The aftermath of LG quitting the phone business – updates, warranty, repair and other details for existing LG users

I think these weird smartphones are really cool. They might be ridiculous or really ugly or completely crazy. This is how we know what people like, or at least this is how smartphone makers know what people like.</p><p>I think right now a lot of people are suffering from smartphone design fatigue, but it seems like 2019 is the year that the phone makers have decided to get together and just do something about the regular smartphone slab. There are the big smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung, and then there are the smaller phone makers like OnePlus, Meizu, or Vivo. The big guys, they kinda tend to play it safe, and safe is good, safe is comfortable. And the little guys, they kinda go crazy with stuff.</p><p>The first thing that comes to mind is LG's new phone. Now, it looks perfectly normal on the outside, then you go and find out what it can do to unlock the phone. It uses VR, not virtual reality, vein recognition. With vein recognition, the LG G8 wants to recognize the veins on the palm of your hand to unlock the phone. The G8 can do something else that's pretty weird. It's actually like kind of an old concept where you use gestures. You can twist a virtual knob for volume, for example, or you swipe left or right for your music or switching between apps.</p><p>Another much, much weirder phone is this Nubia wrist phone. There's a debate going on whether it's a smartphone or a smartwatch. The design is totally out of this world. It has a much larger, longer screen than the typical smartwatch. It has a camera. It has a camera that is front-facing, and I believe 5 megapixels, probably only good for taking selfies like this. I can't imagine taking a photo of landscape like this, really odd, really uncomfortable, and the Nubia also runs on Android Wear, which is a smartwatch operating system.</p><p>Now, let's talk about the Energizer PowerMax K18 Pop. It is a huge, thick phone, with an 18,000 milliampere-hour battery. Just to put that into perspective, most phones will have about 3,000, maybe even 4,000 milliampere-hour batteries. Energizer says that the K18 Pop will get about 50 days of battery life on standby, so it's not with daily usage. Apart from its massive size, the Energizer phone actually kinda looks like a normal phone. It runs Android. It even has, I think, a triple-lens camera system on the back. So in all respects, it's actually just a normal smartphone that's about the width of three iPhones.</p><p>Let's talk about the Nokia PureView 9. This phone has five camera lenses on the back. That count that five versus the three that we're just getting used to. The Nokia PureView 9 is supposedly meant to absorb 10 times more light than the standard camera. When you take a photo with the Nokia PureView 9, all the five lenses are activated and combine together to make a super photo, I guess. Yeah, we have to wait and see to use the Nokia PureView 9 ourselves to see if maybe five camera lenses are indeed better than one.</p><p>There's a new trend with smartphones, at least with Samsung's smartphones, which has this oval pill-shaped hole punch for the selfie cameras. Honestly, I quite like it. I mean, compared to a notch, it's really actually kinda better. It's not as distracting, has no interruptions around it or anything like that. The camera is off-center on the Galaxy S10, and it does make for that slight angle on your face.</p><p>Another big trend in phones is now foldable phones. We have different designs from Samsung, which opens up like a book. The Huawei Mate X that opens up like a reversible book, where the screen is on the outside of the phone. The thing is about the foldable phone so far is the price tag that is just crazy. It's just nuts. Where are you gonna get this thing repaired? Where are you gonna get its battery changed? It's all in the air right now. I do think the only thing that's gonna stick is gonna be the foldable phone. It's kind of a novelty-ish right now, but give it time, and I think it could be something really, really cool.</p><p>Do you really need all this innovation and folding phone and pop-out selfie cameras? No, you don't need it, but you want it. I know that. You guys ask for new and crazy stuff every year on the smartphones. Wearable and foldable phones are shaking up tech, making 2019 the year of weird phones

