From <keyword id="20852321" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="FO-trading" source="keywords">F&amp;O trading</keyword> (futures and options) and buybacks getting more expensive in the hands of the individual, to changes in TDS slabs for payments concerning life insurance, brokerage, and more, here's a ready reckoner for all that you need to know: 1. STT upped for F&amp;O (Futures and Options) trading This budget, in a bid to discourage retail investors from burning their hands in the highly risky F&amp;O segment, the government had proposed raising the STT (securities transaction tax) for both futures and options. Starting today, you will have to pay an STT of 0.1% on premium earned from option sales, as opposed to 0.0625% previously. As for futures, the STT is set to rise to 0.02% of trade price, up from its previous mark of 0.0125%. Notably, STT is levied every time an individual purchases or sells a security, which significantly increases its incidence and coverage. For instance, if the trading price of the futures you're selling today is Rs 1,000, you'd have to pay Rs 0.2 as STT today. Till September 30th, the STT applicable would be Rs 0.12. Similarly, for options, if the settlement price of your options contract is Rs 1,000, your STT payable today would be Re 1, which earlier stood at Rs 0.625 While this may sound super inconvenient for frequent or intraday traders, a recent SEBI study has highlighted that a staggering 93% individual traders have incurred just losses while trading in the F&amp;O segment between FY22 and FY24, with the total losses exceeding Rs 1.8 lakh crore during this period. Only a tiny 1% traders managed to rake in profits above Rs 1,00,000. Perhaps SEBI is thinking along the lines of prevention being better than cure? 2. Changes in Debit card rules for ICICI bank ICICI debit card users, who also happen to be frequent flyers, listen up! Starting today, you will be able to access the complimentary airport lounge service twice, but only if you have spent Rs 10,000 or more via your card in the previous quarter. So, suppose you've spent just Rs 8,000 between July-September 2024 via your ICICI debit card. Since this falls below the Rs 10,000-threshold, you wont be able to access complimentary airport lounge service two times between October-December 2024. 3. Changes in rules for PPF, small savings account The interest rates on various small savings schemes were left unchanged by the Finance Ministry for the upcoming quarter i.e. October-December 2024. For this quarter, Public Provident Funds (PPF) will earn you 7.1% interest p.a., while Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) and Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) will offer interest at the rate of 8.2% p.a. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113692667" title="Attention! Here's what's changing with your PPF accounts starting 1st October, 2024" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Also, these changes in PPF accounts will kick in from today: <ul><li>Have a PPF account in your child's name i.e. a minor? This account would earn the same interest as a POSA (Post Office Savings Account) i.e. at 4% p.a. currently. Once your child turns 18, the prevailing PPF interest rate, which is presently at 7.1%, will be levied. </li><li>No more interest earning via multiple PPF accounts! Starting today, only your primary PPF account will be eligible for interest. </li><li>Are you an NRI who currently holds an active PPF account, and you have not disclosed your residency status in Form H (used to extend the tenure of your PPF account by blocks of 5 years)? Starting today, such accounts will earn zero interest. </li></ul>4. Buyback set to get more expensive Buybacks happen when a company decides to buy back its own shares from its existing shareholders. What's in for the shareholders, you ask? The buyback price is usually higher than what is offered by the markets. You are eligible to participate in a company's buyback if you hold its shares on or before the record date that's set by the company. Starting today, buybacks will be treated just like dividends. This means starting today, the burden of tax payable on buybacks will fall on the shareholders selling the shares, and not the company. Buybacks will be taxed as per the individual's personal income tax bracket. 