TikTok's 2 biggest stars confirmed their breakup with matching Instagram Stories after a diss track stoked cheating rumors

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Charli D'Amelio, who has over 148 million followers on TikTok, has released her debut single.</li><li>The song, titled "If You Ask Me To," is one of the first songs D'Amelio ever wrote and recorded.</li></ul><p>TikTok star Charli D'Amelio, 18, released her debut single titled "If You Ask Me To" on October 26 after teasing her interest in making music earlier this year.</p><p>D'Amelio, who has over <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@charlidamelio">148 million followers on TikTok</a>, was the most-followed person on the platform until she was <a href="https://www.insider.com/khaby-lame-tiktok-most-popular-creator-charli-damelio-2021-7">overtaken</a> by comedy creator Khaby Lame in June.</p><p>D'Amelio teased her interest in music in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m776DT9hq9c">trailer for season two</a> of "The D'Amelio Show," a Hulu reality show following her and her family, including her sister Dixie who is also a TikTok star and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-tiktok-star-dixie-damelio-music-business-making-be-happy-2020-7">launched her own music career in 2020</a>. </p><p>The clip, which was released in early September, showed D'Amelio saying she loves performing but wasn't yet ready "to tell Dixie about music" because it was "kind of her thing."</p><p>In a statement to Insider about her debut song, D'Amelio said, "I've always loved music and performing. Once my online following started growing I was able to showcase my passion for dance, but I felt that with so many other people entering the music space there wasn't room for me."</p><p>She added that she was encouraged by her dad, Marc D'Amelio, to pursue singing and with each session, her "love for the process grew."</p><p>D'Amelio told Insider that "If You Ask Me To" was one of the first songs she ever wrote and recorded but it immediately became her favorite.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9ZnhZcHEL88" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>"I tinkered with it and changed up some lyrics and production over the last several months and got it to a place that made me truly happy," she said in a statement.</p><p>The accompanying <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZnhZcHEL88">music video</a> was directed by Andrew Sandler who has worked with artists including Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande. TikTok mega-star Charli D'Amelio has released a debut single after teasing her interest in music, and fans seem impressed

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11930190" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="burger-king" source="Orion">Burger King</keyword> is dropping over 100 artificial dyes and flavorings from its menu.</li><li>The chain promoted its move away from some of these ingredients in a viral ad campaign last year.</li><li>Burger King is also releasing celebrity meal partnerships.</li></ul><p>Burger King just announced that it has banned 120 <keyword id="12062280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="artificial-ingredients" source="Orion">artificial ingredients</keyword> from its menus, including <keyword id="12062281" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="high-fructose-corn-syrup" source="Orion">High Fructose Corn Syrup</keyword> and several food dyes.</p><p>The move is a continuation of an earlier strategy to publicly distance Burger King from artificial dyes and preservatives, including a 2020 ad campaign featuring a time-lapse of a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burger-king-moldy-whopper-ad-campaign-showcases-no-preservatives-2020-2">Whopper growing old and moldy over time.</a> By that point, the chain had eliminated preservatives from European menus and in certain US markets. Burger King said all US Whoppers were preservative-free by the end of 2020.</p><p>"We know our guests' expectations are changing, and they want to make choices they can feel good about," Ellie Doty, Burger King North America CMO, said in a statement. James quote-retweeted the post, writing, "this is why 'I couldn't just let it go and stay out of it.'"</p><p>Both James and Rizzo have since deleted their posts, with Rizzo saying in a follow-up tweet that the Gomez and Wright families would handle the situation offline. </p><h2>Gomez has denied the allegations</h2><p>Gomez has since fully denied the allegations multiple times on YouTube and Instagram. Her business started last fall when TikTok began to surge in popularity and breakout stars like Addison Rae and Charli D'Amelio <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/viral/meet-charli-d-amelio-tiktok-s-newest-viral-teen-celebrity-n1092626">were starting to make headlines</a>.