Japan’s Musashi Seimitsu and Log9 Materials partner to offer EV powertrain and battery solutions

<ul class="summary-list"><li>About 700,000 passengers were affected by air traffic control chaos in the UK in August 2023.</li><li>A report found an engineer struggled to log in remotely, meaning it took longer to resolve the issue.</li></ul>An engineer's login struggles hindered attempts to solve an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/becoming-air-traffic-controller-career-pros-cons-of-job-2022-1">air traffic control</a> meltdown that affected 700,000 passengers in the UK.The details were revealed Thursday in a report by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority about the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/london-airports-travel-chaos-flight-delays-europe-photos-2023-8">August 2023 travel chaos</a>.It estimated the event cost airlines, airports, insurers, passengers, and others between £75 million and £100 million ($127 million) — and that about 300,000 people had their flights canceled. Another 95,000 were delayed by more than three hours, and a further 300,000 faced shorter delays.The incident was caused by a software failure. A single flight plan for a journey from Los Angeles to Paris — passing over the UK — contained two waypoints with the same name.This confused the automatic flight planning system, causing both the primary and the backup to shut down within 20 seconds.The system can usually process 900 flight plans an hour during peak periods, but <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-traffic-control-problems-delays-travel-chaos-holiday-weekend-uk-2023-8">air traffic controllers had to process them manually</a> — reducing its capacity to just 60 an hour, the report found.It also identified numerous factors that meant it took longer to identify and rectify the problem.One such factor was that a Level 2 engineer systems expert was on call but couldn't intervene remotely because their login and password "could not be readily verified due to the architecture of the system."It took the engineer 90 minutes to reach the air traffic control site — just over three hours after the meltdown began.All the traffic regulations implemented due to the incident were lifted after a total of nine-and-a-half hours.Delays and cancellations had knock-on effects on airline schedules, causing further issues for the next week. The report estimated that airlines lost £65 million ($82 million) as a result.The report recommended that NATS, the UK's air traffic control provider, has a Level 2 engineer working on-site during busy travel periods.Its 34 recommendations include government legislation, requiring airports and airlines to review the support available for affected passengers, and for NATS to provide earlier notices of possible disruption.UK Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said, "My department will look to introduce reforms, when we can, to provide air travelers with the highest level of protection possible."A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ryanair-ceo-calls-air-traffic-control-boss-resign-flight-chaos-2024-9">NATS</a> spokesperson said in a statement that it welcomed the report and apologized "for the inconvenience passengers suffered because of this very unusual technical incident. Over the 15 months since this incident, we have worked hard to address the lessons from it, and to ensure this particular issue cannot happen again."NATS has implemented most of the 48 recommendations from its own investigation, including "improving our engagement with our airline and airport customers, our wider contingency and crisis response, and our engineering support processes."

Air traffic control chaos affecting 700,000 passengers was made worse when an engineer couldn't log in remotely

This record of events could include instances of unauthorized access to networks and accounts. If logs are not recorded properly, then any records of potential problems are lost and the company and its customers may have missed intrusions.Between September 2 and September 19, "a bug in one of Microsoft's internal monitoring agents resulted in a malfunction in some of the agents when uploading log data to our internal logging platform," Microsoft wrote in the customer notification.There's no evidence of cyberattacks stemming from this incident."This issue did not impact the uptime of any customer-facing services or resources -- it only affected the collection of log events. Additionally, this issue is not related to any security compromise," the notification explained.Affected products included Microsoft Entra, an identity-management service. Microsoft Sentinel, a security information and event-management product, was also impacted, along with Microsoft Defender for Cloud and Microsoft Purview, a data loss prevention product."Microsoft Sentinel customers may have experienced potential gaps in security related logs or