5. Revision of TDS rates Starting today, the TDS (tax deducted at source) on various payments you make for life insurance, lottery tickets and more is also set to change. The <keyword id="19994390" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-Council" source="keywords">GST Council</keyword> on Monday is expected to deliberate on a host of issues, including <keyword id="20118944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taxation" source="keywords">taxation</keyword> of insurance premiums, GoM's suggestions on rate rationalisation, and a status report on <keyword id="19939772" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-gaming" source="keywords">online gaming</keyword>, sources said. Sources said the fitment committee, comprising Centre and state tax officials, will present a report on GST levied on life, health and reinsurance premiums and the revenue implications. The GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state ministers, will decide on whether to reduce the tax burden on <keyword id="19894985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-insurance" source="keywords">health insurance</keyword> from the current 18% or exempt certain categories of individuals, like senior citizens. The deliberations will also happen with regard to the goods and services tax (GST) cut on <keyword id="23083492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-insurance-premium" source="keywords">life insurance premium</keyword>. In 2023-24, the Centre and states collected Rs 8,262.94 crore through GST on health <keyword id="22612491" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-premium" source="keywords">insurance premium</keyword>, while Rs 1,484.36 crore was collected on account of GST on health reinsurance premium. The issue of taxation on insurance premium figured in Parliament discussions with opposition members demanding that health and life insurance premiums be exempt from GST. Even Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari wrote to Sitharaman on the issue. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her reply to discussion on the Finance Bill had said 75% of the GST collected goes to states and opposition members should ask their state finance ministers to bring the proposal at the GST Council. West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya had raised the issue in the meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on rate rationalisation last month and the matter was referred to the fitment committee for further data analysis. The GoM had opined against any tinkering of four-tier GST slab of 5, 12, 18, and 28 % for the time being. The panel, however, had asked the fitment committee to look into any scope for rationalisation of rates of goods and services. With regard to online gaming, Centre and state tax officers will present a "status report" before the GST Council. The report would include <keyword id="20053837" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GST-revenue" source="keywords">GST revenue</keyword> collection from the online gaming sector before and after October 1, 2023. From October 1, 2023, entry-level bets placed on online gaming platforms and casinos were subject to 28% GST. Prior to that, many online gaming companies were not paying 28% GST, arguing that there were differential tax rates for games of skill and games of chance. The GST Council in its meeting in August 2023 had clarified that online gaming platforms were required to pay 28% tax and subsequently, Central GST law was amended to make the taxation provision clear. Offshore gaming platforms were also mandated to register with GST authorities and pay taxes, failing which the government would block those sites. The council had then decided that the taxation on online gaming sector would be reviewed after six months of its implementation. Sources said the Council would deliberate on the status of taxation on the sector, and any change in tax rates is unlikely. Besides, the Council is likely to be apprised about the ongoing drive against fake registration, the success of the drive and action taken against such entities. The total amount of suspected GST evasion would also be presented before the Council. The drive, from August 16, 2024, to October 15, 2024, is aimed at detecting suspicious/fake GSTINs and to conduct requisite verification and further remedial action to weed out these fake billers. In the first drive between May 16, 2023 to July 15, 2023, against fake registration, 21,791 entities (11,392 pertaining to state tax jurisdiction and 10,399 pertaining to CBIC jurisdiction) having GST registration were discovered to be non-existent. An amount of Rs 24,010 crore (state - Rs 8,805 crore + centre - Rs 15,205 crore) of suspected tax evasion was detected during the special drive. Also, the Council would approve notifications, including that of the amnesty scheme, announced in the last council meeting. The council in June meeting took a host of taxpayer-friendly measures, including waiver of interest and penalty for demand notices issued in the first three years of GST -- 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 -- if the full tax demanded is paid by March 31, 2025. To reduce litigation, a monetary limit for tax officers, to file appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal, the High Court and the Supreme Court was fixed at Rs 20 lakh, Rs 1 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively, by the Council. It also recommended a reduction of the quantum of pre-deposit required to be paid by taxpayers for filing of appeals under goods and services tax (GST).

