These chatbots had the faces of celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Mr. Beast, Tom Brady, Snoop Dogg, and more. Strangely, these chatbots used the likenesses of the celebrities, but not their real names. For example, I chatted with "Billie," the character portrayed with an image of Kendall Jenner, whose chat persona was of a helpful sister-like friend.For the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-paying-celebrity-faces-of-ai-chatbots-as-much-as-5-million-2023-10">celebrity-faced AI assistants, Meta reportedly paid as much as $5 million</a> over two years — for six hours of work sitting in a studio. Sure, people didn't seem interested in sticking around talking to fake Tom Brady, but maybe the goal was to get enough people to try using an AI chatbot just one time — and the celebrity gimmick worked for that.Or maybe Meta just has a really strange relationship with the concept of celebrity: It's not a brand like Doritos that uses celebrities in Super Bowl ads or a fashion house where an actress is the face of a perfume. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram">Instagram</a> has been so embedded in the concept of fame and celebrity for the last decade that it's impossible to imagine Meta and famous people existing without each other (whereas I can imagine Doritos getting along just fine).When Meta's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/threads-app">Threads</a> launched in the summer of 2023, a real tension appeared: Big, A-list celebrities — the kind who hadn't used Twitter in years — suddenly flocked to the new platform, bringing big follower counts with them. But most of those celebrities went silent after a day or two, perhaps realizing that a text-based medium wasn't really their jam. A few months later, Meta rolled out a program to give cash bonuses to reality stars in exchange for posting on Threads.When <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-tortured-poets-department-album-reviews-critics-reviews-2024-4">Taylor Swift released her latest album</a>, she did post to Threads, where Mark Zuckerberg enthusiastically posted to welcome her. But after Meta rolled out the welcome mat for the star, she never posted again on Threads.And recently, when Swift made her announcement supporting Kamala Harris, she did it only on Instagram — not even a cross-post to the platform's text-native cousin (for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-kamala-harris-instagram-twitter-elon-musk-2024-9">good reasons, as my colleague Peter Kafka explains</a>).There have been other flops in the celebrity-Meta-ad world. In 2019, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://mashable.com/article/facebook-portal-tv-ad-jennifer-lopez-kim-kardashian-west">Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez</a>, two celebrities whose endorsements usually aren't cheap, starred in three TV spots to promote the Facebook Portal. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/facebook-portal-rip-amazon">Portal was discontinued</a> in late 2022.<h2 id="f684fc34-9ed2-45f0-89eb-636509c56634">How celebrities can help Meta</h2>So, Meta relying on celebrity voices for its AI products feels a little odd to me. Meta's products are usually really good at selling themselves because people love to use them. Celebrities even use them — without getting paid!But reuniting the cast of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-modern-family-tv-ad-us-growth-2024-7">"Modern Family" for a WhatsApp ad</a> suggests Meta might be using celebs to reach normies who might not typically be using AI or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-whatsapp-guide">WhatsApp</a>. And with these latest AI assistant voices, Meta is not going with the hottest Gen Z influencers; it's using Judi Dench, after all.I mean, at least Meta didn't "accidentally" <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-sam-altman-chatgpt-disaster-why-2024-5">hire a soundalike of a well-known celebrity to be the voice for an AI companion</a> like, uh, some other AI competitors. Could be worse!Perhaps it's just that AI is still a little scary and impersonal, and Meta execs think putting a celebrity face — or voice — to it will help make it feel more accessible. Oddly, the ability of AI to impersonate celebrities is one of the things I think many people fear about the technology. But, ah well.My final guess as to Meta's play here is that these decisions come from somewhere deep inside the company, perhaps a decision based on an executive's instinct about what will pop, mixed with some data from the marketing team. I'm sure many meetings were held!I still hold on to my personal pet theory: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ai.meta.com/people/396469589677838/yann-lecun/">Yann LeCun</a> is a frothing fan of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" franchise and demanded the Dame.