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>If you drop your phone and the screen shatters, you usually have two options: get it repaired or replace the phone entirely.</p><p>Chemists at the University of California, Riverside, have invented what could become a third option: a phone screen material that can heal itself.</p><p>The researchers conducted several tests on the material, including its ability to repair itself from cuts and scratches. After they tore the material in half, it automatically stitched itself back together in under 24 hours, Chao Wang, a chemist leading the self-healing material research, tells Business Insider.</p><p>The material, which can stretch to 50 times its original size, is made of a stretchable polymer and an ionic salt. It features a special type of bond called an ion-dipole interaction, which is a force between charged ions and polar molecules. This means that when the material breaks or has a scratch, the ions and molecules attract to each other to heal the material.</p><p>This is the first time scientists have created a self-healing material that can conduct electricity, making it especially useful for use for cell phone screens and batteries, Wang says.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Some LG phones, like the G Flex, already include a similar material on its back covers that can <a href="http://gizmodo.com/watch-lgs-g-flex-kinda-self-heal-after-a-knife-attac-1468100430">self-heal scratches</a>. But this material can't conduct electricity, so manufacturers can't use it for screens. Most phone screens have a g<span>rid of electrodes underneath, and when you touch it, your finger (which is also conductive) completes a circuit, telling the phone what to do.</span></p><p>Wang predicts that this new self-healing material will be used for phone screens and batteries by 2020.</p><p><span>The team will present its research at a April 4 meeting of the </span><a href="https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en.html">American Chemical Society</a><span>, the world's largest scientific organization devoted to the study of chemistry. </span></p><p>"Self-healing materials may seem far away for real application, but I believe they will come out very soon with cell phones. Within three years, more self-healing products will go to market and change our everyday life," he says. This protective layer is designed to prevent cracks from forming in the flexible substrate, which is the part of the display most prone to damage. The self-healing technology would allow the display to recover from small scratches, another common issue with foldable devices. <br /><br />In the patent application, Apple wrote that foldable self-healing could activate automatically when the device is being charged. New patent suggests that Apple could bring a foldable iPhone with a self-healing display in the future

<ul class="summary-list"><li>People are sending their friends "text-bombs": huge texts full of grievances about their relationship. </li><li>These texts are full of damaging therapy speak, overusing words like "toxic," and "boundaries." </li></ul><p>Kendal, 33, had known her friend for nearly a decade, but they'd grown a lot closer over the past year and a half after both going through breakups.</p><p>"In my mind, she was just like a completely safe place," Kendal told Insider, which agreed to identify her by her first name only to protect her privacy; her identity is known to us. "It felt like we were really healthy, like we could talk to each other about anything."</p><p>So when this friend seemed a little distant in person, Kendal sent her a quick check-in text. What she didn't expect to receive was "a huge novel" about all the bad things Kendal had done to her, including being a dishonest friend. </p><p>"I never would've guessed in a million years that she felt all of this," Kendal said. "I still have a hard time processing it."</p><p>Let's call these friendship grenades what they are: text bombs. </p><p>Text bombing — known in <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/06/stop-breaking-up-with-friends/674540/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">therapy circles as the "giant block of text"</a> — is an unfortunately popular way to express grievances. <a href="https://www.drisabellemorley.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Isabelle Morley</a>, a clinical psychologist, told Insider that she'd had many clients on the receiving end of text bombing.</p><p>"People get paragraphs with a friend explaining the ways in which they've been hurt and their new boundaries or why they don't want to be friends anymore," Morley said. "And it can be incredibly upsetting for people to receive, especially if they had no idea this was happening."</p><p>While friendship breakups via text, email, and <a href="https://www.themarginalian.org/2016/03/18/john-steinbeck-george-albee-friend-breakup-letter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">even letters</a> have existed for decades, there's one new element making text bombing so much worse: <a href="https://www.insider.com/jonah-hill-sarah-brady-texts-therapy-speak-out-of-control-2023-7">therapy speak</a>, where people use phrases such as "emotional labor" or "gaslighting" to call out behavior they don't like, often <a href="https://www.bustle.com/wellness/is-therapy-speak-making-us-selfish" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the name of self-care</a>.