events, possibly affecting customers' ability to analyze data, detect threats, or generate security alerts," the update warned.BI asked Microsoft to comment on this episode on Thursday and Friday. Spokespeople Frank Shaw and Jill Austin, along with the company's outside PR firm WE Communications, didn't respond to multiple requests for comment. This is a particularly a big deal for Microsoft because the company has been saying that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/internal-microsoft-email-shows-security-leadership-shakeup-2023-12">security</a> is a top priority. It recently introduced a Security Futures Initiative, largely in response to its mishandling of security incidents, including what the Department of Homeland Security called "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-security-issues-government-report-chinese-hacks-2024-4">cascade</a>" of errors that allowed Chinese hackers in 2023 to access thousands of cloud customer emails.The idea was that Microsoft would make security its first priority in everything. Flight logs show Elon Musk's private jets are busy hitting swing states as he campaigns for Trump

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Elon Musk said recently that "two homicidal maniacs" had threatened his life.</li><li>Law-enforcement records show Tesla's HQ has had several "terroristic threat" reports.</li></ul>In recent months, "two homicidal maniacs" have threatened to kill <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>, the billionaire tech mogul said at Tesla's latest annual shareholder meeting."I probably need to like work out and, you know, and like not get assassinated or something," the CEO of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-features">electric-car company</a> told shareholders June 13 in response to a question about what he's doing to keep himself safe and healthy.Musk said the two people "aspirationally" tried to kill him and "a bunch of other people" in the past seven months, forcing him to be a bit more "standoffish."Security is a high priority for Musk. He owns his own security company, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla">Tesla</a> pays millions of dollars to protect Musk, a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing shows.The company has relatively tight security, and security has been increased at some of its factories in the wake of recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-layoffs">Tesla layoffs</a>, several workers told Business Insider. Tesla factory workers have also faced their fair share of scares over the years, including, most recently, an active-shooter report that turned out to be a false alarm.Law-enforcement records obtained by BI through a public-records request show that Musk has not been the only high-profile target of threats or intimidation at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-headquarters-hq">Tesla's sprawling corporate headquarters</a> in Austin.<div type="image" title="Zachary Kirkhorn wearing a black button-down shirt while sitting next to Elon Musk with his hands over his lap." height="1266" width="1593" msid="111286753" hostid="261"></div>In March 2023, Tesla's chief financial officer at the time, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cfo-zachary-kirkhorn-rumored-elon-musk-ceo-successor-leaving-2023-8">Zachary Kirkhorn</a> — who board members considered making Musk's successor before he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zachary-kirkhorn-elon-musk-tesla-quit-13-years-gene-munster-2023-8">unexpectedly resigned</a> — received a death threat via email, according to 911 records and a sheriff's office incident report viewed by BI. The missive demanded $300,000 in bitcoin not to end his life.The Travis County Sheriff's Office described the incident as a "terroristic threat" in its report, the documents show, though ultimately law enforcement believed it to be a scam.Under Texas law, terroristic threats include threats of violence that are intended to put people in fear of imminent bodily injury, cause a reaction by an emergency agency, or interrupt a place of employment.Other records from the sheriff's office obtained by BI show that at least five other 911 calls were made from Tesla's HQ between the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-elon-musk-gigafactory-texas-cyber-rodeo-2022-4">opening of the Austin Gigafactory</a> in April 2022 and January of this year for what law enforcement also categorized as terroristic threats. The sheriff's office is seeking to withhold the records for most of those incidents from BI.