<ul><li><strong>With economic actvities resuming gradually across the country, the power consumption data may come as a breather for stocks in the power sector. </strong></li><li><strong>The power consumption in July  2020 was just 2.6% short of the demand exactly a year earlier.</strong></li><li><strong>Check out the latest news and updates on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Business Insider</a>.</strong></li></ul>The slump in power consumption has narrowed to just 2.64% in July at 113.48 billion units (BU) indicating spurt in economic activity and raised hopes that it would touch normal level this month. Power consumption in July last year was at 116.48 BU, as per power ministry data. <br /><br />The latest data of the power ministry shows that power consumption has improved after government started giving relaxations for economic activities and onset of summer. "The slump in power consumption has narrowed down considerably to 2.6 per cent. It is expected to be at normal level (what it was last year in same month) during August. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">A computer generated image of the proposed data centre in Ireland.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple is facing further delays on a proposed €850 million data centre in Ireland after appellants called on a local planning body to hold an oral hearing around environmental and power consumption issues.</p><p>Apple <a href="http://connachttribune.ie/apple-plants-seeds-massive-galway-data-centre-048/" target="_blank">filed a planning application for the data centre last April</a> and was hoping to start building the facility on a 500-acre site before the end of last year.</p><p>The Cupertino-headquartered company wants to use the data centre to store European user data and to help power online services including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps, and Siri for customers across Europe.</p><p>Most people in the area want the data centre to be built, local sources have told Business Insider. </p><p>But the application for the data centre in Derrydonnell Forest, situated near a small town called Athenry, in County Galway, is currently being held up by An Bord Pleanála - an independent planning group that decides on appeals from planning decisions made by local authorities in Ireland.</p><p>An Bord Pleanála was initially due to pass a decision on the data centre on February 3, but that date was pushed back to May 23. An Bord Pleanála said it pushed the decision date back because it had not received all the information it needed from Apple.</p><p>That date is now likely to be further extended, according to two An Bord Pleanála employees that we spoke to over the phone on Friday.</p><p>Nicola Meehan, an executive officer at An Bord Pleanála, told Business Insider that two appellants have requested an oral hearing, which has been approved by An Bord Pleanála. Meehan added that a date is yet to be set for the hearing.</p><p>These oral hearings aren't unusual for major infrastructure projects in Ireland but Apple will need to satisfy a panel of planners at the hearing if it is to get the green light on the data centre.</p><p>Another An Bord Pleanála employee that we spoke to over the phone said the "files are still with the inspector" and there's "likely to be a new revised date" for the decision.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple Maps/Skitch/Sam Shead</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The two parties that requested the hearing are an individual, Pat Larkin, and David Hughes Architects. They paid €50 when making their request for the oral hearing on top of the €220 they paid when they filed their initial appeal with An Bord Pleanála.</p><p>According to documents available through Galway County Council's website, Larkin has a number of concerns over the proposed data centre. Among them, he is worried that the data centre will have a negative impact on the environment and that the data centre is being built on a site that hasn't been designated for industrial use.</p><p>Larkin and a number of other parties have highlighted that Apple wants to build the data centre on "unzoned lands." However, Galway County planning guidelines are understood to allow for a "specialist enterprise development that is large scale or high value" and a development that facilities opportunities for "science and technology based employment."</p><p>Business Insider has contacted Apple and is awaiting a response.</p><p>A spokesman for Apple <a href="http://www.independent.ie/business/technology/apples-850m-data-centre-in-galway-faces-new-bord-pleanala-hearing-34657888.html" target="_blank">told The Irish Independent</a>: "We welcome the opportunity to address any additional questions An Bord Pleanála may have. The planning process is an important way for everyone to have their say and we've made every effort to incorporate the feedback we've received. Our plans are for our greenest data centre yet which is designed to be sympathetic to its surroundings and, like all our data centres, run on 100% renewable energy from day one."