These countries have imposed a COVID-19 lockdown again as cases continue to rise

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Daniel George got a job at Google X with a six-figure salary after finishing his doctoral studies.</li><li>He put most of his income in tax-advantaged accounts or invested it in stocks.</li></ul>This is an as-told-to story with <a target="_blank" href="https://drhackernomad.com/">Daniel George</a>, a startup founder and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan7geo">former vice president</a> at JPMorgan. This transcript has been edited for clarity and length. George provided documents to verify his finances.The first time I thought about retiring early, I was 24. I'd just gotten a job at Google X after a summer internship. My starting total compensation would be $265,000 a year.I did the math and realized that after a couple of years of saving I could easily go back to India and retire if I wanted to.Before working at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-layoff-moonshot-x-development-sergey-brin-larry-page-astro-2023-01">Google X</a>, I was a Ph.D. student at the University of Illinois in Champaign. I finished my Ph.D. in December 2018 with $100,000 in savings. Throughout my doctorate I'd received money from fellowships and awards, as well as a six figure-income working part time for tech companies, including my internship at Google.I'd begun cautiously investing in several tech stocks, including Google, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/apple">Apple</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/amazon">Amazon</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nvda-stock">Nvidia</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a>, only putting a few thousand dollars in each.Most of my money went into my bank account, earning little interest. I didn't know much about finance and was afraid to invest too much.<h2>Google changed my perspective on savings</h2>Working for Google X was my dream job. It was like working in a magical fairyland. There was unlimited food and drinks and amazing facilities, including ping-pong tables, video-game rooms, soccer fields, a gym, tennis courts, and free massages in the office.I immediately accepted the full-time offer in August 2018 to start as a Google X employee, moving into a shared apartment in Mountain View, California.After a year at Google, I started teaching myself more about finances and taxes. I was making more money than ever before but paying nearly 50% in taxes.<h2>I taught myself about retirement accounts like Roth IRAs</h2>I first learned how to optimize my retirement accounts to minimize my tax liability.Everyone should max out their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-is-401k">401(k)</a>; this means investing as much money as possible into your retirement accounts. This is about $20,000 a year in the US plus how much your company matches.After you reach this limit, you can use the "mega backdoor Roth 401(k)" strategy at some companies to put an additional after-tax income into an 401(k) account and roll it to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-is-roth-401k">Roth 401(k)</a>.Apart from 401(k)s, you can contribute $6,500 into an IRA and immediately convert it into a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-is-roth-ira">Roth IRA</a> by using the "backdoor Roth IRA" strategy to bypass the income restrictions that typically prevent high earners from contributing to Roth IRAs.If you have a qualified health-insurance plan, you can also contribute over $4,000 each year to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-to-use-health-savings-account-hsa-investing-retirement">health savings account</a>. Doing so has three advantages: The money gets deducted from your taxable income, it grows tax-free from when you invest it, and it is tax-free when you finally withdraw it.<h2>I put much of my income in tax-advantaged accounts and stocks</h2>While working at Google, I spent less than 10% of my income on expenses.I walked or biked to work, so I never bought a car. I ate three meals daily at Google, so I rarely paid for food. Even though housing is usually very expensive in Silicon Valley, my rent was quite low because I was splitting an apartment with my friends.Many people I knew bought expensive cars or houses, but I decided to invest most of my earnings. The more I saved early on, the longer my money had to grow and compound exponentially. I could always move to low-cost-of-living cities and buy a much nicer house later. I was still having a great time at Google and never felt like I was sacrificing my quality of life.I invested over $75,000 yearly into the tax-advantaged accounts and even more in my regular stockbroker accounts.<h2>I could've retired to my home country, India, by 26</h2>By 2020, at age 26, I knew that I could retire and move home to India if I wanted to.There's a rule of thumb in the FIRE community — which stands for financial independence, retire early — that you can retire when you're spending less than 4% of your net investments each year, or 3% if you're very young. I had over $500,000 invested, enough to afford to move using that rule. However, I had just started dating my future wife, an AI scientist at Google X who was American. I knew I'd need to save much more to retire early and be able to live in the US with her.