</p><p>One TikTok text-bombing template titled "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@zeinah.ramzi/video/7058166176249122095" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How to break off a friendship in a nice way</a>" says that while the text bomber and friend have had great times, the friendship is too "toxic and unhealthy" to continue. </p><p>While Morley thinks mental-health awareness is a good thing, she said, texts laden with therapy speak take it "a step too far," cruelly severing ties when other options for repair — or at least kindness — are available.</p><h2><strong>Labels like "toxic" judge a person instead of their actions</strong></h2><p>The problem with therapy-speak labels such as "unsafe" and "toxic" is that they criticize the person as a whole, rather than their specific actions, Morley said.</p><p>Kendal said that even if she one day mended her friendship, the way she was characterized would be hard to shake.</p><p>"She really focused on attacking what she thought my inner world looks like instead of asking for behaviors to change," she said.</p><p>Broad character judgments also don't leave room for nuance. Sylina Lyew, 40, was going through an "extremely traumatic time" that made her more distant with many people, including a friend she'd known since she was 5, she told Insider.</p><p>Because they had periods of low contact throughout their decades of friendship, she didn't anticipate receiving a text about how hurtful her radio silence was — and how it marked the end of their relationship.</p><p>Lyew said the text bomb, which Insider saw, ended with her friend saying Lyew treated her inhumanely and this was her version of "closure." After it was sent, Lyew's number was blocked — she had no chance to explain herself.</p><h2><strong><div type="image" title="A woman typing on an iPhone" height="2073" width="2764" msid="103987632" hostid="261" sizebytes="95380"></div></strong></h2><h2><strong>Former text bombers often regret the way they handled things</strong></h2><p>Many text-bomb senders feel like their missives are reasonable — at first. Morley said that they "feel justified in hurting somebody if they think they have been more hurt." After someone is painted as a narcissist, even the harshest measures are excused.</p><p>But the text-bomb senders Insider spoke with often expressed regret about pressing send.</p><p>Hilary Davis, 35, remembers text-bombing her college best friend in 2010 — when there were character limits on her LG flip phone.</p><p>At the time, a misunderstanding about meeting up to work on an assignment felt like "the worst thing that could have ever happened" to Davis, she said. But once she found a new project partner, Davis said she was "embarrassed about the way I acted and just so thankful that she still wanted to be my friend." </p><p>Because her friend had never brought up the texts, Davis went years without knowing whether she ever even received them. For this article, Davis finally asked her — and found out her friend had no recollection of this incident that Davis had been ruminating on for over a decade.</p><p>A man in his 40s whom Insider spoke with, and who asked to remain anonymous for the sake of privacy, viscerally remembers emailing a group of male friends he met two decades ago. As his friends got older and entered new stages of life such as marriage and having kids, he felt abandoned — and wrote so in their listserv. He still thinks about it.</p><p>"Even 10 years later, I feel the weight of it," he said, adding that he remained friends with some but not all of the people in the group. "There's a certain strain or awkwardness within many of those one-on-one relationships that I still feel like I have to make up for it."</p><p>But because he and Davis sent their bombs over a decade ago, therapy speak was not yet ubiquitous — and that may have saved some of their friendships.</p><p>"I didn't use things like 'boundary' or 'toxic' because in 2010, that wasn't the vocabulary," Davis said. Instead, she remembers focusing more on how frustrated her friend's actions made her feel, rather than writing her off as an emotionally unsafe person.</p><p>Thirteen years after her text bombing, Davis said she and her best friend still text all the time.</p><p>"The fact that we stayed friends for so long is huge — those college years were so minuscule that they just don't matter to us anymore," she said.</p><div type="image" title="Two women walking down stairs in a park" height="4800" width="6399" msid="103987634" hostid="261" sizebytes="2331000"></div><h2><strong>There are better ways to talk to a friend — and don't call it "emotional labor"</strong></h2><p>It isn't that friendships shouldn't involve calling out hurtful behavior — or even distancing when things don't feel good anymore. But the way it's handled makes a huge difference for both parties.