The company's PAT (profit after tax) stood at Rs 930 crore. Notably, without this windfall gain, Paytm's finances would still be in red, with the company racking up losses worth Rs 415 crore. Paytm was in red in the year-ago period as well, incurring losses worth Rs 290.5 crore. This windfall profit also improved Paytm's EBITDA by Rs 388 crore on a QoQ basis. The company's revenue also saw a slight uptick of 10.5% quarterly to Rs 1,659 crore, as opposed to Rs 1,501 crore in the previous quarter. But on a year-on-year basis, Paytm's revenue dipped significantly by 34%. The company also announced that it has entered into a DLG (<keyword id="23641220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Default-Loss-Guarantee" source="keywords">default loss guarantee</keyword>) model for its merchant loans of about Rs 225 crore with SMFG India Credit. Under this arrangement, Paytm will be first in line to take a hit in case of a loss that emerges from borrowers defaulting or skipping their payments. "Following the regulatory framework and the emerging market practice, we see increased willingness from lenders to partner and allocate more capital in the default loss. The DLG model will help to increase disbursements with the existing partners and expand partnerships with new lenders for the loan distribution,” said the company in its earnings release today. The company's revenue from its payment business also inched up 9% on a quarterly basis, along with its revenue from <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, which also grew by 34% QoQ. At present, Paytm's total merchant subscriptions stand at 1.12 crore, with the company garnering 3 lakh new merchants during the quarter. During the previous quarter, Paytm's <keyword id="20253122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gross-merchandise-value" source="keywords">gross merchandise value</keyword> (GMV) also inched up by 5% on a sequential basis, which experts anticipate will continue in the coming quarters, just as India braces for the festive season. Per its release, Paytm aims to achieve <keyword id="23641219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA-profitability" source="keywords">EBITDA profitability</keyword> (before ESOPs) by the fourth quarter of this financial year. However, investors remained unimpressed with Paytm's performance, with its share slipping by around 3.96% during the day to trade at Rs 697.20. The stock has a YTD (yield-to-date) of 7.91% during the year.

But the worst hit will be non-bank players as they will be hit on both asset and the liability sides. While they will have to pay higher rates while borrowing from banks and bond markets, they will also have to pass on higher costs to borrowers. This will slow down the rapid growth in their balance sheet, which has been driven by rapid growth in the disbursement of unsecured personal/consumer loans. According to analysts, non banking finance companies like Paytm and Bajaj Finance would be most affected by RBI’s move to tighten capital norms on unsecured loans and also loans disbursed to non banks. This will not only make lending more expensive for non banks but in many cases will also force them to raise more capital ahead of schedule. <keyword id="116253" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sbi-cards" source="Orion">SBI Cards</keyword>, Bajaj Finance, IIFL and Aditya Birla have relatively higher proportion of unsecured loans on their portfolio and, therefore, tighter capital norms will impact them the most. Unsecured personal loans account for 37% of Bajaj Finance’s loan book, while it is 21% for Aditya Birla Capital and it is 27% for IIFL (standalone), according to Jefferies. According to Jefferies, SBI Cards can see an estimated.400 basis points cut in its Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio while Bajaj Finance can see 220 basis point hair cut to Tier 1 CAR. However, both NBFCs are well capitalised and have higher return on equity (low capital consumption). “IIFL (standalone entity) and Aditya Birla Capital can see a 50-80 bps haircut to Tier 1 capital, which can lower their Tier 1 to 13%/15%. IIFL may need to infuse capital in the standalone entity; at ABFL, next phase of capital raise may get advanced,” the global investment bank said in a report. in funding costs. SBI Cards faces highest drag on Tier I CAR and highest dependence on bank-funding. The tighter norms will not impact NBFCs but even fintechs like Paytm. Loan disbursals by fintechs will also slow down from the current levels as they may find it hard to raise funds and even pass on higher cost loans to consumers. Japanese investment bank Nomura says in a report, that in the past 18 months, nearly 25%-30% of incremental growth for NBFCs has come from unsecured retail. Any moderation in unsecured credit for NBFCs will hence have an impact on both growth and profitability for NBFCs in our view. Moreover, the regulatory action comes at a time when credit costs in these segments have started to inch up. For Paytm's lending partners, higher funding costs and increased capital requirements will affect product profitability in the buy-now-pay-later and personal loans segments. Non bank lenders like private banks may also start to improve their underwriting standards after this which will impact overall growth. Jefferies says: “We also watch out for the pricing environment and ability of Paytm to pass-through hike in funding costs. In our base case earnings, we forecast consumer loan disbursal growth to normalise from 90% in FY24 to 40% in FY25 and 35% in FY26. Any additional 10 percentage point slower disbursal growth (vs. base case) in FY25/26E can lead to 5-10% impact on lending revenues