</p><p>"I was addicted to TikTok and I would sit and scroll for hours and hours," Bruening told Business Insider. "I saw the potential in the talent and the e-boy scene. Bruening said while she was there, she snuck into the TikTok Creator Lounge (which she didn't have access to) and networked with the creators. </p><p>"I convinced security I was somebody, when I was nobody," she said. "I went around and asked all these creators if I could take a five-minute photoshoot with them, and I wound up getting all their numbers and texting them the photos. I really needed those photos to be decent enough to get their number and connect with them for later stuff."</p><p>Her concert photography business ended after the coronavirus pandemic hit the US in March, and that's when she decided to focus full-time on TikTok portraits. </p><p>"I sat in my room and I studied light, I studied retouching, and how a studio functions," she said. "Just researching and doing everything that I could to figure out how fashion photography works." </p><p>By the end of May, Bruening had her first studio session with TikTok star Zieler, who had under 100,000 followers at the time. </p><p>"Eventually, I got to this point where Lil Huddy DM'd me and said, 'Hey, when are we shooting?'" she said. "A bunch of these really, really awesome people started having interest in me, and I think that was after I had done a shoot with <a href="https://www.instagram.com/luvanthony/?hl=en">luvanthony</a> and became connected with TalentX." </p><p>She makes money by charging her clients a fee per shoot (she declined to disclose her exact rates) and she plans to release Adobe Lightroom presets (or custom photo filters) soon, <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/11/influencers-are-now-monetizing-custom-photo-filters/575686/">which has become one popular way influencers make money from their followers</a>.</p><p>Clients will hire her to take fun photos of them for Instagram, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-influencer-merchandise-companies-for-youtube-tiktok-creators-2020-10">shoot promotional images of their merchandise</a>, or photos an influencer needs for a specific brand deal, she said. </p><p>Recently, Bruening has collaborated with 23-year-old fashion stylist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tabitharsanchez/?hl=en">Tabitha Sanchez</a>, and together they have worked on shoots for TikTok creators like Sienna Mae Gomez (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@siennamae?lang=en">7.9 million followers</a>), Larray (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@larrayeeee?lang=en">17.9 million followers</a>), and Willy Wonka TikTok (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@willywonkatiktok?lang=en">16 million followers</a>). Sanchez got her start styling TikTok influencers during quarantine, and she first connected with influencers by emailing their agents, <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/tik-tok-stylist-tabitha-sanchez-chase-hudson-lil-huddy">she told Vogue</a>. </p><p>If Bruening has one rule she hopes every creator follows it's to always tag the person's Instagram handle when you post an image they took or styled.</p><p>It's a "frustration in the community not to be properly credited," she said. "We found it really interesting because we are now dealing with sort of the premier Gen Z creator, who is defining the various pop culture trends for teenagers." </p><p>Hollywood talent agencies like WME and United Talent Agency - which represent the biggest movie stars and musicians - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-talent-agents-of-youtube-creators-influencers-uta-wme-caa-2019-11">have departments dedicated to working with digital creators across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and now TikTok.</a></p><p>UTA kicked off the TikTok star "frenzy" by signing Brittany Tomlinson (known as "Kombucha Girl" online) in late 2019. Then in January <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-star-charli-d-amelio-influencer-business-youtube-tour-uta-2020-2">it signed Charli D'Amelio</a> along with her sister Dixie and her two parents. </p><p>In that same month, WME signed 17-year-old TikTok star <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/chase-hudson-tiktok-collective-hype-house-sign-wme-1268680">Chase Hudson</a> (15.5 million followers), who founded the creator collective <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/style/hype-house-los-angeles-tik-tok.html">Hype House,</a> along with <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/tiktoker-addison-rae-signs-wme-1271521">Addison Easterling</a> (known as Addison Rae with 22 million TikTok followers) and her parents.</p><p>What is the plan for these surging stars?