</p><p>"If you want a relationship with someone, it's a constant push and pull and conversation and nuanced understanding of people's behaviors and forgiveness," Morley said.</p><p>Sending a huge text outlining someone's flaws doesn't leave room for that.</p><p>Morley said that using "I" statements and focusing on how specific actions made you feel — all said in person or at least over the phone — are better ways to address issues.</p><p>Another option is to place less emphasis on that friendship.</p><p>"It's also OK to just slowly shift how often you see that person or what you divulge to them," she said.</p><p><a href="https://drandreabonior.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrea Bonior</a>, a clinical psychologist, said that sometimes, text bombing may arise out of too-high expectations for friends.</p><p>"I think you need to evaluate whether or not you're trying to fit a friend that is a square peg into a round hole," she said. "There are different roles for different people in our lives."</p><p>But if the intent is conflict resolution, a text bomb full of therapy speak doesn't set the relationship up for success. </p><p>In Kendal's case, the end of her friend's text bomb said that her friend was committed to showing up for their friendship but would require patience because she didn't feel Kendal was trustworthy.</p><p>Kendal was less than relieved.</p><p>"I don't really want to have people in my life who don't give me the benefit of the doubt," she said.</p><p>Since the text bomb, Kendal has taken time to reassess the friendship — and write a message back.</p><p>"I haven't sent it," she said. "I always sit on these things and make sure it's what I want to say."</p>

'Text bombs' are destroying friendships, and therapy speak is making it worse

Several users have been <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos/comments/mqmwxe/what_is_this_bug_with_google_docs/">reporting</a> this issue on various forums, and I’ve been facing this issue myself, too.<br /><br />Now, it turns out this is being caused by a conflict with ad blockers and page script blocking extensions. Disabling those extensions fixes the problem.<br /><br />It’s not clear what is the exact reason behind this issue – if it’s the extensions or Google Docs that’s causing the problem.<br /><br />When it comes to Google Docs, the weird text formatting throws the text off-screen. It's <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/12148-sleep-basics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">common</a> and doesn't typically cause any health issues. </p><p>The time you spend in this sleep stage doesn't change much as you age. But studies do suggest <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK526132/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">men often spend more time in stage N1 sleep</a> and experience more awakenings, making them more likely to experience daytime sleepiness.</p><h2>Stage 2 (N2: NREM Sleep)</h2><p>In this <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/12148-sleep-basics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">light sleep stage</a>, your eyes stop moving, your heart rate slows, and your body temperature decreases. </p><p>You spend <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK526132/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">45% of your total time asleep</a> in the N2 stage, making it the longest in your sleep cycle. Adolescents ages 10 to 18 spend <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK526132/#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more time in stage N2</a> than other groups because of the hormonal changes associated with puberty.</p><p>In stage 2, your brain waves slow and your body prepares for deep sleep. You'll periodically have a rapid burst of brain waves known as <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/12148-sleep-basics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sleep spindles</a>. These short, intense bursts of neuronal firing play an essential role in <a href="https://www.jneurosci.org/content/40/9/1909" target="_blank" rel="noopener">processing and consolidating memories</a>, making this stage critical for remembering your day. </p><h2>Stage 3 (N3: NREM Sleep)</h2><p>N3, or slow-wave sleep, is the deepest stage of sleep. This is partly because <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK526132/#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sleep onset for newborns</a> starts during the REM stage, not the NREM.</p><h2>What happens when your sleep cycle gets disrupted?</h2><p>Since <a href="https://www.ninds.nih.gov/health-information/patient-caregiver-education/brain-basics-understanding-sleep" target="_blank" rel="noopener">each sleep stage</a> is associated with specific brain waves and neuronal activity, every step in your sleep cycle is irreplaceable.</p><p>"Not completing each stage every night can be as harmful as getting too little sleep," Hsu says.