and ~2-3% impact on overall contributions, which may impact break-even timelines as well. The company attributed the growth to GMV growth, device additions, and growth in the financial services distribution business. Since its IPO, when the company went public, it for the first full year EBITDA before ESOP profitability of Rs 559 crore, its earnings results released Wednesday showed. In the January-March quarter, however, Paytm reported a revenue of Rs 2,267 crore, a modest decline of 3 per cent year-on-year. "In Q4 FY 2024, we had lower marketing spends, as we paused most of the user growth spending in the month of February and March. We expect to reinvest in these areas in the coming financial year," Paytm informed stock exchanges. "While we experienced a financial impact in Q4 due to the above disruptions, the full financial impact will be seen in Q1 FY 2025." Paytm says it is confident of seeing meaningful improvement starting from Q2 2024-25, based on restarting certain paused products and achieving steady growth in operating metrics. In Q1 of the current fiscal, its focus will be on acquiring new merchants, reactivation of inactive merchants, and redeployment of devices from inactive merchants to new merchants. "While there will be a smaller net addition of device merchants in Q1 FY 2025, we expect net additions to improve from thereon and recover to past trendlines by Q3 FY 2025." Its revenue from payment services were up 26 per cent to Rs 6,235 crore; net payment margin was up 50 per cent to Rs 2,955 crore; gross merchandise value (GMV) up 39 per cent to Rs 18.3 lakh crore. Merchant paying subscriptions for devices have reached 1.07 crore as of March 2024, an increase of 39 lakh. Revenue from financial services and others up 30 per cent to Rs 2,004 crore; value of loans distributed was up 48 per cent to Rs 52,390 crore. Further, Paytm said that the active rate and per device subscription revenue has been impacted. Merchant subscription revenue in Q4 was Rs 90 per device per month and it expects it to bottom out at Rs 80 in Q1, post which it should increase towards Rs 100 by Q4 of the current fiscal. "We continue to address our merchants' needs through innovative product launches and are backed by a large distribution and service network. We recently launched two more "Made in India" soundboxes which are customized to the needs of our merchants, with louder speakers and longer battery life." Paytm registers 25% growth in revenue at ₹9,978 crore in 2023-24

Digital payments and services app <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="keywords">Paytm</keyword> is working and will continue to work as usual even after February 29, its CEO <keyword id="20004114" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="keywords">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> said on Friday. The founder and CEO of One97 Communications Ltd (OCL), which owns Paytm brand, on social media platform X said the company is committed to serving the nation in full compliance. "To every Paytmer, Your favourite app is working, will keep working beyond 29 February as usual," Sharma said. RBI has barred Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) from accepting deposits or top-ups in any customer account, prepaid instruments, wallets, and FASTags, among others after February 29, 2024. OCL holds a 49% stake in PPBL but classifies it as an associate of the company and not as a subsidiary. "I with every Paytm team member salute you for your relentless support. For every challenge, there is a solution and we are sincerely committed to serve our nation in full compliance. India will keep winning global accolades in payment innovation and inclusion in financial services - with PaytmKaro as the biggest champion of it," Sharma said. The Paytm top management during an earning call on Thursday said they are working on a migration plan for PPBL, wallet, FASTag etc users with other banks. The company sees the RBI order to have an impact of Rs 300-500 crore on its annual operational profit as its customers will not be able to add money to their wallets, FASTag etc. Separately, the company informed that its offline merchants network offering and device business like Paytm Soundbox, EDC, QR are not impacted by the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) direction to its associate bank. The fintech company will also continue onboarding merchants to its platform. "The Paytm Payment Gateway business (online merchants) will continue to offer payment solutions to its existing merchants. Other financial services such as loan distribution, insurance distribution and equity broking, are also not in any way related to Paytm's associate bank and are expected to be unaffected by this direction," the company said. Paytm said that the RBI order also does not impact user deposits in their savings accounts, wallets, FASTags and NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) accounts, and they can continue to use the existing balances. RBI has ordered PPBL to settle all pipeline transactions and nodal accounts (in respect of all transactions initiated on or before February 29, 2024) by March 15, 2024 and no further transactions would be permitted thereafter. Sharma during the call had said that RBI order is a "big speed bump" and shared that he could not understand the trigger for the move and he was not aware of the exact nuance that triggered the order. "On behalf of Paytm I can say it is more of a big speed bump but it is something that we believe that with partnership of other banks and capabilities that we have already developed, we will be able to see through in the next few days or quarters as the case will be," he had said.

The Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led company has reported that its pace of loan disbursals has increased from the previous quarter. At this rate, it would end up issuing loans worth ₹34,000 crore by the end of FY23, up from the ₹24,000 crore as estimated in the previous quarter. Despite a healthy growth in devices deployed, the gross merchandise value, or GMV – which is essentially the value of total transactions carried out through these devices – registered a relatively slower growth. Sequentially, on a per user basis, the GMV was barely up, too, with an increase of a meager 0.7%, down from the 8.2% surge reported in the previous quarter. Paytm reports an increase of over 21% in average loan ticket size

This move is expected to impact the capital buffers of these banks. According to analysts, these banks would be most impacted by the move as their capital ratios would be affected by 30-85 basis points. For banks the first line of defense against bad loans is CET Tier 1 capital or Common Equity Tier 1 capital (CET1), which is the highest quality of regulatory capital, as it absorbs losses immediately when they occur. According to Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the CET 1 impact would be maximum for RBL/HDFC Bank/ICICI Bank at 84 basis points/72 basis points/64 basis points. Among non banks, SBI Cards would be the most vulnerable with a 416bp impact on capital ratios. Capital buffers will have to be further strengthened by banks if they want to lend to consumers for unsecured loans. If a bank had to set aside say ₹20 for loans, it will now have to set aside 25% more for every unsecured loan it issues. Not just this the banks will have to set aside more capital if they want to lend to shadow banks or non banking financial institutions as well. When cost of capital increases, so will lending rates. In the years after the pandemic broke, unsecured personal loans to retail borrowers have been on a steady rise. Not just banks but even non banks have been merrily issuing such loans to borrowers, and in many cases these borrowers have multiple such loans used for consumption. From 12-14% these loans are now growing at 30% rate. The central bank has cracked down on some non banks for not adhering to norms while underwriting such small ticket loans. The red flags have been flying high for a while now. According to proprietary research done by UBS, borrowers with more than five personal loans rose from 1% in 2018 to 7.7% in March 2023. New disbursement of personal loans to borrowers with weaker credit profiles accounted for 22% of disbursements. Of all banks, UBS was of the view that state-owned banks and non banking financial companies had a much higher share of weak borrowers compared to private banks. Analysts believe that pressure on net interest margins and higher credit costs to impact earnings of banks and shadow banks over FY24 and FY25. Paytm, a fintech company, has recently built a large loan portfolio which is mostly comprised of personal loans. With the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> cracking down on these loans, the loan growth will be impacted for Paytm too. Deepak Shenoy, CEO of Capital Mind, took to social media to explain the impact, “See how it affects SBI cards: SBI Cards had credit card receivables of ₹ 45,000 crore with 23% capital adequacy ratio (CAR). So ₹10,500 cr in capital (23% of ₹45Kcr). Increase risk weight to 125% means ₹45K cr=₹56K cr risk weighted assets.” Shenoy explains that if “SBI Cards wants to grow, and keep high CARs (min is 15% I think?) they’ll need to raise capital and dilute. Which means for the same profit = higher capital. But definitely, credit is adding the flare of extra revenue and it will add to the net bps margin continuously,” said Sharma. Given the slowdown in corporate loans, banks have been chasing retail customers for loans. Such has been the rush to offer loans that top-ups are being offered even on auto loans which is just a camouflaged unsecured credit. For example, Suresh Chandra (name changed) had a ₹15 lakh car loan that had to be paid off in 12 months. Before he could repay his existing auto loan, he was being inundated by banks and NBFCs luring him into taking more loans. A large private bank offered him a top-up loan that’s akin to the value of his car, and another wanted to offer a loan that was 150% of the part of the loan that had already been paid off. “Sometimes I get tempted to take up on these offers. Also because technically auto loan interest is lower and they’re offering the top-ups at the same rate. If I need money, I will surely take this up instead of a new personal loan,” Chandra told Business Insider India. Giving a top-up loan is a good way for banks and NBFCs to push across new loans to borrowers. A top-up loan is an additional credit that’s given over and above an existing loan and when opting for a balance transfer. It doesn’t come with end-use restrictions and requires minimum documentation. Now, India’s central bank has cracked down on lenders to stall this aggressive loan push to consumers on Thursday by tightening capital norms. Not only has it classified top-up loans as unsecured loans, it also increased risk weight on unsecured loans like personal loans, credit card receivables, consumer credit and more such. It will make it tougher for them to give out loans as easily and freely to consumers. RBI puts up a ‘STOP’ sign Banks and NBFCs have been giving out too many unsecured loans. Unsecured retail loans have been growing at a 26% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) between FY18 to FY23, as per