"Health (approx. 35% of mix) can see pressure in its retail segment from rising claims frequency and elevated competition" the report stated. The report indicated that <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="22461357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="non-life-insurance" source="keywords">non-life insurance</keyword> sector is experiencing significant shifts, the health insurance segment may face challenges as healthcare costs continue to rise and more consumers claim their insurance, and insurers are grappling with increased payouts. This trend could squeeze margins and put pressure on insurers to find ways to manage costs while remaining competitive in the market. However, for the <keyword id="20224622" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motor-insurance" source="keywords">motor insurance</keyword> segment, the report draws a promising picture and added that it is entering a promising multi-year upcycle. This positive momentum is expected to benefit large private insurers of the motor segment, who are well-positioned to capitalize on these trends. The report also added that the motor insurance segment in India is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% over the financial years 2024 to 2027. The key driver behind this growth is the ongoing shift in the automobile market towards higher-value vehicles. Over the past three years, the average selling price (ASP) of passenger vehicles (PVs) has increased by 41%, reflecting a move towards premium segments. This trend is expected to continue, benefiting motor insurance renewals, which account for 60-70% of the motor insurance premium mix. "Motor segment amidst a multi-year upcycle (est. 14% CAGR over FY24-27E) as renewals (60-70% of premium mix) will continue to benefit from the underlying change in auto mix towards premium high-value segments" the report added. Despite these challenges, the report mentioned that the broader non-life insurance market in India remains significantly underpenetrated, with insurance premiums representing only about 1% of the country's <keyword id="19904293" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP" source="keywords">GDP</keyword>. This is relatively low compared to global peers, where non-life insurance to GDP ratios range between 2% and 4%. However, the Indian non-life insurance market has shown steady growth, with gross premiums expanding at a CAGR of 12% over the past five years, reaching Rs 2.8 trillion (approximately $35 billion). Notably, the private sector has outpaced the overall market. "India remains an under-penetrated market with non-life insurance to GDP at approx. 1% (vs 2-4% for global peers). Gross premiums have expanded at 12% CAGR over the last 5 years to Rs 2.8tn (approx. $35bn) with the private sector growing faster at 15% CAGR and improving its market share to 68%(from 57%)" said Jefferies in the report. Despite these challenges, the overall insurance market in India remains underpenetrated, offering significant long-term growth potential for insurers who can navigate these dynamics effectively.

Rising claims pose challenge for health insurance sector in India, says Jefferies

Life Insurance Corporation of India (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) MD and CEO Siddhartha Mohanty has said that the corporation is looking to make fresh investments of around Rs 1.30 lakh crore in equities during the current financial year. During April-June FY25, the insurance behemoth made an investment of about Rs 38,000 crore in <keyword id="19907577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shares" source="keywords">shares</keyword> as against Rs 23,300 crore in the same period a year ago. LIC earned a profit of Rs 15,500 crore from its investments in equity markets during the first quarter. The profit from its investment was higher by 13.5 % quarter-on-quarter. "We are surely looking at the markets and price movements...we are looking to invest a good amount at least whatever we had invested in last financial year...LIC invested around Rs 1.32 lakh crore in FY'24," he said. The <keyword id="19913381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market" source="keywords">market</keyword> value of LIC's investment in stocks of various <keyword id="20027214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="companies" source="keywords">companies</keyword> stood at around Rs 15 lakh crore at the end of June, he said. LIC has exposure in 282 companies through investment in their shares as of June 30, 2024. The <keyword id="20340200" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="assets-under-management" source="keywords">Assets Under Management</keyword> (<keyword id="20019621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AUM" source="keywords">AUM</keyword>) increased to Rs 53,58,781 crore as of June-end as compared to Rs 46,11,067 crore at the end of the same quarter the previous year, registering an increase of 16.22 %. Total investment grew by Rs 7,30,662 crore, from Rs 42,44,852 crore in March 2023 to Rs 49,75,514 crore as of March 31, 2024. The total equity investment portfolio constitutes Rs 12,39,740 crore as against Rs 8,39,662 crore in 2022-23, whereas other investments constitute Rs 37,35,774 crore as against Rs 34,05,190 crore in 2022-23. For the June quarter 2024, LIC reported a 10% increase in net profit to Rs 10,461 crore as against Rs 9,544 crore in the year-ago period. Total income increased to Rs 2,10,910 crore during the latest June quarter as against Rs 1,88,749 crore in the year-ago period. Total premium income for the quarter increased 16 % to Rs 1,13,770 crore as compared to Rs 98,363 crore in the same quarter a year ago.