</p><p>Business Insider spoke with agents at WME, who said the main focus for TikTok stars right now is not crossing over to traditional Hollywood and landing a big movie role, but rather developing lasting relationships with top brands, attending events, and building exposure.</p><p>WME has already begun placing Hudson and Easterling at events, and as seen on Instagram, they have each started to promote brands like Fendi, Dolce Gabbana, and Reebok to their millions of followers.</p><h2><strong>What WME looks for in a digital creator </strong></h2><p>When scouting for talent, WME isn't necessarily interested in someone who is a TikTok mega-star, but instead is focused on creators it can help build a business and career around, according to Joe Izzi, a digital agent at WME. </p><p>"I think it's super exciting to have a new platform that is another pipeline for us to discover talent," Izzi told Business Insider. "Regardless of the platform, the No. 1 thing we always look for is talented creators - people that we can help build a business around that's long-lasting." </p><p>That's important because cross-platform reach will help a creator sustain a career. </p><p>The agency's digital department already represents several creators across YouTube, like Casey Neistat, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-youtube-star-david-dobriks-seatgeek-influencer-marketing-deal-2019-9">David Dobrik</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dolan-twins-ethan-and-grayson-on-fragrance-brand-wakeheart-interview-2020-1">The Dolan Twins</a>, in developing a content strategy, sourcing and negotiating deals, and exploring traditional media opportunities. </p><p>Hudson and Easterling rose to fame on TikTok by sharing short dance videos to the platform. Since then, they have each built massive followings on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. </p><p>"They can't be one dimensional," Greenberg said. "We like to look for multifaceted creators that have an interest in being entrepreneurial, and that we think are interested in exploring a variety of different categories outside of what they are known for." </p><p>The benchmark WME studies to measure the success of a single creator is social-media engagement: likes, comments, and views. </p><p>"Because engagement is what's going to dictate the ability to convert audiences to different areas," Greenberg said. "Also, it will affect someone's ability to sell."</p><h2>Leveraging TikTok to build brand partnerships </h2><p>Whether it's a YouTuber, TikTok creator, or a gamer, WME is dealing with people who have total ownership and control over their distribution and marketing, different from a traditional celebrity.</p><p>Brand sponsorships are an important revenue stream for digital creators and having an agent can help these stars connect with major brands and build long-term partnerships.</p><p>Clients like Hudson and Easterling work with WME in producing sponsored content. Alex Devlin, a digital agent at WME, said brands bring concepts to her and that she's noticed they look to creators and their reps for guidance on how to partner in an effective way, without it seeming overly branded. </p><p>"I think with brands, they are still trying to figure out what the actual return is here," Devlin said. His most recent single, "Partycrasher," was released in September 2021.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZwjfxBQkIeQ" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Hudson is known for his emo aesthetic, which is reflected in his music, and as the ex-boyfriend of Charli D'Amelio, a former Hype House member and the most-followed person on TikTok.</p><p>A key plot point in the early episodes of the series is the tension between Hudson and other Hype House members as Hudson pursues a career away from TikTok.</p><p>In January 2021, Hudson was named in a <a href="https://www.insider.com/tony-lopez-lawsuit-sued-denies-alleged-sexual-battery-emotional-distress-2021-1">legal complaint</a> brought on the behalf of two teenage girls. The girls accused former Hype House member Tony Lopez of grooming them and coercing them into sexual acts. Ths Netflix series shows him having taken on the role of Hype House manager following Hudson's absence.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/party-hype-house-larray-birthday-la-james-charles-tana-influencer-2020-7">Hype House came under fire</a> in July 2020 for <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrity-influencer-party-partying-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-2021-3#thomas-petrou-39">throwing a party during the pandemic</a> for Larri "Larray" Merritt's birthday. The party was attended by other influencers, including the D'Amelio sisters, James Charles, Emma Chamberlain, and Tana Mongeau. Petrou told the Hollywood Fix there were only 67 people <a href="https://twitter.com/defnoodles/status/1285944357682470914?s=20">at the party,</a> but a <a href="https://twitter.com/defnoodles/status/1285997258886934529?s=20">video shared online appeared to show</a> large groups of people waiting to get in.  </p><p>Petrou also had a spat with former member Daisy Keech, who <a href="https://www.cosmopolitan.com/lifestyle/a31982400/daisy-keech-hype-house-drama-thomas-petrou/">posted a since-deleted YouTube video</a> claiming Petrou and Hudson did not give her credit as a co-founder of the Hype House. She later filed a lawsuit, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/abrambrown/2020/03/26/founders-feud-at-hype-house-gets-nasty-an-armed-guard-a-new-lawsuit-and-a-breakaway-group-of-tiktok-stars/?sh=97034e63f316">Forbes reported</a>. </p><p>In January 2021, Petrou was <a href="https://www.insider.com/tony-lopez-lawsuit-sued-denies-alleged-sexual-battery-emotional-distress-2021-1">named in a legal complaint</a> that included Hudson and the Lopez brothers. According to one of the teen girls that was interviewed for the complaint, Petrou invited her and a friend to the Hype House, where she said she engaged in sex acts with Tony Lopez. Many of his friends were in attendance at the <a href="https://www.insider.com/party-hype-house-larray-birthday-la-james-charles-tana-influencer-2020-7">birthday party</a> that the <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrity-influencer-party-partying-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-2021-3#khloe-kardashian-7">Hype House threw for him in July 2020</a>. The 22-year-old told <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomward/2021/01/23/alex-warren-went-from-sleeping-in-a-car-to-owning-a-mansion/?sh=8253a0322448">Forbes</a> in January 2021 that he'd been trying to become an internet star for more than a decade. "I've been at this for 11 years. It was never immediate for me. But I knew that eventually, it would pay off," he said. </p><p>He makes comedic videos with his girlfriend, Kouvr Annon, who also features in the show. Gomez denied the allegations in a YouTube video saying, "Making an untrue sexual assault claim is never OK. I'm beyond saddened by this situation. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A controversy involving some of <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword>'s top talent captivated fans, fellow creators, and helpless bystanders alike on Monday night.</li><li>Rumors about two of the platform's most famous couples sparked the controversy and sent shock waves through their respective fandoms. </li><li>Soon, creators from rival collab houses began unfollowing and subtweeting en masse.  </li><li>The drama is an extension of a feud that can be traced back to the release of "Still Softish" in March.</li><li>"Still Softish," a diss track by <keyword id="5096302" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Josh-Richards">Josh Richards</keyword> and Bryce Hall, was an unexpected hit. It introduced the general public to a TikTok controversy brewing behind the scenes.</li></ul><p>TikTok drama reached a boiling point on Monday night when multiple stars on the platform began to unfollow, confront, and expose each other en masse.</p><p>The controversy included the most-followed creator <a href="https://www.insider.com/charli-d-amelio-bio-how-old-tiktok-famous-renegade-super-bowl-2020">Charli D'Amelio</a>, 16, <keyword id="8532020" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hype-House">Hype House</keyword> cofounder <a href="https://www.insider.com/lilhuddy-aka-chase-hudson-dating-charli-damelio-hype-house-founder-2020-2">Chase "LilHuddy" Hudson</a>, 18, Sway LA ringleader <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-josh-richards-sway-house-hiatus-apology-2020-6">Josh Richards</a>, 18, rising star <a href="https://www.insider.com/who-is-nessa-barrett-tiktok-star-quran-2020-4">Nessa Barrett</a>, 17, and more. Dubbed by fans "TikTokalypse" or #WorldWarTea, the drama was messy and hard to follow. But thanks to late-night reporting by TikTok reporting pages like @tiktokroom, fans managed to piece together what happened.</p><p>It's a cross-platform saga that can be traced back to at least March when a diss track by the name of "<a href="https://genius.com/Josh-richards-still-softish-lyrics">Still Softish</a>" made its explosive debut on YouTube. </p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zIUSMI1Y-7o" frameborder="0"></iframe><h2><strong>The controversy can be traced back to March and the release of a diss track called 'Still Softish'</strong></h2><p>Prior to establishing the Hype House in December 2019 and the Sway House in January 2020 respectively, 18-year-old <keyword id="9054778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="chase-hudson">Chase Hudson</keyword> and 18-year-old Josh Richards were friends.