Shares of state-owned behemoth Life Insurance Corporation (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) have outperformed rivals like <keyword id="20079495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Life" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Life" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Life">HDFC Life</keyword> and <keyword id="21278696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Prudential-Life" source="keywords">ICICI Prudential Life</keyword>, as it placed bets on India's growth sectors, including infrastructure, while the private sector concentrated its bets on tech, consumer and consumer-related <keyword id="19910880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BFSI" source="keywords">BFSI</keyword> companies. LIC's stock has gained nearly 79% from Rs 620 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 1,109.15 at the closing on Tuesday, according to stock exchange data. In contrast, HDFC Life gave a negative return with Tuesday's closing price of Rs 646.55 on the BSE as compared to Rs 666.55 a year back. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co delivered a return of 12%, considering its stock price rise from Rs 582 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 654.10 on June 16, 2024. Over the past one year, <keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI" source="keywords">SBI</keyword> Life Insurance shares have risen from Rs 1,314 to Rs 1,621.20, delivering a return of 23%. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

Exposure to India's infra sector helps LIC, SBI outshine peers

Life Insurance Corporation of India (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) MD and CEO Siddhartha Mohanty has said that the corporation is looking to make fresh investments of around Rs 1.30 lakh crore in equities during the current financial year. During April-June FY25, the insurance behemoth made an investment of about Rs 38,000 crore in <keyword id="19907577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shares" source="keywords">shares</keyword> as against Rs 23,300 crore in the same period a year ago. LIC earned a profit of Rs 15,500 crore from its investments in equity markets during the first quarter. The profit from its investment was higher by 13.5 % quarter-on-quarter. "We are surely looking at the markets and price movements...we are looking to invest a good amount at least whatever we had invested in last financial year...LIC invested around Rs 1.32 lakh crore in FY'24," he said. The <keyword id="19913381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market" source="keywords">market</keyword> value of LIC's investment in stocks of various <keyword id="20027214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="companies" source="keywords">companies</keyword> stood at around Rs 15 lakh crore at the end of June, he said. LIC has exposure in 282 companies through investment in their shares as of June 30, 2024. The <keyword id="20340200" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="assets-under-management" source="keywords">Assets Under Management</keyword> (<keyword id="20019621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AUM" source="keywords">AUM</keyword>) increased to Rs 53,58,781 crore as of June-end as compared to Rs 46,11,067 crore at the end of the same quarter the previous year, registering an increase of 16.22 %. Total investment grew by Rs 7,30,662 crore, from Rs 42,44,852 crore in March 2023 to Rs 49,75,514 crore as of March 31, 2024. The total equity investment portfolio constitutes Rs 12,39,740 crore as against Rs 8,39,662 crore in 2022-23, whereas other investments constitute Rs 37,35,774 crore as against Rs 34,05,190 crore in 2022-23. For the June quarter 2024, LIC reported a 10% increase in net profit to Rs 10,461 crore as against Rs 9,544 crore in the year-ago period. Total income increased to Rs 2,10,910 crore during the latest June quarter as against Rs 1,88,749 crore in the year-ago period. Total premium income for the quarter increased 16 % to Rs 1,13,770 crore as compared to Rs 98,363 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

The stock jumped 3 per cent to Rs 1,159.60 on the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords">BSE</keyword>. At the NSE, it climbed 3 per cent to Rs 1,160 apiece. The state-owned life insurance behemoth had a net profit of Rs 9,544 crore in the year-ago period. The total income increased to Rs 2,10,910 crore during the latest June quarter as against Rs 1,88,749 crore in the year-ago period, LIC said in a regulatory filing on Thursday. <keyword id="22725292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lic-md" source="keywords">LIC MD</keyword> and CEO Siddhartha Mohanty said the Assets Under Management (AUM) increased to Rs 53,58,781 crore as on June 30, as compared to Rs 46,11,067 crore at the end of same quarter previous year, registering an increase of 16.22 per cent. The total premium income for the quarter increased by 16 per cent to Rs 1,13,770 crore, as compared to Rs 98,363 crore in the same quarter a year ago. Asked about entry into the health insurance business, he said, LIC is exploring the option of picking up majority stakes in a standalone health insurance company.

