The <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> government's <keyword id="45077" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excise" source="Orion">excise</keyword> department is devising ways to dispose 70 lakh bottles of leftover <keyword id="6356212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquor" source="Orion">liquor</keyword> and to roll them over for sale under the current excise regime, officials said on Wednesday. The stock, also comprising wine and beer, is stored at warehouses as it could not be sold under <keyword id="570373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excise-policy" source="Orion">Excise Policy</keyword> 2021-22 that finally ended on August 31, they said. "There are over 35 lakh bottles of various spirit brands are registered under the current excise policy. Such brands can be sold through corporation vends," a senior government officer said. The remaining stock belongs to brands that are yet to be registered under the prevailing excise policy. "It is being explored how to dispose this stock of unregistered brands. One option is to register the brands concerned and sell them through the liquor vends. Another option is to destroy them," the officer said. Officials, however, said the government may allow sale of the unregistered brand bottles instead of destroying them. They cited an example from 2019 wherein the excise department had prepared a proposal seeking permission to sell liquor bottles seized during raids at 25 per cent less than their actual price, after proper testing, instead of destroying them. The Excise Policy 2021-22 that came into being from November 17, 2021, was withdrawn by the Delhi government following recommendation of a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in its implementation. The government then reverted to the excise policy that was in operation before November 17, 2021, by running liquor vends through its four undertakings- DTTDC, DSIIDC, <keyword id="1603215" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dscsc" source="Orion">DSCSC</keyword> and DCCWS- from September 1 this year. Officials said 518 licenses have been issued for liquor vends to the four corporations so far. A total of 406 vends have opened and 400 of them have started placing purchase orders for stock. The excise department has also registered nearly 650 brands of liquor. Officials said the left over stock could be sold at prices consistent with the current excise policy. A part of the stock comprises beer bottles of unregistered brands, that will be needed to be disposed soon as they can not be stored for long without proper refrigeration facilities, the officials added. Delhi is looking to roll over 70 lakh unsold liquor bottles to the current excise regime

<ul><li><keyword id="1445940" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smaaash" source="Orion">Smaaash</keyword> announced its “pre-mature” closure in September 2020 as the country was facing the worst of COVID-19 throughout the year.</li><li>The company — which was in over 45 centres across India in its first innings — is now settled with 22 centres across 14 cities.</li><li>It has stepped away from its traditional ‘for kids’ offering to reimagine itself as a business that caters to the needs of young adults and working professionals.</li></ul>After briefly shutting down its business nearly 18 months ago, popular Indian gaming and entertainment centre operator Smaaash has spent the last one year rebuilding itself. The Sachin Tendulkar-backed company — which now refers to its business model as Smaaash 2.0 — has stepped away from its traditional ‘for kids’ offering to reimagine itself as a business that caters to the needs of young adults and working professionals. The aim of the space is to give an entertainment center for adults, but with the same vibe as the local club. It claims to have an EBIDTA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) run rate of ₹4 crores at the store level, which is 20% higher than before. So what has changed since the last time? Smaaash — which has raised close to ₹700 crore from <keyword id="6354267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sachin-tendulkar" source="Orion">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword> and Sixth Sense Ventures — announced its closure in September 2020 as the country was facing the worst of COVID-19 throughout the year. The company did not have the runway to continue and there wasn’t enough footfall in the physical store. The company’s founder Shripal Morakhia, in an email to its employees, said he was sorry that despite his best efforts he has failed in his efforts to save the company from its “premature death”. However, Smaaash restarted its operations once again in Raipur and Vijayawada and built on top of that. The company had lost several prime locations it was previously operating in, so it decided to build on its latest network in alternative locations with larger and more open spaces. Shirish Kotmire, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Smaaash, believes that this offers them the opportunity to work in bigger and more open locations, at less the cost. Secondly, the company has also spent the last one year in reading customer behaviour and effectively enhancing the value per customer. The company has expanded virtual reality (VR) offerings by introducing new games and upgrading traditional games to VR as well. Besides, it has also introduced physical games like shooting. This, coupled with dining and beverages options, increases the time spent by the customers in Smaaash stores and the average cost per customer goes up too. The company had dine-in option earlier as well, but it now emphasises reading into customer behaviour and needs. “We are ensuring that we give an entire experience, where they [customers] graduate from playing just games to consuming food and liquor, to consuming time there. When you give them a gaming environment, combined with a food and gaming experience, and the pocket friendly nature, the time of the entire experience increases … We are really good at upselling now. Because it’s a gaming concept no one comes to have food-food,” Kotmire noted. How has Smaaash been strengthening itself? Smaaash started its rebuilding efforts in metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi, and then the letter grew in a conservative manner by focusing on cities that were less likely to face stricter COVID-19 norms. In the second phase it expanded to Raipur, Gwalior, Vijayawada, and Bhubaneswar. The company is now looking to expand with 23 more stores by mid-2022, where the deals are already signed and project-related work has begun. Kotmire explained that they are at a point when they are just getting re-noticed by the investors, but they need to reach a critical size with a three or four-digit revenue figure. “What is funding for? The funding is for scale. We are just doubling stores now, we are going back to our earlier level of 40-45 stores. They are saying what’s new [to fund],” Kotmire said, explaining that convincing an investor to fund an offline business takes a little more time in the current scenario. He emphaises that the confidence of its existing investors is also coming back due to its performance in the last couple of months. “In the same sequence that it closed down, in the same sequence it’s taking off in a big way,” Shirish Kotmire, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Smaaash, said. New Delhi, May 10 () Sitting on a liquor stockpile of around Rs 3,000 crore, restaurants and hotels across the country are asking state governments to allow them to sell the stock lying with them due to the coronavirus lockdown. "We are truly living in unprecedented times where on one hand we are sitting with expensive liquor inventory and on the other hand, we are cash starved," National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) President Anurag Katriar said. The industry sees a ray of hope as many states have permitted sales of retail alcohol. "We request every state government to allow us an opportunity to sell our liquor stocks, preferably through home delivery model. "This will help us deplete our stocks, raise some money to take care of urgent people needs and will still be compliant to social distancing norms. We understand that this may require some amendments to the law but I am sure it can be carried out under the current extraordinary circumstances," Katriar said. In similar vein, The Beer Cafe founder and CEO Rahul Singh said liquor sales in India take place through three licenced verticals -- retail, horeca (hotels, restaurants and catering) and canteen stores department. The total horeca licenced places are around 30,000 in the country and "at any given time, the stock in hand would be for 1 month. Which means that due to lockdown, the total unsold inventory lying at various horeca outlets across India would be around Rs 3,000 crore," he added. While retail sales of liquor are opening, the service industry continues to be in limbo, he said. "What we are asking the state governments is simple. All we are asking is to allow us to sell our stock on a temporary basis. We would like to sell our stock," Singh said. Every country in the world has done this and it is also needed to be done here, he added. "At least allow us to sell this stock that is with us of around Rs 3,000 crore and get liquidity to pay wages and government should make temporary amendments to the rules. It will also ease the queues at the retail outlets," he added. The Supreme Court had on May 8 asked states to consider non-direct contact or online sales and home delivery of liquor during the lockdown period to prevent the spread of coronavirus on account of crowding at the shops. "We expect the markets to stay narrow until emergence of greater evidence of growth recovery. Further, it would continue to watch out development over coronavirus. Thus, meanwhile, select sectors with better earnings visibility will continue enjoying valuation premium over the broader markets," said Siddhartha Khemka, Head - Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. Investors would also track global market cues amid the coronavirus outbreak. "Now since the budget, RBI policy and major corporate results are behind us, Indian bourses will henceforth try to adjust and assimilate the reality. Before making any meaningful strides, markets will absorb how these policy decisions have impacted corporates' underlying performance. "Going ahead, the overhang of coronavirus will largely drive the mood of the stocks in the short term," said Jimeet Modi, Founder &amp; CEO, SAMCO Securities &amp; StockNote. Last week, the Sensex surged 1,406.32 points or 3.53 per cent. "While the domestic sentiments are buoyant post an encouraging monetary policy, the threat to the global economic growth due to coronavirus spread may weigh on the sentiments," Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd said. Besides, key factors such as global crude oil movement and Indian rupee-US dollar trend would also influence trading. Delhi election results and coronavirus impact will be key drivers for markets this week, according to analysts

