Evidence suggests that a combination of a person's genetics and lifestyle governs how long they'll live, but a study published in <a target="_blank" href="https://ebm.bmj.com/content/ebmed/early/2024/04/16/bmjebm-2023-112583.full.pdf?with-ds=yes">BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine</a> on Monday is thought to be the first to compare the effects of the two on lifespan. The study looked at data from 353,742 adults with European ancestry collected between 2006 and 2010, and tracked their health until 2021 to ascertain whether their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/surprising-centenarian-longevity-tips-met-superagers-2023-11">genes or lifestyle</a> had a bigger impact on their lifespan.The researchers ranked the participants according to whether they were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/is-obesity-genetic">genetically predisposed</a> to diseases that could shorten their lifespan, and whether they led a healthy lifestyle. Not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, having a healthy body shape, and drinking alcohol in moderation defined a favorable lifestyle, while the opposite was unfavorable.<h2>Healthy lifestyle choices appeared to offset the impact of genes on longevity</h2>Participants who led "unfavorable" lifestyles were 78% more likely to die early than people with favorable lifestyles — regardless of whether they had genes linked to a shorter or longer lifespan.The study also found those who were genetically predisposed to short lifespans were 21% more likely to die early than those predisposed to longer lives, even if they made favorable lifestyle choices. At the same time, a healthy lifestyle appeared to offset the effects of genes linked to a shorter lifespan by 62%.Making favorable lifestyle choices despite having genes linked to a shorter lifespan was linked to living 5.22 years longer than those who made unfavorable choices.Dr. Liz Williams, a lecturer in human nutrition and a member of the Healthy Lifespan Institute at the University of Sheffield, who wasn't involved in the study, told Business Insider that she wasn't surprised that the study found a link between lifespan, genes, and lifestyle factors. However, she said that the effects of lifestyle factors in the study were notable because they suggest that while we can't change our genes, healthy habits may lessen their impact.<h2>Not smoking, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy diet could help you live longer</h2>The researchers argued that not smoking, exercising regularly, sleeping seven to eight hours a night, and eating a healthy diet formed what they called an "optimal lifestyle combination," which appeared to help people live longer while being sustainable over a long period.The study defined adequate exercise according to the American Heart Association's guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, gardening, or tennis, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week, such as hiking, swimming, or heavy yard work. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/mediterranean-diet">A balanced diet</a> with an adequate amount of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish, and a low amount of red and processed meats was deemed healthy.The researchers didn't include having a healthy body shape — i.e., having a BMI of between 18.5 and 30 — or reducing alcohol consumption in their "optimal lifestyle combination." However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that obesity is associated with the leading causes of death, and that drinking too much alcohol can shorten people's lives by an average of 24 years.Williams said that alcohol consumption and body shape "definitely still matter" for longevity.It's also important to note that the study was observational, meaning the researchers couldn't prove that the lifestyle changes improved the participants' longevity. Plus, because this study was only done on people of European descent, the same associations might not apply to other populations, Williams said.

New Delhi, Dec 2 () Textile player Raymond on Monday said ownership of Raymond brand will remain with the demerged new lifestyle company.
The company had earlier announced hiving off the consumer and lifestyle businesses into a separate entity.
"Raymond consulted with industry and financial experts to arrive at an optimal structure in relation to ownership of brands related to lifestyle businesses. Under the proposed scheme, along with the lifestyle business, 'Raymond' and all other brands currently being used in respect of textiles, readymade garments, retail business related to Lifestyle business, tailoring services and allied accessories will be assigned to and owned by Raymond Lifestyle Business," the company said in a BSE filing.
Consequently, once the proposed scheme is approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Raymond lifestyle business will not be required to pay any royalty to Raymond Ltd for its use of the brands.
"Raymond' brand ownership for all the other businesses (except for Raymond Lifestyle Businesses) will remain with Raymond Ltd.
"I am happy to announce the management's decision of moving brand ownership with usage categories in respective companies...There will be no intercompany brand licencing rights or royalty contracts," Raymond Ltd Chairman &amp; Managing Director Gautam Hari Singhania said.
The company had earlier announced the proposed demerger of its core lifestyle business into a separate entity that will be listed through mirror shareholding structure.
