In an exclusive chat with Advertising and Media Insider, digital Influencer Bhuvan Bam, who is known for his YouTube channel - BB Ki Vines, shares his thoughts on the state of advertising today and the advantages brands can draw from working with an influencer. </li><li>He further puts light on the pressure of making something 'viral and funny,’ his brand endorsements philosophy, favourite jingle growing up, and much more. </li><li>The YouTube influencer has worked with brands such as Beardo, Lenskart, Tasty Treats, Vivo, Mivi, Tapzo, and will soon be starring in a commercial for Pizza Hut. </li></ul>Bhuvan Bam, who is known for his YouTube channel BB Ki Vines, is also a youth icon, an entertainer, content creator, an actor and also a singer. Bam’s YouTube Channel now has over 15 million subscribers and he’s coming up with yet another single called ‘Ajnabee.’He has worked with brands such as Beardo, Lenskart, Tasty Treats, Vivo, Mivi, Tapzo, and will soon be starring in a commercial for Pizza Hut. In an exclusive chat with Advertising and Media Insider, Bam got candid about his experience of working with brands. ‘One out of 10 brands come and say ‘Hume kuch viral chahiye’, he says, breaking into a chuckle. “Creators cannot make your content go viral. He can give his best to the content he offers, but it is your job to make it viral,” he adds. Bam revisited his childhood days when he got really excited every time ‘Chubti galti garmi’, Dermi Cool’s jingle came on TV. He says he never skipped that advertisement and would love to record the jingle for the brand again. From the latest advertisements, he says Fevicol’s Sofa ad is a masterpiece. "Fevicol's latest ad is simply genius. If we start making ads like those, nothing like it! Although they don't need to advertise because the adhesive glue category is now synonymous with Fevicol, I think all brands should learn from them." Bam says he works for brands that he truly resonates with and enters into a partnership only if he would use the brand himself. That’s how he selected Mivi and Lenskart. Being a shoe-collector, he says he would love to work with a shoe brand next. Talking about the state of advertisements today, he says, ‘advertisements in today’s age are too in your face.’On the other hand, when a brand works with an influencer, the digital medium promises ‘conversion rate '. “Influencers have a really transparent relationship with their followers. It is all about tuning; if a person is attached to an influencer (is a keen follower), he/she would buy a coupon and take some action. As long as influencers are honest and not selling everything, it is better for the brand,” says Bam. Bam further put light on the pressure of making something 'viral and funny,’ his brand endorsements philosophy, his favourite jingle growing up, and much more. BANGALORE|NEW DELHI: Even a decade ago, the name "Bansal" would have brought in images of coaching classes in Rajasthan's Kota, but today it is the common factor binding the who's who of India's fledgling e-commerce sector. 
 Five young men who answer to that name have emerged as trailblazers of Indian e-commerce, taking on global biggies like <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and eBay for top honours in the country's exploding market for online retail. 
 Online marketplaces <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and Snapdeal, apparel retailer <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword> and eyewear retailer <keyword id="1518229" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lenskart">LensKart</keyword> all have Bansals at the helm. Such is their clout that they account for nearly Rs 10,000 crore of the total online retail pie of about $2 billion. 
 
But their adeptness at trade and commerce is not a state secret. As a sub-sect of the Aggarwal community, the Bansals are known for running a tight ship when it comes to business and entrepreneurship. 
 "We (Bansals) have the math, <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="finance">finance</keyword> and data skills that are extremely important for e-commerce," said Rohit Bansal who teamed up with schoolmate and Wharton alumnus Kunal Bahl to set up online marketplace Snapdeal in 2010. 
 
 
 
The Bansals of the new economy also sport degrees from IIT and IIMs. The five Bansals with their four companies - Flipkart, Myntra, Snapdeal and LensKart - set up shop within the last seven years and control about 85% of India's entire e-tailing industry. 
 
But they have to contend with the might of $75-billion (Rs 4.5 lakh crore) Amazon, which entered India last year and is investing heavily. Heading the fightback are <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, 32, and Binny Bansal, 31- founders of Bangalore-based Flipkart - who met each other while studying at IIT-Delhi. Their company today generates about Rs 6,100 crore in sales, half the industry total.Flipkart is also the biggest challenge for Amazon, a company where both the Bansals honed their skills before setting up on their own in 2007. Coming second is Snapdeal, whose Rohit Bansal, 31, graduated ahead of Sachin and Binny from IIT Delhi. <div style="page-break-after: always;">

 "My ancestors from my paternal and maternal sides have all been <keyword id="80597" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Businessmen">businessmen</keyword>," said Rohit Bansal, who is from Malout, a small town in Punjab, just four hours from Chandigarh where the Bansals from Flipkart grew up. 
 