<div type="image" title="Daniel George proposed to his wife in front of the Taj Mahal." height="1024" width="963" msid="106766210" hostid="261" sizebytes="53680"></div><h2>I was becoming more interested in investing when JPMorgan reached out to me</h2>In early 2020, a few friends and I started a side project developing machine-learning algorithms that automatically trade stocks. We deployed it, and my investments doubled in four months. On the back of this success, I became increasingly obsessed with finance, trading, and investing.In June 2020, a JPMorgan recruiter offered me an opportunity to lead applied AI projects across the firm. I took the job, as I was excited to learn as much as possible about finance. My total compensation also doubled.Even as my income and net worth increased, I still wasn't living extravagantly, other than eating out for every meal because I didn't want to cook. My only possessions were clothes, a mattress, a bed, and a 65-inch TV.<h2>Working remotely meant my wife and I could travel</h2>In 2020, after months of lockdowns, my wife and I were tired of being trapped in our apartments. We could travel anywhere since our jobs had become fully remote, so we started traveling at the end of 2020 when our lease was up.We've been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-in-hotel-full-time-cheaper-rent-credit-card-points-2023-12">living in hotels full time</a> all around the world since, staying in each city for two to three weeks.I got rid of all my possessions except for a few clothes, toiletries, a laptop, a phone, and a charger, which all fit inside one small backpack.<div type="image" title="A man stood in front of Machu Picchu" height="1600" width="900" msid="106766211" hostid="261" sizebytes="342170"></div>At 27, I had reached my first million dollars in savings. My stock portfolio had done well, and I'd been investing all my paychecks and the large bonuses of 70% of my base salary from JPMorgan.In 2022, we traveled so much that I was outside the US for 11 months, thereby <a target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/substantial-presence-test">qualifying as a US nonresident</a>. This meant I could sell all my stocks, without paying US capital-gains taxes.By early 2023, at 29, my net worth had grown. I knew I could safely retire and live anywhere since I spent only 2% of my investments a year.<h2>I thought I'd be bored as a retiree</h2>I thought about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I considered not working and traveling full time, but that would be boring.I was passionate about working on AI. This is the most exciting time to be working in this field, and I believe AI will have more impact in the next decade than anything else. I wanted to continue participating in it but do it on my terms.So I left JPMorgan in August 2023 at age 29 and cofounded an AI startup with some friends. Now that I never need to worry about earning a salary, I can afford to risk starting my own company.Eventually, when my wife and I decide to settle down and potentially have kids, I'm confident that all our investments will earn enough passive income to meet our family expenses. Because I invested early, I won't have to worry later.

I invested enough money to retire at 29. I don't ever need to worry about earning a salary again.

<ul><li>Earlier this month, a 42-year old journalist Pandurang Raikar succumbed to COVID-19 in Pune <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/pune-journalist-death-covid-19-hospital-payment-delay-6579975/">after the hospital delayed admission</a> over advance payment. </li><li>There have been many cases where even affluent patients have failed to find space in hospitals. </li><li>The benefits of the lockdown i.e. adding beds before <keyword id="6418348" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infections">infections</keyword> spike have fallen short of the requirement. </li></ul>Harshad Sanghvi, a builder from Ghatkopar, couldn’t get admitted to a hospital after suffering from a heart attack at 7.30 pm on 11 September. The reason was simple — there were no empty ICU beds, <a href="https://mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/mumbai/cover-story/builder-suffers-heart-attack-struggles-to-get-icu-bed-for-7-hrs/amp_articleshow/78096685.cms?__twitter_impression=true">reported Mumbai Mirror. </a> Soon after he had the stroke, his family rushed to Zen Hospital in Chembur, where the doctors suggested he had contracted COVID-19. His family was advised to admit him to a COVID-19 dedicated hospital. After struggling for around 7 hours, they were finally able to get a hospital bed. Sanghvi was among the lucky ones who could get a bed. However, in the past few months, there have been numerous reports of people dying because of lack of ICU beds. Earlier this month, a 42-year old journalist Pandurang Raikar succumbed to COVID-19 in Pune <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/pune-journalist-death-covid-19-hospital-payment-delay-6579975/">after the hospital delayed admission</a> over advance payment. Pune has registered over one lakh coronavirus cases, and is fast emerging as the newest epicentre of coronavirus in India. “All this while, Pandurang was feeling uneasy and breathless and required urgent hospital admission. However, the hospital refused to admit him. They asked him to pay Rs 40,000 as advance fees. They told him that it will take a while to make the payment as other patients were in the queue,” Kunal Jaykar, <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/pune-journalist-death-covid-19-hospital-payment-delay-6579975/">a close relative, told the media. </a> For the last 14 days, India has reported more than 1000 deaths. Every single day <div type="image" title="Flourish" msid="78142959" hostid="261"></div>The Indian government, on September 16, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/63k-icu-beds-33k-ventilators-available/articleshow/78137810.cms">told Parliament</a> that