</p><p>Both found early success on Musical.ly, the app that eventually became TikTok, and toured the country together during Lights Out, a roaming fan meet-and-greet that featured some of the platform's most recognizable faces.  </p><p>It's unclear when and why exactly the relationship between Hudson and Richards ruptured. In March 2020, their behind-the-scenes beef became public and viral when Richards and Hall dropped "Still Softish." Among other things, Richards rapped about Hudson reportedly trying to hit on Richards' then-girlfriend <keyword id="9307972" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nessa-barrett">Nessa Barrett</keyword>, 17.</p><p>Hudson, at the time of the diss track's release, appeared to be in an "<a href="https://www.insider.com/charli-damelio-met-j-lo-exclusive-not-dating-lilhuddy-yet-2020-2">exclusive</a>" relationship with Charli D'Amelio, who at only 16 years old is the most followed creator on TikTok with over 40 million followers. In mid-April, Hudson and D'Amelio <a href="https://www.insider.com/when-did-charli-damelio-chase-hudson-breakup-cheat-lilhuddy-2020-4">confirmed their breakup</a> with matching Instagram Stories.</p><p>D'Amelio never publicly commented on "Still Softish" or the unconfirmed cheating rumors it implied. Hudson tweeted a <a href="https://twitter.com/xlilhuddy/status/1241083455338762240?lang=en">cryptic response to the song</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBtxb1IVGWU">reacted to the music video on-camera</a> for a video on Hall's YouTube channel, but never explicitly confirmed or denied the song's allegations.</p><h2><strong>The controversy erupted again on Monday between Hype House and Sway House</strong></h2><p>By June, Richards and Hudson appeared to have reached an amicable truce. Their two collab houses, Hype House and Sway House — where fellow TikTok creators live and work together — began working on content with one another. Michael Gruen of TalentX Entertainment, Sway's parent company, <a href="https://www.insider.com/sway-hype-house-clubhouse-tiktok-collab-houses-2020-6">told Insider</a> that while there was no planned merger, the two groups were making a conscious effort to "support" and build "each other up instead of competing."</p><p>But on July 6, "Still Softish" rumors resurfaced and sparked a cross-platform creator battle royale in the process. </p><p>On Monday evening, @tiktokroom flagged what was, more or less, the first sign that something was amiss: D'Amelio was no longer following Hudson and Barrett on Instagram. The online speculation spiked when <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CCUFef9D6rZ/">D'Amelio shared a picture of herself on Instagram</a> with a pithy caption: "your loss." </p><p>From there, fans noticed that Hype House cofounder <keyword id="9398298" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="thomas-petrou">Thomas Petrou</keyword> had unfollowed Barrett — a potential <a href="https://youtu.be/J-OvytKkqoU">Hype House recruit</a> — and Barrett had apparently unfollowed him, too. Barett also deleted all of the videos she'd recently filmed at the Hype House from her feed. Soon after, fans realized Richards and Hudson had unfollowed each other as well. In support of their friend, Sway affiliates Anthony Reeves, Griffin Johnson, Kio Cyr, and Blake Gray unfollowed Hudson, too. </p><p>Word of the inter-collab house upheaval spread like wildfire, as new information continued to emerge. Earlier that day, Heidi D'Amelio, Charli's mother, mysteriously posted and deleted an Instagram Story that featured two angry emojis against a pitch-black background. Hudson's mother, known to fans as "Mama Hudson," shared cryptic posts about trust, love, and honesty in relationships on her Instagram Story. </p><h2>Ultimately, the drama appeared to center around the young teen stars' relationships</h2><p>In a since-deleted tweet, Hudson attempted to clear his name and pull the plug on the scandal by addressing it head-on. "All of this drama going on is because I kissed Nessa when we were both single," he wrote. A falling-out between TikTok's biggest stars led to a wave of creators unfollowing and subtweeting each other

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The biggest stars of 2020 are kids who have gone viral on <keyword id="6354632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="social-media">social media</keyword>. </li><li>Experts say these young influencers are even more at risk for developing problems than previous generations of <keyword id="1738504" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Child-Stars">child stars</keyword>, as their lives are constantly broadcast (and observed by) millions worldwide. </li><li>With social media, people have become obsessed with their own visibility. Whether they're aware of it or not, influencers are constantly fighting to be seen and battling that "threat of invisibility," said Ciarán Mc Mahon, PhD, the author of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Social-Media-Everything/dp/1138047759">"The Psychology of Social Media."