Although it hurts most retailers, there are ways to curtail it – in the same way the TVC suggested. The trick lies in creating an exciting customer experience through hi-tech tools, hands-on product experience and personalised services. In brief, retailers must understand consumer interests and expectations in a bid to develop curated experience for all. And a well-aligned, multi-channel approach (Web, mobile, tab and physical store) is the way to win today’s consumers who love convenience over everything else.

Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Waitrose have had big success with local convenience stores, which have less choice but are open longer.Morrisons says in today's statement:In March 2015, Morrisons announced a review of the M local business. That review concluded that M local would have required significant further investment in new sites, plus additional capital expenditure and lease commitments, to reach profitability. Sears and Kmart just closed nearly 80 stores - see if your local store is on the list

The company said "the decision to close a Target store is not made lightly" and the stores that are being shut down have suffered several years of decreasing profitability. Some employees will be given the choice of transferring to another store, the company said. The stores will close on January 30, 2016.Some customers are launching online campaigns to save their stores, including one for a store in New Ulm, Minnesota. "The closing of this store hits us hard, a shock to us all," one supporter wrote on a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/884604884959123/">Facebook group</a> devoted to saving the New Ulm store. The off-price home goods retailer listed the addresses of these locations in court filings on Wednesday, saying that they are expected to begin closing on June 1. Tuesday Morning said in a court filing that the locations were selected because they were underperforming or located too close to another store in its portfolio. The retailer still needs bankruptcy court approval to begin closing sales, and locations could be added or removed from the list. In the <a href="https://ir.tuesdaymorning.com/news-releases/news-release-details/tuesday-morning-corporation-files-chapter-11-pursue-financial">press release</a> announcing its bankruptcy, Tuesday Morning CEO Steve Becker specifically mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic as contributiong to the business' struggles. Tuesday Morning temporarily closed all of its locations and furloughed most of its 9,000 employees in March. It does not have an e-commerce business, making the temporary <keyword id="7490183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="store-closures">store closures</keyword> particularly devastating. "I still can't believe that Shah Rukh Khan made an ad for my store," says a local garment owner. “The small stores around us deserve to have a Happy Diwali," says Shahrukh Khan, who has indeed become India's biggest brand ambassador as he represents SMBs of all kinds this year. That's created areas of the US where the combined company could sell off or close stores.Among the areas of overlap are store networks in the metro areas of Washington DC, Chicago, and Los Angeles, according to a map of locations that the companies provided in an investor presentation about the deal. Eliminating stores in those locations is one way that Kroger and Albertsons could cut costs as a combined company, he added.<h2>Albertsons and Kroger have grown through similar acquisitions</h2>Both companies have histories of growing through acquisition.Kroger, founded in 1883, began expanding beyond its home city of Cincinnati in the 1950s with acquisitions of chains in Texas and Wisconsin. In the 1980s, it acquired Kansas-based grocer Dillon Companies, which bolstered its presence in Western states. Since then, it's filled out its national presence by acquiring Pacific Northwest grocer Fred Meyer in 1998 and Harris Teeter in 2013.Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons has followed a similar path of acquisitions and deals over the last few decades. One of the highest-profile came in 2015 when Albertsons acquired Safeway. At the time, Albertsons was owned by Cerberus Capital Management. In order to get federal approval for their merger, Albertsons and Safeway had to sell just under 150 to another grocery chain.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>President Barack Obama and his teenaged daughters, Sasha and Malia, went to an independent book store in Washington to buy books as a way to promote Small Business Saturday, an event aimed at boosting small businesses.
"Do I get a discount for that?" the president asked jokingly while unloading a bunch of books from his shopping basket at the <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">Politics</keyword> and Prose book store on Saturday.
"Maybe a neighbor's discount," the clerk joked back.
It is not clear whether Obama would have taken the discount, if offered.
The first family shopped at the same bookstore last year.
On Saturday, Obama was met by a mostly cheery crowd of shoppers and got a round of applause when a baby earned a presidential selfie.
Over the clicking of cameras and flashes of smart-phones, one shopper yelled: "When are you going to close Guantanamo?"
"We're working on it," the president replied. "Any other issues?"
Started in 2010 by credit card company American Express, Small Business Saturday comes on the Saturday after Thanksgiving Day, to encourage people to spend their holiday shopping dollars at small businesses.
It is the Black Friday for mom-and-pop shops that has become an annual tradition and has gained momentum, spawning "shop local" movements in communities across the country.
Last year, shoppers spent about $5.7 billion at small companies on Small Business Saturday, according to a joint survey by National Federation of Independent Business and American Express.
