LG Electronics India celebrated its 18th anniversary today with its LG Life’s Good Happiness Study. 
 
The Korean electronics brand arrived in the country in January 1997, and has expanded its products base to segments across consumer electronics, IT hardware and mobile communications. 
 
The event was graced by Managing Director Soon Kwon, Chief Marketing Officer Niladri Datta and TV Star Mandira Bedi. 
 
“We believe in making consumer experience more seamless and enjoyable. There’s a continuous endeavor from our side to innovate, and design products Indians love”, Niladri Datta, Corporate Marketing Head, LG Electronics India said.

LG Electronics just turned eighteen in India

There’s finally a definitive verdict on what makes India happy. The answer lies in five key factors: Passion, Purpose, Pleasure, Pursuit and their Context. North India tops the list with a Happiness Index of 141 with Chandigarh being crowned India’s ‘Happiest City’ and Delhi the ‘Happiest Metro’. 
 
In line with its caption ‘life’s good’, LG recently published the results of its Happiness Study. The study aims to find the dimensions of happiness and what makes India happy. IMRB International conducted the survey on over 2400 people between 19-45 years of age across 16 Indian cities. 
 
The study found Indians are most happy on aspects related to family. Other factors that contribute to happiness are more individualistic like authority to take decisions on one’s own life and physical appearance. The overall status of the country, things that enhance social status and social and cultural values come in as the bottom factors. 
 <keyword id="494374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Soon-Kwon">Soon Kwon</keyword>, Managing director, <keyword id="188506" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="LG-India">LG India</keyword> said, “The LG Life’s Good Happiness Study is a manifestation of our commitment to make our consumers’ lives happy. It has been undertaken to understand the social construct of happiness and what makes people of India happy.” 
 
The study comes in light of the fact that India stands at 117 out of the 158 nations in the Global Happiness Index. That is further behind war torn countries like Iraq, Palestine and Israel. 
 
Looks like there’s so much more to life that makes life good than what meets the eye.

LG unravels the mysteries behind India’s happiness

<keyword id="61562" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG-Electronics">LG Electronics</keyword>, the South Korean multinational electronics company, has set up its first manufacturing unit in India, where it would be manufacturing India-specific smartphone models, so that it can benefit from the fast-growing market. 
 
LG has already signed an agreement with GDN Enterprises, which is a part of New Delhi-based Optiemus Group, for manufacturing these models. Trial production has been started with two models, while expansion to include more models is in the pipeline. 
 
Optiemus Group, which already currently manufactures for HTC and Oppo, will be setting up a new plant under a joint venture with Taiwan's leading contract manufacturer Wistron. 
 While giving a boost to the <keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make In India</keyword> campaign of the Indian government, LG too would get a price edge, given that duties and taxes will come down by more than 10%. The move is also aimed to bring LG back to the <keyword id="1034848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-smartphone-market">Indian smartphone market</keyword>, a major share of which has been lost. 
 "The business has been a poor performer due to poor product portfolio. We will revamp the portfolio from this month. Our products are superior to competition which we will focus through experiential marketing," <keyword id="188506" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG-India">LG India</keyword> managing director Ki Wan Kim said. 
 
For a long time now, LG has been leading the Indian market in refrigerators, washing machines and microwave ovens; it has also branched into flat panel televisions so that it doesn’t only depend on home appliances segment. 
 
Now it looks forward to rebuilding the smartphone business where it had failed to attract much customers despite several attempts. 
"We will pursue to make LG a premium brand in India. The effort is to develop products based on consumer insights. While for existing categories we will focus on energy efficient products, we are also evaluating air and water purifiers as next growth areas," Kim added.

LG unveils new Gram range laptops in India

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-how-your-led-tvs-are-made/articleshow/57430748.cms">LED television</a> market in India, which stands at Rs 22,000-crore, is all set for a price war, given that three leading players- <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Samsung-in-consumer-products-segment/articleshow/53261996.cms">Samsung </a>and Sony- have slashed their product prices by as much as 15%, the steepest ever. This has been done keeping in mind the increased competition from smaller brands like Micromax, Intex, TCL, BPL and Sansui.

"Globally, there has been no decrease in prices of LED televisions, but the big brands are under pressure to reduce prices in India due to sales taking a hit with several brands entering the market and playing on price. This is across television sizes, but the maximum focus is on the 32-42-inch segment, which alone accounts for over 55% of the market," the chief of a leading television maker told ET.

However, these companies deny having dropped prices in the 32-inch segment, and maintain their stand that even if some price correction was done, it was in larger screen sizes as those models are about to reach the end of their lives. 
 
Rishi Tandon, senior GM for home entertainment at LG India, said that even though competition is always good, these three players continue to dominate the TV market. 
 