<h2 id="8794e4e2-1e9a-4bae-b733-e6f66dc7d19b">An email sender claimed they were 'hired to kill' Kirkhorn if he didn't step down</h2>In the case of Kirkhorn, a security officer at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-gigafactory">Tesla Gigafactory</a> initially called 911 at the time to report the incident, according to the records. The security officer told deputies that the CFO had gotten an email from someone claiming to have been "hired to kill you if you don't step down," the report provided to BI said."Wire $300,000 dollars to bitcoin account within 12 hours," the email to Kirkhorn added, according to the incident report.The Tesla security officer told deputies the email was sent to multiple email addresses with variations of Kirkhorn's name, suggesting that the sender was attempting to guess his email address.The security officer also said he believed it was the "first threat" that Kirkhorn received by email, according to the report.In a second interview with deputies, the security officer told authorities his team was able to trace information in the threatening email back to Nigeria.A Travis County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, Kristen Dark, confirmed to BI that the email was found to have originated from Nigeria and was thought to be spam."Based on the spam email mail address it is likely a scam attempt," the incident report read. "This was brought to Kirkhorn's attention and he was ok with just documenting the situation. No further action needed."The case was ultimately suspended and no arrest was ever made, according to the incident report and Dark.Tesla and Kirkhorn did not respond to requests for comment.<div type="image" title="Cars frames on an assembly line in a long room." height="683" width="1024" msid="111286749" hostid="261"></div>Kirkhorn left Tesla last August after working at the carmaker for about 13 years. He held the title not only of CFO, but also "Master of Coin."His departure came as a shock to some. The Wall Street Journal had reported earlier that year that Kirkhorn could be in line to become <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/tesla-executive-elon-musk-cfo-zach-kirkhorn-b1998ae7?">the next CEO of Tesla</a>.<h2 id="e2017c4f-e393-47bf-af66-86a250b17754">Other 911 calls related to a threat against Musk and a Tesla employee</h2>One of the other 911 calls that the sheriff's office designated as a "terroristic threat" related to a report by a Tesla employee who said he was threatened in February 2023 by another worker while on the job. The suspect in that case was accused of threatening to pull the man off a forklift and "slap the shit" out of him, according to an incident report.The employee who made the report told deputies that he had been "advised to allow Tesla Security to work the incident first before attempting to file a police report" but that he got "tired of waiting on Tesla," the documents show.The case was closed after the accuser told deputies he no longer wished to pursue it, but he sought to get it reopened that July.Some Tesla workers told BI that tight production deadlines and the intensity of the work could sometimes create a high-pressure environment."Every time they ramped up production, I felt like a frog in a boiling pot of water," one former worker from the Austin factory said. "You could just feel the stress level at the factory shoot up, and sometimes that meant people were more likely to pop off or act out."Another 911 call that was made in January of this year and categorized as a terroristic threat related to a report of a Tesla employee threatening to kill Musk and US President Joe Biden. Travis County deputies responded to Tesla HQ at the time of the call.A day later, Justin Mathew McCauley of Minnesota was arrested on a felony charge of terroristic threat in connection to the incident. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by BI, security at Tesla alerted the Travis County Sheriff's Office of a threat made on McCauley's account on X, the social-media site owned by Musk."I will arrive in Texas, where the war has began on many fronts @X, @Tesla," one post said, according to the court documents. Another said, "@JoeBiden @X @Tesla @Elonmusk, I am planning to Kill all of you."According to the court papers, McCauley's wife notified deputies in Minnesota after he told her he was going to Texas and never coming back.McCauley was eventually stopped and arrested by Travis County deputies in Austin on January 28. He told them that he planned to go to the Gigafactory "to try and contact Elon Musk," the arrest affidavit says."Everything I did was completely insane. It seems like a bad dream," McCauley later told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fox7austin.com/news/tela-employee-threaten-to-kill-elon-musk-president-biden-justin-mccauley">FOX 7 Austin</a> in an on-camera interview. The 32-year-old former Tesla worker said he was in a state of "psychosis."McCauley was jailed for roughly four weeks before he was released on bond March 1. His next court hearing in the case is scheduled for July 3. Attempts to reach McCauley on Monday and Tuesday were unsuccessful.The details surrounding the other three 911 calls from Tesla's headquarters — which records show were made in November 2022, March 2023, and November 2023 — and the dispositions of those calls, were not provided to BI. The sheriff's office said in a letter sent to BI that the records fell under privacy and open-investigation exemptions to the public-records law and has asked the Office of the Attorney General of Texas to weigh in.Dark, the Travis County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, told BI that the agency did not provide additional security services for the Tesla factory but would respond to emergencies there as it would any other location in the county."The Gigafactory is in our agency's jurisdiction and we respond to 911 calls for service," Dark said.