Around 75 % of <keyword id="20593458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-users" source="keywords">UPI users</keyword> will stop using it if any transaction charge is levied on the service, a survey by LocalCircles said today. The survey found that 38% of users make over 50% of their payment transactions via <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> instead of debit, credit, or any other form of digital transaction. "Only 22 % UPI users surveyed are willing to bear a <keyword id="20813527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="transaction-fee" source="keywords">transaction fee</keyword> on payments, 75% of respondents stated that they will stop using UPI if a transaction fee is introduced," the survey said. The survey comprising three broad areas, claims to have received 42,000 responses from 308 districts but the number of replies on each question varied. The questions regarding transaction fee on UPI received 15,598 responses. The <keyword id="19907219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Payments-Corporation-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Payments Corporation of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Payments Corporation of India">National Payments Corporation of India</keyword> (NPCI) posted a record 57% rise in the volume of transactions and 44% rise in value in the 2023-24 fiscal year, compared to the previous fiscal year. For the first time UPI transactions crossed 100 billion and closed at 131 billion in a financial year, compared to 84 billion in 2022-23. In value terms, it touched Rs 199.89 trillion, compared to Rs 139.1 trillion, the report said. The survey found 37 % of respondents shared UPI transaction accounts for more than 50 % of their total payment in value terms. "With UPI rapidly becoming an integral part of nearly 4 in 10 consumers, there is strong resistance to any kind of direct or indirect transaction charges being imposed. As per a survey conducted by LocalCircles, 34% of the respondents (one in three people) are planning to watch a movie in the cinema hall or multiplex in the next 60 days. LocalCircles, which has regularly conducted the ‘Citizen pulse on Cinema Halls’ survey since October 2020 to understand expected footfalls during the pandemic and thereafter, reported that the percentage of citizens likely to visit a cinema hall/ multiplex has increased by 150% in the last year. There has also been an increase from December 2021 in the number of people planning to visit the cinemas at least once, and those planning to visit the cinemas multiple times. “The data comparison shows that as against 2% of respondents who indicated plans to go multiple times in December 2021, the percentage has risen to 6%. In the next category of those planning to visit once, the difference is much bigger at 28% in Jan 2023 as against 12% in December 2021,” added LocalCircles. Percentage of citizens likely to visit cinemas increased by 150%: LocalCircles survey

About 32 per cent mobile service subscribers do not have coverage for the majority of their day despite paying for 4G/5G services and 69 per cent of those surveyed are facing call connection and drop issues daily, a report has said. Only 26 per cent of mobile services subscribers said their home has good voice coverage for all the existing operators while 5 per cent said their workplace has good voice coverage for all the three operators, according to <keyword id="6379818" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="localcircles" source="Orion">LocalCircles</keyword>. About 20 per cent subscribers face connectivity issues for over 50 per cent of their voice calls. The <keyword id="30356" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="telecom-regulatory-authority-of-india" source="Orion">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6356988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai" source="Orion">TRAI</keyword>) had called a meeting with mobile phone operators on February 17 to discuss the quality of wireline and wireless services. The meeting will discuss how to improve the quality of <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword> services. LocalCircles shared with TRAI the findings of its survey on 5G services, including that only 16 per cent of mobile subscribers, who had switched to 5G, have indicated an improvement in call connection and drop issues. TRAI said that 5G infrastructure will take time and will be 15-20 times by the end of 2023. Alarmed at the rising pesky mobile calls and text messages by telemarketers, the <keyword id="30356" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="telecom-regulatory-authority-of-india" source="Orion">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (TRAI) on Thursday directed all telecom service providers to reverify registered headers and message templates on distributed ledger technologies (<keyword id="4388846" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dlt" source="Orion">DLT</keyword>) platform and block all unverified headers and message templates within 30 and 60 days, respectively. In a new directive, the telecom regulator said that the mobile operators need to ensure that temporary headers are deactivated immediately after the time duration for which such headers were created. TRAI issued new directions to providers to stop the misuse of headers and message templates and curb unauthorised promotions using telecom resources. The telecom regulator told the mobile operators to remove confusion among recipients of messages and prevent their misuse and no look-alike headers (headers which are similar by virtue of a combination of small case or large case letters) are to be registered by <keyword id="16550150" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="access-providers" source="Orion">access providers</keyword> in names