Take a look at how this will impact your pocket. First off, what are capital gains? Simply put, any gains or profits you make when you sell a capital asset like your properties, investments in stock or mutual funds and more is counted as capital gains. What sets capital assets aside is their ability to generate monetary value over a long period. Depending on the time period they are held for before they are sold, <keyword id="20584761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">long-term capital gains</keyword> (LTCG) or <keyword id="20584760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="short-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">short-term capital gains</keyword> (STCG) is applicable. So, what has changed? In one sharp move, <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> pushed up the long-term <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword> from 10% previously to 12.5% now. Moreover, <keyword id="22142879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indexation-benefit" source="keywords">indexation benefit</keyword>, which reduced the total tax outgo from the investor's hands, also went away with these proposed changes. As for short-term capital gains tax, it was decreased to 15% from its previous rate of 20%. However, to ease the pain, the maximum exemption amount for long-term capital gains in a single year was increased from Rs 1,00,000 previously, to Rs 1,25,000 now. All listed securities will be considered long-term capital assets (and hence, LTCG will be levied) if they are held for a period of 12 months. For unlisted securities and other immovable properties, LTCG will be applicable post 24 months of holding them. Bonds, debentures and gold will have also have a holding period of 24 months, from the earlier duration of 36 months, in order to be eligible for long-term capital gains tax. What does indexation mean? Indexation allowed <keyword id="19900618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investors" source="keywords">investors</keyword> to account for inflation, by adding the same to their initial purchase price. This would result in a higher purchase price, significantly lowering the overall gains. But now, capital gains tax will be calculated at the actual purchase price (ouch!) with no scope to factor for inflation, which would mean a higher tax outflow from the investor's pockets. This benefit has been done away with for real estate and gold. Under indexation benefit, it is not your initial purchase, or acquisition price that is taken into consideration, but rather your indexed cost of acquisition that comes to play. This is calculated using the CII of the sale year and the purchase year. This helps in adjusting the purchase cost of your property for inflation when you are selling it. The government calculates and notifies the public of the CII (cost inflation index) every year. For instance, Aditya's father purchased a property worth Rs 40,00,000 in 2009 (FY2009-10). In 2004 (FY2024-25), he decides to sell this for around a crore. How will his tax liability be calculated? First, lets consider that he had indexation benefit. By that, his indexed cost of acquisition (there's a long formula to this) would be Rs 98,10,810, making his long-term gains at Rs 1,89,189. So, 20% of this would come down to Rs 37,837. But lets also consider if he did not have this indexation benefit. While indexation benefits have been done away with starting July 23rd, 2024, lets assume this rule came into effect at the very start of FY25, or 1st April, 2024. This would mean your total capital gain would be 12.5% of Rs 60,00,000, or a staggering Rs 7,50,000. What are the experts saying? Nilesh Sharma - President &amp; Executive Director, SAMCO Securities sees this as a double whammy which leaves much to be desired on the investors front. "It seems govt wants share in investors’ profit. At a time when the equity indices are at an all-time high, the government has tried to take a share out of the growth and the profits earned by the investors by increasing both the STT rates on derivatives and an increase in STCG and LTCG", he notes "The removal of indexation benefit for LTCG will also impact the real estate industry and will slow down the resale of residential flats /lands. There is a fear that it may also increase the proportion of cash transaction in real estate deals, which will be again be counterproductive. The government has not announced any major changes for the individual tax payers except a slight change in the tax slabs and a minor increase in the standard deduction. This too, is however applicable only in the new tax regime, leaving nothing for the tax payers who have opted for the old tax regime", continued Sharma. Palka Arora Chopra, Director, Master Capital Services Ltd notes that the removal of indexation benefits might negatively impact investor returns, leading to a short-term bearish outlook for the sector. "While the 25% increase in the Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax is manageable and not likely to deter investors significantly, the increase in short-term capital gains (STCG) tax from 15% to 20% could have a more pronounced negative impact in the medium term", she continued.

