US launches 50 cruise missiles at Syria over chemical attack

At this year's Google I/O developers' conference, Google has highlighted a lot of features launching on Google services including Photos, Maps and others that could deliver a more immediate impact to users' daily lives. The keynote that started with the mantra "Building a more helpful Google for everyone" also provided glimpses and far-out technologies arriving soon. Starting your car with your phone to searching your screenshots using Google Lens, here are few updates from the conference that may help users make their lives easier. The company said that they are working with car manufacturers to develop a new digital car key in Android 12 This feature will enable users to use their phone to lock, unlock and even start the car -- and in some cases, you won't even need to take it out of your pocket. Android 12 includes the biggest design change since 2014. Google rethought the entire experience, from the colours to the shapes, light and motion and made it easier to access some of the most used features. To invoke Google Assistant, long-press the power button, swipe down to view your new notification shade, an at-a-glance view of all your app notifications in one place. And to make it easier to access everything you need, Google Pay and Device Controls have been added to the user's customisable quick settings. On top of the new design changes, the company has also launched a new Privacy Dashboard, giving users easy access to their permissions settings, visibility into what data is being accessed and the ability to revoke permissions on the spot. With the new update, Google Lens can now automatically translate texts in screenshots for devices running Android 11 or above. Users can now take a screenshot of a foreign language and let Google Lens do the translation without any intermediate step. The translate button will become visible on the screenshot and a click on it will detect and translate the required text quickly. Google is also updating the Translate filter in Lens, making it easy to copy, listen to or search translated text in over 100 languages. He grudgingly endorsed mask-wearing, a public-health measure universally embraced in every country that's quashing the virus! In the fool-me-once, fool-me-twice count, we're long past triple digits with Trump, yet naturally some of his allies are treating his one day of sobriety as a presidential vindication. He has reset the presidency. Yet we all know Trump is not a good enough actor to stay in character as a regular president. Bad news repels him; grievance fuels him; lying soothes him. He has the attention span of a flea, and the ego of, well, Donald Trump. It's just a matter of time before he returns to his base condition. So how long will that be? Can he make it till the weekend — four full briefings — without returning to his grievance-drenched, COVID-minimizing, poll-obsessed, Biden-slapping state of nature? Could he make it two weeks? Does anyone think he can make it longer? — DPThe GOP is living in a fantasy land<div type="image" title="Trump, McConell" height="748" width="1495" msid="77115599" hostid="261"></div>On Monday, reports began flowing out about what the GOP will propose in the next <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> relief bill. They all indicate that the party is delusional, as I wrote in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-trump-coronavirus-relief-bill-us-economy-fantasy-land-2020-7">my column</a> on Tuesday. Here's what's floating around.<ul><li>There's no money for cash strapped states, aside from funds that can only be used to reopen schools.</li><li>The future of the extra $600 a week on unemployment benefits is completely uncertain.</li><li>There's nothing for frontline workers.</li><li>There's a payroll tax cut that will mostly benefit the top 20% of workers.</li><li>And there's a sweet deal for employers, removing their liability if an employee gets sick at their job.</li></ul>In short, those who have money and employment get help. Those who don't, do not.These measures are less generous than what the GOP proposed when the country was seeing 12,000 coronavirus cases a day — and now the country is seeing 65,000. States are beginning to shut down again. Reading this proposal, though, you'd think the pandemic was over and that jobs were coming back. Obviously, we know that's not the case.This proposal won't add certainty to the economy — the kind of confidence that lets people know they'll be supported and encourages them to spend. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-portland-secret-police-force-border-patrol-homeland-security-2020-7">NYT has a breathtaking</a> (in a bad way) report of the GOP caucus meeting on the bill, and it seems some members think that even the meager package I outlined above is too much.Here's a quote from GOP Sen. <keyword id="161182" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rand-Paul">Rand Paul</keyword>:"I just walked out of a meeting that could be sort of a Bernie bros, progressive caucus...I'm alarmed that we're talking about spending another trillion dollars we don't have."We absolutely do have a trillion dollars to spend on this. Oregon's Attorney General says the federal invasion violates the Constitution, and has sued to stop the mystery detentions. No federal interest was being threatened by the protests before the arrival of the feds. The Homeland was not made Insecure by them. All evidence suggests the federal forces have escalated tensions and provoked more unrest — taking a series of peaceful nightly demonstrations and turning them into tense confrontations. That may be what President Trump wants, because he believes it will help his reelection campaign, but to repeat, it is not what any of Oregon's public officials or Oregon's citizens want. There is no sign Americans outside Oregon want it either. Imagine the situation reversed. Imagine a Democratic president sending masked feds to tear gas an antiabortion rally in Fort Worth. Republicans would be halfway through impeachment already! Today's silence from Republicans who are usually so loud about state's rights is deeply demoralizing. