The Facebook-owned messaging platform now has plans to roll out fingerprint authentication for in its Android 2.19.3 update.

 What’s concerning is that the new update, if unable to detect your fingerprint, will allow the device to tap into the fingerprint credentials stored on your phone — albeit after your consent. It may sound like the process is being made more ‘convenient’ but it essentially means that WhatsApp will be picking up your biometric data from your phone. While WhatsApp has a done a good job of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-india-needs-from-whatsapp-might-not-be-so-easily-attainable/articleshow/65497255.cms">standing up</a> to the Indian government by refusing to give out user data because of its end-to-end encryption, its parent company — Facebook — hasn’t been that lucky <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/miscellaneous/facebook-endured-a-staggering-number-of-scandals-and-controversies-in-2018-here-they-all-are/slidelist/67185624.cms">having to face</a> a US Congressional Committee. Even India is considering new regulations that will allow it to ask technology companies like WhatsApp to break end-to-end encryption in an attempt to filter out ‘unlawful content’. Even that was subtly put to rest when WhatsApp’s data backup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/whatsapp-data-may-shift-to-the-cloud-but-may-no-longer-be-as-encrypted/articleshow/65475359.cms">shifted to cloud</a>, no longer necessitating end-to-end encryption of communication. More security or more vulnerability The fingerprint authentication feature is being presented as an extra layer of security on WhatsApp accounts. And, in its simplest definition, it is. But just like you trust a bank when you deposit your money, you have to trust WhatsApp when sharing any more information about your identity than you already do. And, at the end of day, it’s not WhatsApp that seems to be the issue but the fact that it’s owned by Facebook — a fact many forget as they claim to block Facebook on their phones and shut down their accounts. Data collection is a reality of the 21st century yet its implications have never been fully embraced. Not to mention that fingerprints have become as easy to steal as passwords. Logic states that your fingerprint is unique to you. So when you try to use them to log in anywhere, the computer knows that it’s you trying to gain access. But it’s only unique as long as nobody else manages to make a copy. In 2014, hackers working for the Chinese government and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/24/world/asia/hackers-took-fingerprints-of-5-6-million-us-workers-government-says.html">made off</a> with the personal data of more than 22 million Americans from the Office of Personnel Management — 5.6 million of those people had their fingerprints on file. Researchers at the Michigan State University were able to <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">print out</a> fake 3D fingerprints for less than $500. More tech-savvy researcher in Tokyo were able to <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/01/12/peace-sign-selfies-could-let-hackers-copy-fingerprints/">reconstruct a fingerprint</a> based on somebody posing with the ‘peace sign’ fingers on a photo taken from a distance of nine feet. Michigan State University’s Philip Bontrager told <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">USA Today</a>, “These experiments demonstrate the need for multi-factor authentication and should be a wake-up call for device manufacturers about the implications of artificial fingerprint attacks.” Facebook has been facing privacy issues since 2003 and is under pressure to prove its credibility as the world’s waits to see whether it upholds the standards set by Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Facebook’s trifles with privacy started out by leaking user data to online advertisers to help them understand their consumers — seemingly innocent in retrospect. The Overall passenger vehicles (PV) dispatches from automakers to dealers rose to 10,74,189 units in July-September 2023-24, up 4.7% from 10,26,309 units in the same period of 2022-23. It is also the first time ever that the domestic PV wholesales have crossed the 20 lakh mark in the first half (April-September) period of any financial year. "The sales growth in the PV segment is being fuelled by strong demand for the utility and sports utility vehicles. The vertical is now accounting for around 60% of the overall sales," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President <keyword id="230167" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vinod-aggarwal" source="Orion">Vinod Aggarwal</keyword> told reporters here. Sales of entry level cars however continue to dip, he added. The entry level car wholesales dropped to 35,000 units in the second quarter as compared to the peak of 1.38 lakh cars in July-September 2018-19, Aggarwal said. Similar trend is there in the entry level two-wheeler segment with rural demand yet to pick up fully, he added. In the first six months of the fiscal, total PV wholesales rose to 20,70,163 units from 19,36,804 units. Aggarwal said passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and