of different principal entities. "Access providers have been directed to bar all telemarketers, who are not registered on the DLT platform from handling the message template scrubbing and delivery of messages to recipients through Access Providers' network," read the TRAI note. It directed mobile operators to take action against erring telemarketers as per the provisions of the regulations and also initiate actions as per relevant legal laws. All the telecom service providers have been directed to comply with the above directions within 30 days. Earlier this week, a survey revealed that two in three Indians get three or more pesky calls every day and 50 per cent of them said such calls originate from the personal number of people. According to <keyword id="6379818" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="localcircles" source="Orion">LocalCircles</keyword> which conducted the survey, 45 per cent of people get on average 3-5 pesky calls each day while 16 per cent claimed to get 6-10 such calls per day. Around 60 per cent received most calls related to "selling financial services", 18 per cent got most calls related to "selling real estate" while 10 per cent received most calls "offering a job/earnings opportunity." TRAI has called a meeting with mobile phone operators on February 17 to discuss the quality of wireline and wireless services. The meeting will discuss potential "measures and action plan to improve the quality of service (QoS), review the current QoS standards, QoS for 5G services, and unsolicited commercial communications". TRAI in 2022 had released a consultation paper on the mandatory implementation of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) in telecommunication networks which are designed to display the name of the caller (even if the receiver has not saved the same on their device/SIM) on the receiver's screen when the call connects. However, complaints from consumers continued to rise and unsolicited communications is something people have been regularly discussing about, according to LocalCircles. Chennai, Oct 15 (PTI) Budget and safety seems to be the top criteria for households in Chennai during the coming festive season, a study conducted by a leading community social media platform LocalCircles has revealed. Sixty per cent of the households have opted for "budget and value" while shopping during the festive season while 40 per cent backed 'safety', the study said. More than 24,000 responses were received from over 9,000 households across the city. As many as 40 per cent of the residents have said that they would like to visit the stores physically to buy, while 30 per cent responded saying that they would like to have stores have their catalogue online to order for delivery. According to the study, 60 per cent of Chennai households will shop this festive season and are likely to do so by ordering online and via local stores for home delivery. Smartphones and consumer electronics emerged among the big ticket purchase, with 48 per cent of the households opting for the two categories, while 26 per cent preferred white goods and appliances. Nearly 33 per cent of the respondents said they would buy groceries and fruits, while 22 per cent said they would buy dry fruits, traditional sweets, bakery items, the study said. About 39 per cent of the people have said they would buy apparel or clothes, while 20 per cent preferred for cosmetics and fragrances. Nearly 19 per cent said they would spend on shoes, bags. LocalCircles said it reaches out to household consumers two-three times a year. The government is set to allow drug manufacturers to increase the ceiling prices of around 900 scheduled drugs (medicines), in line with the change in the annual Wholesale Price Index (WPI). As per the drug price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the annual change in WPI in 2022 is 12.12% and thus the drug prices too could see a similar hike. <a href="https://scroll.in/latest/1046450/essential-medicines-to-get-costlier-by-up-to-12-from-april-1">Reports </a>state that this is the highest-ever hike allowed. As per the LocalCircles survey, 58% of respondents observed a price hike in the last 12 months in regularly-purchased medicines. For most of the respondents, the price increase has been significant i.e. over 20%. On an aggregate basis, 89% of respondents experienced a significant price increase in the specialised medicines category while 57% experienced a significant price increase in the general medicine category as well i.e. medicines for fever, cough, headache, eye drops, vitamins, etc. Moreover, it’s not just allopathic medicines which became costlier – 2% of respondents pointed to price increases in Ayurveda and Homoeopathic medicines as well, revealed the survey. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Customers want a cap on trade margins" comment="subhead2" text="Customers want a cap on trade margins">Customers want a cap on trade margins</cmsannotation> The survey respondents raised concerns over the huge gap between the medicine selling price and the MRP (maximum retail price) and 55% of respondents asked for a 50% cap on trade margins while 21% asked for a 100% cap on trade margins. “People feel that at least with a cap on trade margin the MRPs will become more realistic and many consumers who currently may be subject to overcharging may end up paying a more reasonable price for the medicines,” stated LocalCircles. As per the survey, 56% of respondents indicated that the MRP of medicines regularly taken by them or their family members has risen in the last 12 months. 8% of the respondents observed a hike of 50% or more in MRP. LocalCircles survey received over 34,000 responses from consumers located in 323 districts of India. 46% of the respondents were from Tier 1 cities, 30% were from Tier 2 and 24% were from Tier 3 and 4 districts.