</p><p>Other parties that have come out against certain aspects of the data centre development <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/athenry-golf-club-appeals-apple-data-centre-2016-4" target="_blank">include Athenry Golf Club</a>, which is concerned about flooding, and Ireland's Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, which is concerned about the impact wildlife, including bats and badgers.</p><p>An engineer named Allan Daly has <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-data-centre-could-increase-irelands-electricity-consumption-by-82-2016-4" target="_blank">concerns about the data centre's electricity consumption</a>, notably that it could increase Ireland's overall electricity consumption by 8.2% by the time it is fully built out. Apple claims in its Revised "<a href="http://gccapps.galwaycoco.ie/viewexternaldocuments/ViewPDF?ref=2035216" target="_blank">Environmental Impact Statement</a>" that the data centre won't use this much energy.</p><p>Daly told Business Insider by email: "In my opinion, the proposal is a serious breach of established planning policy that contravenes the principles of sustainable and sequential development in East Co. Galway. Most data centre proponents tend to overlook the planning issues with the belief that the economic benefits to the area - in the form of jobs gains and supporting and/or "magnet" enterprise - override all other considerations."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Russell Cheyne</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Frank Greene, president of Galway's Chamber of Commerce, <a href="http://www.independent.ie/business/technology/apples-850m-data-centre-in-galway-faces-new-bord-pleanala-hearing-34657888.html" target="_blank">told the Irish Independent</a> that the data centre could act as a catalyst to bring additional investment to the region. "The wider significance of having Apple as part of the DNA of the Galway region is huge," he said. "It's also going to have a big multiplier effect on indirect jobs here."</p><p>Daly said he believes the Irish planning system can be extremely subjective and discretionary. "This makes planning decisions vulnerable to political influence by other government agencies (such as IDA Ireland, the agency responsible for the attraction and development of Foreign Direct Investment in Ireland), as well as individual politicians. There is no doubt that significant pressure has been applied to An Bord Pleanála to approve the development applications associated with Apple's data centre."</p><p>The oral hearing will take place at an undecided venue in Galway, which Apple will be invited to attend.</p><p>Apple was initially hoping the data centre would begin operations at some point in 2017 but the setbacks suggest a later start date may be on the cards.</p><p>Some 5,500 of Apple's 18,300 European staff are based in Ireland, which is also home to its European headquarters. The company plans to hire an additional 1,000 staff in Ireland before 2017.</p><p>Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have also built data centres in Ireland, and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/facebook-submits-planning-permission-200-million-euro-data-centre-clonee-ireland-meath-2015-6" target="_blank">Facebook also has one planned</a>. Many of them have based their European headquarters in the country, which offers a lower corporation tax rate than other European nations.</p><p>Elsewhere in Europe, Apple is planning to build a data centre in Denmark on the same scale as the one in Ireland. Apple's Irish data centre is facing further delays amid environmental and power consumption concerns

GDP <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-q4-2012-gdp-2013-1">rose 7.9 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter,</a> slightly ahead of economists' estimates of 7.8 percent expansion.</p>
<p>Growth was up from 7.4 percent in Q3.</p>
<p>However, China's official statistics often spark skepticism among analysts and investors who question the veracity of the data, which is why those observers turn to <keyword id="44578" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electricity">electricity</keyword> data to see what's really going on inside the Chinese economy.</p>
<p>BofA Merrill Lynch economist Ting Lu suggests <span>there is little reason for </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-china-economist-dismisses-ny-times-report-about-chinese-data-2012-6">electricity consumption to be manipulated</a>, writing,<span> "China's local officials might be incentivized to over-report some macro indicators such as GDP and FAI, but they have little incentive to over-report use of energy including electricity as Beijing imposes increasingly restrictive regulations on energy use per unit of GDP on local governments."</span></p>