Snapdeal’s turnover is now half of Flipkart, and it is expected to cross the $1 billion mark next year. The Bansals are making a mark not just in horizontal marketplaces, but also single-category retail. Bangalore-based Myntra Designs, founded by another IITian Mukesh Bansal, is giving stiff competition to Flipkart in apparel, one of the highest-margin categories, where profits range from 30% to 50%. 
 “It has come full circle with me getting in fashion retail online,” said Mukesh Bansal, <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> at Myntra, who hails from Haridwar. His father had opted for a public sector job over joining the family business — ironically, clothes trading. “No family influence made me think of entrepreneurship. But the startup bug bit me in Silicon Valley,” said Myntra’s Bansal, 38, who moved to India to start Myntra in 2007. His venture is targeting sales of Rs 1,500 crore next fiscal from apparel sales, the largest in its category. 
 
LensKart, founded by another Peyush Bansal, 30, is considering selling his other portals such as WatchKart, BagsKart and JewelKart to a horizontal player at the ‘right price’ to focus on the eyewear market. “My parents didn’t understand while I was starting up. But they came around later. You have to understand that they are products of their generation,” said Bansal, who is targeting revenue of Rs 100 crore from LensKart next fiscal. 
 
RBI Chair Professor for Economics &amp; Social Sciences at IIM Bangalore Charan Singh says that a community’s dominance over a certain trade is a factor of its social interactions. “It can be likened to the Jewish community in the US which continues to hold top posts in US banking and technology industry.” Ashish Jhalani, head of retail advisory firm eTailing India, agrees. “Certain communities in India do encourage entrepreneurship. The Bansals and Aggarwals have definitely dominated businesses in India, particularly retail trading, for centuries.”

IIM Bangalore’s 435 students get 481 job offers in two days – IT consulting leads with one-third of the opportunities

If you have leadership qualities and talent to create wealth, you fit the bill. E-Commerce companies like Flipkart, Amazon, Ola, Uber, Jabong, etc are hiring and offering huge salaries. If estimates of headhunting firms are to be believed, they could roll out 500 jobs with salaries of more than Rs 1 crore each this year. 
 
As per the five search firms including RGF Executive Search and Longhouse Consulting, Snapdeal, Quikr, CommonFloor, Yepme, OLX, Junglee, FashionAndYou, Hungama, BookMyShow, Cleartrip and Lenskart are among companies offering jobs with one-crore-plus salaries. 
 
Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal account for a huge chunk of these offers. 
 
Siddharth Raisurana, Director at ABC Consultants told Economic Times the company conducted more than 100 senior-level searches for e-Commerce companies in the past six months. 
 
The executive search division of CareerNet, Longhouse Consulting, is looking at a dozen plus mandates a month. 
 
"We have 70-80% of our business coming from e-Commerce and expect to handle 180-200 mandates this year, up from 75-85 last year," Anshuman Das, managing partner, Longhouse Consulting, told ET. 
 
"We are filling in at least one position a day at the leadership level," GC Jayaprakash, executive director at RGF Executive Search, told the financial daily. 
He added that the companies were willing to pay a premium to attract top talent that would lead to wealth creation and high valuation if they go ahead with an IPO. 
 
Meanwhile, human resource heads of e-Commerce companies also agreed on the estimates. 
 "Investors are bringing hundreds of millions of dollars. We can spend it either on infrastructure or people. And that's what they are doing - investing in people," the <keyword id="231518" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Human-Resource-Head">human resource head</keyword> of one of the leading online retailers, on conditions of anonymity, told ET. 
 
The financial daily also reported that the HR head of another online retailer was currently scouting for such senior level talent for several of its revenue generating core functions.