Lured by discounts and a growing range of spirits and perfumes stocked by operators, more Indian travellers are spending money at <keyword id="2941478" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="duty-free-stores">duty-free stores</keyword> in local <keyword id="43661" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="airports">airports</keyword> instead of overseas. 

	"There has been an upswing in Indian passport holders shopping at Indian duty-free areas," Anirban Dutta Chowdhury, India head of Zurich-based duty free retailer Nuance Group, told ET. 
 

	He said that the average contribution of Indians to total sales was 72% from 2008 to 2011 and now there has been an increase of 18%, taking it to 90% from 2012 to 2015 period. 
 

	The size of the duty-free market in India is about $500 million and will double to over $1 billion in the next 3-4 years, according to industry figure. 
 The experience of passing through an Indian international airport such as Delhi or Mumbai has changed and this could be the possible reason behind rise in sales, said <keyword id="353318" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Manishi-Sanwal">Manishi Sanwal</keyword>, managing director of <keyword id="2941479" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="DFS-India">DFS India</keyword>. 

	"Privatisation of airports, too, has led to a large-scale change in the business. Also, tastes and preferences of Indian travellers have changed. They are much more aware of the latest consumer brands, he said."
 

	Dutta Chowdhury of Nuance, which operates stores at Mumbai and Bengaluru airports, said the largest chunk of duty-free shoppers — about 50% — buy liquor. About 15% buy chocolates, 13% buy perfumes and the rest go for souvenirs, clothes and gadgets. 
 

	"Our global relationship with the brands helps us to launch the offerings at the same time as it would happen at any international duty-free airport," Chowdhury said. 
 <keyword id="1892045" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="DFS-Group">DFS Group</keyword>, which is majority owned by Moet Hennessy <keyword id="5940" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Louis-Vuitton">Louis Vuitton</keyword>, shifted to a 60,000 square foot area at Mumbai's new international Terminal T2 in February 2014. Its store at the previous Mumbai airport terminal covered a third of that area. According to Sanwal, gone are the days when whisky meant Jack Daniels and Chivas Regal for Indians. 

	"Nowadays, people demand brands such as Glenrothes, Glengoyne and Bruichladdich," he said, referring to increasing preference for a wide range of singlemalt whiskies. 
 

	Duty-free stores also offer discounts, the most popular being pre-orders, said Sanwal. The customer places an order before leaving for an overseas destination, which is delivered on his return at a 5%-10% discount. It's cheaper, saves the passenger from carrying extra luggage and reduces shopping time after an exhausting trip. 
 

	Chowdhury said fast growth in duty-free sales is at the Mumbai and Bengaluru airports.
