The <keyword id="68884" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="telangana" source="Orion">Telangana</keyword> government has increased the <keyword id="6356212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquor" source="Orion">liquor</keyword> prices by 20 to 25 per cent to mop up revenues. Prices of all brands of liquor were hiked and this is expected to help the government generate additional revenues of Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,000 crore annually. The state had earned Rs 30,000 crore from liquor sales in 2021-22 with the tax income reported at Rs 12,000 crore The authorities have increased the price of 1,000 ml liquor by Rs 120. The price has gone up to Rs 615 from Rs 495 earlier. The price of a quarter bottle has been hiked by Rs 20. On all types of beer, there was a minimum hike of Rs 10 per bottle. The new prices will come into effect from Thursday. The excise officials checked the liquor stocks at wine shops, bars and pubs on Wednesday night after the day's sales came to an end. The available stocks will be sold at new rates from Thursday. The liquor prices have been hiked for the first time since liquor policy 2021-23 came into effect. Liquor prices were last hiked in the state in May 2020 soon after the first phase of Covid-19 lockdown. This has come at a time when the state is facing a fund crunch to continue its welfare schemes as the Centre has tightened norms on loans and market borrowings. This is the latest in a series of measures taken by the state government to mop its revenues. It recently hiked market value of lands, property registration charges, bus fares and electricity charges. Telangana hikes liquor prices by 20-25% to increase state revenues

Hike in petrol prices may not have brought tears in the eyes of Delhiites, but here is another expected price rise that could certainly make many cry. The rates of liquor is likely to increase by 8 to 12% as the revised <keyword id="6356916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="excise-duty">excise duty</keyword> regime and increased retailers margin component on liquor, notified by the <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword>, would come into effect from Tuesday (July 1).
 

	In order to promote fair play and make the liquor trade look more profitable, the Delhi government has decided to increase the retailer's profit margin.
 As per the revised list, the retailer's profit margin component on <keyword id="6359860" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="beer">Beer</keyword>, <keyword id="2392253" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alcopop">Alcopop</keyword> has been increased from the existing 8% to 12% of wholesale price. The retailer's profit margin on <keyword id="6438859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-made-foreign-liquor">Indian Made Foreign Liquor</keyword> (IMFL) has been hiked from the existing 15-18% of the wholesale price. The retailer's profit margin on country liquor (Delhi Medium Liquor) has moved up from 3 to 6%. 

	The rates of beer have been increased by Rs 5 and Rs 20 per bottle and prices of IMFL have gone up by Rs 25 and Rs 40 per bottle.
 With the increase in rates, the <keyword id="2392251" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Department-of-Excise-Entertainment-Luxury-Tax">Department of Excise Entertainment &amp; Luxury Tax</keyword> aims to collect additional Rs 250 crore as it was unable to meet its revenue target of Rs 3,200 crore in the last financial year and earned revenue of Rs 3,151 crore. Liquor Prices To Shoot Up In Delhi From Today

The ban on the sale of liquor within 500 meters of highways in the country would mean a probable loss of Rs 50000 crore for several state governments. This, because a list of prominent hotel chains, like the Taj, Oberoi, Hyatt and Accor groups will now have to stop serving alcohol to guests at their premium locations, thus denting the 
estimated revenue of state governments, which they would have earned from these hotels in form of taxes.

Riyaaz Amlani, president of the National Restaurant Association of India (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/strategy/restaurant-body-fights-back-says-dont-eat-if-you-dont-want-to-pay/articleshow/56313066.cms">NRAI</a>), told ET that along with this loss to the governments, restaurants, bars and pubs will also be taking a hit of Rs 10,000-15,000 crore, and 100,000 people will be out of work.

However, as per a tweet by Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, the ban would impact jobs of around <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/1-million-people-to-lose-job-inindia-blame-drunken-driving-for-it/articleshow/57971679.cms">1 million people</a>. 
 
The country houses over a third of liquor outlets around national and state highways, which means that this ban would result in a deep impact on the liquor industry and state governments’ pockets.

In order to avoid this, some state administrations have even changed the nomenclature of state highways to district roads.

However, for some, the decision to make liquor stores essential was deeply serious. Christopher O'Hanlon, who works at a liquor store in New Jersey,<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/booze-sales-are-booming-as-liquor-stores-are-deemed-essential-2020-4"> told Business Insider</a> that he and others in the industry have a first-hand look at why it is crucial for their stores to stay open. "You don't want those people to quit cold turkey," O'Hanlon told Business Insider. "You don't want those people to flood hospitals because, unfortunately, at this stage, we don't have, there's not enough beds for them."In an <a href="https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/yes-liquor-stores-are-essential-businesses/">opinion piece in the Scientific American</a>, Max Jordan Nguemeni Tiako and Kelsey C. Priest explain that closing liquor stores could be catastrophic for people with alcohol use disorder (AUD). Withdrawal can be dangerous, especially at a time when hospitals and healthcare workers are stretched thin due to COVID-19. "Because so few people have access to medications for AUD, access to alcohol becomes a matter of life or death," Tiako and Priest write. "If alcohol is unavailable, particularly liquor, people may find alcohol from other unsafe sources, specifically non-beverage alcohol," such as rubbing alcohol, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, or car coolant.At the same time, O'Hanlon says, he worries that classifying stores at essential might put workers at risk of catching the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>. "We don't want people in hospital rooms because they're having withdrawal symptoms," O'Hanlon said. "We need to make sure their lives are protected as well. "Especially now when they're not driving, they're probably enjoying it a lot more responsibility than they were before." Delhi recorded <keyword id="6357824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sales" source="Orion">sales</keyword> of 24 lakh <keyword id="6356212" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liquor" source="Orion">liquor</keyword> <keyword id="6366595" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bottles" source="Orion">bottles</keyword> on <keyword id="495100" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-years-eve" source="Orion">New Year's Eve</keyword>, registering a nearly 18 per cent on-year growth from the corresponding date in 2022. According to official Excise department <keyword id="6355729" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data" source="Orion">data</keyword>, 3,99,60,509 (3.99 crore) liquor bottles were sold in December 2022 through a network of 520 shops. In December 2023, 4,97,80,240 (4.97 crore) bottles were sold from 635 vends. According to the data, 24,00,726 (24 lakh) liquor bottles were sold on New Year's Eve (December 31) -- the highest single-day sales during December 2023. December 31, 2022, witnessed sales of 20,30,664 (20.30 lakh) bottles -- also the highest single-day sales figure for that month. The second highest sales in December 2023 were recorded on Christmas Eve (December 24) when 19,42,717 (19.42 lakh) bottles were sold. On the same day in 2022, the data showed that 14,69,357 (14.69 lakh) bottles were sold. The data also showed that 17,79,379 (17.79 lakh) liquor bottles were sold on December 30, 2023, against 14,66,353 (14.66 lakh) on the same day in 2022. In 2023, the lowest sales were recorded on December 5 when 12,84,222 (12.84 lakh) bottles were sold against 13,81,531 (13.81 lakh) on the same day in 2022. In 2022, the lowest sales were seen on December 4, with 9,03,835 (9.03 lakh) bottles sold. Sales of liquor bottles breached the 10-lakh every day in December 2023.
