The change needs to come from the top. I have never been more let down by <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">MS </a><a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">Dhoni</a>’s captaincy than I was during the second innings at Southampton. As many of you probably know, I am a huge Dhoni fan, and I was truly disappointed at the way he persisted with three slips, even as England were snatching runs from all corners of the ground. It was as though he had just given up and wanted to go home. 
 
At the other end of the spectrum, his opposite number, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/alastair-cook/3001/3056">Alastair Cook</a>, was regaining confidence both as batsman and as leader with every ball, every minute. I doubt whether <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravindra-jadeja/4001/32004">Ravindra Jadeja</a> will ever live down the dropped catch off Cook when the <keyword id="1411" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="captain">captain</keyword> was on 15. 
 
Speaking of Jadeja, no matter what anyone says, he is not a wicket-taking bowler, but a defensive one. He may have landed a few victims in the IPL, but that’s more because batsmen got themselves out trying to slog him out of the park. That’s a different story from Test cricket, where his limitations are many, and severe. 
 
Thankfully, though, the mysterious affair of the omission of <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin/4001/26007">Ravichandran Ashwin</a> is about to be addressed. Why an off-break bowler has sat out three games against a team that has not one, not two, but five left-handed batsmen, I will never know. Get him out on the pitch and let him bowl into the bowlers’ footholds! 
 
So assuming Ashwin comes in, who does he replace? India certainly need a fifth bowler, particularly now that <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ishant-sharma/4001/4094">Ishant Sharma</a> is out of the picture, because they seem to have mistakenly supposed that the four-bowler strategy that worked on the Lord’s green top will work everywhere else. Therefore, a regular batsman needs to go, and there are at least four options. The prime candidate for me would be <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/shikhar-dhawan/4001/28004">Shikhar Dhawan</a>, who has shown himself to be sadly lacking in both footwork and technique. 
 
The other letdowns, of course, are <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/rohit-sharma/4001/4095">Rohit Sharma</a>, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/cheteshwar-pujara/4001/4106">Cheteswar Pujara</a>, and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/virat-kohli/4001/25007">Virat Kohli</a>. Sharma in particular was a waste of time at Southampton, getting out to an ugly shot against the spinner, trying to hit over the top. We know how good India’s young batsmen can be, but, as has happened many times in the past, their fame seems to exceed their performance. 
 
One more area of concern for India is the entire Anderson affair. So intent were the Indians on stopping <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/james-anderson/3001/3040">James Anderson</a> from playing that their focus seems to have shifted from beating England, and all that they succeeded in doing was to prove how desperately they wanted him out of the way. Now that he has got away scot free, they need to contend with him all over again at Old Trafford. My advice to them would be to avoid trying to score against him, and simply see him off. 
 
England are unlikely to tamper with a winning team, unless <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/steven-finn/3001/3080">Steven Finn</a> comes in, and he’s a fine young bowler. They got lucky with quite a few umpiring decisions at Southampton, but a win is a win, and like it or not, as I said, England have turned a corner and look a different team now.