Although certain food items have caused inflationary spikes, their impact is limited within the overall consumer price index basket, he explained. The CEA praised the shift in fiscal expenditure priorities over the past seven years, with greater focus on capital investments rather than revenue spending. This reallocation, he suggested, has bolstered long-term economic stability and growth potential. India’s GDP growth for the July-September quarter was 5.4%, significantly below the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast of 7%. While this has sparked concerns among economists, Nageswaran urged against overreacting. Erratic monsoons and excessive rainfall disrupted economic activity in Q2, he explained, while global uncertainties and supply chain pressures further weighed on growth. Despite these challenges, he maintained confidence in the broader growth narrative, citing improvements in key economic metrics. For instance, India’s gross capital formation has risen from 27.3% of GDP in the second decade of the 2000s to 30.8% today. Private consumption remains steady, and exports—spanning both services and manufacturing—continue to perform well even amid challenging global conditions. Nageswaran also underscored India’s growing competitiveness in international trade. He noted that the nation’s total <keyword id="24325087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports-as-a-percentage-of-GDP" source="keywords">exports as a percentage of GDP</keyword> now surpass China’s, showcasing its resilience and adaptability in a shifting global trade environment. Indian economy is resilient despite Q2 challenges, says CEA Nageswaran

Economists at the country's largest lender, SBI, today said they see India's Q2 real GDP growth slowing down further to 6.5% in the September quarter of this fiscal year. Amid concerns over the country's economic growth rate and whether it is slowing down, the analysts said they expect FY25 growth to come "closer to" 7%. SBI analysts join a long line of agencies like Fitch, ADB, IMF, Moody, World Bank, S&amp;P, and even RBI in forecasting India's GDP growth for FY25 in the range of 6.8% to 7.2% for FY25, driven by robust consumption and investment. SIP inflows have been at an all-time high, and so has QIP (qualified institutional placement) fundraising. As many as 71 companies raised Rs 88,678 crore this year through QIPs. Activity in Indian primary markets also remained robust, with 78 mainboard IPOs in 2024; this is a 111% rise from just 38 listings in FY23. Between April and June 2024, India's real GDP grew by 6.7%, the lowest growth seen in 15 quarters, pushing experts to believe that India is caught in a cycle of slowdown. "There is some incipient pressure evident on the domestic economy. Based on our analysis of 50 meaningful leading indicators (both consumption and demand-centric), a dip looks plausible across select cohorts of agriculture, industry, and services in Q2," the <keyword id="22337294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI-economists" source="keywords">SBI economists</keyword> added. Stating that they track 50 indicators to gauge economic activity, SBIs note said the proportion of indicators showing acceleration declined to 69% in Q2 FY25, as against 80% in Q2 FY24 and 78% in Q1 FY25. However, things might be changing now, given that rural demand has started looking up amidst muted urban demand. SBI also explained that the ongoing regulatory tightening on unsecured lending and roadblocks that are hindering rollover/refinancing of debt through unsecured credit are dismantling the unwarranted exuberance that had built up post-pandemic, especially in the urban areas. Madhu Lunawat, CIO &amp; Fund Manager, Bharat Value Fund states that the overall investment environment remains strong due to favorable economic conditions supporting government policies &amp; reforms. "The sustainable inflow from domestic investors is going to support the Indian equity market in any kind of correction. The long-term bullish structure of Indian economy will continue to attract new domestic &amp; global investors to participate in India’s growth story through various Investment avenues.” <h2>Rate cuts not on cards</h2>RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das clarified today that changing the monetary policy stance to 'neutral' does not mean a rate cut is imminent in the central bank's next policy announcement. Notably, RBI MPC is set to meet between December 4 and 6, 2024, to decide if the prevailing repo rate of 6.5%, which has stayed unchanged for the last 2 years, should be brought down or not. In its last meeting, The <keyword id="20501100" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI-monetary-policy" source="keywords">RBI monetary policy</keyword> committee had shifted its stance to 'neutral' indicating that it is open to adjusting interest rates based on economic conditions. "It should not be assumed that we have done this, so therefore the next step is a rate cut. A change in stance doesn't mean that the next step is a rate cut in the very next meeting. It's not so," Das said. Das also cautioned that inflation remains a key factor, and inflation and CPI prints for October are expected to stay high.