This trend could squeeze margins and put pressure on insurers to find ways to manage costs while remaining competitive in the market. However, for the <keyword id="20224622" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motor-insurance" source="keywords">motor insurance</keyword> segment, the report draws a promising picture and added that it is entering a promising multi-year upcycle. This positive momentum is expected to benefit large private insurers of the motor segment, who are well-positioned to capitalize on these trends. "Initiate on Non-Life Insurers Large private insurers are set to gain from multi-year upcycle in motor (approx. 35% of premium mix) led by <keyword id="21232881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="premiumization" source="keywords">premiumization</keyword> of underlying auto mix and moderating competitive intensity" the report mentioned. The report also added that the motor insurance segment in India is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% over the financial years 2024 to 2027. The key driver behind this growth is the ongoing shift in the automobile market towards higher-value vehicles. Over the past three years, the average selling price (ASP) of passenger vehicles (PVs) has increased by 41%, reflecting a move towards premium segments. This trend is expected to continue, benefiting motor insurance renewals, which account for 60-70% of the motor insurance premium mix. "Motor segment amidst a multi-year upcycle (est. 14% CAGR over FY24-27E) as renewals (60-70% of premium mix) will continue to benefit from the underlying change in auto mix towards premium high-value segments" the report added. Despite these challenges, the report mentioned that the broader non-life insurance market in India remains significantly underpenetrated, with insurance premiums representing only about 1% of the country's <keyword id="19904293" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP" source="keywords">GDP</keyword>. This is relatively low compared to global peers, where non-life insurance to GDP ratios range between 2% and 4%. However, the Indian non-life insurance market has shown steady growth, with gross premiums expanding at a CAGR of 12% over the past five years, reaching Rs 2.8 trillion (approximately $35 billion). Notably, the private sector has outpaced the overall market. "India remains an under-penetrated market with non-life insurance to GDP at approx. 1% (vs 2-4% for global peers). Gross premiums have expanded at 12% CAGR over the last 5 years to Rs 2.8tn (approx. $35bn) with the private sector growing faster at 15% CAGR and improving its market share to 68%(from 57%)" said Jefferies in the report. Despite these challenges, the overall insurance market in India remains underpenetrated, offering significant long-term growth potential for insurers who can navigate these dynamics effectively.

"Depositors can now track the status of their claims by entering their mobile number (registered with their bank) on the DICGC website," said DICGC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>). To begin with, depositors can view the status of their claims for banks placed under All Inclusive Directions (AID) post-April 01, 2024. The corporation ensures that all categories of deposits with banks except institutional deposits. The <keyword id="20132734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposit-insurance" source="keywords">deposit insurance</keyword> coverage limit has been enhanced six times since 1962, from Rs 1,500 per depositor held in the same right and same capacity at all the branches of the insured bank to Rs 5,00,000 on February 04, 2020. At present, 97.8% of the total deposit accounts are fully protected. Of the remaining 2.2 % of accounts, deposits are insured up to the limit of Rs 5 lakh. In terms of value, 43.1 % of the deposits were insured as of March 2024. In the case of liquidated banks and banks under the Reserve Bank's All-Inclusive Directions (AIDs), the DICGC settled claims amounting to Rs 1,432 crore during 2023-24. During the year, it received repayments of Rs 900.73 crore, of which Rs 760.83 crore was from liquidated/transferee banks and Rs 139.90 crore from banks under AID. All banks operating in India are registered with the corporation for <keyword id="20132734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposit-insurance" source="keywords">deposit insurance</keyword>. The number of banks registered with DICGC was 1,997 as of March 31, 2024, of which 140 were commercial banks and 1,857 were cooperative banks. The total premium received by the corporation during 2023-24 stood at Rs 23,879 crore, with commercial banks contributing 94.4% and cooperative banks accounting for the remaining 5.6 %.