The new company will be listed and the existing shareholders of residual Raymond will get the shares of the new company on a 1:1 basis.
The move will create a clear demarcation of lifestyle and other businesses leading to the simplification of the group structure.

A healthy lifestyle may reduce the risk of dementia in people who have type 2 diabetes (T2D), finds a new study. The study found that individuals with T2D and an unhealthy lifestyle were much more likely to develop dementia than people without T2D and a very healthy lifestyle. However, a healthy lifestyle almost halved the likelihood of people with T2D developing dementia. "Adhering to current dietary, physical activity and sleep recommendations is key to good health and it may contribute to a lower risk of dementia in people with diabetes," said researcher Carlos Celis-Morales from the <keyword id="174073" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="university-of-glasgow" source="Orion">University of Glasgow</keyword>. "We have shown that following these healthy lifestyle guidelines also significantly reduces the increase in the risk of dementia experienced by people with diabetes," Celis-Morales added. For the study, presented at the annual meeting of the <keyword id="310949" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="european-association" source="Orion">European Association</keyword> for the Study of Diabetes (<keyword id="1928126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="easd" source="Orion">EASD</keyword>) in Stockholm, the team tracked almost 450,000 participants of the <keyword id="3324036" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="uk-biobank" source="Orion">UK Biobank</keyword> study for the development of dementia. The 445,364 participants (54.6 per cent female) had an average age of 55.6 years and were followed up for a median of 9.1 years. All were free of dementia at the start of this period. Both T2D and an unhealthy lifestyle were associated with a higher risk of dementia. Those with T2D were 33 per cent more likely to develop dementia than those without T2D. An unhealthy lifestyle was even more strongly associated with dementia. The participants with the least healthy lifestyles were 65 per cent more likely to develop dementia than those with the healthiest lifestyle. Further analysis revealed that a healthy lifestyle appears to reduce the risk of dementia in those with T2D. Individuals with diabetes and the healthiest lifestyles were 45 per cent less likely to develop dementia than those with diabetes and the unhealthiest lifestyles. New Delhi, Feb 9 () German luxury carmaker Audi is gearing up to become a service provider as well, offering a host of premium lifestyle services to its customers in India, according to a top official of the firm. The company, under its 2025 strategy of focussing on customer centricity besides enhancing product portfolio and sales and service network in the Indian market, is working to develop further on the concierge services that it offers to its car buyers. "We are a car company at this point of time at least, moving forward obviously from a car company we will probably become a service provider. That's the way to go...," Audi India Head Balbir Singh Dhillon told . Elaborating on the plan, he said at present there are around 75,000 Audi owners in India who have purchased car priced above Rs 30-40 lakh and the data of these customers will help it devise ways to further interact with them and offer what they want. "So when we move from a carmaker to a service provider there are so many things in your life as an Audi customer which you need on a day-to-day basis. We are evaluating, working on how do we reach your home more than by just selling the car and providing aftersales services," he said. For instance, Dhillon said through the concierge services available on the company's app, an Audi owner can seek help in booking a restaurant, ordering a bouquet, or even plan to watch mega sporting events like Wimbledon. "It is an extension of the services that we are offering slowly...Basically from car to personal lifestyle that you need. For instance let's say you need to buy a very exclusive clothing, we may suggest you where do you stitch your clothing. These are all services which are offered as of now as a gesture of goodwill but this could become a profit centre for the time to come," he said. Luxury accessories that the company sells to Audi customers, "in the times to come could be co-branded with another brand", he said adding, these are the new territories which the company will experiment with. Dhillon further said,"At this point of time where we will reach in three to five years, I don't know but are we going in that direction? Answer is yes. It is little bit unknown waters." When asked how far the company has progressed in this front, Dhillon said Audi will have to do a lot of experimentations. "We will have to work with a lot of partners, who potentially may not be car companies, but anything and everything which is in and around car...There are discussions with a couple of partners." He also said the company will have "customer clinic to also understand, as we don't want to do things that customers don't like, where we will not only ask about the car but also about their needs, habits, their lifestyle and how do we reach them more, what else do they expect from us, as manufacturers in the next three to five years time." Dhillon further said,"You need to engage with them to find the answers. It is the beginning of it, maybe from a year and half from now we would be in a better position to answer this question when we would have tried some more things. We have just started."