Mcap of 8 of top-10 most valued firms erodes by Rs 1.66 lakh cr; Reliance, LIC biggest laggards

New Delhi: Shares of <keyword id="19903587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Life-Insurance-Corporation-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Life Insurance Corporation of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Life Insurance Corporation of India">Life Insurance Corporation of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6367143" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="LIC" source="Orion">LIC</keyword>) climbed 3 per cent on Friday after the company reported a 10 per cent rise in net profit to Rs 10,461 crore in the June 2024 quarter. The stock jumped 3 per cent to Rs 1,159.60 on the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords">BSE</keyword>. At the NSE, it climbed 3 per cent to Rs 1,160 apiece. The state-owned life insurance behemoth had a net profit of Rs 9,544 crore in the year-ago period. The total income increased to Rs 2,10,910 crore during the latest June quarter as against Rs 1,88,749 crore in the year-ago period, LIC said in a regulatory filing on Thursday. <keyword id="22725292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lic-md" source="keywords">LIC MD</keyword> and CEO Siddhartha Mohanty said the Assets Under Management (AUM) increased to Rs 53,58,781 crore as on June 30, as compared to Rs 46,11,067 crore at the end of same quarter previous year, registering an increase of 16.22 per cent. The total premium income for the quarter increased by 16 per cent to Rs 1,13,770 crore, as compared to Rs 98,363 crore in the same quarter a year ago. Asked about entry into the health insurance business, he said, LIC is exploring the option of picking up majority stakes in a standalone health insurance company.

With just 2 days to go before finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the union budget 2024, various sectors are abuzz with their expectations from the first full fledged budget to be presented under PM Modi's third consecutive term. Most experts anticipate the budget to focus heavily on boosting consumer demand and accelerating infrastructure development. In fact, president Murmu has already hinted that the budget will be historic, both in its scope and announcements. As such, what is it that the Indian insurance industry, driven by IRDA's vision of "Insurance for all by 2047" want from this budget? Lets find out <h2>Capture the <keyword id="21409017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annuity-market" source="keywords">annuity market</keyword> </h2>Subhrajit Mukhopadhyay, Executive Director, Edelweiss <keyword id="19936531" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="life-insurance" source="keywords">Life Insurance</keyword> anticipates that the upcoming budget should tackle the issue of how annuities are taxed. Currently, they are completely taxable in the hands of customers, which reduce its attractiveness, vis a vis other retirement planning options like NPS (National Pension System). According to a recent report by UNFPA, the population of number of individuals in the country who are aged 60 or more is set to double to around 346 million in the next 30 years. As such, it becomes all the more important to create awareness regarding retirement planning, and ensuring the aged have a secure, stable source of income in their twilight years, which is where annuities come in. "India’s vast ageing population underlines its burgeoning pension and annuity market. Annuity caters to the key dilemma of a pensioner, for a life-long pension at a steady, guaranteed rate and exposes the investors to a reinvestment rate risk especially in a volatile interest rate scenario. Annuities are the only solution, which provide complete protection from the perspective of living longer (i.e. outliving one’s corpus), by providing a regular flow of income throughout one’s lifetime, purchased in lieu of a single lump-sum amount. Currently, tax incentive is offered for people to accumulate corpus in NPS under Section 80CCD (1b ). A similar incentive may also be extended to annuities", noted Mukhopadhyay <h2>Separate sops for <keyword id="19894985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-insurance" source="keywords">health insurance</keyword> premiums </h2>One of the most vocal demands of the insurance industry at the moment is to increase the tax deduction limit for premiums paid towards life and health insurance. At present, individuals aged below 60 can claim an annual deduction of up to Rs 25,000 towards health insurance premiums paid for self, spouse or children. The limit goes up to Rs 50,000 in case of senior citizens. Mr. Rakesh Goyal, Managing Director, Probusinsurance.com hopes that the budget will raise this limit to Rs 50,000 for self, spouse, and children, and Rs 1 lakh for senior citizens. Anup Rau Managing Director &amp; Chief Executive Officer of Future Generali India Insurance Company Limited, agrees to this. “Making insurance products affordable and accessible to masses will be crucial to ensure India achieves “Insurance for All by 2047” – a goal set by IRDAI - and this calls for certain <keyword id="20071222" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-incentives" source="keywords">tax incentives</keyword>. The deduction limit on health insurance premium under Section 80D has remained unchanged for the past nine years despite the fact that there has been a significant rise in healthcare costs across the country. Interestingly, India, which surpasses South Asian peers with a medical inflation rate of 14%, last witnessed an enhancement in the deduction limit in 2015-16. Also, these benefits need to be extended to the new tax regime as