Nomura. In FY18, unsecured retail loans were 7.8% of bank credit and now they’re as high as 10.6%. All this has happened by chasing after consumers for loans. “We view this as a clear signal from the regulator that it wants to bring down the strong growth in these segments, which is being brought into effect by bringing about an increase in the effective cost of capital for lending to these segments,” says a report by Nomura. Experts say that RBI’s move will control the increasing delinquencies and high risks associated with lending in the unsecured loan segment. Due to increased risk weightage, lenders should have to cover for more credit risk in the unsecured loan segment and it will make lending more expensive. The loans will also turn more expensive for borrowers. “RBI has been cognizant of the high increase in unsecured lending and initial delinquency trends seen in the unsecured loan segment. While this might look like a small piece in the overall picture, the RBI is cautious enough to take an early step in controlling the same,” says Ameet Venkeshwar, chief business officer at LoanTap. The credit standards will also get tighter, experts hope. Most top banks offer personal loans at interest rates ranging between 10-26% depending on creditworthiness. These loans can go as high as ₹20 lakh and the minimum income limit has to be ₹30,000 to become eligible for such loans. Preeti Mishra, a professional from Mumbai has a similar story. “I swiped as much as ₹50,000 on my debit card to pay my child’s school fees. Immediately, I got a call from my bank offering to convert that payment into a loan which can be paid off in installments. Why would I want to take a loan which I can afford to pay?” she says. Like Chandra, she also says that it’s fairly tempting. “Even if I was in a tad bit of a money crunch, I would have taken up the loan. And, in the long run, it would have made it tougher for me,” she worries that one bad day she might actually fall into a trap. Sumanto Roy is one such who has fallen into it, and now swimming at the deep end. The 27-year-old earns ₹60,000 per month. He already has a car loan that takes away ₹10,000 per month, another ₹8,000 as EMI for his phone and another ₹12,000 goes off his bank account every month as his laptop EMI. If Roy wasn’t living with his parents, he would have found it very tough to get by with this loan burden. “It’s difficult to pay off my credit card bill every month. I roll it over by making the minimum payment. Now, I am saving and trying to pay off my dues as fast as possible,” he tells Business Insider India adding that the loan burden is distressing him personally. Will BNPL hold on? However, banks and NBFCs are one side of the aggressive loan push story. There is a rising number of Buy Now Pay Later startups, companies that integrate EMIs while checking out of e-commerce websites, and VC-funded startups that loan for people who borrow to go on a holiday or a date. Experts believe that RBI’s move might change the dynamics of some of these fintechs to some extent. Jefferies expects PayTm’s consumer loan disbursal growth to normalize from around 90% in FY24 to 40% in FY25 and 35% in FY26. “For Paytm's lending partners, higher funding costs and increased capital requirements will affect product profitability in BNPL/PL. They may respond by tightening credit standards and/or moderating growth from elevated levels right now,” Jefferies says. Giving loans is a good business in today’s world where GenZs, especially are focussed more on ‘experiences’, want to live the good life. On the other hand, the new-age apps advertise in a buzzing manner day in and day out with taglines like — ‘Download, pay your credit card bills and earn rewards’. The lure of loan was always there. At the end of the day, lenders are different when you take the loan, and when it’s the time to pay up. Sooner or later, they would want their pound of flesh right at the heart. India’s leading mobile payments and financial services firm <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>’s leadership in UPI merchant payments has helped it generate meaningful revenue. In its Q4FY23 results, the company revealed that it received UPI incentives from the government amounting to ₹49 crore during the quarter and ₹182 crore for the full financial year. The Union Cabinet in January approved the incentive scheme for promoting RuPay Debit Cards and low-value peer-to-merchant (P2M) UPI transactions. Paytm is the leader in UPI merchant payment transactions, and the UPI incentive received by the company has doubled from the previous fiscal’s ₹90 crore. Paytm UPI has been driving the country’s digital transaction volumes in recent years. The company’s rapid deployment of low-cost QR codes to cover every corner of India has brought underpenetrated merchant segments that once preferred cash-based payments into the digital payments fold. As of March 2023, the company had a registered merchant base of 3.35 crore. According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, its incentive scheme will also promote UPI Lite as user-friendly digital payment solutions and enable further deepening of digital payments in the country, across all sectors and segments of the population. As the pioneer of mobile and QR payments in India, Paytm was the first app to launch UPI Lite in India. Since its launch in February 2023, Paytm has enabled UPI Lite for more than 55 lakh users. Merchants and users prefer Paytm for UPI because of the company’s industry-best transaction success rates. UPI has also emerged as one of the key customer and merchant acquisition channels for Paytm.