<h2 id="3c81ce33-91ba-4e82-aa6a-7bb75908b9d6">Tesla employees say security is thorough</h2>Last July, the Travis County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting an active shooter at the Austin Gigafactory. At the time, workers who were at the factory received a memo from Tesla telling them to take cover because of an "Active Attacker," two employees told BI."It was unsettling because no one really knew what was going on. We were just standing outside the building waiting to go back to work," one worker, who was there during the ordeal, told BI. Airline app glitch randomly logged customers into other people's accounts

Public sector mortgage lender, <keyword id="6359231" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Central-Bank-of-India" source="Orion">Central Bank of India</keyword> closed the third quarter of FY24 with higher net profit of Rs.717.86 crore. In a regulatory filing on Friday, the bank said that for the quarter ended December 31, 2023, it had earned a total interest income of Rs 7,809.21 crore (Q3FY23 Rs 6,716.55 crore) and a net profit of Rs 717.86 crore (Rs 458.22 crore). The profit went up drastically owing to the sharp spike in the bank's other income for the quarter under review at Rs 1,329.72 crore (Rs 919.16 crore). During the quarter under review, the bank's provisions for non-performing assets came down to Rs 726.69 crore (Rs 849.62 crore). As on December 31, 2023, the bank's gross and net non-performing assets stood at Rs 10,786.49l crore (December 31, 2023 Rs 18,489.97 crore) and Rs. 2,955,57 crore (Rs 4,060.92 crore). According to the Central Bank of India, during the quarter under review, its total business by 11.48% to Rs. 6,17,368 crore with total deposits growing by 9.53% to Rs 377,722 crore and gross advances going up by 14.71% to Rs 239,646 crore. Net Interest Income (NII) marginally declined by 4.04% on Y-o-Y basis to Rs 3,152 crore in Q3FY24 as against Rs 3,285 crore for Q3FY23. However excluding one off exceptional item, NII was up 3.73% from Rs 3,042 crore in Q3FY23 to Rs 3,125 crore in Q3FY24.

Fintech personal loans have contributed a vital role in financial inclusion, serving unaddressed market segments by sanctioning over Rs 2 lakh crore since April 2018, according to the report by the <keyword id="20190392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fintech-association" source="keywords">Fintech Association</keyword> for Consumer Empowerment (FACE), an industry body convening digital lenders. "Fintechs, while small in value, are playing a mighty role in furthering financial inclusion. As the digital economy shapes up, fintechs will expand in tandem, playing a pivotal role in customers' access to formal credit - important for their financial health and resilience," said <keyword id="20670247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugandh-saxena" source="keywords">Sugandh Saxena</keyword>, CEO of FACE. "The growing economy and digitalisation bring huge opportunities and obligations to the fintechs," <keyword id="19970173" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saxena" source="keywords">Saxena</keyword> added. The report analysed trends from data of 71 fintech NBFCs from April 2018 to September 2023. Fintech loans consistently increased their share in the personal loan market over the years, doubling their share in sanctions since FY18-19, the findings showed. "In loans outstanding, the share of fintech NBFCs is just 5 per cent of the total personal loans outstanding (as of September 2023) but accounts for over a third of active loan volumes," the data showed. In H1 FY 23-24, fintech loans accounted for 10 per cent of the sanction value but 62 per cent of the sanction volume, catering to sizeable, underserved segments with small-value loans. Fintech loans are climbing in ticket sizes, with nearly half of the sanction value coming from borrowers with ticket sizes more than Rs 50,000, the report mentioned. Fintech loans are moving up in the risk chain and distribution of sanctioned value across credit scores shows that the share of mid-low risk borrowers is increasing, from 36 per cent in FY 18-19 to 59 per cent in H1 FY 23-24. Fintech loan borrowers are younger, with two-thirds coming from the age bracket of less than 35 years, said the report.