The answer comes down to sentiment — so much positive news for so long that it has become the new normal," Hayes said.He added: "The risk is that the lack of risk aversion would leave investors exposed to a degree of sustained macro deterioration yet to be experienced since the bull got underway."Hayes isn't calling for an imminent peak in the stock market, especially with falling interest rates historically acting as a tailwind for stock prices, but he's aware that it could happen."The last two secular bulls lasted 24 years (1942 - 1966) and 18 years (1982 - 2000). But with the secular bull mature, we're watching out for signs that it may be at risk," Hayes said.The first warning sign of a near-term peak in the stock market is worsening breadth among the underlying issues of the US stock market.In other words, if only a handful of companies drive the stock market higher, that would be a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-rally-broadens-small-caps-another-win-for-bulls-2024-7">bad sign,</a> as it was at the secular top in 2000.Investors don't have to worry about that signal flashing just yet, with recent data showing a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/rare-bull-signal-perfect-track-record-just-flashed-stock-market-2024-9">surge in market breadth.</a>Extreme valuations would be another warning sign to watch for, according to Hayes, who added that high valuations price in a perfect macro environment, and if something goes wrong, those valuations can fall apart rather quickly."Expensive valuations appear justified when earnings growth is coming through, but that also leaves the market vulnerable when earnings turn lower," Hayes said.Long-term peaks in the stock market also typically occur when earnings growth and economic growth hit extreme levels, as the other side of that boom is typically a swift deceleration in growth.The secular stock market peaks of 1929, 1966, and 2000 all coincided with a peak in S&amp;P 500 earnings growth, "after which prices dropped on the growing realization that the valuations were not justified," Hayes said.While valuations and earnings growth are currently at high levels, they could have more room to grow, according to the note."The current level of earnings growth has yet to reach its levels at the peaks in 1929 and 2000 but has already closed in on its levels of 1966," Hayes said.He added: "For a downturn in earnings growth, we would expect to see a downturn in economic growth."Finally, Hayes said investors should keep an eye on bond yields and commodities, as they will reflect a potential rebound in inflation. And a rebound in inflation, coupled with rising interest rates, would be an unwelcome warning sign for the current bull rally in stocks."If that would start to change with a severe cyclical bear, the secular bear warnings would strengthen, and we would be likely to see reversals from extremes in valuations, earnings growth, and economic performance," Hayes concluded.