Before that, he'd also spent nine months at Cruise — before being laid off.His dual layoffs might have been worse than what many others experienced, but Welfle is hardly alone in getting hit by what appears to be some employers' penchant for regular layoffs, particularly in Silicon Valley.One of the latest examples comes from Meta, which said Wednesday it was rejigging some of its biggest businesses. The changes mean <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-reorganized-major-businesses-eliminated-roles-whatsapp-instagram-reality-labs-2024-10">lost jobs at Instagram</a>, Reality Labs, and WhatsApp.It wasn't clear how many roles were eliminated. In a new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.indeed.com/lead/tapping-into-todays-tech-talent">survey from Indeed</a>, 40% of respondents said they expected to be hit if their company conducted layoffs. Seven in 10 said they would start looking to other employers if their company made layoffs.Indeed surveyed more than 1,100 US tech workers from early to late June.<h2 id="45b631ca-a979-402e-84e9-cacd8e6e300f">A costly decision</h2>Linsey Fagan, senior talent strategy advisor at Indeed, told BI that most of the recurring layoffs are in tech. That's likely because many companies in the industry grew so fast during the pandemic and are still making adjustments.But those recurring cuts don't come without costs, Fagan said."It's definitely not a sustainable strategy," she said.Fagan noted that employee sentiment starts to drop before a layoff as workers suspect cuts are coming. Then, after the layoffs are made, workers' feelings about the company — and a CEO's acumen — take "a long-term dive," she said."When you look at a business trying to come back from that — if they're continuously laying off, it simply can't happen," Fagan said.Even smaller-scale layoffs can make workers jittery, she said. Fagan also noted that the rise of technologies like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-threaten-jobs-of-coders-who-dont-shift-their-focus-2024-9">generative AI</a> and the threat of layoffs are pushing many in tech to want to build their skills.In a departure from the past, tech workers looking for jobs on Indeed are now more likely to apply to staffing firms, which might offer temporary gigs, or to areas like healthcare than to tech firms, she said.Fagan said some tech workers are drawn to the flexibility that contingent or part-time roles can offer. Yet, ultimately, she said, tech is the #1 industry tech workers historically want to work in.However, "they're just not feeling that stability right now," Fagan said.<h2 id="b104b21a-d3c7-4c4c-8f96-abe4129a39ac">Why they do it</h2>Some companies' penchant for undergoing regular nips and tucks could be because Wall Street often celebrates that type of trimming.At Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg was "beautifully rewarded" by the market for making cuts, Dice's Zeile said, noting the rise in the company's stock price.Beyond what investors might cheer, the tech giants are also getting older and no longer in growth mode, when their aim was often to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-new-normal-constant-layoffs-job-cuts-google-amazon-meta-2024-1">snap up workers</a>. Hence, many companies made cuts following the rush of hiring during the pandemic.Since then, some bosses have been looking to trim the size of their organizations and otherwise make improvements. Zuckerberg famously declared that 2023 would be the company's <a target="_blank" href="https://about.fb.com/news/2023/03/mark-zuckerberg-meta-year-of-efficiency/">"year of efficiency</a>." He also said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-firms-laying-off-employees-again-efficiency-amazon-google-2024-1">the directive</a> would become an ongoing feature, not a bug.<h2 id="f4238de0-992d-4404-9264-eec504b4387b">It's not all bad news for tech jobs</h2>Zeile said that investors will eventually look to tech companies to do more than boost profits by trimming costs and want to see a return to growth. He said that's when <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finding-job-awful-right-now-drop-in-openings-tough-search-2024-9">hiring will pick up</a> broadly because companies might have many areas <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-meta-big-tech-companies-rehire-workers-employees-laid-off-2023-9">in need of workers</a>.For now, a company like Meta might be cutting in some areas, but it's growing elsewhere, Zeile said."Meta is actually on a tear right now. They're just no longer hiring VR engineers. They are hiring AI