As PC and laptop makers urge the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirements accompanied by a quota, the industry stakeholders have met <keyword id="296566" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="it-ministry" source="Orion">IT Ministry</keyword> officials to seek solutions on the matter. The meeting discussed proposed changes, like linking the import of IT hardware to the local manufacturing of a company value and its export value of electronic items, according to sources. The meeting on Friday was called to give suggestions on how the proposed import management system should work and get the stakeholders' feedback. Another meeting is likely to happen again next week to continue discussions on the issue. Last month, the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (<keyword id="6816005" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icea" source="Orion">ICEA</keyword>) wrote to the IT Ministry, requesting the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirement accompanied by a quota, which was extended by 3 months until October 31, fearing that this may lead to price rise in consumer electronics products as companies are not yet prepared for manufacturing PCs, laptops and servers domestically at scale. The letter said that an overarching factor that should be taken into consideration in "avoiding supply chain disruption till domestic production ramps up" is that any "reduction in supplies or even an indication will lead to hoarding and market distortion". This, in turn, can push up consumer prices, "which will adversely impact not just key stakeholders such as students, but also those who are the core of growing the digital economy, i.e. start-ups, IT and ITES firms, BPOs". The industry seeks at least nine-month breather after the PLI for IT Hardware was launched. "The government may undertake a re-assessment of the investment pipeline and the supply situation before inviting the industry to discuss whether any further policy intervention is needed at that stage. It may be too early to assess the full implication of the new scheme before then," according to the letter. Where servers are concerned, the ICEA has received inputs that companies in that sector seek a relook at their inclusion in the proposed intervention. The Central government earlier deferred its decision to restrict the import of certain categories of laptops and computers until November 1, allowing companies three-months time to import these devices. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. The PLI 2.0 for IT hardware has garnered applications from 40 companies including global and domestic. The expected incremental production under the scheme is around Rs 3.35 lakh crore. PC manufacturers meet MeitY officials on import curbs, seek solutions