</a></li><li>Child stars often become addicted to fame, and thousands of influencers fighting for attention may be extremely disappointed when they are one day unable to keep it up. </li></ul><p>In 1968, Andy Warhol predicted that in the future, "everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes." He was right, and that was before <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword>, where all it takes to blow up is an iPhone and a pretty face. But Warhol couldn't have predicted that TikTok's algorithm would quickly sweep up a huge group of children, making them some of the most famous people in the world in the blink of an eye.</p><p>The most-followed creator on TikTok, Charli D'Amelio, turned 16 on May 1. Loren Gray, whom D'Amelio recently overtook for the top spot on the short-form video platform, turned 18 in April.</p><p>The young age of the app's biggest stars was on full display <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktokalypse-tiktok-drama-chase-hudson-lilhuddy-charli-damelio-2020-7">amid recent drama</a>, as D'Amelio and Chase Hudson, 18, fought over their relationship publicly on Twitter. A series of tweets from both of them implicated other TikTok megastars in the saga, too, including Josh Richards, 18, and Nessa Barrett, 17. </p><p>Experts warn that these young influencers will face the typical hurdles of child fame, but with the additional complication of real-time social media surveillance by millions and an algorithmically programmed addiction to the instant gratification of a never-ending barrage of notifications. </p><p>"We've had cases of child stars in different eras and different times. But this is a more enhanced and hyper version of that," Ciarán Mc Mahon, PhD, the author of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Psychology-Social-Media-Everything/dp/1138047759">"The Psychology of Social Media</a>," told Insider. For young influencers, that is compounded with incessant social media attention.</strong></h2><p>While the advent of social media apps like TikTok and Instagram have given the world more ways to connect, it's also changed the meaning of fame and reshaped the path to becoming a <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword>. Perhaps most notably is the fact that everyday children are so easily vaulted into the spotlight with little predictability.</p><p>"Your ability to assess risk, your ability to make some cognitive judgments to plan ahead — all of those things are cognitive skills that develop over that period of time," said media psychologist <a href="http://www.pamelarutledge.com/">Pamela Rutledge</a>, PhD, speaking about the period of life before 25, before the "rational" part of the brain is <a href="https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=1&amp;ContentID=30513051">fully developed</a>. Experiencing fame during adolescence, Rutledge said, makes it even harder for celebrities to keep a handle on reality. "Everyone wants to be famous. But in fact, for most of us, that's not the real world." </p><p><div type="image" title="hype house" height="560" width="1120" msid="75945995" hostid="261"></div>These influencer-celebrities are at risk for the same challenges faced by traditional <keyword id="2370" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="hollywood">Hollywood</keyword> child stars, made infamous by the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Drew Barrymore, and Michael Jackson. </p><p>"From the time I became famous in 'E.T.,' my life got really weird," <a href="https://people.com/archive/cover-story-the-secret-drew-barrymore-vol-31-no-2/">Barrymore told People in 1989 of her experience with child fame</a>. "One day I was a little girl, and the next day I was being mobbed by people who wanted me to sign my autograph or pose for pictures or who just wanted to touch me. It was frightening. I was this 7-year-old who was expected to be going on a mature 29."</p><p><div type="image" title="drew barrymore child fame" height="1024" width="679" msid="75945998" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Barrymore's experience of being thrust into the spotlight at a young age has been echoed by countless other child stars <a href="https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-moms/pictures/troubled-stars-2010103/">throughout more than a century of Hollywood history</a> as early fame has led many to a host of problems, including <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/drew-barrymore-opens-about-her-cocaine-use-relationship-mom-t137463">drug and alcohol abuse</a>, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/amanda-bynes-seeking-treatment-mental-health-issues-lawyer-says-n1163276">mental