</p><p>Researchers believe sleep helps remove <a href="https://www.insider.com/during-deep-sleep-the-brain-does-housekeeping-2019-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">waste</a> products from brain cells, which would otherwise harm your brain and contribute to diseases like Alzheimer's. Sleep also helps you <a href="https://www.insider.com/were-finding-more-about-the-ways-sleep-resets-brain-connections-2016-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">store and recall memories.</a> </p><p>Hsu adds that people with a disrupted sleep cycle are also prone to more emotional distress, mood disorders, and cognitive issues than well-rested people.</p><p>According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/sleep/about_sleep/how_much_sleep.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),</a> adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night, while adults ages 38 and over may <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43587-022-00210-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">need just seven hours</a> for optimal function. It's backing CarIQ, a startup that's already exploring payments initiated from vehicles without needing a credit card.</li><li>But VCs at Edison Partners caution that while the funding is there for startups launching IoT platforms, it may not happen as quickly as we'd think.</li><li>While tech moves fast, legacy infrastructures and consumer behavior could delay IoT adoption. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summarymarymary">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul><p>You probably have heard of the so-called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/internet-of-things-definition">internet of things</a> (IoT). It refers to the network of everyday objects that are plugged into the internet. Think: phones, refrigerators, cars, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/particle-pitchdeck-that-raised-the-iot-company-60-million-2019-11">even lightbulbs</a>.</p><p>Talks of IoT often conjure up fears of Black Mirror-esque dystopian realities. If the things you use every day are connected and communicating with each other, it's easy to see how privacy and security become top concerns. IoT devices can collect data including location, spending habits, and health information.</p><p>It's that rich trove of data and always-watching connectivity that has caught the attention of one of the world's biggest payments players, as well as venture investors and startups. </p><p>And as IoT continues to mature, experts and industry leaders are exploring applications through something we all do every day - buy stuff. They're eyeing not only your wallet, but your car as the next opportunity to roll out IoT payments.</p><p>We talked with payments experts to learn what's possible when it comes to smart devices paying bills, and what some of the big hurdles to adoption will be.</p><p>Card network giant Visa has been investing in IoT payments for the past couple of years, Bisi Boyle, vice president of IoT at Visa, told Business Insider. </p><p>Boyle heads up efforts around connected payments and is leading Visa's charge to make sure the card network's rails are connected on the IoT. And for 2020, she's focused on rolling out invisible payments in cars.</p><p>"We saw the opportunity because of this explosion of connected devices that make up the internet of things that people use every day now" said Boyle. Cars are first on the list, she said.</p><p>The four use cases Visa is exploring with cars are fuel, parking, food, and tolls. Cars, Boyle said, will likely be the first place consumers will see IoT payments - and she predicts that capability could arrive as soon as next year.</p><p>"The idea is you're just living your life and all these payment experiences happen," said Boyle. </p><p>Take parking, for example. IoT enabled cars will be able to find open street parking and pay the meter, all without the driver needing to pull out their phone or wallet.</p><p>Visa is betting that fuel and parking use cases will surface in the 12 to 18 month range, said Boyle. And the card company has already <a href="https://usa.visa.com/visa-everywhere/innovation/connected-car.html">partnered with car companies like Honda</a> to start rolling out the tech.</p><p>Paying for parking and gas are just the beginning, though. Boyle sees drive-thru and curbside food pickup as the next step for the tech within three years. </p><p>Tolls are another area with potential, but Boyle thinks adoption will take closer to the three years. The idea is to bring the toll payments into the cars using IoT, as opposed to the existing electronic toll providers like New York's E-ZPass and California's FasTrak.</p><p>"You have to work with different governments and municipalities, so that's why that one takes a little bit longer," Boyle said.</p><p>And while these payments may be "invisible," Boyle does not see a world where machines are initiating payments without the involvement of the owner themselves.