While the first comes to you as a part of your professional stature, the second is what you earn yourself by displaying responsibility, accountability, and decisiveness. Here are five lessons on leading, not managing: 
 
Listen to your team. Rule one A good listener is always rich because hearing the thoughts and inspirations of others helps a lot to enrich knowledge. Moreover, people feel good when they feel heard. 
 
2. Consensus is fine, but there's more leaders do Leading by consensus will rally a team around a common goal, but that alone is not enough to be a <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="leader">leader</keyword> and create change. Infact direction and decisiveness create action. You must guide consensus. 
 
3. Anyone can identify a problem. A leader is part of the solution Leaders don’t sit around and complain about what’s wrong. They drive solutions. 
 
4. Apologize publicly and criticize privately True leaders don’t just praise publicly and criticize privately. They are also humble enough to apologize publicly and gloat privately. <keyword id="418593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="good-leaders">Good leaders</keyword> talk about their team and their team’s contributions. And if they feel really good about themselves, they do it at home or with a close friend but not publicly. 
 
5. Give the hard message It’s easy to give somebody a raise or a good review, but not everyone does an outstanding job all the time. You’ve got to tell them the right way even if its harsh, and then you’ve got to move on.

I thought I'd test it out by having ChatGPT write a short intro for this newsletter. Stay up-to-date with the top 10 tech stories of the day, handpicked for you. Today is Thursday, March 30th, 2023." Not bad! It's clear the technology is progressing rapidly. But as ChatGPT and other generative AI tools get more and more impressive, it's also highlighting how big the ramifications can be. Tech leaders are urging caution on AI

NEW DELHI: In what might mark nervousness in <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> ranks over the <keyword id="56" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Party">party</keyword>’s poll prospects, shipping minister GK Vasan on Tuesday ruled himself out of the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> contest. 
 Vasan’s declaration comes in the wake of reports that I&amp;B minister <keyword id="119952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Manish-Tewari">Manish Tewari</keyword> does not want to take the field in Punjab though sources said his reluctance stems from personal reasons. Tewari’s name has not figured among sitting Punjab MPs declared in the first list of 194 candidates on Saturday, triggering speculation whether he will be the Congress candidate from his constituency of Ludhiana. 
 It was suggested that Tewari was keen on a shift to Chandigarh, but former <keyword id="18658" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Railway-Minister">railway minister</keyword> <keyword id="145307" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pawan-Bansal">Pawan Bansal</keyword> remains in the running for the seat despite the controversy surrounding an alleged case of bribery for a high-level railway appointment. 
 
 The scene in Ludhiana has become complicated with the entry of prominent activist HS Phoolka on an <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> ticket and the threat of SAD-BJP throwing a lot of resources into the challenge. 
 
The reluctance on the part of key Congress leaders to face the battle reinforces the impression that 2014 is a tough test for the ruling camp facing serious anti-incumbency. Opinion polls too are pointing to a sharply dipping graph. 
 Vasan is a known Congress face from <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> — son of the late stalwart GK Moopanar — but his chickening out is seen in conjunction with the party’s failure to attract any allies like DMK in the elections. Congress is staring down the barrel without the support of either of the Dravidian parties as also no truck with minor caste outfits like DMDK that inhabit the Tamil political space. 
 
On his part, Vasan cited his responsibilities as a campaigner to justify his decision to opt out of fighting elections. “I am one of the main campaigners who wants to ensure the victory of Congress candidates by touring all 39 seats in the state,” he said. 
 The claim apart, Congress is reeling under poor PR after important desertions in states. <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="leader">Leader</keyword> of opposition in Odisha assembly <keyword id="117981" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bhupinder-Singh">Bhupinder Singh</keyword> joined principal rival <keyword id="127045" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Biju-Janata-Dal">Biju Janata Dal</keyword> as did <keyword id="2115867" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bhagirath-Prasad">Bhagirath Prasad</keyword> who joined BJP after he was announced the candidate from Bhind seat in Madhya Pradesh. 
 
The sensational defections are undercutting the Congress attempt to project the 2014 elections as normal in the wake of an entrenched perception that the party is facing an uphill task after successive wins in 2004 and 2009.