<p><span></span>The latest data out this evening reveal that China's power consumption declined in 2012, but crucially, it turned around in the fourth quarter, confirming the indication of a recovery from the official statistics.</p>
<p>Deutsche Bank analysts Michael Tong, Eric Cheng, and Kai-Ting Wong offered a detailed breakdown of the data in a note to clients following the release:</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><strong>2012 national power consumption growth rate declined, while 4Q12 recovered:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">China’s 2012 power consumption increased by 5.5% yoy to 4,960bn kWh, with growth rate decreased by 6.5ppt yoy. National monthly growth rate had declined since March 2012. However, thanks to China’s macro control and low basement of last year’s number, the consumption volume recovered since October. The national power consumption in 1Q12, 2Q12, 3Q12 increased by 6.8% yoy, 4.3% yoy, 3.9% yoy to 1,166bn kWh, 1,210bn kWh and 1,310bn kWh, respectively, with growth rate declining qoq, while that in 4Q12 increased by 7.5% yoy, representing apparent recovery.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Power consumption for tertiary industry and residential users enjoyed fast growth: </strong><span>China’s 2012 power consumption for primary industry kept flat yoy to 101bn kWh, that for secondary industry increased by 3.9% yoy to 3,667bn kWh (with growth rate down by 8.3ppt yoy). That for tertiary industry and residential users increased by 11.5% yoy and 10.7% yoy to 569bn kWh, 622bn kWh, respectively, keeping at a fast growth. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Power consumption growth of heavy industry appeared a slow trend: </strong><span>China’s 2012 industrial power consumption increased by 3.9% yoy to 3,606bn kWh, of which light and heavy industry accounting for 608bn kWh and 2,998bn kWh, up 4.3% and 3.8% yoy, with growth rate down 5ppt and 9ppt yoy, respectively. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Power consumption growth in West China higher than Central and East China: </strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In 2012, power consumption growth in East, Central and West China were </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">4.4%, 4.9% and 8.3%, of which growth rate in West China 3.9ppt and 3.4ppt higher than that in East and Central China.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Clean Energy power output soaring: </strong><span>In 2012, coal-fired power output increased </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">by 0.3% yoy to 3,911bn kWh. China had digested 1,066bn kWh of clean </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">energy power, up 28.5% yoy, of which hydro power up by 29.3% yoy to 864bn </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">kWh, nuclear power up by 12.6% yoy to 98bn kWh, wind power up by 35.5% yoy to 100bn kWh and solar power up by 414% yoy to 3.5bn kWh.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">After 5.5 percent electricity consumption growth in 2012, China's State Electricity Regulatory Commission expects to see 9 percent growth in 2013.</span></p>

China's Latest Electricity Usage Data Confirm The Country's Return To Growth

When the average consumer shops for a GPU, they are primarily looking at performance versus price, trying to find the best bang for their buck.</p><p>That same measure doesn't work as well when you scale that comparison up to giant data centers. Performance and price are important, but hundreds or thousands of GPUs also draw hundreds or thousands of times the amount of power a consumer computer might. Power consumption becomes much more important at larger scales.</p><p>It's hard to determine how a collection of GPUs might draw power when you only have a couple of them lying around, but RBC analysts did their best, and that is where bitcoin comes in. </p><p>The whole <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/btc-usd">bitcoin</a> ecosystem relies on individual computers banding together to solve complex math problems. Anyone can use their computer to help solve these problems, a process known as mining. Mining tends to work faster when running on powerful GPUs.</p><p>RBC took this theory, strung together several GPUs, and tasked them with helping solve bitcoin's fancy math problems. It did this for NVIDIA and several competitors.</p><p>The idea is that the GPU-intensive process of mining bitcoin would force the GPUs into overtime and make them draw more power. It's as close of an approximation to a full-scale data center as RBC could put together. The firm called it a "thought experiment."</p><p>The result of the experiment favored NVIDIA processors over competitors like AMD, when comparing power consumption during bitcoin mining.