</p><p>To be sure, IoT payments will eliminate the need to take out a wallet, but users will still need to authorize payments made by machines. </p><p>"I don't mind it paying for me, but I want it to ask me first, and I want it to know that it's me," said Boyle.</p><p>"You have to design the payment experience in a way that people feel that they can trust it," she added.</p><p class="source"><span>AP/Jessica Hill</span></p><p class="caption">Fuel is one of the key use cases Visa is exploring.</p><h2><strong>Cars paying for their own gas</strong></h2><p>Like Visa, Citi Ventures' co-head of venture investing, Ramneek Gupta, is betting on cars to drive the first wave of IoT payments.</p><p>"It is a little bit nascent today - but I think there will be a lot more value creation there from the startup ecosystem-is the emergence of non-human or machine-originated payments," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/citi-ventures-vc-capital-innovation-payments-where-to-monetize-next-2019-11">Gupta told Business Insider in November.</a></p><p>As everyday devices like cars and phones get smarter, Gupta thinks IoT payments are inevitable. "It's the natural next step," he said.</p><p>Gupta expects these machine-initiated payments to surface in the next two to three years. Citi Ventures backed an India-based startup called CarIQ, which is already exploring payments initiated from vehicles without needing a credit card.</p><p>The startup raised $5 million in a Series A in June, and in August, automotive manufacturer Varroc acquired a 74% stake.</p><h2><strong><p class="source"><span>David Becker/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Smart fridges may take longer to roll out given they're replaced less frequently.</p></strong></h2><h2><strong>Product-agnostic platforms are what some VCs are looking for </strong></h2><p>CarIQ's platform model is one way for startups in the IoT payments space, said Dan Herscovici, partner at Edison Partners. The other is a product-driven approach.</p><p>"It's a very interesting conundrum, and has lived in IoT for a long time. It's the point solution versus the platform," said Herscovici. </p><p>Home appliance manufacturer LG, for example, could create an IoT-enabled washing machine, then partner individually with repair servicing companies or payments networks.</p><p>"That's impractical," said Herscovici. "When we look at startups in the space, we're looking for people that are providing platforms or ecosystems as opposed to singular point solution ones that are agnostic to the device in which they're being inserted."</p><p>While building out a platform can be costly, the funding is out there, said Chris Sugden, managing partner at Edison Partners.</p><h2><strong>If you build it, they will fund</strong></h2><p>While large players like LG or Visa are making big pushes in IoT, winners in the space are far from being established. Sugden thinks startups, flush with VC cash, can compete.</p><p>"I think that can come from the startup world because the $50 million and $100 million and the multiples of $100 million rounds are available. That didn't actually exist in the past," Sugden said.</p><p>Sugden mentioned the so-called SoftBank syndrome - the concern around megarounds and over-funding of startups like WeWork - but with a great business model, investors are willing to provide enough capital to chase what some might see as lofty ideas, he said.</p><p>"We're seeing those things get funded now in areas where you couldn't actually get them funded to really take the market," said Sugden. "Someone else would actually frankly steal your idea before you got the scale."</p><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock/PeterVandenbelt</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon's checkout-less convenience stores are rolling out across the country.</p><h2><strong>Cars aren't the only use case, but it will take time</strong></h2><p>And while IoT payments may materialize in cars over the next couple of years, Sugden and Herscovici think other use cases will take longer than 10 years.</p><p>While tech moves fast, legacy infrastructures and tough-to-change consumer behavior could delay IoT adoption. </p><p>In the home, for example, appliances like washing machines are purchased and replaced less frequently than cell phones. Some of these appliances can last in the home for more than 10 years, Herscovici said.</p><p>Smart phones, on the other hand, have high market penetration and are replaced often. And that paves the way for business to use IoT payments wherever there's a smartphone present.</p><p>Amazon is exploring IoT through smartphones with the launch of its IoT-powered Amazon Go convenience stores. There are currently more than 20 of the cashierless stores open in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. Amazon is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-opening-3000-go-stores-2019-1">reportedly aiming to open 3,000</a> Go stores by 2021.