New Delhi: Life Insurance Corporation of India (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) has increased its stake in <keyword id="19984004" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-Maharashtra" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bank of Maharashtra" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Bank of Maharashtra">Bank of Maharashtra</keyword>, the company informed the exchange in a filing. In an official statement on Saturday, LIC announced that it has raised its shareholding in the bank from 4.05 per cent to 7.10 per cent following a <keyword id="19984002" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qualified-Institutional-Placement" source="keywords">Qualified Institutional Placement</keyword> (<keyword id="19984001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="QIP" source="keywords">QIP</keyword>). "..the Life Insurance Corporation of India ("the Corporation") has increased its shareholding in Bank of Maharashtra ("Company") from 4.05 per cent (pre-allotment) to 7.10 per cent (post allotment)" said LIC. The increased shareholding comes after LIC was allotted 25.96 crore equity shares as part of the QIP issued by the Bank of Maharashtra. Prior to this allotment, LIC held a 4.05 per cent stake in the bank. With the new shares, LIC now owns a 7.10 per cent stake, marking a significant rise in its ownership. The allotment was made under the guidelines of Regulation 30 of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations. LIC noted that it has complied with the regulatory requirements, including the details stipulated under the SEBI circular issued in July 2023, which governs disclosure obligations for listed entities. A Qualified Institutional Placement is a way for listed companies to raise capital by issuing equity shares to institutional investors, and this transaction indicates LIC's confidence in the growth potential of Bank of Maharashtra. Bank of Maharashtra is one of the public sector banks, and this infusion of capital through QIP will help strengthen its balance sheet and support its expansion plans.

LIC's stock has gained nearly 79% from Rs 620 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 1,109.15 at the closing on Tuesday, according to stock exchange data. In contrast, HDFC Life gave a negative return with Tuesday's closing price of Rs 646.55 on the BSE as compared to Rs 666.55 a year back. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co delivered a return of 12%, considering its stock price rise from Rs 582 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 654.10 on June 16, 2024. Over the past one year, <keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI" source="keywords">SBI</keyword> Life Insurance shares have risen from Rs 1,314 to Rs 1,621.20, delivering a return of 23%. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

Exposure to India's infra sector helps LIC, SBI outshine peers

New Delhi, <keyword id="6367143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="Orion">LIC</keyword> on Thursday said it has sold 2 per cent of its holding in <keyword id="44642" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sun-Pharma" source="Orion">Sun Pharma</keyword> for Rs 4,699 crore via open market sale. Following the share sale, there is a decrease of 2 per cent in holding during the period from July 22, 2022 to September 13, 2023. "Corporation's shareholding in Sun Pharma has diluted from 12,05,24,944 to 7,22,68,890 equity shares decreasing its shareholding from 5.023 per cent to 3.012 per cent of the paid-up capital of the said company," LIC said in a regulatory filing. The shares were sold at an average price of Rs 973.80 per share during the period through an open market sale in an ordinary course of transaction, it said. Sun Pharma is engaged in the business of manufacturing, developing and marketing a wide range of branded and generic formulations and Active Pharma Ingredients (APls). Shares of the country's largest state-owned insurer, LIC, closed at Rs 660.80 apiece on BSE, up by 0.27 per cent. Sun Pharma shares ended 0.8 per cent up at Rs 1,143.60.