</p><p>Companies building huge data centers are probably conducting their own research that more closely resembles what they would see at scale, but the RBC experiment serves to illustrate another reason NVIDIA holds the top spot for GPU makers.</p><p>As technology like machine learning, augmented reality and virtual reality pick up momentum, demand for GPUs will increase in order to run the graphics intensive technologies. New Delhi, Jun 23 () Coal India's fuel allocation under the exclusive e-auction scheme for non-power consumers like steel and cement jumped five-fold to 6.10 million tonnes (MT) in the last two months. <p>The state-owned company had allocated 1.20 MT of coal to non-power consumers under the scheme in April-May 2019, as per latest government data. </p><p>This growth comes amid Coal India Ltd (CIL) looking to tap the non-power sector for consumption of its coal in the wake of a slump in demand for the dry fuel. </p><p>Under the scheme, CIL allocated 2.19 MT of coal last month, against no fuel allocated by the PSU in May 2019, the data said. </p><p>For the entire fiscal 2019-20, the PSU's coal allocation under the scheme dropped to 8.03 MT from 11.36 MT in the previous year. </p><p>The scheme was launched in 2015-16 to make coal available to non-power consumers, including captive power plants. </p><p>CIL had earlier said it continues to face tepid demand for coal, with most of its customers, like the power sector, shying away from lifting adequate quantities. </p><p>The power sector, which accounts for close to 80 per cent of CIL's total supplies, is brimming over with nearly 50 MT of coal stock, sufficient for 29 days of consumption, as at May-end, the PSU had said. </p><p>Many plants have started restricting supplies from CIL further, shrinking coal despatches, it had said. </p><p>During May, the power sector lifted 30.15 MT of coal from CIL sources, down 25 per cent from 40.38 MT in the same month last year. </p>To find avenues for expanding its supplies, CIL is focusing on non-power sector consumers like sponge iron, cement, fertilisers and steel companies, persuading them to replace their imported coal with domestic supply. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The Department of Commerce will release the US trade balance for August at 8:30 a.m. ET.</p><p>Economists estimate that the trade deficit, or the excess of imports over exports, swelled to $48 billion from $41.86 in the prior month, according to Bloomberg. </p><p>Pantheon Macroeconomics' Ian Shepherdson wrote in a note to clients that the trade numbers will be "startingly terrible", given low oil prices and soaring consumption.</p><p>The data will also include the advance trade report for a third time. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Apple is planning to launch an updated version of the MacBook Pro later this year, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-02-01/apple-developing-new-mac-chip-in-test-of-intel-independence">a new report from Bloomberg ace Mark Gurman</a>.</p><p>This updated MacBook Pro could feature a new Apple-designed chip designed for low-power consumption. </p><p>Apple designs the primary application processor chip inside of its iPhones, a major competitive advantage that allows Apple's phones and tablets to boast better performance than Android devices. </p><p>Using that expertise from the iPhone, Apple is planning to add more Apple-designed silicon to the Mac, according to the Bloomberg report. The report notes Apple is not planning to dump Intel, which makes the processors for Macs, anytime in the near future, but that a new Apple-made chip might show up in the new version of the MacBook Pro that may release later this year, according to the report.</p><p>Instead, the new Apple chip, codenamed T310, will be based on the embedded processor currently used in the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, which is used for the computer's eponymous Touch Bar technology as well as Touch ID. In the new MacBook Pro coming later this year, the new Apple chip could run the laptop's low-power mode to fetch emails and other data while the computer is asleep, leading to lower power consumption and better battery life. </p><p>Apple leadership has implied some of the reason <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/21/phil-schiller-32gb-ram-mbp-logic-board/">for complaints about Apple's latest laptops </a>have been related to Intel chip limitations. Apple is also suing its primary mobile silicon partner, Qualcomm, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-sues-qualcomm-2017-1">for $1 billion</a>.</p>