A recent report by Axis AMC also highlighted the growing appetite for ETFs, which witnessed net sales of Rs 15,403 crore in October 2024. While 46% of younger investors favor index funds, only 35% of Gen X and Boomers do so. Millennials and Gen X investors also have a keen interest in factor or smart beta funds, reflecting their appetite for innovative, albeit aggressive investment strategies. Passive funds have become a core component of investor portfolios, with 80% of investors increasing their allocation to these funds in 2024, compared to 53% last year. The Axis report echoed similar sentiments, noting that net sales in the passive category inched up to Rs 8,025 crore in October 2024. The combined assets under management (AUM) of passive funds have surged from Rs 7 lakh crore in September 2023 to over Rs 11 lakh crore by September 2024—a 1.5x growth in just one year. The survey also noted a growing popularity of ETFs, with 57% of respondents investing in them, up from 41% in 2023. Of these, 26% invest solely in ETFs, while 31% have diversified between ETFs and index funds. This rising preference is matched by a commitment to long-term investment. A significant 81% of investors plan to hold their passive investments for over three years, highlighting sustained confidence in the growth potential of these funds. Sectoral indices like Nifty IT and Nifty Bank dominate as the top choice for passive fund investors, selected by 67% of respondents. Benchmark indices such as the Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 follow closely, preferred by 61% of investors. A recent, similar report by stock broker Angel One also throws a spotlight on how young India plans and prefers mutual funds when it comes to savings and investments. The report, titled "Young Indians' Saving Habits Outlook 2024," compiled by Fin One, stated that 45% of respondents aged 22-35 have made it a point to save up some of their savings in mutual funds. A year ago, this figure stood at just 32%. Most of these investors make their way into mutual funds via SIPs, or systematic investment plans. 52% of respondents in the age cohort of 22-35 are now using SIPs to invest in mutual funds, up from 44% in the previous year. As for what was the driving factor behind beginning their investment journey, 42% underlined the past performance of funds, while 38% noted that advice from financial advisors remained a key consideration. 38% of young Indians are now increasingly focusing on building an emergency corpus, compared to 28% the year before. India could see a shift in foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the second term of Donald Trump (Trump 2.0) as President of the United States, says a research report by the State Bank of India. The report highlighted that under his first term, Trump 1.0, the Trump administration made sweeping regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the U.S., which impacted FDI inflows globally, including India. It added that if similar policies are reintroduced in Trump 2.0 also, it could create challenges for emerging markets like India, which rely on FDI as a significant driver of economic growth. Notably, a recent Kotak report highlighted that a complete Republican control over all arms of the US government would mean increased US earnings via corporate tax cuts, higher tariffs on imports into the US and greater US fiscal deficits. The first two could spell doom for emerging markets like India and China, since foreign investors will make a beeline for investing more money in the US markets, which will come at the cost of intense selloff in emerging markets. However, higher fiscal deficits will eventually lead to the dollar weakening after the initial euphoria dies down. "India may see shifts in foreign direct investments (FDIs) during Trump 2.0. The Trump 1.0 administration saw significant regulatory changes aimed at attracting investments back to the US," the SBI report stated. However, given that India has been gradually diversifying its sources of FDI (foreign direct investments), this trend could serve as a buffer against any potential decline. Moreover, domestic institutional investors have been stepping up big time, maintaining some balance to the massive exodus of FIIs over the past month. So far in November 2024, FIIs have withdrawn Rs 19,849 crores from the cash segment in Indian markets, while DIIs have poured in Rs 14,014.18 crores as of November 10th, 2024. "India is no longer dependent on the traditional sources of FDI inflows... unlike the recent past, FDI is now coming in many new sectors," noted the SBI report. Unlike a decade ago, when most FDI inflows came from a limited number of traditional sectors, India is now attracting investment in a wide array of industries, including renewable energy, sea transport, medical devices, and surgical appliances. Data suggests over the last 24 years, i.e., between April 2000 and June 2024, FDIs have poured in $1,013.4 billion in the Indian economy. Out of this, 67%, i.e., $689.88 billion, has come in just the last 10 years. The report added there are up to 12 emerging sectors showing strong FDI interest, which could help offset any loss of inflows in conventional sectors if there is a shift in global investment patterns under another Trump administration. In the last financial year, the top 5 sectors that have received the highest quantum of FDI inflow include the services sector (finance, banking, insurance, and business) which makes up about 16% of the inflows. This is followed computer software &amp; hardware, which constitute around 15% of total FDI flows. Trading and telecommunications follows with a share of 6% each, and Automobile Industry comes next with a 5% share. In the short term, the potential for increased U.S. tariffs, more restrictive H-1B visa policies, and a stronger dollar could bring some volatility to India's trade and investment landscape. However, in the long term, these challenges might also encourage India to expand its manufacturing capabilities, diversify export markets, and focus on becoming economically more self-reliant. Notably, India has maintained a merchandise trade surplus with the U.S. despite tariffs imposed during Trump's first term. This indicates that Indian exports have remained resilient, and there is potential to strengthen this trade relationship further by capitalizing on emerging sectors and reducing dependency on traditional industries. Suman Chowdhury, Executive Director &amp; Chief Economist, Acuité Ratings &amp; Research Limited cautions that in the medium to long term, the trade relationship with the US may see a structural improvement. "Higher tariff and trade restrictions in the US with China should translate into better opportunities for exports of manufactured goods from India", he adds.