illness</a>, and <a href="https://people.com/music/britney-spears-good-contact-sons-after-family-drama-happier/">familial struggles</a>. This is no hard-kept secret: It's been documented thoroughly by celebrity tabloids for years. </p><p>It's also a phenomenon that has been studied by psychologists including Donna Rockwell, PhD, and David Giles, PhD, whose <a href="https://www.academia.edu/693083/Being_a_celebrity_The_phenomenology_of_fame">2009 article in the Journal of Phenomenological Psychology</a> identified "four temporal phases" in the mind of a celebrity: "love/hate, addiction, acceptance, and adaptation." </p><p>"When a person becomes famous, there's so much attention on the famous person that, neurologically, they forget how to tune back out — in other words, how to have appropriate and <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword>y empathy for other people," Rockwell, a researcher and clinical psychologist who specializes in celebrity mental health, told Insider. "It isn't even a choice when it comes down to it. There's so much incoming attention that the neurons lose their memory on what's necessary, as far as in extending an empathetic outreach." </p><p>Rockwell added that even "for the most grounded of people, getting swept up into the spotlight of fame is very difficult to withstand, to stay grounded. So for a child, it's 10 times more difficult. It's exponentially more challenging because they haven't even developed a full self yet."</p><p>For children and teens, identity can easily morph and become lost in fame, with their notoriety becoming an engrained part of their personality. "It isn't like somebody is giving you a part to play in or writing a script for you. You're having to do this sort of creation all the time," said Rutledge. "Given the addictive nature of this immediate, self‐defining feedback, social media companies may even capitalize upon this to maximally engage users. However, growing evidence indicates that relying on online feedback for self‐esteem can have adverse effects on young people," the report found. </p><p>When that quantified social success, or lack thereof, is magnified in the form of fame, it can be extremely difficult to find a sense of self-worth outside of that attention. With social media, people become obsessed with their own visibility. Whether they're aware of it or not, influencers are constantly fighting to be seen and battling this "threat of invisibility," Mc Mahon said.</p><p>"The algorithms that underlie practically every social media service today force us to compete for visibility," Mc Mahon said. "As such, these teenagers may now feel themselves in an extraordinary bind – competing against each other, and the newsfeed algorithms in order to maintain visibility, a competition in which only the social media services succeed."</p><p>The concept of viral social media fame has become so ingrained in our society that it's almost natural for people to hope their next post will take off, Mc Mahon said. "I think most of us harbor a slight desire, and maybe an unconscious one, that 'this is the tweet that will go viral,'" he said. "Of course, for the vast majority of us, it isn't."</p><h2><strong>Fame itself is one of the most addictive drugs of all — and it's the perpetual need to chase that high that can lead celebrities down a troubled path</strong></h2><p>Many child celebrities turn to drug use and alcohol because of their need to satisfy an addiction to fame. "You get a physiological reward when people like you. It triggers your reward system. And so if you lose that, then you start looking for other means of triggering that," Rutledge said, explaining that becoming addicted to fame leaves you "vulnerable" to other drugs. </p><p>Both Rutledge and Mc Mahon compared this phenomenon to the experience of a singer performing for a stadium of fans. They become high off of that energy. "It's an incredible feeling," Mc Mahon said of fame. </p><p>But at the end of the night, they go back to their hotel room, and they're often alone. "There's always a risk if there's that vulnerability, if you really are feeding off that fandom as something that's fueling you rather than a fueling of a sort of a larger life goal that you have," Rutledge said. </p><p>Shia LaBoeuf, who recently wrote and starred in a film based on his own troubled experience as a child star, "Honey Boy," told <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/shia-labeouf-reflects-his-troubled-childhood-transformers-therapy-rising-again-honey-boy-1250660">The Hollywood Reporter</a> last year that he had become "addicted to that kudos" celebrities are inundated with. "It kind of fueled my way of working for a long time — just pining your own pain, and holding on to it, and not really ever dealing with it or questioning it, but just keeping it in a little bottle that you can pop the top on