Cupertino, June 16 (IANS) Apple App Store facilitated $519 billion in commerce and sales globally in 2019 and more than 85 per cent of the $519 billion total accrues solely to third-party developers and businesses of all sizes, a new study by Apple has revealed. The new study, conducted by independent economists at Analysis Group, found that the highest value categories were mobile commerce (m-commerce) apps, digital goods and services apps, and in-app advertising. "The App Store is a place where innovators and dreamers can bring their ideas to life, and users can find safe and trusted tools to make their lives better," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement late Monday. "In a challenging and unsettled time, the App Store provides enduring opportunities for entrepreneurship, health and well-being, education, and job creation, helping people adapt quickly to a changing world," he added. Of the $519 billion, the study found that sales from physical goods and services accounted for the largest share, at $413 billion. Within that category, m-commerce apps generated the vast majority of sales, and of those, retail was the largest, at $268 billion. "Retail apps include those that digitally represent brick-and-mortar stores such as Target and Best Buy, as well as virtual marketplaces that sell physical goods, such as Flipkart, Lenskart and Myntra but do not include grocery delivery, which is its own category," the findings showed. Travel apps, including Ixigo, Cleartrip and Makemytrip, accounted for $57 billion. Ride-hailing apps, including Ola Cabs, comprised $40 billion in sales, and food delivery apps, including Zomato, Swiggy and Freshmenu, made up $31 billion. Billings and sales from digital goods and services comprised $61 billion, and this category included apps for music and video streaming, fitness, education, ebooks and audiobooks, news and magazines, and dating services, among others. Games, the type of app most downloaded in 2019, was the largest generator of billings and sales within this category. In-app advertising sales accounted for $45 billion, and of that, 44 per cent was derived from games. Non-gaming apps that generate substantial in-app advertising sales are often free to download and use, such as Twitter and Pinterest, though others also offer in-app purchases to access content, such as The New York Times. Launched in 2008, App Store is currently home to almost 2 million apps and visited by half a billion people each week across 175 countries. "We're committed to doing even more to support and nurture the global App Store community  from one-developer shops in nearly every country to businesses that employ thousands of workers  as it continues to foster innovation, create jobs, and propel economic growth for the future," said Cook. According to the study, the direct payments made to developers from Apple are only a fraction of the vast total when sales from other sources, such as physical goods and services, are calculated. Apple App Store drives $519bn in sales in 2019, mobile commerce leads

Hindustan Unilever’s (HUL) senior employees are one of the best paid in the industry. HUL has 169 executives who drew eight-digit salaries last year, six times more than its closest rival ITC's 23 crorepati employees, and half of them are less than 40 years of age, according to the Economic Times. The HUL number is also 50% higher than IT major Infosys' 123 eight-digit salary earners and more than double of Wipro's 70. 
 
The firm’s annual report states, 169 managers, representing just 1% of HUL's total workforce, drew home a combined salary of Rs 310 crore. 
This is more than the total employee spends of mid-sized rivals such as Marico, Godrej Consumer and Procter &amp; Gamble Health and Hygiene. "For the kind of talent HUL looks for, the company has to pay top dollars as supply is limited and they have to retain them," Aditya Narayan Mishra, chief executive at CEIL HR Services told the ET adding that HUL has the highest number of crorepati employees in India. 
 
"Since they also create strong leadership within their organisation, retaining them becomes crucial," he said. HUL is often referred to as a 'CEO Factory', having contributed over 400 CEOs within the corporate world. 
 
Despite ecommerce edging out FMCG as the hottest career destination for B-school students, HUL still remains the most preferred company overall in the list for the graduating batch of 2015, fourth year in a row and as a dream company across sectors for the sixth year running, as per Nielsen Campus Track Business School 2015 survey. 
 
"At HUL, the ability to identify, hire, groom and retain the best talent has been honed and developed over several decades and remains one of the most important agenda of my leadership team," Sanjiv Mehta, CEO and MD at Hindustan Unilever, had told the financial daily in March this year. Salaries at HUL are partly linked to the company's performance in sales and profitability, say analysts. 
 
During 2014-15, HUL posted 9% sales growth compared to 7% in the overall FMCG growth with 90% of its portfolio gaining market share. Nitin Mathur, consumer goods analyst at Societe Generale, said: "HUL is unarguably the leader when it comes to understanding the Indian consumption patterns, across economic strata. 
 
Any competitor, either incumbents or startups, would like to leverage on this experience by hiring their executives." 
 
ET in May had reported that ecommerce companies could roll out 500 jobs with salaries of more than Rs 1 crore each this year, according to estimates by five search firms, including RGF Executive Search and Longhouse Consulting. 
 