Intel was the only company he ever worked for as an adult.Apostol's first job was picking fruit in the fields of Yuma County, California, alongside his parents. Eventually, his dad started doing workforce development for migrants and then tax preparation for Spanish-speaking workers and agricultural contractors.When one of his dad's clients was audited, Apostol, who had started to learn how to program computers, turned handwritten mileage records into a neat chart. The IRS agents told him it was the best they'd ever seen, and Apostol got hooked on computers.Apostol joined Intel in 1996. From inside Intel, he's seen every phase of the internet since nearly the beginning. He said a longer lens gives him perspective.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-struggles-qualcomm-deal-chip-industry-turmoil-2024-9">Intel's situation</a> is no great tragedy, according to Apostol."The world is just changing and that is good. Intel will ultimately find its place where it needs to be," he said. After a vacation, Apostol is sticking with semiconductors, but he and some colleagues are headed in a more entrepreneurial direction.Though Intel has struggled to maintain its once leading-edge status, Apostol said there is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-ai-chip-semiconductors-tsmc-intel-jobs-arizona-2024-2">window of creativity</a> in the semiconductor space that he hasn't seen in a long time as investors and consumers alike become aware of the vital role of chips in their everyday lives."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-competition-sambanova-groq-cerebras-show-faster-inference-speed-2024-9">Chip design</a> is going to explode," Apostol said. He and five colleagues who also took the buyouts want to apply their expertise in chip-making consulting for businesses and even <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sovereign-clouds-explained-data-center-ai-national-security-vultr-2024-10">countries</a> looking to enter the industry.At 54 years old, and with both of his kids in college and away from home, he has the time and the energy to take the leap, he said. He hopes Intel finds its way to similar boldness again."If I worry about anything it's Intel becoming complacent and deciding to think small — to stop looking for the next great thing," Apostol said.<h2 id="22be38cf-517d-4e34-a89c-5f46756eb17e">Turning a good living into a good retirement</h2>Sumit Guha, a former transfer technology manager at Intel, is founding a new venture too, but with more altruistic aims.Over his 24 years at Intel, Guha used his spare time to develop a wealth management strategy based on the philosophies of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-warren-buffe">Warren Buffet</a>.He's shared his strategy with friends and colleagues over the years, but it wasn't until his 86-year-old mother was sold a fraudulent insurance policy that he considered scaling his efforts up. He fought for two years to get her money back, and that wasn't the first time his parents had been the victims of dubious financial providers."My goal is to teach seniors how to detect financial fraud. I have witnessed this myself. Old people are targets," Guha said. He plans to start studying to become a Certified Financial Planner soon, with the aim of providing free tax services to older adults and eventually starting a nonprofit organization that helps them manage and grow their finances.As Guha, 60, approaches retirement age, he's become increasingly worried about the state of his peers' <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-x-baby-boomers-savings-cant-afford-retirement-2024-4">retirement accounts</a>. AARP estimates that 20% of Americans over the age of 50 have no retirement savings at all.Intel still offers some of the benefits much of the tech world has long eschewed. For example, spreading out the timeline for paid sabbaticals has been one of the perks downgraded in the current era of cutbacks. But for Guha, some of his longevity benefits with Intel have kicked in recently, and the company accelerated stock grants set to be issued in December as a 'thank you' for enduring <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-ceo-takes-pay-cut-reduce-costs-prevent-layoffs-2023-2#:~:text=Intel's%20CEO%20and%20members%20of,Intel%20said%20in%20a%20statement.">2023's pay cuts</a> for those who took the buyout option."It's a gift for me to pull the trigger now," Guha said. He plans to offer tax services, financial fraud awareness, and investment advice with the aim of helping Americans achieve a safe and comfortable retirement, even if they started saving late in the game.<h2 id="7bec7e59-5a0c-4aa0-bd49-7e9d5e9b7d2f">Lessons learned at Intel</h2>Though several departing Intel employees expressed some frustration with the current state of the company, they still believe it can be successful. And they're taking some of the values and skills they picked up there with them. The company always valued continuous training, said Apostol.Choong said many of the skills she learned at Intel will transfer to her new life. Engineers are organized and good at dealing with complexity — the kind that comes with a wedding that starts in formalwear and ends with the entire party wearing animal onesies, for example.Choong also learned how to speak up for herself at Intel, especially when training in the fabs. This comes in handy when dealing with sketchy wedding vendors, she said."I have grown tremendously. I used to cry in my office because someone spoke loudly at me.