The company has claimed that It has been able to cut down the processing time by 40%, required equipment by 35%, and cut down the cost per kWh by 6%. The company’s current production capacity stands at 50MWh per year. During the first year, the company will start a pilot program to test its battery cells and supply them to its OEM partners. In addition to the cell manufacturing facility, the company also announced the launch of Chervik - the company’s custom <keyword id="6711745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="battery-management-system" source="Orion">battery management system</keyword> (BMS). The company has claimed that the indigenously developed BMS offers high safety and reliability for high-power applications. Charvik integrates the electronic voltage controller (EVC), telematics, the slave BMS and the vehicle control unit (VCU) into a single motherboard, which it says will make packaging easy. Fintech unicorn Incred logs Rs 109 cr profit in FY23, revenue up over 77%

The dip in mortgage rates coincided with sinking bond yields, as investors piled back into US Treasurys after <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/bond-market-treasury-collapse-sell-investors-pain-credit-wall-street-2023-10">weeks of volatility</a> that saw the benchmark 10-year bond yield jump past 5% for the first time since 2007. "Last week's decrease in rates was driven by the U.S. Treasury's issuance update, the Fed striking a dovish tone in the November FOMC statement, and data indicating a slower job market," according to Joel Kan, the MBA's vice president and deputy chief economist. Mortgage refinancing applications, meanwhile, increased 2% on the week, though they remained 7% lower than the same time in 2022. Moreover, over 43% of India’s working population is either anxious, depressed or isolated, says the report which surveyed 13,000 workers living across 12 Asian countries. “The Mental Health Index score for India is 64, indicating that the mental health of employees there is strained despite being 1.6 points higher than the median,” the report said. An index over 80 is considered optional while a figure between 50 and 79 is considered ‘strained’ and anything below that is considered distressed. <div type="image" title="Untitled_Artwork (4)" msid="103664890" hostid="261"></div> The mental health of Indians is keeping over half of them – 53% – from performing effectively at work. And over 45% say that they find it more difficult concentrating on work than they did last year. Mental health problems can result in low employee engagement, absenteeism and presenteeism, and increased turnover. The most prevalent mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, are estimated to cost the global economy $1 trillion per year in reduced productivity. <div type="image" title="Untitled_Artwork (3)" msid="103664918" hostid="261"></div> Emergency fund &amp; inner peace It’s not just work-related exhaustion and burnout that’s troubling to the working age population of Asian nations. As many as 33% of Indians surveyed said that they have an emergency fund to cover over three months of essential expenses – and a similar percentage said that they can get by with their funds for two months. While 21% intend to start one in the current year, 8% believe they can get by on credit without an emergency fund. Under 40s are 50% more likely than over 50s to feel mentally and or physically exhausted at the end of their workday – indicating that the older group of employees are handling work much better than their younger colleagues.

Your mileage may vary, but I'm always keeping up on the latest on "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/cool-things-to-know-about-the-great-british-baking-show-trivia">The Great British Bake Off</a>" and looking for my next showstopper.Inspired by a recent episode of the Amazon show "Julia," this year I pulled out my piping bags and attempted my first Bûche de Noël, or Yule log cake, based on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/julia-child-surprising-facts-2020-8">Julia Child</a> recipe.Despite my cooking chops, having worked in various kitchens and a bakery over the years, I found the classic French recipe challenging. My results were not as precise as I'd hoped — but, as you can expect with an icon like Julia, the flavors were delicious, and everyone who tried it seemed to love it.Before coming to Business Insider, one of the many service industry jobs I had was as the front-of-house manager of a bakery. While I wasn't up with our full-time back-of-house bakers at 5 a.m. prepping doughs and frostings, one of my main responsibilities in the trendy cupcake eatery was to handle what we called "second bake" when inventory was low and we needed a refresh of our top sellers.That summer, I baked cupcakes and bread puddings, loaded up piping bags, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/dispute-over-rainbow-cake-goes-viral-on-tiktok-2023-4">frosted and decorated cakes</a>, and generally fell in love with baking. My family all gets down in the kitchen, and I'd worked in fast casual dining before, so I was no stranger to cooking at that point — but that's the year pastries became part of my repertoire.Since then, I regularly challenge my baking skills with breads, bars, pies, and cookies. I generally avoid tricky laminated doughs that make iconic treats like croissants, but I feel comfortable tackling most cakes. Her original televised version of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/michelin-star-chefs-favorite-christmas-desserts-holiday-desserts-2020-12">Bûche de Noël recipe</a> featured spun sugar moss and meringue mushrooms atop the orange-flavored cake and chocolate frosting.Over the years, the master French chef released several versions of the recipes used for her cake and frosting in this festive holiday creation. I, realizing I couldn't find exactly the version she used when she aired the original episode in season 3 of "The French Chef," used a slightly modified version from a cooking blog following along with the recipes from one of Julia's later books, "From Julia Child's Kitchen."I chose to take on the meringue mushrooms, but since the cake would travel nearly two hours by car with me to attend a holiday party at work, I omitted the spun sugar moss.