there are 62,979 intensive care unit (ICU) beds and 32,862 ventilators available in COVID-19 dedicated government and private health facilities across the country. Maharashtra has the maximum number of ICU beds at 14,447, followed by Tamil Nadu, which has 8,439 ICU beds. However, the situation on-ground suggests they may not be enough. Mumbai, the only city in the country to have registered more than 4 lakh coronavirus cases, <a href="https://science.thewire.in/health/mumbai-covid-19-hospital-beds/">ran out of beds in May</a> when it had only 25,000 coronavirus cases. As of September 12, only 6% of ICU beds in Mumbai are available, according to an IIFL report dated September 14. New Delhi — which has 28,641 active coronavirus cases — is also facing a shortage of ICU beds. The Kejriwal government has 2,201 ICU beds for COVID-19 patients against a population of over two crore. Only 35% of the ICU beds are available in Delhi currently, according to the IIFL report. The Delhi government recently asked private hospitals to reserve 80% of the hospital beds for coronavirus patients. It <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/mumbai-hospitals-run-out-of-beds-for-critical-covid-patients-6407221/">had only 4,750 beds for severely ill COVID-19 patients. </a> Poor bed availability is an issue that has plagued India <div type="image" title="BCCL" msid="78142993" hostid="261"></div> India is the second-worst hit COVID-19 country in the world and has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/indias-covid-19-number-crosses-5-million-mark-and-last-one-million-cases-in-just-11-days/articleshow/78139916.cms">registered over 5 million cases </a>with 80,000 deaths so far. Over the past few days, India has been adding over 90,000 coronavirus cases daily, the highest any country has ever recorded globally. The crucial reason for the shortage of beds and other glaring concerns is India’s lower health budget. For several years, India had been spending less than 2% of its GDP on healthcare, making it one of the lowest investors in the sector globally. Notably, Brazil, Russia, South Africa spend about 8.3%, 7.1%, and 8.8% in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/why-indias-health-budget-needs-more-infusion/articleshow/70082859.cms">the public healthcare sector respectively. </a>The World Health Organisation in 2019 placed India’s healthcare spending behind Iraq and Venezuela. Between 2014 and 2017, India’s bed per population ratio changed by merely 0.60%. Also, there are regional disparities at every level. For instance, urban hospitals in India <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/why-indias-public-health-facilities-may-suffer-despite-a-likely-rise-in-health-spending/">have more beds than rural hospitals</a>, according to the National Health Profile. There’s a lack of oxygen cylinders and medical staff too. “With the country working round-the-clock to expand COVID-19 care facilities, the increase in the number of ICU beds will facilitate the early transfer of severe cases to ICU and faster action on severe cases. Apart from increasing the number of ICU beds, the training and skill development of the staff and crew set to work on COVID cases is very important, Dr Hardik Ajmera, Deputy Medical Director, Saifee Hospital, told Business Insider. . India’s surging COVID-19 infections is testing the health infra once again — beds added during lockdown aren’t enough

A top UK scientist has said that a <keyword id="9960883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="second-nationwide-lockdown">second nationwide lockdown</keyword> was a possibility in the face of a worsening situation of the ongoing <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic. In a <keyword id="2751544" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="BBC-interview">BBC interview</keyword> on Sunday, Peter Horby, chair of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag) and a government adviser, said the UK was at a "precarious point" as Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions have continued to increase. He said the "critical mission" now was to protect the NHS to avoid non-essential hospital services being cancelled, as many were when the UK went into its first nationwide lockdown in March. "We really need to provide care to everybody - those with Covid-19 and those without. The way to do that is to keep the numbers down," the scientist said. He warned that some hospitals in the north of England were already coming under pressure and it might not be long before intensive care beds fill up. "I am afraid we are going to have to make some very difficult choices and act very quickly," Horby told the BBC, adding that the country must accept more stringent measures to lower the virus transmission. The scientist's remarks came a day ahead of Prime Minister <keyword id="6380867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="boris-johnson">Boris Johnson</keyword>'s announcement to imposed tougher local restrictions in the wake of the spike in the number of fresh cases. In a statement to MPs, Johnson will outline plans for a three-tier system, where each region in England will be placed into a tier based on the severity of the Covid-19 situation. It is expected that parts of the north of England and the Midlands will be placed under tougher measures as part of the Prime Minister's announcement, the BBC reported. Liverpool, where there are currently 600 cases per 100,000 people, is expected to be placed under the most severe set of restrictions, with all the city's pubs forced to close. Pubs and restaurants across Scotland have shut for at least two weeks. On Sunday, 12,872 