While the import of these devices has not been banned, it can only be done by those holding a valid licence for restricted imports. “Import of Laptops, Tablets, All-in-one Personal Computers, and Ultra small form factor Computers and Servers falling under HSN 8741 shall be 'Restricted' and their import would be allowed against a valid Licence for Restricted Imports,” the government said in a notification. Update: The government has now deferred the import restrictions to November 1, allowing companies ample time to apply for licences and avoid issues. “Keeping in view global supply chain arrangements and long-term commitments of the industry stakeholders, liberal transitional arrangements are notified for these imports till October 31, 2023,” said the government. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What does this mean?" comment="subhead" text="What does this mean?">What does this mean?</cmsannotation> So far, companies were to import pre-built or fully assembled laptops and tablets to the country without any licensing requirements. "The government's move is aimed at promoting domestic production and reducing dependence on imports. The industry comprises around 12 million units, and this restriction may lead to some short-term supply disruptions, especially for brands like Apple, HP, and Lenovo. Moreover, with the festive season approaching, a significant period for sales, the industry may face challenges in meeting demand," said Tarun Pathak, research director, Counterpoint Research. As companies will need some to move manufacturing, there may be some short-term impact on the prices and the availability. Gururaj, managing director, Optiemus Electronics in a statement to Business Insider India. “We currently hold the PLI for IT Hardware and are manufacturing laptops for notable brands. With this move, we expect further expansion of our capacity to manufacture these devices,” he added. "We are confident that valid licences will be provided to trusted industry partners which will enable ease of doing business and unrestricted access to trusted brands for digital consumers," said Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). A parliamentary committee has recommended setting up population-based cancer registries in rural areas to help data-driven and evidence-based policy formulation. It has also suggested raising taxes on tobacco products citing that increasing their market price would make them less affordable. This will result in lower consumption and decrease the risk of tobacco-related diseases, including cancer, the panel said. The <keyword id="46535" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="health-ministry" source="Orion">health ministry</keyword> must pursue with the Department of Revenue to expedite the decision on raising taxes on tobacco products, the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare said in its 147th report. It was presented in <keyword id="48510" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajya-sabha" source="Orion">Rajya Sabha</keyword> on Friday. It said for better policy formulation on cancer treatment and uniform distribution of cancer care, there is an urgent need to have realistic information about the incidence and type of cancers across the country. The committee said that the health ministry should take appropriate steps to persuade state governments to participate in the formulation of the cancer atlas so that the entire Indian population is covered under Population Based Cancer Registries (PBCRs). This will help in data-driven and evidence-based policy formulation, it said. It suggested that PBCRs can be linked to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission to record data of cancer patients to get real-time information on cancer-related illnesses. "The committee has taken note that currently PBCRs cover 16 per cent of the Indian population only. Therefore, it is quite necessary that the National Cancer Registry Programme cover the population of India extensively, in order to have a unified national database for scientific understanding of epidemiology of cancer," the report said. Stressing a robust screening mechanism for cancer, the committee suggested that one day in a month can be fixed for cancer screening. While appreciating the government's impetus on an institutional framework for cancer care and management and financial support for combating cancer, the committee said cancer must be dealt with separately instead of being a part of other lifestyle and non-communicable diseases. It recommended the demerger of the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) from the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) to have a better focus on screening, early diagnosis and management of cancer. In its report, the committee said that in all the leftover districts Non-Communicable Diseases (<keyword id="131571" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ncd" source="Orion">NCD</keyword>) clinics should be set up at the earliest and more healthcare professionals be trained for screening of common cancer. The panel highlighted that adequate human resource in cancer centres is crucial for their complete operationalisation and recommended setting up subsidised or free accommodation for patients and their relatives near cancer hospitals. The National Health Authority (<keyword id="672062" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nha" source="Orion">NHA</keyword>) should consider including all types of cancer diagnostic tests under the Ayushman Bharat <keyword id="6524177" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pradhan-mantri" source="Orion">Pradhan Mantri</keyword> Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), it said. It appreciated that in compliance with the committee's recommendations, the NHA has approved the inclusion of diagnostic tests under the AB-PMJAY with respect to breast, cervical and oral cancer. The committee noted that the health ministry has set up the e-Sanjivini Ayushman Bharat-Health Wellness Centre (AB-HWC), where doctor-to-doctor telemedicine services can be delivered through the hub and spoke model. It recommended that this model should be strengthened so that the opinions of experts can be provided to cancer patients in isolated and backward areas. The ministry should instruct National Cancer Grid (<keyword id="1502308" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ncg" source="Orion">NCG</keyword>) officials to explore group negotiation of commonly used high-value cancer drugs with pharmaceutical companies through a transparent central tendering platform to have substantial discounts on cancer drugs. Since the mandate of the National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Authority is to ensure the availability of drugs at affordable prices, the committee reiterated that the pricing of cancer drugs should not be guided by profit as in the case of the other businesses. If it is not possible to reduce the profit margin of such drugs, the government may subsidise it, it said in its report. "The committee feels that the submission made by the Secretary, Department of Pharmaceutical, before the committee that over a period of about eight years or so the actual price increase in the drugs had been only between two to four per cent, does not mean that each manufacturer keeps the price of the drug below 10 per cent, as the mechanism permits them to make the hike up to 10 per cent," the report said. The committee said the government should rationalise the annual price hike limit of cancer drugs from 10 to five per cent in order to rescue poor cancer patients. It also suggested the ministry look at subsidising the healthcare cost for cancer patients and declare radiotherapy service as an essential commodity. The ministry should take the matter on board immediately and declare radiotherapy service as an essential commodity so that patients can get some relief from bearing the high cost of the service, it said. India?</cmsannotation> The EY report highlighted that the semiconductor manufacturing process requires unique and sometimes scarce raw materials and chemical substances. Due to their unique and specialised character, these tend not to be widely available and can sometimes only be mined in conflict areas. The scarcity of semiconductors in the past few months brutally exposed India's original equipment manufacturers' soft underbelly — their heavy reliance on imported components. The government has also introduced an ambitious production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes to encourage in-house production. The most important here is semiconductors or chips that form the central component of items from auto to laptops and mobile phones — as the current disruptions showed, it is an area where we can ill-afford to depend on others. <div type="image" title="Capture" msid="81137751" hostid="261"></div> Although the country has developed expertise in chip designing, it still lacks fabrication facilities, requiring huge investments. Microprocessor chips are produced in high technology facilities called semiconductor fabrication units or simply FAB units. India currently has a limited number of fabless startups and companies with state-of-the-art R&amp;D centres focusing on chip design. <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/business/is-semiconductor-manufacturing-in-india-an-unworkable-project-863338.html">Reports</a> indicate that semiconductor fabs have investments starting around $8 billion, and the numbers climb rapidly. The business also requires hefty running costs, and technology needs to be upgraded typically every 3-4 years. This wouldn’t be the first time India would try to build semiconductors fabrication units. Earlier in 2006, a <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/semindia-infosys-may-sign-mous-with-andhra-today-106021601088_1.html">Bangalore-based SemIndia signed a contract </a>with the Andhra Pradesh government to set up a wafer manufacturing unit. India needs chipset manufacturers — lots of them. Here is why.