India's services sector showed robust expansion in October, per the <keyword id="22267674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HSBC-India-Services-PMI" source="keywords">HSBC India Services PMI</keyword> (Purchasing Managers' Index), which rose to 58.5 last month, up from September's ten-month low of 57.7. October's figures managed to exceed even the long-run PMI average of 54.1, largely on the back of a strong sales pipeline and elevated demand. Employment, or job creation in this sector accelerated to its fastest growth rate in 26 months. Anticipating solid, sustained demand in the near term, firms added new employees at the most rapid pace in over 2 years. October also saw <keyword id="23834175" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="input-costs-rise" source="keywords">input costs rise</keyword> at their fastest pace in 3 months, indicating renewed demand and economic activity in the country. The ISM Services PMI, an indicator of the economic health of the US, also exceeded expectations, reaching 56.0 compared to the forecasted 53.8, suggesting strong growth within the services sector. "During October, the Indian services sector experienced strong expansions in output and consumer demand, as well as job creation, which achieved a 26-month high," said Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC. The sector saw increased business activity across multiple fronts, with export sales showing significant growth and companies reporting stronger demand from international markets including Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and the UK. However, industry experts remain cautiously optimistic about the sector's prospects. Suman Chowdhury, Chief Economist at Acuité Ratings &amp; Research, noted that while the October recovery is promising, several factors warrant careful monitoring. “The recovery in the PMI indices in October 2024 is promising for the second half of the fiscal after the dip in several high-frequency indicators in September 2024. Industrial and service activity has expectedly received a boost from the anticipated spike in consumption demand in Q3 FY25, driven by the festivities and the marriage season," she said. Chowdhury added that it will be crucial to monitor the sustainability of these PMI indices at these elevated levels, given the reported weakness in urban demand in Q2 as flagged by FMCG companies. She also noted that potential increases in wholesale and core retail inflation, combined with higher input costs and wage pressures, could delay expected interest rate cuts. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das also noted that inflation and CPI figures for October might be elevated, pushing ahead any chances of interest rate cuts in the near future. Acuité Ratings &amp; Research maintains its GDP growth forecast at 7.0% for FY25 while acknowledging the multiple downside risks that will require close observation in the coming months.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Europe's economy could be negatively impacted by Trump's proposed tariffs, economists say.</li><li>They say the EU will need to employ some retaliatory measures but has to be careful not to escalate.</li></ul>The US stock market has cheered the pro-business agenda that Donald Trump has promised in a second term, but policymakers in Europe are bracing for potentially tough four years ahead as the President-elect looks poised to potentially set off <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-reaction-donald-trump-election-victory-tariffs-trade-disputes-2024-11">a new trade war</a>. Trump has championed tariffs as a key protectionist policy to boost his "America first" agenda, proposing sweeping tariffs of 10%-20% on all countries and 60% on goods from China. Europe appears particularly at risk from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-europe-recession-fears-economy-exports-autos-bank-2024-11">the impact of tariffs</a> amid an already fragile economy, experts said.Germany's central bank president <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zeit.de/2024/48/joachim-nagel-bundesbankchef-wirtschaftskrise-inflation-ampel-aus">Joachim Nagel</a> says the tariffs could cost the country 1% of its GDP, causing it to possibly slip into negative growth next year, while both French President Emmanuel Macron and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi have warned the US and Europe are barreling toward a trade war. Goldman Sachs said recently the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-presidency-impact-election-europe-economic-growth-gdp-goldman-sachs-2024-11">tariffs could cost</a> the whole euro area a 0.5% hit to real GDP, with the bulk of the downturn likely to be felt next year.Economists and analysts said that in order to avoid a trade war, policymakers in Europe need to employ a specific playbook to mitigate the economic drag while keeping trade tensions in check.