On the other hand, the head of a durable retail chain said that the availability of over 25 brands in the market has given customers a choice to go for value pricing.

It’s ‘Clash of the Titans’ in LED TV market with three leading companies slashing their prices by 15%

New Delhi, Mar 31 () To help authorities and people increase preparedness against Covid-19, electronic majors Samsung and LG have pledged to offer products and protective equipment like surgeon gown, face masks, glove, refrigerators, water purifiers, among others, to hospitals. LG Electronics India on Tuesday said it has also partnered with Akshaya Patra Foundation to sponsor one million meals to migrant labourers and daily wage workers, who are struggling amid the 21-day lockdown in the country. "With the rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19, LG has taken a pledge to support India's fight against the pandemic. LG is committed to offer active support to people in need in this current situation," it said in a statement. LG Electronics India will donate products like water purifiers, air conditioners, refrigerators and TVs to the hospitals for their quarantine/isolation wards, covering 50 state and district hospitals across the country. Samsung India, on the other hand, will provide preventive kits to hospitals, which includes a surgeon gown, face mask, gloves, preventive eye wear, hood cap and shoe cover. It will also provide infra-red thermometers and public addressal systems that can be used by the authorities at hospitals and other facilities, along with air purifiers in medical facilities. The India unit of Samsung said it will also support local police by providing cooked food packets to local communities around its manufacturing facility. "Samsung is committed to work together with the people of India in this hour of difficulty. Over the last few days, our teams have engaged round-the-clock with various governments, local authorities, and healthcare professionals to prepare a broad and meaningful strategy to win this battle together," Samsung India in a statement. COVID-19 infection, which originated in Wuhan in China, has spread across the world and claimed around 34,000 lives. Countries like South Korea, Spain, Italy, Iran and the US have been badly hit. In India, the total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 1,251, while the death toll touched 32. To combat the spread, the government had announced a 21-day lockdown that ends on April 14. Corporate India has been rushing in to help the government and citizens fight the covid-19 pandemic in India. Tata Trusts &amp; Tata group together have pledged Rs 1,500 crore - by far the highest by any corporate. Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani has also committed a further Rs 500 crore to the Prime Minister's COVID-19 fund, topping up over the multi-crore initiative of India's first coronavirus hospital, meals to the needy, and fuel to emergency vehicles. Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Infosys, has committed Rs 100 crore, while a number of other companies are also extending support efforts towards fighting COVID-19 in India. LG announces new 2020 Smart TV line-up starting at ₹14,990

New Delhi, Dec 15 () Smartphone maker Infinix will soon join peers such as Xiaomi, Motorola and OnePlus by bringing its smart televisions (TVs) to the Indian market in the first half of 2020.
 "We are looking at getting into new segments like smart TVs and expanding smart accessories. While it's still early to talk about product specifications, we expect to bring in smart TVs in the first half of 2020," Infinix India Chief Executive Officer Anish Kapoor told .
 He added that India will be among the first markets, where smart TVs will be introduced.
 "It's important to get the hardware as well as the software right. Work is on in that direction," he noted.
 Infinix, which is part of China's Transsion Group, focusses on the sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone market in India.
 Kapoor said while a number of brands have brought in their smart TVs in the Indian market, there is still scope for a lot of growth.
 A number of smartphone players such as Xiaomi, Samsung, LG, Micromax and Motorola also have smart TVs in their product portfolio.
 Premium smartphone maker OnePlus also joined the bandwagon with two premium smart TV models that are currently available in India only. Recently, Flipkart had launched the Nokia Smart TV in India as well.
 The Indian television market is estimated to be about 12.5 million units annually, in which Samsung, Sony and LG control an estimated three-fourth market share. SR HRS

Infinix to bring smart TVs to India next year

KOLKATA: Voltas established a clear lead in air-conditioners sold through multi-brand outlets in the past fiscal year, dethroning <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>, the first time in almost 14 years that a local manufacturer was able to topple South Korean companies in any major segment in the fiercely competitive Rs 50,000-crore consumer electronics market. 
 
This follows a year in which Voltas emerged as a front-runner in the category, fighting LG for ascendancy. The performance by Voltas came in the face of scepticism that success in FY13 had been a flash in the pan and that no domestic brand could make a dent in the dominance of the multinationals in multi-brand outlets, where 90% of total industry sales take place. 
 The <keyword id="6383291" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="ACS">ACs</keyword> made by the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword> unit had a 20% share in multi-brand outlets followed by LG at 18% and Samsung at 10.8% in the April 2013-February 2014 period, according to the latest data from market researcher GfKNielsen that tracks sales in the durables industry. Voltas is ahead by value as well at 18.9%, followed by LG at 17.9% and Samsung at 10.6%. 
 