engineers, so they've actually boosted their hiring," he said.Indeed's Fagan said a sign that the tech industry might be closer to stabilizing is that after declining for several years, job postings in areas like software development have remained flat in recent months, though they're still 30% below 2020 levels. Of course, that means there are fewer opportunities for laid-off workers. Still, she said, it's also an indication that companies are being careful not to hire too many people."It's not like they're going out and massively hiring and then doing layoffs," Fagan said.For his part, Welfle, who was laid off from Microsoft, wrote on LinkedIn that he's looking for a content design role — maybe with a smaller company. He also said some of his recent feelings are similar to those he experienced after his prior layoff in December."I'm having a hard time disentangling my sense of value and self-worth from my identity as a corporate worker. Either way, Perry arrived at the VMAs ready to celebrate her career. She swanned around the red carpet, taking selfies with fans and happily chatting with MTV hosts. When she passed through the press area, a female journalist next to me called out, "How does it feel to be the most beautiful woman on the carpet?" Perry immediately shot back in a flirty voice, "You would know!" Everyone erupted in giggles and applause. Perry was in full-on charmer mode. I'll admit I had very low expectations for her Vanguard performance. If you had asked me yesterday about the night's most anticipated entertainers, Perry wouldn't have even made the shortlist. (The answer would've been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sabrina-carpenter-short-n-sweet-album-review-2024-8">Sabrina Carpenter</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chappell-roan-pink-pony-club-song-history-success-2024-9">Chappell Roan</a>, obviously.) But when Perry took the stage — or, rather, hovered above it — and opened with an acrobatic combination of "Dark Horse" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/t5Sd5c4o9UM?si=o79d8LrBCr72V7we">ET</a>," my honest-to-god first thought was, "Damn. She got me." Perry's signature hits still sound as fun, fresh, and freaky as ever. At her creative peak, Perry's lyrics were cheeky, her melodies stickier than anyone's. Even as I'm writing this, the morning after the VMAs, I've repeatedly caught myself humming, "Kiss me, k-k-kiss me." The highlight was easily "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/98WtmW-lfeE?si=CYWecdg0SgVdh0kk">Teenage Dream</a>," the title track from Perry's 2010 album and one of the most perfectly constructed pop songs of all time. After the show ended hours later, I heard a girl say in a hushed, reverent tone, "Being so close to Katy Perry singing 'Teenage Dream' was… surreal." And it was. The sheer power of Perry's early discography on display last night was both her triumph and her downfall. Perry has timeless hits in her catalog. No one can take that away from her. But by mixing them into a medley with singles from "143," Perry's latest work sounds even more hollow and derivative by comparison. Perry's collaboration with Doechii, "I'm His, He's Mine," out tomorrow, had the misfortune of being sandwiched in between "ET" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/F57P9C4SAW4?si=1uUSYKvaJuKkFcsj">California Gurls</a>." There's nothing wrong with the duet per se, but it had the effect of an interlude — a forced hiatus before getting back to the stuff we all know and love. Perry and Doechii carefully executed their intimate, tabloid-baiting choreography, interlacing their legs (<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wap-grammys-cardi-b-complaints-fcc-megan-thee-stallion-2021-4">à la Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion</a>) and putting their faces close enough to kiss, as if they were trying to be shocking to distract from the song itself. Perry capped off the medley with "Lifetimes," a by-the-numbers dance song, which would've been an underwhelming closer even if it hadn't been preceded by the one-two punch of "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/tAp9BKosZXs?si=IXFxFuxwPJqv9AR_">I Kissed a Girl</a>" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/QGJuMBdaqIw?si=OTolE_WooKMpG6JY">Firework</a>." I would never recommend chasing fireworks with a plastic bag drifting through the wind. If Perry wanted to deliver an impressive spectacle and sing her heart out, then she most definitely succeeded. But if she aimed to prove that her new songs could hang with her beloved hits, I regret to report that she failed.