We want to understand what is happening in the market and in the group, said LIC chairman.</li></ul>The LIC management will soon meet the top management of the crisis-ridden Adani Group and seek clarification on the crisis being faced by the diversified conglomerate, chairman M R Kumar said here on Thursday. LIC's investment into Adani group firms' stock has come under criticism by the opposition parties as well as investors after US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations against the Gautam Adani-led group, saying its companies manage and manipulate share prices, run offshore shell companies for round-tripping and lacking in corporate governance practices. "Though our investor team has already sought clarifications from the Adanis, our top management could not contact them yet as we have been busy preparing the results. We are soon going to call them to meet us and explain. We want to understand what is happening in the market and in the group," the chairman told reporters at the earnings conference on Thursday. "We'll be calling them in sometime soon to know how are they managing the whole crisis," Kumar added. Kumar, however, refused to give a timeline of the meeting between LIC and Adani group officials. LIC, which is the nation's largest institutional investor, is the second largest shareholder in most of the listed Adani group companies, with a cumulative investment of Rs 36,474.78 crore as of January 27, which in percentage terms is 4.23 per cent of the total public holding in those companies. But for LIC's Rs 44.76 lakh crore investment asset under management, this is only 0.97 per cent. As of January 27, this investment was valued at over Rs 56,000 crore, LIC had said on January 30, but since then these shares have further lost -- cumulatively about USD 100 billion or about 60 per cent of their January 24 market value. When asked, the chairman categorically said, "Our investments are still in the green and we have not made any provisions either for equity, which is the vast majority or for the debt. Our equity holding in the group is 4.23 per cent of the total public holding of those firms. But from our total market investment of Rs 44.76 lakh crore, this is only 0.97 per cent." He said the Irdai (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) norms on investment caps it at 15 per cent of a company's equity, but "we have some exception wherein we hold more than 30 per cent in some companies". "Why should we be making provision when they are in the green. To some of the group companies (ACC and <keyword id="105382" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ambuja-cements" source="Orion">Ambuja Cements</keyword>) our investments go back to more than two decades," he said. On January 30, LIC issued a public statement saying: "Our total holding in the Adani group companies under equity and debt a on date is Rs 36,474.78 crore. This was Rs 35,917.31 crore as of December 31, 2022. Total purchase value of these equities of the group companies, bought over the past many years, is Rs 30,127 crore and the market value for the same at close of market hours on January 27, 2023 was Rs 56,142 crore." LIC has exposure to all the 10 listed Adani group companies. However, it did not disclose about its exposure on an individual company basis. Even after the Hindenburg report, LIC invested about Rs 300 crore in buying 9,15,748 shares in Adani Enterprises' Rs 20,000-crore follow-on public offer as an anchor investor. Kumar said, the book value of its Rs 44.75 lakh crore market asset under management is only Rs 6.87 lakh crore, and according to the same book value its exposure to the Adani group companies is only 4.23 per cent. Since the publication of the Hindenburg report on January 24, three days before the launch of the group's flagship Adani Enterprises' Rs 20,000-crore follow-on public offer (FPO), the value of the group companies' stocks have lost more than USD 100 billion or about 60 per cent from their January 24 value. The FPO was fully subscribed but called off a day later by the management. Will meet Adani Group top management soon says LIC chairman

State-run insurance major <keyword id="6368369" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="life-insurance-corporation-of-india" source="Orion">Life Insurance Corporation of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6367143" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lic" source="Orion">LIC</keyword>) reported a consolidated <keyword id="6431508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="Orion">net profit</keyword> of Rs 2,409 crore during Q4FY22, down 17 per cent year on year from the same quarter of previous fiscal. The insurance company's consolidated income from net premium income during the quarter rose nearly 18 per cent to Rs 144,158 lakh crore, the earnings report shared with the exchanges showed. This is the first earnings results reported by the company after it went public on the exchanges earlier this month. It has recommended a dividend of Rs 1.5 per equity share for FY22, which is subject to approval of shareholders in the annual general meeting, the filing said. The shares of the much-awaited LIC made a weak listing on the stock exchanges on May 17. It listed on the stock exchanges at a discount of 8.62 per cent at Rs 867, from its IPO issue price of Rs 949. On Monday closing, it traded at Rs 836. The initial public offering of the company had, however, received robust response from investors as the insurance major's offer has been subscribed 2.89 times. It received bids for 46.77 crore equity shares against IPO size of 16.2 crore equity shares. The portion set aside for policyholders had been subscribed 5.97 times, employees bid 4.31 times the allotted quota, and retail investors 1.94 times, while the reserved portion of qualified institutional buyers had booked 2.83 times and that of non-institutional investors 2.8 times. The government had brought down the issue size from 5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. The <keyword id="14069986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPO-valued-LIC" source="Orion">IPO valued LIC</keyword> at Rs 6 lakh crore. To attract a large number of investors, the policyholders were offered a Rs 60 discount, while for retail investors, the discount was at Rs 45.