Also offering jobs with one-crore-plus salaries are Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, Ola, Uber, Quikr, CommonFloor, Yepme, OLX, Junglee, FashionAndYou, Hungama, BookMyShow, Jabong, Cleartrip and Lenskart.

Google, Amazon, IBM and many more are hiring business analysts across the country

In 1995, <keyword id="3612226" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adi-Tatarko">Adi Tatarko</keyword>, a college student from Israel, boarded a bus in Thailand with a few of her college girlfriends. They were headed for the islands - a 15-hour ride from Bangkok. The bus was crowded, so the bus driver directed Tatarko to an empty seat in the back next to another foreigner. This stranger’s name was <keyword id="3612225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alon-Cohen">Alon Cohen</keyword> and he would soon become her husband and later co-founder of <keyword id="1291598" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Houzz">Houzz</keyword>, a $4 billion home renovation and design company that has global ambitions. On October 11, 2017, Houzz announced a strategic partnership with <keyword id="4519251" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="times-bridge">Times Bridge</keyword>, the investment arm of The Times Group, to dramatically expand its footprint in India (disclosure: Business Insider is a strategic partner with Times Bridge). If the relationship between Tatarko and Cohen led to the catharsis that is Houzz, then one could view their rapid expansion in South Asia as a homecoming of sorts. “We ended up talking throughout the entire 15-hour bus ride and spending the rest of our vacation together,” recalls Tatarko. She describes it as feeling like four dates at once. Three years later they got married. Shortly thereafter, they moved to New York City and, in 2001, to Palo Alto where their quest to decorate their new home led to the first iterations of what would become Houzz. It was a project built organically from need, a trait investors love because it reveals a true consumer pain point. Houzz lets homeowners browse and save design ideas by architects and designers, connecting professional and consumer so people improving and designing their homes can buy what they like from anywhere. For Tatarko, Houzz can be broken into four phases: side project, company, monetization and expansion. A SIDE PROJECT The idea for Houzz emerged sometime during the three years when Tatarko and Cohen were struggling to get their four-bedroom ranch house in Palo Alto renovated. Several months went by as they scanned through magazines and books looking for pictures that could match their vision. Once they found a design, they then had to search for the right products and professionals to turn their dream house into a reality. Each and every effort made reaped no results - Google was barely three years old. Facebook did not exist (Mark Zuckerberg had not even been accepted into Harvard yet). While it was disappointing and frustrating, they were quick to spot the underlying opportunity. Despite the mad rush in the consumer Internet startup space, no one seemed to have noticed the same problem they had. Houzz’s first users were 20 parents from the school that their kids attended, and a few architects and designers from the Bay Area. At that time, Tatarko was working at an investment firm and juggling the demands of work and home, managing two young children. Cohen was leading teams of developers at eBay. While the early days gave the couple the time to focus on building a great product and user experience, stacking this work onto their full time jobs it was very easy for them to lose work-life balance, and their kids would often notice it. “We sat down as a family and figured out together how we could make things right. Now, we have regular check-ins to assess where we are and adjust as needs change both at work and at home,” says Tatarko. While the personal concerns were being taken care of, challenges on the professional front were increasing. A COMPANY Both Tatarko and Cohen quit their jobs. They also realized more money needed to flow into Houzz if it had to expand. They opted to put in personal money - the idea of approaching venture capitalists was dropped for the time being. Instead, the couple focused on the quality of the services being offered on Houzz and continued bootstrapping in favour of providing jittery homeowners with exactly what they wanted so they could build their dream homes. Turns out a moral call they took years back is one of the major reasons for the success of Houzz today.