This was the first full year in which Voltas sustained its leadership throughout, with LG having fought back to the top in some months in FY13. 
 
However, LG is still the market leader when counting sales in multi-brand outlets and its own exclusive stores. 
 
As per GfK-Nielsen, LG India has a 22% share by this measure, with Voltas at 18%, followed by Samsung at 14%. Since multi-brand outlets account for the dominant share of AC sales, it's a fair measure of competition, said Pradeep Bakshi, president and COO, unitary cooling products business group. 
 
“We are targeting more than 25% share this year. For this, we have launched more than 90 models,” he said. LG India seemed to reject the reasoning offered by Voltas.

	“We would like to mention that LG is market leader in AC segment and figures mentioned in the mail are representing manipulative and incorrect form of market share,” it said in an email without responding on other queries sent as part of a detailed questionnaire.
To be sure, as a delayed summer gets under way, LG will be more than ready to unleash the might of its vast marketing machine. Voltas will have a tough task as LG has been pushing back hard with higher margins this season, said a senior executive of a leading electronic retail chain. 
 
“Another area where Voltas has not worked hard is to increase the appeal of the brand among younger consumers, for whom Hitachi and Daikin are the preferred brands and may settle for a LG or Samsung if budget does not permit,” he said. 
 
Still, the turnaround at Voltas is big news at Bombay House, the Tata group headquarters, considering the many Indian brands that lost out after LG and Samsung entered the Indian market in the late 90s. 
 Homegrown brands such as BPL, Videocon, Onida, <keyword id="6369697" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Godrej">Godrej</keyword> and Voltas lost lustre starting 2000-01, with the South Koreans kicking off their marketing thrust. IFB was one of the few Indian brands to maintain its grip on the market in the niche front-loading washing segment until about four years ago, when LG took over as leader. 
 LG India has built the country's largest network of company-branded exclusive stores in the durables industry, with more than 1,800 such franchisees. As per estimates, such stores account for around 20% of LG India's sales, the highest contribution from this category in the industry. However, AC makers including Hitachi, Daikin, Voltas and <keyword id="345443" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Carrier">Carrier</keyword> have not focused on setting up exclusive stores since most AC sales take place in multi-brand stores such as local outlets, regional chains and modern retail. 
 
The executives most credited with the Voltas turnaround are Bakshi and managing director Sanjay Johri. The process started eight years ago when Bakshi was given the task of turning around the air-conditioner business by the board, with the condition that if he failed, the business may be sold. At the time Voltas was at a negligible 6-7th position in the market, with accumulated losses of Rs 140 crore. 
 
“Regaining market leadership has indeed been a Herculean task, considering LG was a tough market leader and the AC category has been one of the most penetrated with more than 25 international and domestic brands jostling for their share of the wallet,” said Bakshi, who joined Voltas after stints at Electrolux and Godrej Appliances. Bakshi’s strategy involved launching India’s first energy efficient air-conditioner in 2007, three years before the government made energy ratings mandatory, pricing the models Rs 2,000-3,000 higher than LG and Samsung. Advertisements said energy efficiency would lower electricity bills. 
 
He also shut two factories that could not produce such models. In 2012, Voltas launched its biggest success to date -- the all-weather AC range. He also employed one of LG's strategies to great success. “The AC business was traditionally done by dealers who would specialise in this field. LG had changed the game by selling AC in the general trade and we too decided to follow suit. We currently have more than 9,400 such outlets where our products are sold. This changed the game for us too,” said Bakshi. 
 
The air-conditioner business is now the highest contributor toward profitability for Voltas, encouraging Bakshi to draft a blueprint to expand the brand into household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines with a target to expand revenue to Rs 5,000 crore in five years. The business is the second-largest revenue contributor for Voltas, after electro-mechanical projects and services, with sales of Rs 1,835 crore in 2012-13 with a profit of Rs 173 crore. Total net sales for Voltas in 2012-13 amounted to Rs 5,514 crore . 
 
The brand lends itself very strongly to the domain of air and water, said Deba Ghosal, head of marketing and key accounts. “If you add our pedigree of cooling expertise, leadership position, and the trust factor of a Tata brand, the possibilities to expand into other categories are immense,” he said. 
 
Bakshi acknowledges challenges ahead such as increasing appeal to younger consumers. “But we are on the way. For instance, this year we have launched a smartphone app to control the AC and are also targeting social media,” he said. 
 
Bakshi is also betting on his new team, which consists of seasoned talent from the industry. This includes Rahul Jain, who joined from LG to head service, Ghosal, another ex-LG India executive, and Manish Desai, who moved from Onida to head finance.