</p><p>Using the Amazon Go app, shoppers can scan their phones to enter, take whatever they want from the shelves, walk out, and get charged automatically after they leave the store. The ceilings in the stores are lined with cameras and sensors to keep track of your virtual cart. The hiring has led to some speculation the firm is looking into a sale. In its latest round of funding, which took place in January, Lyft was valued at $5.5 billion.</p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-pfizer-to-invest-350-million-in-china-biotech-hub-first-in-asia-2016-6">Pfizer is investing in China</a>.</strong> The pharmaceutical giant is planning a $350 million biotech center in China. Reuters says, the facility will be built in Hangzhou, and will mark the presence of Pfizer's first biotech center in Asia. Completion is scheduled for 2018.</p><p><strong>Earnings reports trickle out. </strong>Carnival reports ahead of the opening bell and Nike releases its quarterly results after markets close.</p><p><strong>US economic data flows. </strong>GDP - Third Estimate will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET before Case-Shiller 20-city Index and consumer confidence are due out at 9 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. ET, respectively. The US 10-year yield is up four basis points at 1.48%.</p>

It's worth noting that you'll need an iPhone 6 or newer with iOS 11 or an Android with the Oreo or Pie operating system. The brand has tested models including <span>Google Pixel 2/2XL, Samsung Galaxy S8/S9, and LG V30, but comparable newer models like the Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy S10 should work fine, too.</span></p><p><span>Next, you'll need to locate your car's OBDII port, which can usually be found on the driver's side of the interior on the lower dash. I used my mom's 2007 Honda CR-V to test the camera out (my vintage cars are too old) and the port was located almost directly underneath the steering wheel. If your car's port is not immediately visible, check your car's owners manual or do a quick Google search. Once you've located yours, it's time to install the camera on your dash and run the wire to your OBDII port. </span></p><p><span>In the box, you'll find the camera, the camera mount, the OBDII port adapter, power wire, and a tool used for tucking the wire in the crease of the dash and windshield. Owlcam says you can complete the entire installation process in six minutes, but I wanted to make sure my camera was precisely in the middle of the dash and that the wire was neatly hidden, so I spent a little bit more time than that. While all dash cameras, in theory, serve the main purpose of capturing footage you need as proof for insurance companies or police, they can be inconvenient to use and are often unreliable. Having to constantly make sure they're actually on and recording with enough storage space to capture footage can easily render many dash cameras useless when they're needed the most. If the green flashing light isn't enough to make a would-be thief think twice and they <em>do </em>break into your vehicle, they'll be welcomed by two bright LED flood lights to let them know they're visible and on camera. Once you're notified of the break-in, you can use the live video stream and two-way audio function to see what they're doing and to yell at them until they flee.</p><p>Although I haven't had to deal with car thieves or burglars, I can confirm that this function works well. <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ku1svf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Owlcam</a> pairs to your smartphone via Bluetooth as a way to detect you entering. Since I installed the device in my mom's car, I'd get a notification to my phone when she entered her car, which would be much more alarming if I knew someone else wasn't supposed to be driving. I tried the two-way audio with her and it works without fault.</p><h2>The bottom line</h2><p>It's been several months since I first received the <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ku1svf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Owlcam</a> review and it's been a great addition to the car. Aside from uninstalling it to test and review other products that require an OBDII plug-in, it's been used daily by my mom on her commutes to and from work.</p><p>Thankfully, I've never been in an accident, but I felt a lot more secure with Owlcam installed when I drove the car. Priced at $349, <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ku1svf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Owlcam</a> isn't the most affordable dash camera, but it's well worth it - especially if you're behind the wheel a lot like my mom. You'll have peace of mind knowing that your car is better protected at all times - whether you're on the road or not.