<p>As <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/can-ai-be-a-solution-to-the-climate-crisis-2023-5">Luccioni</a> shows me a digital map that tabulates real-time data on electricity consumption and carbon intensity, she explains it's her "favorite website."</p><p>Her enthusiasm carries over into her role as AI &amp; Climate Lead at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hugging-face-open-source-ai-approach-2023-12">Hugging Face</a>, where Luccioni collects actionable data on AI's environmental impact.</p><p>She has her work cut out for her, especially as companies like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jensen-huang-nvidia-robots-huamanoid-self-driving-cars-2024-9">Nvidia</a> and Google, which design AI chips, become more secretive about their proprietary offerings.</p><p>"The difficulty is that there's this race to secrecy," Luccioni said. "Since ChatGPT came on in November 2022, companies have really cracked down on how much information they share about their models."</p><p>Luccioni codeveloped and regularly contributes to <a target="_blank" href="https://codecarbon.io/">CodeCarbon</a>, a program that helps developers estimate emissions and energy use from running AI models. Luccioni says tens of thousands of people have cited the program. She's most proud of how it allows technologists to act on their concern for the environment and benchmark against actual data.</p><p>Meta recently used the tool to estimate emissions from running one of its <a target="_blank" href="https://huggingface.co/meta-llama/Meta-Llama-3-8B">latest Llama models</a>.</p><p>"Where the energy is coming from is really the biggest impact on emissions," Luccioni said. "The issue is that most supercomputers, be it Google Cloud, Azure, or AWS, are located in places that are not powered by renewable energy, mostly natural gas and coal, and that makes a huge difference."</p><p>One of her latest projects should make it less opaque to understand how much energy and computing power popular AI models and tools use. This work, done with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, is expected to eventually help establish an energy-efficiency rating standard for AI models. She likens it to an<a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=4eff6049c33f6535f47c8f7e8ac1b3b733fd4f8c291fd482d249faf13be5d56f&amp;postID=66faf5cee5b54083003ce06c&amp;postSlug=sasha-luccioni-hugging-face-ai-power-list-2024&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fd41586-024-02680-3"> Energy Star rating</a>.</p><p>"The EPA adopted this trust-based approach, but in the case of AI it would be a bit harder to adopt that approach because there are so many variables," she said. "You have to define specific data sets and specific hardware to compare these models."</p><p>As <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-value-estimate-20-trillion-tech-wave">AI's value soars, possibly into the trillions,</a> Luccioni's work will help document the tech's toll on electric grids and, ultimately, the environment.</p><p>"You train a model once, but you deploy for a while. Even quantifying the amount of energy per query or per day is really powerful," Luccioni said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A rare bee species reportedly threw a wrench in Meta's plans for an AI data center.</li><li>Meta planned to build a facility to run on nuclear power, but the bees complicated matters, FT said.</li></ul><p>In <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-happy-spending-big-ai-2024-10">the race to build out AI infrastructure</a>, Meta met an unlikely roadblock in one case: bees.</p><p>A rare species of the insect threw a wrench in the company's plans for an AI data center, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ft.com/content/ed602e09-6c40-4979-aff9-7453ee28406a">the Financial Times</a> reported Monday.</p><p>Meta had been in talks with a nuclear power plant operator for a US data center to support <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-nvidia-h100-chip-cluster-llama-4-2024-10">the company's AI work</a>, per the FT. However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an all-hands gathering that the discovery of the bee species at a location next to the planned plant was partly responsible for upending the plans, the FT reported, citing two people familiar with the meeting.</p><p>Regulatory challenges were also a factor, according to the FT. The newspaper didn't name the power plant operator or say where the site was set to be. </p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-stock-earnings-report-call-live-updates-2024-10">Meta said in its latest earnings report</a> that it expects "a significant acceleration in infrastructure expense growth next year" and "significant capital expenditures growth in 2025," owing in no small part to its work on AI.</p><p>Meta isn't the only tech giant spending big on infrastructure for its AI ambitions. Rivals, including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, also invest billions in data centers to power their AI. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-nuclear-power-ai-data-centers-2024-10">Last</a><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-nuclear-power-ai-data-centers-2024-10"> month, Google announced a partnership to buy nuclear energy</a> from small modular reactors to be built by Kairos Power, making it the first tech giant to broker a deal for new nuclear power plants.</p><p>Amazon plans to spend about $150 billion on data centers by 2040, Bloomberg <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-28/amazon-bets-150-billion-on-data-centers-required-for-ai-boom?embedded-checkout=true">reported</a> in March. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-data-centers-delays-costs-power-labor-shortages-aws-ai-2024-10">The company could roll out as many as 240 new data centers by 2040</a>, Marc Wulfraat, the president of the consulting firm MWPVL, previously told BI, citing the massive square footage at the company's disposal by way of its leasing space in buildings shared with other firms.</p><p>In September, Microsoft signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with energy company Constellation in a deal that would <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/three-mile-island-nuclear-plant-reopens-power-microsoft-ai-push-2024-9">bring back online part of Three Mile Island</a>, the site of the US's worst nuclear energy accident.</p><p>The boom in data centers to power AI also comes with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-generative-ai-environment-climate-change-global-emissions-2023-9">high costs environmentally</a>, not just financially. In the US, data centers are expected to reach 35 gigawatts of power consumption annually by 2040, up from 17 gigawatts in 2022, according to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/technology-media-and-telecommunications/our-insights/investing-in-the-rising-data-center-economy"><u>McKinsey analysis</u></a>.</p><p>Meta did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</p>

The deflator is a measure of <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword>. The data essentially reflects how much of the clocked growth is due to rise in prices. <br /><br />The estimate from India's chief statistician has pegged agricultural <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> growth at a measly 3.8% for 2018-19 compared to 4.5% a year earlier. However, there is a troubling detail: "We believe that the estimate is primarily due to growth in allied activities (livestock, forestry and fishing)," Ghosh's report warned.<br /><br />In effect, Indian farmers are looking at a second straight year of below-par performance.  will further stoke the discontent among rural voters, much to the worry of the Modi government.<br /><br /><strong>Cost of the crisis<br /></strong><br />The concern for the Indian government is both economic and political. <br /><br />Farmers in financial distress will consume even less and that will further squeeze overall economic growth, which, at this point, is heavily dependent on services and consumption. <br /><br /> Both manufacturing and fresh investments have been uninspiring so far. New projects fell to an appalling <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/djaa4hxQTklGR3lOws8hzJ/New-investments-in-India-plunge-to-14yearlow.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">14-year low</a> in December 2018. Capital investments have remained the  government's prerogative as private investors shied away from betting big bucks.<br /><br />The slowing rural consumption has been visible in the recent slowdown in <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/markets/december-auto-sales-live-maruti-suzuki-declines-the-most-in-four-months" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">two-wheeler sales and budget cars</a>, which derive traction mainly from the affordability for Indians in smaller cities and villages.<br /><br /> High interest rates and soaring fuel prices in the recent past have also dented people's purchasing power while their ability to afford increase prices has been limited, as reflected by the latest estimates.<br /><br />Additionally, Indian government's attempts to fix the narrative with recent hikes in

India's rural distress just went from bad to worse

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Apple</span></p><p class="caption">What Apple's data centre could look like.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Apple's <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-invests-500-million-on-data-centre-in-ireland-2015-2" target="_blank">new Irish data centre</a> could increase electricity consumption in Ireland by 8.2%, according to a document that can be accessed through Galway County Council's website.</p><p>Galway County Council received a detailed letter from a man named Allan Daly last May expressing a number of concerns he has over an €850 million (£599 million) data centre that Apple wants to build in a forest near Athenry, on the west coast of Ireland. Electricity consumption and energy sources are among Daly's top concerns.