new cases and 65 fatalities were reported in the UK, which increased the overall tally and death toll to 606,447 and 42,915, respectively. New Delhi, May 2 () Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra on Saturday said he will again request the government to allow national campers undergo outdoor training inside the country's major sports centres during the coronavirus-forced lockdown. Batra said the IOA had earlier requested the government in this regard but was not successful in eliciting a positive response. Some athletes at the NIS-Patiala had also written to the Sports Ministry to allow outdoor training by observing government's social distancing guidelines. "We have made some efforts trying to convince MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) to allow the athletes to train outdoors with all the social distancing guidelines. The campers at the NIS, at Bengaluru SAI Centre and SAI Kolkata have not been able to have outdoor training," Batra said. "I don't know whether they will be allowed in the next two weeks of lockdown. But I am once again trying on Sunday with the government," he said while addressing onine the Special General Body Meeting of Athletics Federation of India. He also offered his good offices to intervene on any issue relating to the extension of tenure of the coaches and High Performance Directors of various National Sports Federations. Batra even suggested the AFI to consider extending the contracts of the coaches till the 2022 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. "Please take a decision on the extension of contracts of High Performance Directors or coaches. Let me know if I can be of any help. I will intervene whenever required and try to sort out the issue (with sports ministry). "I think in some sports the Asian Games or the Commonwealth Games are 2024 Olympics qualification events or will offer ranking points for qualification. So, federations can even think of that on the extension of contract of coaches," he added. Batra lauded the AFI's efforts to raise the profile of the country's athletics. Multiple states in India have announced night curfews and weekend lockdowns in the past few weeks. Delhi has been put under a full lockdown till April 26. But lockdowns might not be enough. The government has started off with weekend lockdowns and curfews but that may not be enough to reign in this wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Central directives may be required soon in States like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, etc. States like Maharashtra and Delhi would also require longer lockdowns to break the chain. But that, alone, won’t be enough. The lockdowns will need to ensure the affected get the best treatment possible to contain mortalities. The governments will need to focus on infrastructure improvement, for now, and later, for critical things like testing, oxygen supply, essential drugs and ICU beds, which have all crumbled under pressure this time. All this would require much longer than a couple of weeks to bring down the active cases from the current two million-plus to where they stood 60 days back at around 135,000. Second, the centre and states will collectively need to focus on enhancing capacities for the vaccination supply chain as it opens for all adults from May 1. A successful campaign will also require steps to remove hesitations around inoculation through large-scale strategic behavioral change in communication. Such efforts in many pockets will need to be door-to-door, as was the case during the Polio vaccination. Above all, the lockdowns will need to be used to enhance our surveillance and data analytics capacity, allowing us to understand the key indicators better, have strong prediction models ready and be prepared for the next wave.

New Delhi, Apr 23 () Markets regulator Sebi has again extended the deadline to apply for the post of 147 senior level executives by more than a month till May 31 amid the ongoing nationwide lockdown to tackle the coronavirus pandemic. On March 7, the regulator had invited applications for these positions as part of its plan to beef up its headcount for faster and more effective execution of its job. The application window, which was opened from March 7-23, was extended till April 30, 2020. Now, it has been again extended till May 31, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in fresh notice. "Due to the lockdown announced by government of India, the last date of online application and governance payment of fees has been revised," it added. The nationwide lockdown has been extended till May 3. A total of 147 vacancies were notified for Officer Grade A (Assistant Manager) by the markets watchdog to hire legal as well as IT experts, researchers, and other officials for general administration. The applications were invited for 80 posts of Assistant Manager for general stream, 34 posts for research stream and 22 vacancies for Information Technology department. In addition, it invited applications for engineering and official language streams. For applying to general stream, the incumbent needs to have a master's degree in any discipline or bachelor's degree in law or engineering. Last month, the regulator had also revised the examination dates for these posts. The phase I and phase II examinations had been rescheduled to July 4 and August 3, respectively. Earlier, the examinations for phase I and phase II were scheduled for April 12 and May 3, respectively. Sebi has been easing several compliance requirements for listed companies in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in imposition of certain restrictions, including those related to travel.
