India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

LG launches new laptop series with innovative features in India

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), as per a report by the Economic Times, has sent a request to the <keyword id="47209" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="Orion">Finance Ministry</keyword>, claiming that the current tariff regime has outlived its utility and put the country at a competitive disadvantage against countries like China and Vietnam. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The argument" comment="subhead" text="The argument">The argument</cmsannotation> The input tariffs, according to the association, puts India at a disadvantage when compared to other countries. The body has urged the ministry to do away with the above tariffs and limit them to 0%, 5% and 10%. “Given the scale of electronics trade, which is close to $100 billion, we request that a senior level panel of two officials, one each from the ministry of finance and Meity be created to regularly provide accurate tariff classification for imports. Smartphone makers want India to take the fight to China and Vietnam further

The government on Wednesday said there are no plans for security testing for smartphones or crackdown on pre-installed applications, as the sole emphasis is on ease of doing business and boost local electronics manufacturing. Responding to a media report, Union Minister of <keyword id="9950217" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="state-for-electronics" source="Orion">State for Electronics</keyword> and IT, <keyword id="205969" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajeev-chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword>, said that there is no "security testing" or "crackdown" plans for smartphone makers at the end of the government. "@GoI_MeitY is 100 per cent committed to 'Ease of Doing Business' and is totally focused on growing electronics manufacturing to touch $300 billion by 2026," the minister said in a tweet. Electronics manufacturing in the country is likely to cross Rs 1.28 lakh crore in the next financial year, according to Chandrasekhar. "The mobile phone production in India had increased from 5.8 crore units valued at about Rs 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to 31 crore units valued at over Rs 2,75,000 crore in the last financial year, as a result of various initiatives of the government, including the 'Phased Manufacturing programme'," Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> had said during her Union Budget 2023-24 speech in Parliament. No 'security testing' or 'crackdown' plans for smartphone makers: Govt

Internet major Google will partner with <keyword id="19926050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foxconn" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Foxconn" meta.hostid="364" meta.entityid="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> to produce its ultra-premium Pixel smartphones for the first time in <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Thursday. According to sources, Google's partnership with Foxconn is in addition to its plan to make Pixel smartphones at <keyword id="21788190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dixon-facility" source="keywords">Dixon facility</keyword>. "As a result of the negotiations, Google will partner with Foxconn in Tamil Nadu to produce the Pixel cell phones and has offered to set up a factory," Stalin said in a statement. According to the sources, Google will also export smartphones from India. "Dixon will also make Pixel smartphones under an arrangement with Compal Electronics which makes Google's devices," a source said on condition of anonymity. The <keyword id="19963696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production" source="keywords">production</keyword> will start from September and the export will begin once the production stabilises, another source said. Emails seeking comments from Google and Foxconn in this regard did not elicit any immediate response. The company had announced plans to make Pixel smartphones in India in October. Counterpoint Research estimated Google Pixel's share in the Indian smartphone market at 0.04 per cent during the March 2024 quarter. "Google is estimated to register healthy growth of 30 per cent annually in 2024 owing to two reasons -- Google has started <keyword id="19914449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="keywords">manufacturing</keyword> it entire series domestically, which will help it save in import duties and sell cost effectively. "Secondly, the growing premiumization trend will work in favour of Google boosting growth for the only devices with flagship Android experiences in the market supported by strong ATL promotions," said Neil Shah, VP Research, Counterpoint Research. As per Cybermedia Research, Google Pixel has less than one per cent market share in India. "Google is finally waking up to India's attractive domestic market as well as its potential as a global export hub. The move to make Pixels in India comes at at time when a premiumization trend surging through the smartphone market. In addition to manufacturing, Google will need to address other parts of the puzzle, including marketing and post-sales support, including a strong service network. LG unveils new Gram range laptops in India

LG Electronics exits the smartphone business – here’s how its mobile fortunes swayed over the last two decades

New Delhi, In a fillip to 'Make in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>' initiative, India saw mobile phones exports worth $5.5 billion (over Rs 45,000 crore) in the April-August period in the ongoing fiscal year (FY24), government and industry data showed on Wednesday. As per the estimates by the Department of Commerce and the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (<keyword id="6816005" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="icea" source="Orion">ICEA</keyword>), accessed by IANS, the April-August period saw mobile phone exports worth $5.5 billion, against $3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) in the same period in FY22-23. According to industry sources, <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> led the India-made phone exports in the April-August period, surpassing more than 50 per cent of the total estimated figure for the first time, followed by <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword>. In the June quarter, Apple shipped nearly 50 per cent of the country's total 12 million smartphone shipments, as compared to Samsung's 45 per cent export, sources told IANS. This is the first time Apple has surpassed its South Korean counterpart Samsung in smartphone export volumes from the country, as it saw robust iPhone 15 series sales and demand which was over 100 per cent (or 2 times) as compared to last year. India is set to cross Rs 1,20,000 crore in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year, with Apple leading the market with more than 50 per cent in FY24. Driven by domestic manufacturing, Apple iPhones are also set to garner 7 per cent market share in the Android-dominated smartphone market this year, according to latest data. Apple iPhone shipments grew 68 per cent (year-on-year) in the first half of this year in the country. In the first half, Apple secured a 6 per cent market share in the Indian smartphone market and dominated the super-premium smartphone segment (priced between Rs 50,000-Rs 100,000) with a robust 63 per cent market share, according to market research firm CyberMedia Research (CMR). For the first time, Apple sold India-made iPhone 15 and 15 Plus on the first day of its global sales, with exporting those units to a few other markets as well. There are estimates that the iPhone 15 shipments in the launch quarter, which heralds the massive festive season in India, will hover around 65 per cent, driven by an increased 'Make in India' initiative.