</p><p>Apple wants to use the data centre to store European user data and to help power online services including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps, and Siri for customers across Europe, <a href="https://www.apple.com/uk/pr/library/2015/02/23Apple-to-Invest-1-7-Billion-in-New-European-Data-Centres.html" target="_blank">according to a press release</a> announcing the development in February 2015. In the same release, Apple said the data centre will <a href="https://www.apple.com/uk/pr/library/2015/02/23Apple-to-Invest-1-7-Billion-in-New-European-Data-Centres.html" target="_blank">run on 100% renewable energy</a>.</p><p>Daly, who does not provide his occupation, starts his letter by saying that the electrical power demand for Apple's data centre is "enormous," before going on to calculate how much electricity the data centre will consume by the time all eight data halls have been built (expected to take 15 years).</p><p>"It is safe to say that Apple's data centre will be the largest single user of electricity within the Republic of Ireland - by far" writes Daly.</p><p>The "Environmental Impact Statement" that Apple produced before submitting its planning application to Galway County Council gives an indication as to how much electricity the data centre will use. It states:</p><p>In his letter, Daly goes on to calculate what he believes to be the annual electricity consumption of the data centre.</p><p>"Because data centres must operate continuously (8,760 hours per year), Apple's annual electrical energy usage is estimated to be 262.8 gigawatt hours (GWh)2 for the proposed development of one data hall, and 2,102 GWh for the full build out of eight data halls. In comparison, the entire Republic of Ireland consumed 25, 780 GWh in 2014."</p><p>Daly includes a number of footnotes in his letter to show where his figures have been sourced. He goes on to highlight how one data hall will increase electrical energy usage across the Republic of Ireland by 1%, while eight data halls will increase it by 8%."</p><p>Professor Ian Bitterlin, a consulting engineer at Critical Facilities Consulting and a visiting lecturer at Leeds University, told Business Insider that the 8.2% increase in Ireland's total electricity consumption sounds plausible.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Galway County Council</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Daly continues: "Due to the monumental power demands of the proposed development, this impact must be evaluated." He adds "it is an issue of national importance."</p><p>Apple <a href="http://connachttribune.ie/apple-plants-seeds-massive-galway-data-centre-048/" target="_blank">filed a planning application</a> to build a 263,000 square foot data centre hall in the middle of Derrydonnell Forest next to the golf course last April. Apple only sought planning permission for one data centre hall but it envisions building up to eight in a phased approach taking at least 15 years to complete. Apple's data centre in Ireland could increase the country's electricity consumption by 8.2%

By K K Shankar <p>New Delhi, May 4 () Power consumption in April dipped 22.75 per cent to 85.05 billion units (BU) compared to 110.11 BU in the same month a year ago, mainly due to low demand amid the lockdown to combat COVID-19.</p><p>The government had imposed lockdown from April 25 to fight the deadly coronavirus in the country. This resulted in lower commercial and industrial demand in April.</p><p>According to power ministry data, the total electricity consumption was 85.05 billion units in April this year.</p><p>The data showed that India's power consumption was 110.11 BU in the corresponding month last year.</p><p>The peak power demand met in April stood at 132.77 GW, almost one-fourth less than 176.81 GW in the same month a year earlier.</p><p>The peak power demand met is the highest energy supply during the day across the country.</p><p>Besides, lower commercial and industrial demand, the relatively cool weather during April this year played spoil sport. The temperature remained below 40 degree celsius even in the second half of the month.</p><p>The cool weather kept the power demand low despite partial easing of the lockdown from April 20. The government had allowed certain economic activities, particularly in rural area and non-containment zones.</p><p>In April, the peak power demand met crossed the 130 GW mark on April 24 (130.02GW), April 29 (131.13GW) and April 30 (132.77GW), the NLDC data showed.</p><p>The power demand during April ranged between 116.89 GW (April 8) to 132.77 GW (April 30).</p><p>An industry expert expressed hope about rise in power demand in coming days, with more relaxations in place from Monday onwards for economic activities across the country and expected rise in temperature in May.</p>However, they are of the view that it would take time to attain power demand levels of last year.