<div type="image" title="A chocolate frosting inside an orange cake being rolled into a log shape." height="3024" width="4032" msid="106236725" hostid="261" sizebytes="574106"></div>I've made multiple recipes from Julia's triumphant "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ina-garten-and-julia-child-beef-bourguignon-compared-2022-1">Mastering the Art of French Cooking</a>" series and am always amazed at how the flavors evolve as you go through the prescribed steps. This cake was no exception.When I first pulled it from the oven, carefully turning it onto a piece of parchment paper, my partner and I tasted a few of the crumbled edges and the flavor was nothing special. The texture was a little unusual, too.Grainy, I think he called it. (He definitely did, I remember, just like I remember anything that could be considered even remotely negative that anyone says about my cooking.)I was worried I'd misread something or that the humidity in my beach town had messed with the bake, especially since my cake felt like it turned out very thin — but I once again put my faith in Julia's process and pushed on.<div type="image" title="An unfrosted yule log cake with a piece cut from it." height="3024" width="4032" msid="106236726" hostid="261" sizebytes="333992"></div>Rolling the iconic log shape was easier with the large, thin cake. I had worried about cracking, a common pitfall among rolled cakes, but my sponge was workable and moist enough to be shaped without splitting down the middle.I also worried the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/which-chocolate-frosting-is-best-taste-test-2017-10">chocolate frosting</a> I made had too loose a texture (which, to be fair, it probably did because I mistakenly grabbed half and half instead of full-fat whipping cream at the store).With less fat in the cream, the frosting didn't whip up as fluffy as it could have or as quickly as it typically would, but with a little extra cocoa powder and time in the fridge, it turned out the right consistency. It was 8:30 p.m., and I'd already been baking for over an hour and a half, making my way through a recipe with more than forty steps.To make little mushrooms to adorn the log cake, I piped rows of half-dollar-sized circles and stalks made of pieces that were meant to stand upright on their own. I hadn't worked with a piping bag in a while and was quickly frustrated that my skills weren't as sharp as my bakery days.When piping the mushroom shapes, I found the sticky texture of my meringue difficult to work with and was worried they wouldn't turn out right. But somehow, as tends to happen with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/julie-powell-julie-and-julia-author-dies-2022-11">Julia's guidance</a> — no matter how much I doubt her — when I pulled them from the oven, the meringues turned out fluffy and light, melting perfectly in my mouth.<div type="image" title="A messy kitchen sink full of dishes." height="3024" width="4032" msid="106236729" hostid="261" sizebytes="853430"></div>By the time I was done baking, I'd spent just over two hours puttering about the kitchen, dirtying every small bowl in the house, both the electric and stand mixer, piping bags and tips, measuring cups and spoons, a sifter, multiple baking sheets, mixing bowls, saucepans, a double boiler, and a candy thermometer.My sink was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/should-you-rinse-dishes-before-putting-them-in-dishwasher-2018-5">filled with dishes</a>; I'd spilled powdered sugar and cocoa on the counter, and frosting splattered across the stove. Still, I was left with the same warm feeling of accomplishment I usually experience when I've completed one of Julia's recipes.I trimmed the edges of the rolled cake before starting the decorating and shared the bonus bites with my partner — after the cake had rested and rolled with the frosting inside, the sponge was no longer grainy. I assembled my mushrooms with small globs of frosting to act as glue and dusted them with cocoa powder, then I raked the cake's outer layer with a fork to mimic the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/realistic-illusion-cakes-bust-cakes-2020-7">texture of bark</a> and gave it a little powdered sugar snow on top.Unfortunately, the Bûche de Noël, or log of Christmas, is intended to look like a festive tree branch — so it wasn't much to look at, even with the tedious little mushrooms.<div type="image" title="A yule log decorated with meringue mushrooms with a slice cut out of it." height="3024" width="4032" msid="106236731" hostid="261" sizebytes="798922"></div>Still, my colleagues gave me a huge thumbs up.Together, they spent a few moments working to identify the orange flavor in the sponge, and the consensus was that it turned out beautifully.While there were things I'd change if I made it a second time, I'd be willing to give this extensive recipe another go, and there was not one crumb or meringue mushroom cap left over.