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/portland-senator-wyden-says-trump-will-deploy-federal-agents-elsewhere-2020-7">Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden asks in Insider</a>: "Where are the Senate Republicans who preach state rights and freedoms as Trump sends paramilitary forces into cities uninvited and tramples on the Constitution?" — DPThe Wayfair conspiracy theory isn't just crazy. It's wasteful. Conspiracy theories are the locusts of modern American life — they're destructive, they're everywhere, crush one and there are still 1,000 more. They're also costly for society, because they waste resources that should be spent on improving the world. This week has brought us two horrifying examples of this. Roy Den Hollander, an anti-feminist lawyer, seems to have <a href="https://www.insider.com/man-dressed-fedex-shooting-son-husband-esther-salas-new-jersey-2020-7">killed the son of federal judge Esther Salas</a>, then killed himself. Even before he committed this monstrous act, Hollander was despoiling life for his fellow Americans by filing stupid lawsuit after stupid lawsuit — attacking ladies nights at nightclubs, women's studies classes at universities, the Violence Against Women Act. These lawsuits wasted time and money for everyone involved, for no significant purpose. Also this week, the National Human Trafficking Hotline<a href="https://www.insider.com/wayfair-human-trafficking-conspiracy-theory-national-hotline-call-2020-7">has been flooded with calls</a> from poor deluded souls in the thrall of a nutball conspiracy that the online retailer Wayfair is selling children by disguising them as pillows. AP Images / Business InsiderNorth Korea attempted to fire a missile Sunday on the anniversary of its founding, but it blew up within seconds.While its missile program may be the shadowiest on earth, it's possible that US cyber warriors may be the reason behind the failed launch.A <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/04/world/asia/north-korea-missile-program-sabotage.html?smid=tw-share" target="_blank">recent New York Times report</a> uncovered a secret operation to derail North Korea's nuclear-missile program that has been raging for at least three years.Essentially, the report attributes North Korea's high rate of failure with Russian-designed missiles to US meddling in the country's missile software and networks.Though North Korea's missile infrastructure lacks the competence of Russia's, Russians using the same type of missiles achieved a 13% failure rate, while North Korean attempts failed a whopping 88% of the time, according to the report.But to those in the know, the campaign against North Korea came as no surprise. <a href="http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/about/experts/list/kenneth-geers" target="_blank">Dr. Ken Geers</a>, a cybersecurity expert for <a href="https://www.comodo.com/" target="_blank">Comodo</a> with experience in the NSA, told Business Insider that cyberoperations like the one against North Korea are actually the norm.While the fact that the US hacked another country's missile program may be shocking to some, "within military intelligence spaces this is what they do," Geers said. "If you think that war is possible with a given state, you're going to be trying to prepare the battle space for conflict. In the internet age, that means hacking."North Korea's internal networks are fiercely insulated and not connect to the larger internet, however, which poses a challenge for hackers in the US, but Geers said it's "absolutely not the case" that computers need to connect to the internet to be hacked.A <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/03/06/trump-putin-and-the-new-cold-war" target="_blank">recent report on Russian hacking</a> in The New Yorker detailed one case in which Russia gained access to a NATO computer network in 1996 by placing bugged thumb drives for sale in local shops near a NATO base in Kabul, Afghanistan. NATO operators bought the thumb drives, used them on the network, and just like that, the Russians were in.Reuters"That's where SIGINT (signals intelligence) or COMINT (communications intelligence) comes into collaboration with HUMINT (human intelligence)," said Geers, who described the present moment as the "golden age of espionage," as cyberwarfare remains nonlethal, unattributable, and almost completely unpunished.But the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-tested-four-more-ballistic-missiles-2017-3" target="_blank">recent missile salvo from North Korea</a> suggests that even a prolonged, sophisticated cyberattack can't fully derail North Korea's nuclear-missile program."Imagine you're the president - North Korea is a human-rights abuser and an exporter of dangerous technology," Geers said.