New Delhi, Apr 12 () The lockdown and work from home period has underscored the importance of consumer durables and electronic products, and such items will feature high on people's shopping lists once the curbs are relaxed, as per retail store chain Croma. Products such as laptops, smartphones and printers have become crucial for those working from home, while household appliances like washing machines, ACs, TVs and vacuum cleaners are now more important than ever for households. "These are all likely to feature high on the list of people as they come out of lockdown, especially since there is already talk of scenarios where another lockdown might be required," Infiniti Retail CMO Ritesh Ghosal told . Infiniti Retail, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, runs the Croma brand of stores. However, like other retailers, Croma is also expecting a hit on business due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent nationwide lockdown. "We have lost business for between one and two weeks in March depending on the store and the city and the first 15 days of April, at the very least. So yes, it is going to affect our business performance for these two quarters. "Further, as this is the period the summer sets in across the country and cooling gadgets like ACs, refrigerators and coolers sell in large quantities, the lost sales will impact the annual performance of these key categories," he added. The company is also factoring in disruptions in supply of several key categories once the lockdown ends. "There will be disruptions in supply in several categories as they rely on a heavily globalised supply chain. Till things do not settle down across the world, supplies of electronic gadgets will stay unreliable," said Ghosal. The appliances and consumer electronics industry was already facing shortage of components from China since February and March. Asked whether the e-commerce sector would gain prominence in sales of consumer durables once the lockdown period ends, Ghosal said people are "disillusioned" with the unreliability of e-retail logistics. "In India, the lockdown has seen a complete collapse of the logistics arms of the e-commerce sector and people are fairly disillusioned with this sector. "Retailers across the spectrum are waking up to the e-commerce opportunity and e-commerce is waking up to the reality that they really do not the robustness of operations to deliver to the market's expectation," he said. Croma has presence in both offline and online platforms. It presently operates 112 stores across 19 major cities. "Croma has a digital arm which enables digital purchases, offers assisted shopping by store staff and express delivery from the nearest store. We are ready and equipped to scale up this service for customers hesitant to step out of their homes," he added. Despite the sluggish business environment, Croma would go ahead with its expansion plans. "Currently, there are a handful of stores ready for opening plus another set in various stages of fit-out. Beyond this, we have a pipeline in progress till 2025. At this point, there is no decision to pull back or pause the expansion. "We have faith in our business model and also that the future of India is bright. If not in a quarter or two, definitely sometime soon India will resume its status as the fastest growing major economy in the world and we want to be in a position to be part of that story," said Ghosal. Croma is also in touch with its property owners and is negotiating waiver of rents for the lockdown period like other retailers. "This is a time of crisis for both us and them. We are all trying to navigate the financial nightmare of unsold inventory on the one hand and salary and interest payments on the other. I cannot say what the final outcome will be only that we are sailing in the same boat and will jointly figure a way out," he said. 18 small everyday changes that can help you lose weight