Whenever a leader is being described, adjectives like visionary, strategic, decisive, courageous, accountable, influential, inspiring, passionate are often used. But, after Sundar Pichai got the top job at Google, the word “nice” got added in the corporate dictionary and it became the coolest quality to look for in the new CEO. 
 
Even in the case of Dr. APJ Kalam, whose demise was mourned by one and all across the powerful and the powerless, his popularity and effectiveness was owing to the fact that he made people feel loved, cared and capable to make things happen and improve their lives. The “nice” man was mourned and people are still cherishing the memories of him, whose tenderness and nice ways impacted us Indians. 
 
I, for once feel that the most undervalued and understated trait in a successful leader is to be “nice”. 
 
With the new breed of CEOs, starting with Jeff Immelt to some of the recent appointments of Satya Nadela and Sundar Pichai, the corporate world is finally coming around and recognizing the core value we were taught in our moral science class and our middle class homes. 
 
People must believe in both the message and the messenger and for that they need to be able to relate and imagine themselves in the leader. 
 
Here are a few tenets of ‘niceness’ that we have identified in a leader. This is also what we validated in our Top Companies for Leaders and Best Employers research studies. 
 
1. It is important to be “self-aware”. It is a clear perception of your personality, strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation and emotions. Self-awareness helps you understand people and appreciate their strengths and value that they bring. 
 
2. Resilience is another critical ability in these VUCA times. Leaders with high resilience encourage their team during crisis, providing decisive direction when times are difficult and most importantly don’t reprimand failure. Resilient leaders are level-headed, build strong relationships and celebrate small successes. 
 
3. Firms that achieve both top quartile engagement levels and better business results than their peers, find that they have something in common. It’s the prevalence of a certain kind of leader, this individual we call an Engaging Leader. They are not the mettle-testing sorts, but are caring and attentive mentors. They believe that leadership is a contact sport and are thoughtful about human relations. 
 
Did you ever wonder what leadership is required at the battle field, when you have to motivate people to be proud to lay their lives? Few armies make it sound simple, by having their officers lead from the front. When you are ready to take the bullet before it hits your men, it is not difficult to have people follow you. We need to reward and promote a set of common behaviors; proactively own solutions where others cannot or do not own, energize others, keeping people focused on purpose and vision with contagious positivity and lastly, connect and stabilize groups by listening, staying calm, and unifying people. The recent news on nice guys being appreciated, respected and growing globally is helping us all change in our minds the adage that ‘Nice guys finish last’.

You are a ‘nice’ leader if you follow these tenets

Success is not something that can be accomplished overnight. It takes a lot of hard work, time and sheer dedication. 
 
Every successful leader, entrepreneur or idealist has had their own unique journey as they strove for what they believed in and proved to society that anyone can break free from the chains they think are holding them back. 
 
Although each of them had different a different path, their destination was the same: success. 
 
There are many factors which tie these successful individuals together, one of them being how they grew and matured along the journey. Steve Siebold, author of “How Rich People Think,” interviewed more than a thousand millionaires over three decades to learn what led them to their success and wealth. 
 
The answer was quite simple: Steve learned that it did not matter where they were born, or even to whom — what really made these millionaires stand out was their mentality, the drive to reach their goals while letting nothing hold them back. This mindset led these individuals to wealth. 
 
Here are seven sentences you’ll never hear a successful person say because they contradict that unstoppable attitude. 
 
1. “I hate my job” 
One highly-admired quality in successful people is that they are never too opinionated about their job or workplace, irrespective of what they might be doing at any point in life. Even if they are in a situation which is uncomfortable or are surrounded with negative energy, they always avoid statements like the above. These negative elements do nothing but slow you down in your journey to achieve success. Instead of insulting a person, the job or the company, they seek to resolve issue with proper facts, tactics and complete neutrality. 
 
2. “That’s not fair” 
Did your rival receive an award, appraisal, or recognition and you got nothing, while you’re twice as dedicated and productive? A mistake successful people never make is ranting and raving about the injustices of life. Unfairness is something you have to get used to. Success is not gifted to you — you have to work to earn it, and in the midst of doing that you need to show you deserve it. 
 
Instead of whining and complaining, the secret of being able to move on is to be proactive about such issues and not reactive. Causing a scene will only affect you negatively. If you think you were much more deserving, prove it by making a strong case and presenting it. 
 