well since increasing health <keyword id="20998941" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="insurance-penetration" source="keywords">insurance penetration</keyword> is critical", he adds. Goyal goes a step ahead, and advocates for creating a separate exemption limit for insurance premiums, in addition to the existing threshold of Rs 1,50,000. "Right now, Indians get a tax exemption of Rs 1.5 lakh every year, but it's crowded with various financial products. We would expect the limit to increase or to establish a separate exemption limit specifically for life insurance premiums. This move would help increase countrywide insurance penetration", says Goyal. Krishnan Ramachandran, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD&amp;CEO) of Niva Bupa Health Insurance also advocates for the 80D tax exemption to be linked to inflation and revised periodically. Also, per him, tax exemptions should also extend to dependent family members like siblings. Syed Meraj Naqvi,CEO &amp; Principal Officer, Riskbirbal Insurance Brokers also thinks on similar lines. "Adding a portion of medical insurance premiums for tax relief alongside the current 1,50,000 deduction limit would not only ease financial burdens but also encourage the younger generation to embrace saving habits. It’s about nurturing a mindset of financial responsibility while ensuring adequate healthcare coverage for all", he notes. Parimal Heda, Chief Investment Officer, Go Digit General Insurance believes that a good way to increase insurance coverage amongst young individuals is by offering a significant tax discount. "This could also be considered particularly for first-time health insurance buyers, especially youngsters. A tax exemption of 200% of the premium amount can be considered under chapter VIA. This can later be reduced in a phased manner of four years to make the same at par with the existing tax benefit provided under Section 80D", Heda observes. <h2>Don't overlook home, vehicle insurance </h2>Even though motor insurance, which makes up for around 50% of the non-life insurance industry (sans health) grew at around 12.9% in FY24, touching Rs 91,781.3 crore, over 50% of vehicles don’t even have a third-party (TP) motor insurance. To counter this, Heda suggests a one-time tax exemption can be offered to people to renew their lapsed TP policy. Additionally, given the increasing frequency of natural calamities adversely impacting human property, it is necessary to increase home insurance penetration to protect homeowners. Per Heda, the government, with the help of RERA can make home insurance mandatory for new homeowners, for which a tax deduction of up to Rs 25,000 can also be considered on home insurance premiums. However, a word of advice. Do not wait for tax breaks, or budget announcements to buy a life, or health insurance in case you already don't have one. Get one right away!

LIC's stock has gained nearly 79% from Rs 620 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 1,109.15 at the closing on Tuesday, according to stock exchange data. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co delivered a return of 12%, considering its stock price rise from Rs 582 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 654.10 on June 16, 2024. Over the past one year, <keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI" source="keywords">SBI</keyword> Life Insurance shares have risen from Rs 1,314 to Rs 1,621.20, delivering a return of 23%. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

During the day, it zoomed 996.17 points, or 1.24 per cent, to hit an all-time high of 80,893.51. The market capitalisation (mcap) of TCS surged Rs 62,393.92 crore to Rs 15,14,133.45 crore. In its master circular dated 12th June, 2024, the insurance watchdog laid out a slew of customer-friendly directives for life insurance companies to follow with immediate effect. Read on to know all about how these new rules will impact you : <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Customer information sheet" comment="subhead" text="Customer information sheet"><keyword id="22033784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="customer-information-sheet" source="keywords">Customer information sheet</keyword></cmsannotation> Going ahead, all life insurance companies will have to mandatorily provide their policyholders with a CIS, or Customer Information Sheet. This will serve to explain to them the basic features of the policy in very simple terms, and will include essential details like sum assured, benefits, policy loan options, free-look period and procedures for making claims and redressing grievances. In addition, benefits payable to the policyholder if they survive the policy tenure (maturity benefits), upon death and surrender of policy should also be clearly spelt out. Along with this, the policyholders are also entitled to a customised illustration of how the policy will benefit them while they are being sold the policy. CIS should also be made available to the policyholder in their local language on request. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Free-look and grace period" comment="subhead" text="Free-look and grace period"><keyword id="22053620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Free-look-and-Grace-Period" source="Orion">Free-look and grace period</keyword></cmsannotation> Policyholders will now have a 30-day window from the day they receive the policy document to review and cancel the policy if they want. If the policy is cancelled within this period, they will be entitled to a full premium refund. Earlier, this period only lasted for 15 days. For grace period, which basically refers to the additional, penalty-free window given to the policyholder to make premium payment post due date to avoid losing coverage, the windows will differ depending on premium payment frequency. If you pay the policy premiums on a monthly basis, you will get a 15-day grace period. For premium payments made on a quarterly/half-yearly or annual basis, the grace period will be of 30 days. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word" comment="subhead" text="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word">Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word</cmsannotation> The insurer is bound to comply with the <keyword id="960887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insurance-Ombudsman" source="Orion">Insurance Ombudsman</keyword>’s award within 30 days of receiving the same. In case the same is violated, the insurer will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 per day to the complainant. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Higher value on early policy surrender" comment="subhead" text="Higher value on early policy surrender">Higher value on early policy surrender</cmsannotation> Often, policyholders ended up with a low, negligible amount as refund upon surrendering their insurance policy. This is set to change with <keyword id="21879234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRDA" source="keywords">IRDA</keyword>’s latest directives. Now, policyholders will be eligible for <keyword id="885219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrender-value" source="Orion">surrender value</keyword> even if they decide to surrender their policy after just one year. Previously, only 50% of <keyword id="2939473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="policy-premium" source="Orion">policy premium</keyword> would be refunded, provided the policyholders surrendered their policy between years 4-7 of the policy tenure. Moreover, they would lose the entire premium amount if they surrendered their policy within a year. Customers will also be entitled to higher special surrender value (SSV) from now on. This SSV should be at least equivalent to the expected present one of the these three: <ol><li>Paid up sum assured, or present value of your sum assured after you stop paying premiums</li><li>Paid up future benefits</li><li>Accrued benefits</li></ol>Also, it will be compulsory for life insurers to offer loans to policyholders as per the eligible surrender value of the policy. Says Vivek Jain, Head, Investments, Policybazaar.com, "The provision for higher Surrender Value (SV), calculated at a prevailing 10-year government securities rate with a limited spread, significantly increases the value returned to policyholders in the event of a policy surrender, after the completion of first year. The mandatory facility of policy loans across all life insurance savings products and the allowance of partial withdrawals under pension products will provide vital financial flexibility, which will enable policyholders to meet liquidity needs and specific financial goals. These measures will certainly enhance trust and transparency in the industry." <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products" comment="subhead" text="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products">Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products</cmsannotation> Policyholders will be allowed to make partial withdrawals, provided they have 3 years of continuous coverage under their insurance-cum-pension plan. Also, these withdrawals cannot be more than 25% of the total premiums paid till date. The insurer cannot use this withdrawal towards making any adjustments in the policy's sum assured. However, this withdrawal will only be allowed for specific situations, like funding children’s higher education/marriage, constructing a house, treating critical illnesses, starting a new venture or for skill development purposes.

However, the market valuation of ITC declined Rs 436.97 crore to Rs 5,44,458.70 crore. In the ranking of the top-10 companies, Reliance Industries retained the tile of the most-valued firm, followed by TCS, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, SBI, LIC, Infosys, Hindustan Unilever, and ITC.

The life insurer had posted a net profit of Rs 777 crore in the year-ago quarter. <keyword id="20840570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-income" source="keywords">Total income</keyword> during January-March FY24 rose to Rs 37,567 crore from Rs 22,805 crore in the same period of FY23, <keyword id="19906098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi-life" source="keywords">SBI Life</keyword> said in a regulatory filing. Net premium income in Q4FY24 stood at Rs 25,116 crore as against Rs 19,897 crore in the year-ago period. For the full year 2023-24, the company's net profit grew 10 per cent to Rs 1,890 crore from Rs 1,720 crore in the previous year. Total income during the year rose to Rs 1,32,631 crore from Rs 81,598 crore a year ago. SBI Life said it registered a growth of 9 per cent in the value of new business (VoNB) to Rs 5,550 crore in FY24. VoNB is the present value of expected future earnings from new policies written during a specified period. It reflects the additional value expected to be generated through the writing of new policies during a specified period. Assets under management (AUM) grew 27 per cent to Rs 3.8 lakh crore as of March 31, 2024, it said. Solvency ratio declined to 196 per cent from 215 per cent in the previous fiscal. Solvency margin represents the additional capital that an insurer must maintain to cover potential claims beyond their expected liabilities. This serves as a financial safety net, ensuring their ability to settle all claims even in the most challenging circumstances.