Wake up. It’s your mobile phone that’s sending off the alarm now. It must have been ages since you got your alarm clock to wake you up. Where’s it, in the attic? Or did you discard it already? Ah, there’s a clock hanging in the hallway. But, who cares when your smartphone is smarter than you are. It has a clock, a timer, and all those apps that make your life less complicated? Really, you didn’t think you needed before right? 
 
Get to office and check mails, go through your schedule and submit at the hands of your laptop and organiser. Oh, have you synced your organiser with your phone? Just in case you forget that important meeting, your phone should send you an alert. Life’s easy! 
 
On the way home, your GPS tells you to take the same route you have been taking since ages. Yet, you have got into a habit of hearing that soothing voice that directs you home, tells you about traffic snarls and how delayed you would be. Add another crease on your forehead. But then, at least you know what to expect on the road. 
 
Getting home has a schedule. Speak to family; but keep it to bare minimum. Television takes over. Time to eat and sleep. Dinner’s in the fridge and then on to the microwave. Don’t forget to reach out to your kindle. Reading is a good thing. Who cares about a book when you have your kindle? Close the burning eyes after reading. Sleep before you wake up again and repeat the routine! 
 
Now, let’s revamp again. Just count the number of digital devices that you use through the day. How many hours pass before you go from one digital device to another? And from one technology to the next? 
 
World over, unless you are living in some remote Afghani or African or Indian village, you would have more or less the same schedule. How do you think you are a ‘self-made’ individual if your smartphone turns out to be smarter than you? 
 
We struggle with the baggage of modern life so much so that when it exhausts us, we suddenly find ourselves thrust in the deep dark hole that has no signs of light or life. Imagine a world without the hurry, without technology and without all those gadgets that we think are necessary for life. Can we live? Try living without them once, and you will certainly know you not only live, but also emerge with added clarity in your mind. 
 
That phase would be called ‘Digital Detox’. 
 
Why is it essential to do a digital detox? Because just as you are health conscious and care about your arteries, liver and overall fitness; your mind also needs some time away from the hustle bustle. Your brain needs to comprehend with the world around you, not the one that’s make-believe and exists inside those numerous apps on the smartphone or laptop. 
 Because, experts say this isn’t yet the age of <keyword id="413033" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-revolution">digital revolution</keyword> yet. We are just getting there, and this is a small beginning for the big things to come. How intolerant can your mind get then? 
 
See the danger sign even before it socks out your one eye and leaves another bruised for life. It is easier to learn to switch off, at least for a while, before your life shuts off. 
 
How can you do a digital detox? The answer is simple and something probably you would even know. But, it is the execution that is important. Challenges lie there, that can either make you or break you. 
 
Digital detox is much needed like your resolve to quit smoking, or drinking binge, or curbing the aggressiveness behind road rage. 
 
What goes into it is simpler than making a soup. Here, try this recipe. To begin with, decide a time for detox. Take a break from work and tell your office you are going to someplace where the network won’t reach you. Switch off. Literally, and figuratively! 
 
You need at least 24 hours to understand the exhilaration this experience can bring you. Go on a trek, or simply read a physical book, or do some gardening and listen to your children speak. Have real time conversations with people, and not mails or chats or whatsapp messages. 
 
Log into the world. Let the technology, for once, take a hike. In this sense, you would have truly added a day of life into your tech-laden life. And, you won’t regret it.