whenever it's needed, when the switch needs to be flipped," he said. </p><p><div type="image" title="shia labeouf child fame" height="932" width="1024" msid="75946000" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Beyond drug and alcohol use, which <a href="https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a19181320/shia-labeouf-interview-2018/">LaBoeuf has struggled with</a>, that constant attention can give people an altered sense of empathy. There's an "uneven give and take" with fame, where fans of a celebrity can fawn over this public figure, Rockwell said. "When people have a lot of attention put on them — child stars, social media influencers — all of that attention can lead to acquired situational narcissism, ASN, even if that person had all the love and adequate mirroring in their early life as they possibly could have wished for." </p><p>Danny Bonaduce, one of the child stars interviewed for Rockwell's research, was a huge star in the 1970s for his role in the hit sitcom "The Partridge Family." Bonaduce, who is now 60, has spoken publicly about his drug use. "He says that he's been addicted to almost every substance known to man, and the most addictive of all of them is fame itself," Rockwell said of Bonaduce's self-reporting for her study. </p><p>Still, Rockwell said Bonaduce and others she interviewed in her research have said they wouldn't give up their fame, and the access and opportunities that came along with it. There are thousands of teens around the world who are "famous" on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, and most of them will not be able to uphold that level of fame for long. </p><p>"The <keyword id="15482" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="lifestyle">lifestyle</keyword> that they're currently engaging is probably very enjoyable, it's very exciting and stimulating. They must know in their heart of hearts that they can't continue like that for a very long period of time," Mc Mahon said. "My advice to them would be, quite simply, to think about their exit plan." </p><h2><strong>Experts say the best way to be well-adjusted while in the spotlight is to use your influence 'for good'</strong></h2><p>Many influencers have already perhaps unintentionally discovered what experts say is the best way to protect oneself against the dangers of fame. By using influence to help the world and raise awareness about causes you're passionate about, you're actually establishing a deeper sense of who you are as a person. </p><p>"If you're using your celebrity for good, you can actually come out of it better because you are developing an internal self," Rockwell said. "You are being someone that you can be proud of. You are living out your values." </p><p>One example of this is the teenager who <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/nov/27/tiktok-makeup-tutorial-conceals-call-to-action-on-chinas-treatment-of-uighurs">filmed makeup tutorials on TikTok </a>while talking about China's treatment of Muslims as they work in internment camps in Xinjian. And both Charli and Dixie D'Amelio, two of the most famous people on TikTok, have already <a href="https://www.insider.com/charli-dixie-damelio-tik-tok-biggest-stars-cyberbullying-video-2020-2">participated in multiple efforts to help the collective good</a>, including a recent anti-bullying project with Unicef and <a href="https://www.insider.com/charli-damelio-hits-back-at-people-commenting-on-her-body-2020-4">promoting body positivity</a>. Dixie D'Amelio <a href="https://www.insider.com/dixie-damelio-interview-profile-tiktok-fame-charli-2020-4">told Insider in a previous interview</a> that she loves using her platform to "raise awareness and money for good causes." </p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-jFYPyC9n_0" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Research suggests that kids who take advantage of that opportunity in a positive way can lead to better-adjusted adult lives, something that all psychologists interviewed for this piece agreed on. </p><p>But the onus is also on parents of these kids to keep them grounded, Mc Mahon said, though that is another challenge in and of itself. Certain measures, like a parent trying to take away their kid's phone, will likely "backfire," especially during a time like the coronavirus pandemic when everyone is stuck inside the home. "There has to be reasoned and careful conversations around these things," Mc Mahon said. </p><p>Rockwell said she recommends child stars work with coaches and therapists "to help the child remain grounded and stay centered so they can withstand this impact of fame." </p><p>Still, there's another group who holds some responsibility here: the general public. "There's also a responsibility on the rest of us who are consuming the content that they produce and what exactly we're rewarding," Mc Mahon said.