Not only policyholders, employees of the insurance company also have a quote for themselves with 5% of issue size reservation. “Policyholders may get a 10% discount on issue price,” Anshuman Khanna, Director at Value Prolific Consulting Services (ValPro) told Business Insider. Suppose the issue price of LIC IPO is ₹1,500 then the policyholder may get at ₹1,350 per share, which will give them an additional upside, said Khanna. Cap on investment Investors holding LIC policy cannot exceed their investment more than ₹2 lakh as most of such investors also come under the retail category. Such investors can bid under the ‘Policyholder Reservation Portion’ through the applications supported by blocked amount (ASBA) and the UPI mechanism. The much-anticipated IPO of public sector insurer Life Insurance Corp of India (LIC) may well lend more sparkle to the Indian stock markets this Diwali. Speaking to IANS, <keyword id="44532" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Disinvestment">Disinvestment</keyword> Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey noted the fact that LIC is a complex undertaking but the government is up to the challenge and will complete the market offering post October. "It may happen after October... around Diwali," Pandey said in the interview. He added that the government has already initiated its plan to clear all incumbrances on way of LIC IPO. In this regard, he said that the amendment required for the IPO has already been included as part of the Finance Bill, 2021 and will become effective once <keyword id="6354721" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="parliament">Parliament</keyword> gives its nod to the <keyword id="6360189" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget">Union Budget</keyword>. Presenting the Union Budget on Monday, Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said that all the announced disinvestment proposals including the LIC IPO would be completed this fiscal. She had first made the mega announcement of the IPO in the last year's budget. On the size of the <keyword id="8843196" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC-Offer">LIC offer</keyword>, Pandey said that the amount of shares to be offered in the initial public offering (IPO) would depend on the embedded value and the size. The valuation process is underway for the insurance giant. "This is an institution in which people have trusted and we don't want to break their trust. We have even asked them to be the owners (shareholders)." Pandey said that Amendment Act reserves 10 per cent of the total shares on the block for policy-holders. Regarding the requirement of listed public sector companies to achieve minimum public shareholding of 25 per cent, he said that a new rule is in the making for large PSUs having high valuations. A rule notified in 2018 had mandated every listed PSU, which has public shareholding below 25 per cent, to increase its public shareholding to at least 25 per cent, within a period of two years from the date of that notification -- August 3, 2018. The government has however extended the time period for compliance to the norm till August 2021. Currently, the government totally owns LIC and its valuation is expected to be in the range of Rs 8-10 lakh crore. Once LIC enters the stock market, it may be the largest IPO in Indian history, even if just 5 per cent of its paid-up equity capital is offered to the public. The top five IPOs in India so far are Coal India, Reliance Power, General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re), ONGC and SBI Cards and Payment Services. Each of these have been in the vicinity of Rs 10,000 crore. The Secretary for the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) also said that the government's core focus in terms of disinvestment will be strategic sale and the major chunk of revenue from offer of shares on the stock markets, be it an IPO or offer for sale (OFS) would come from the LIC IPO. And, according to analysis by Emkay, only two companies, LIC Housing Finance and M&amp;M Financial Services, in that space do not meet the conditions, under current circumstances, for paying dividends set by the central bank. However, M&amp;M Finance has clarified that it would be eligible. Simply put, CRAR is a measure of how much capital the company has compared to the riskiness of its loans. If the borrower fails to repay, the capital would be the cushion to absorb the loss. And LIC Housing Finance fails to meet the RBI threshold on this count. The capital adequacy ratio has been 14.4%% for the company in the last two financial years and 14.5% for the first half of the current one, the report said. The way out of this is that the company can raise money from the market to boost this figure past the 15% mark, and then, shareholders can expect a dividend. M&amp;M Financial, on the other hand, doesn’t make the cut on RBI’s benchmark for paying dividend because the amount of bad loans on its books is a little more than what the regulator likes. The circular has set the threshold at 4% while M&amp;M Financial has a net NPA (non-performing assets) of 4.7%. However, if the firm is able to recover enough loans by March 2021 to bring the metric below 4%, dividend may be back on the table. In the year before COVID-struck, the one ending in March 2019, the company paid a handsome 25.7% dividend to shareholders. On the other hand, in a statement to Business Insider, M&amp;M Financial stated “As per the circular, RBI has proposed a twin matrix of CRAR and NNPA and accordingly specified 4 categories based on a combination of both. CRAR of MMFSL has been above 18% for the last 3 years. Hence, the company will fall in Category B as per the matrix. Secondly, MMFSL’s net NPA at the end of September 30 was 4.7%, based on which our permissible dividend payout ratio is ‘up to 20%’,” the company said. This is not the first time the spotlight has fallen on M&amp;M Finance’s chunk of bad loans. The pandemic has only increased the risk of defaults and therefore the company too has been aggressively setting aside money to cover the losses if they occur. “As we progress, the next six months, which is normally the good six months, we would not see a decline in the gross NPA, and we will maintain our stance on aggressive provisions… if we start seeing things are not improving as we think, then we may take higher provision, whichever is necessary,” Vice Chairman and Managing Director Ramesh Iyer told Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/mahindra-and-mahindra-finance-managing-director-gets-candid-about-the-rights-issue/articleshow/77212386.