3. “That’s not how it’s done here” 
Innovation is a key characteristic of successful people, whichever fields they might be in. You have to learn to embrace new things and not be afraid of doing away with conventions. Nobody ever achieved anything great without trying something new. 
 
Take Steve Jobs for instance: Mr. Jobs was very passionate about innovation and such passion led to amazing creations like the iPhone and the iPad, devices that changed the world. Jobs once said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” 
 
Darlene Price, president of Well Said, Inc., shared some advice with Business Insider about keeping an open mind and innovating at work. “Even if you disagree with someone’s idea, say instead, ‘Wow, that’s an interesting idea. How would that work?'” Price said. “Or, ‘That’s a different approach. Let’s discuss the pros and cons.'” Don’t be obstinate and afraid to try new things — that’s not the way success is achieved! 
 
4. “That’s not my job” 
There is one big rule which successful individuals follow: If you are truly successful, you will help others succeed as well. An example of this can be taken from Mr. Warren Buffett, who said, “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” 
 
Becoming a team player is what helps you get closer to success, and if you are not a team player success will never come to you. You might be rich, you might be successful, but the hard work and dedication of your employees and members of your business or organization are the real reason behind your success and your reputation. 
 
5. “That’s impossible” 
Successful people know that boundaries and limits are only creations of the mind, and we ourselves give birth to such restrictions. Such statements needlessly hold you back from achieving greatness. Achievers do not complain about barriers or hurdles; instead they find a way around obstacles and use their creativity to challenge them. 
 
Negative words like “can’t,” “won’t,” and “impossible” are never heard from the mouths of successful individuals. They know complaining will not help them, but actually doing something about the issue at hand will. 
 
6. “I could have” 
Regret is the worst feeling an individual can face, to keep revisiting times when they “could have” done something, the situation was out of hand or else they “would have,” now realizing that they “should have.” Successful individuals do not give themselves the opportunity to regret. This is due to two reasons: either they take the opportunity, no matter the odds, and turn the tables around; or they move on and find another opportunity that awaits. Regret is never going to serve anyone. 
 
7. “I have no choice” 
There are always options and opportunities at hand, and successful people know how to create their own way to these opportunities. Price pointed out, “To say we have no choice in the matter implies that we perceive ourselves as a victim, that we are less powerful than our environment.”

After all, most of us strive to be more engaging and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/easy-ways-to-become-more-charismatic-2015-3">charismatic</a> in our daily lives.But in the workplace, there's reason to believe that being boring has its advantages. In a recent <a href="https://hbr.org/2015/09/the-best-managers-are-boring-managers">article</a> for The Harvard Business Review, Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Ph.D., a professor of business psychology, writes that managers who are perceived as predictable and reliable tend to be the most effective. Chamorro-Premuzic says the term psychologists use is "emotional maturity," which means being emotionally stable, agreeable, and conscientious. He cites a <a href="http://workforceuniverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Judge_2002.pdf">study</a> led by Timothy A. Judge, Ph.D., which found that effective leaders tend to be extroverted (sociable) and conscientious (hardworking).That personality type, Chamorro-Premuzic says, is the exact opposite of the legendary figures we typically associate with successful leadership, such as Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos. Those individuals tend to be more volatile and self-centered, and few managers could get away with behaving the same way.In a Fast Company <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3048541/hit-the-ground-running/the-upside-of-being-boring">article</a>, Chamorro-Premuzic elaborates on the potential upsides of being a boring manager. "Popular writing on leadership emphasizes the role of charisma, yet charisma is just a politically correct term for narcissism, and its benefits are almost always short-lived, and benefit the individual rather than the organization," he writes. "[T]he best managers in the world tend to be stable rather than excitable, consistent rather than erratic, as well as polite and considerate," he adds.Chamorro-Premuzic goes on to say that the term "boring" is actually a stand-in for "emotionally intelligent," which is a key trait in today's workplace. Someone who is emotionally intelligent never loses his or her temper and maintains a consistently calm demeanor. "If your manager is all over the place, you're never going to know what you can do, and you're going to experience it as very restrictive." Keeping these ideas in mind can help companies spot managerial potential in their employees.