commercial vehicle segments continued to witness growth in the second quarter of 2023-24, although two-wheeler wholesale numbers posted a marginal de-growth, compared to the same period of last year. Total two-wheeler dispatches declined to 45,98,442 units in July-September 2023 as against 46,73,931 units in the year-ago period. Commercial vehicle dispatches rose to 2,47,929 units from 2,31,991 units in the year-ago period. Total three-wheeler wholesales surged to record 1,95,215 units in the second quarter as compared with 1,20,319 units in the same period last fiscal. In the September quarter, overall sales rose to 61,16,091 units from 60,52,739 units in the second quarter of 2022-23. "As we get into the festival season, all segments of the industry are optimistic and look towards posting good numbers in Q3 as well," Aggarwal said. This growth in the automobile sectors can be attributed to the all-round economic growth of the country, which is also enabled through the conducive government policies, he added. In September, PV dispatches increased by 2% year-on-year to 3,61,717 units as compared with 3,55,043 units in September 2022. Similarly, two-wheeler sales increased to 17,49,794 units last month from 17,35,199 units in the year-ago period, SIAM said. The next-generation anti-radiation missiles have already been tested by the Indian Air Force from its Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft fleet and can destroy enemy radar locations during conflicts, they said. The NGARM can be fired from IAF fighters like the Sukhoi-30 and the Mirage-2000. It is accurate and has been developed with the capability to even track a radar system even if it is not operating. They are central for logging into email accounts, authenticating new memberships, or just signing into Amazon on a new device. Understandably, when smartphone users in India saw that OTPs weren’t coming in anymore, they were upset. The transition has been less than smooth to say the least, with companies may not have registered in time getting locked out. The government’s new process is designed to curb spam and fraud messages. Using a blockchain-based solution, telecom operators can now verify commercial messages and their source using a template for such communication. Unregistered messages, which do not follow the template, will be blocked as potential fraud. New Delhi, Mar 20 () Industry body CII on Friday pressed for a fiscal stimulus of Rs 2 lakh crore besides a slew of tax cuts and reduction in interest rates to combat the impact of coronavirus on the industry as well as the economy.Business is going to see a huge amount of disruption, CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said, adding sectors like real estate, aviation, tourism, and aggregators are witnessing maximum stress due to coronavirus-induced slowdown and supply chain issues.In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CII said the government may consider a fiscal stimulus of Rs 2 lakh crore, which is 1 per cent of the GDP, to be given to the needy citizens through Aadhaar-based Direct Benefit Transfer. An amount of Rs 5,000 for each individual, especially the rural and urban poor and Rs 10,000 for the most vulnerable section - the elderly. "Our plea for more fiscal space is really directed to lessen that economic fear of individuals, give money into the hands of people by direct benefit transfer in a mechanism which will really help people get money, to those who are less privileged in the society," Banerjee told .The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has also appealed to senior executives to explore ways to take pay cuts to meet the cost challenges.The industry body has decided to take certain proactive steps at this stage which will need to be scaled up and revisited as the pandemic progresses. "For one, we are asking all our members to explore possibilities of all blue-collar employees and contract labourers we have engaged at our factories and service lines. We also firmly believe that we as senior top brass in our firms should explore ways to take pay cuts to meet cost challenges," CII said in the letter.It also sought easing the cost of capital, which is currently under wide volatility. The government may consider removing Long Term Capital Gains tax of 10 per cent and fixing the total Dividend Distribution Tax at 25 per cent.Moreover, CII has suggested that GST payments should be on collection of bills rather than on raising of invoices. This will help avoid liquidity getting locked in case there are delays in payments, it said.It also recommended a reduction of 50 basis points in Cash Reserve Ration (CRR) as well as in repo rate to ensure that banks have liquidity to lend to industry.It said the RBI may consider relaxing the NPA recognition norms from 90 days to 180 days till September 30, 2020 to provide relief to industry faced with payment issues as well as pressure on banks to classify loans as NPAs."These immediate measures will help industry and economy manage the economic impact and also help the banking sector tide over the stress of NPAs due to delayed debt servicing arising out of disruptions in business operations especially of SMEs," said CII.