<h2 id="503c71ba-c363-4216-ac76-b4f4d82a312f">Retaliatory tariffs, but at a smaller scale</h2>According to Andrew Kenningham, chief European economist at Capital Economics, the European Union will likely need to retaliate, though not in exactly the same way as the US.Kenningham says the EU will likely hit the US with targeted tariffs on certain industries, rather than an across-the-board action."It would probably impose targeted tariffs on products of symbolic or political importance rather than an across-the-board tariff and probably on a fairly modest scale," he wrote in a recent note.It wouldn't be the first time the EU has employed such measures. Kenningham points to the EU's use of item-specific duties on US imports, like Harley Davidsons and bourbon whiskey, after Trump employed tariffs on steel and aluminum from the EU during his first term in 2018.Those retaliatory tariffs were worth less than half those imposed by the US at the time, but worked to soften the blow without instigating further tensions between the US and Europe, he said.This time around, any retaliation will have to strike a similarly smaller blow than the actions from the US, Kenningham said."They want to de-escalate, rather than escalate any trade conflict," he told Business Insider.<h2 id="4cd91793-34a3-437e-9bac-22a987b5117e">Trade deals to avoid tariffs</h2>Kenningham said EU policymakers could also negotiate a deal to avoid US tariffs. The European Commission could pledge to purchase certain commodities from the US in greater quantities in exchange for an exemption from tariffs, similar to how the commission negotiated over purchases of liquefied natural gas and soybeans in Trump's first term.Kenningham says the commission doesn't have total control over actually implementing these trade deals, though, so it's unlikely Trump would opt to go that route again.Alternatively, the bloc could strike a deal to purchase more defense equipment from the US to continue <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eu-lend-ukraine-45-billion-with-without-the-us-russia-2024-9">supporting Ukraine</a> as the US appears likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-trump-could-handle-ukraine-war-if-reelected-scenarios-2024-10">scale back</a>, Kenningham added.<h2 id="71c65274-fbec-4f67-a682-6d1449f58ee3">Match the US's lean away from China</h2>Another option would be for the EU to try and side with the US in its trade war with China, Kenningham says, referring to Trump's proposals for 60% tariffs on good from China. That could mean further barriers to imports of Chinese electric vehicles, as well as more curbs on investment from Chinese firms in Europe, he says.That plan could face pushback from Germany, though, since China is a big market for its stumbling <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/germany-auto-giants-volkswagen-bmw-mercedes-struggle-sales-china-evs-2024-10">auto industry</a>."The automotive sector is frontline. German car producers are extremely exposed to the Chinese market," the Brookings Institution's Carlo Bastasin said, adding, "The automotive sector is undoubtedly vulnerable. It's already going very, very badly."But the EU may not have a choice, Kenningham said."Admittedly, the EU will not want to drastically cut ties with China," he wrote. "But policymakers may be forced to move more rapidly if faced with strong US pressure."In reality, some version of all of those potential actions will likely come into play, Kenningham added. For now, trade experts say it's still unclear when—and how much—Trump will raise tariffs on the EU.Bastasin doesn't expect tariffs as high as Trump has threatened, and thinks they will fall closer to 5%, which isn't a sizable increase from the 3% tariff average reached under his first presidency. Still, he warned that any drastic actions from the US could pose long-term risks to the relationship between the two powers."There is a possibility that if the strategy toward Europe is very aggressive, Europeans may change attitudes toward the Transatlantic Alliance. I don't mean NATO, but on traditional friendship and cooperation," Bastasin said.