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">in an exclusive chat in July 2020</a>. Axis Bank Axis Bank on Monday said it would acquire 17% stake in Max Life Insurance instead of the 29% proposed earlier as per a revised deal. Axis Bank currently holds about 1 per cent stake in Max Life and is the biggest banking channel partner for the distribution of the insurer’s products. Products sold through the bank reportedly account for 54% of Max Life’s revenues. The shares of Axis Bank ended 2% higher on Monday. LIC Housing Finance Mortgage lender LIC Housing Finance reported a 34% jump in its net profit to ₹817.48 crore for the quarter ending June helped by lower provisioning. The total income of the company rose to ₹4,977.49 crore in April-June 2020 from ₹4,807.21 crore in the year-ago quarter, according to a regulatory filing. The shares of LIC Housing Finance ended nearly a percent lower on Monday. JSW Energy JSW Energy said that its Executive Director Jyoti Kumar Agarwal, who is also the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), has tendered his resignation and will step down with effect from September 15. In a regulatory filing, the company said that Agarwal has decided to pursue career opportunities outside the company. The shares of JSW Energy ended 2% lower on Monday. Indian Energy Exchange Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) on Monday said its board of directors had accepted the resignation of its Managing Director and CEO Rajiv Srivastava. Mumbai, Feb 7 () Life Insurance Corporation is keen to unlock value in IDBI Bank in the run up to the insurance behemoth's IPO, which is likely to happen in FY21, its Chairman M R Kumar said on Friday. Presenting the Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sithraman had said the government would sell a part of its 100 percent holding in LIC through an IPO in the next fiscal year. Later, Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar said the government could divest up to 10 per cent in LIC, which has an enterprise value of Rs 36 lakh crore. The government aims to garner Rs 90,000 crore from the listing of LIC and stake dilution in IDBI Bank in the next fiscal out of the total disinvestment target of Rs 2.10 lakh crore. In January 2019, LIC picked up 51 per cent stake in IDBI Bank, making it the majority shareholder of the lender. The Irdai regulations bar an insurance company from holding more than 15 per cent in any listed entity. However, Irdai has given some exemption to LIC in regard to its holding in IDBI Bank. LIC Chairman Kumar said though Irdai has not fixed any timeline for LIC to reduce its stake in IDBI Bank, the Reserve Bank has given a 12-year timeframe. "We would not want to wait that long, especially when we are also going to be listed, but we have to find some ways to unlock value in IDBI Bank," Kumar told reporters here on Friday. He said once the bank comes out of the lending restrictions imposed by the RBI under the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework and becomes profitable, the bank would be able to attract investors. "Once they come out of the PCA and start lending again, I believe that their profitability will go up substantially and also attract investors," he said. IDBI Bank, which is under PCA framework since May 2017, had met RBI in January to seek lifting of the operational restrictions, had earlier reported. The lender had made a presentation to the RBI on its improved financial position. The government holds 47.11 per cent stake in IDBI Bank, while 51 percent is with LIC. This leaves practically nothing for investors, as its floating shares are only 3 per cent of the paid-up equity. Sitharaman had said the government would want to tap the retail investor segment to sell its stake completely. Kumar said the stake sale by the government in IDBI Bank will help bring in more retail investors. "Once the stake sale happens, people will show more interest in the scrip, because as of now with 51 per cent with us and over 47 (per cent) with the government, there is hardly any free float to give value to shareholders," Kumar said. When asked about the IPO's timing, Kumar refused to give any timeline. "Yes, the finance secretary was on record saying listing will happen in the H2 of FY21. We have to work it out. I don't know how long it takes for the very simple reason that we are doing for the first time," he said. Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar had on Sunday said the LIC IPO may be done in the second half of FY21. The LIC chairman said the listing would need some legislative changes in the LIC Act. "Basic amendment to the LIC Act would be required," he said. Explaining further, the corporation's appointed actuary Dinesh Pant said, "LIC (Act) has got a Section 24 where the entire fund of the corporation is a controlled fund which is under one fund. So how will be now be bifurcated. There is Section 28 about dividend distribution and so all those things have to be taken care of." He also said it needs to be seen how Section 37,which talks about the sovereign guarantee, is amended. Spelling out the priorities in the run up to listing, he said the focus would be on creating right perception in the market and to work on the process of valuation. He also said the policyholders and employees will not have any impact due to the listing.