 Tatarko feels proud to share that bootstrapping ended up being one of the best things to have happened to Houzz. “By the time we decided that we should turn Houzz into a company, we already had a product that many people used and loved using. In retrospect, we didn’t realize that what we were doing was bootstrapping but it enabled us to take our time and build the company from the ground up the right way," she says. But not every feature they created was perfect. “For a long time, I asked Alon to kill the ‘Buzz’ section and to launch an 'Ask A Question' section on Houzz instead. He delayed it for a long time as he was working on other site functionalities,” says Tatarko. Alon was the only developer for Houzz at the time. When he eventually flipped the switch on “Ask A Question,” Houzz immediately saw hundreds of questions every day from homeowners accompanied by responses from professionals. “It was a lesson well learnt,” Tatarko says jokingly, adding what Cohen often says about the incident: “Sometimes small changes can have high impact; and sometimes you should listen to your wife.” But for all the focus on user experience and feature improvements, people could still not buy anything on Houzz. MONETIZATION "I remember taking calls to the office from people asking where the ‘Add to Cart’ button was on our site, or whether we could ship a freestanding bathtub they saw in a photo to their home. People saw the green tags we had on photos with product information... but still had to go to many different places to purchase the products they liked.” recalls Tatarko. This burgeoning demand from the fast-expanding community led the couple to introduce a home products marketplace in October 2014. The beta version of the Houzz Marketplace was launched in the U.S.. This closed the loop for people and became their one-stop solution where they could get everything they needed to renovate or design their home in a single place. Meanwhile, money was being poured into Houzz by investors. This had begun in July 2010 with a $2 million investment. By late 2014, Houzz had closed a $165 million Series D round led by Sequoia Capital valuing the company at $2.3 billion. More recently, Houzz raised a $400 million Series E round of funding nudging the valuation up to roughly $4 billion. With funding and revenue came expansion. “The third phase [of Houzz] would be establishing the infrastructure to be a global company and the beginning of monetization. We expanded beyond our small office in Palo Alto to other locations, including our first international office in London,” says Tatarko. They made money mostly through paid listings for local home professionals and service providers, and through the product marketplace. "We are now monetizing in many of the countries where we operate," says Tatarko. In India, however, she says revenue taking off will happen later; right now Houzz is focusing on spreading its wings. SCALE While the deal with Times Bridge was only announced yesterday, Houzz’s footprint in India is a bit older. A million customers and more than 50,000 service providers signed up from India on Houzz even before it was launched in the country. Indians were using the international site to build their brands, collaborate with clients and connect with homeowners globally. The Houzz team then decided to launch a custom site for the Indian market in January this year.

 This comes at a time when the Indian home design and decor market is poised to grow from $13 billion in 2010 to over $45 billion by the end of this year. The boom in the residential real estate industry over the last few decades has given impetus to the home decor market. Also driving the growth of this sector is an increased consciousness among homeowners about stylish interiors coupled with the means to actualize that desire. According to National Council of Applied Economic Research, it is estimated that the size of India’s new middle class will run as high as 11.38 million by 2025-26. This year alone, as many as 4,00,000 new homes will be bought across just the major cities and the vast majority of them will need to get their home designed. When it comes to India market competitiveness, Houzz already dominates the online interior design and furnishing space globally and is quick in embracing new technologies to enhance the user experience, something Indian <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> lack at the moment. “Designs from across Asia are some of the most popular and in-demand styles among the global Houzz community,” says Tatarko. “People are eager to learn from, buy from as well as hire talented Indian professionals. We’re excited to make Indian design and talent even more accessible to Houzz users around the world.” Regarding technology, Houzz came out with the initial version of View in My Room 3D within its iPhone and iPad apps this past May. Users can use it to preview hundreds of thousands of home furniture and decor products from the Houzz Shop in 3D, within their own homes, before buying. Last year, it introduced a deep learning tool to scan more than 15 million retina-quality home photos on Houzz to identify furniture and decor in living spaces and surface visually similar inventory from the Houzz marketplace. It’s also applying deep learning technology to natural language understanding to improve things like search, ads and recommendations. While a few Indian start-ups like Lenskart and Caratlane have invested in Augmented Reality to offer users enhanced experience, the home remodelling and design market in India is slow in adopting newer technologies. “Each market has unique challenges, which is why our focus first and foremost is on tailoring the experience and building our community the right way, based on the needs of the industry in India. This focus on first localizing our platform and building our local content and community is the approach we have taken in every market where we have launched, including the United States, and it’s working,” says Tatarko. But with so much going on, could this new phase of global scaling affect work-life balance again? Not according to Tatarko: family is never going to take a backseat. Whenever the parents get time off, they like to spend it as a weekend away together or just spend quality time at home. They are particularly fond of holidaying in Tel Aviv for its great food, beach, nightlife, culture, architecture and people. As the unlikely Thai bus pair turned Silicon Valley power couple makes mistakes, learns and moves ahead, Tatarko remembers what she said to her husband years ago when they started a life together: "When I married Alon, I told him life with me would be one big, fun, crazy ride. I think it has been! We’ve been together for more than 20 years now and our relationship has only gotten stronger. The truth is, we really enjoy working and building things together.”
