<ul class="summary-list"><li>The way we classify <keyword id="551982" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="hurricanes">hurricanes</keyword> could be misleading the public about how dangerous they really are.</li><li>The most common scale, which measures hurricanes on a scale from Category 1 to Category 5, only takes wind speed into account.</li><li>But water-based threats like storm surge and flooding are responsible for 90% of the deaths in powerful storms, and some experts prefer alternative measurements that factor that in.</li></ul>Water is deadlier than wind when it comes to hurricanes.In fact, water causes 90% of the loss of life related to powerful storms, <a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/bams/article/95/3/341/60421/Fatalities-in-the-United-States-from-Atlantic">according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a>.But the way we classify hurricanes doesn't always take that into account, leading to a public misconception of how dangerous certain hurricanes actually are.The classification system most people are used to just takes wind speed into account. There's no single scale to indicate both how strong and how wet the systems are. The <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php">Saffir-Simpson Scale</a>, ranging from 1 to 5, measures the speed of sustained winds of a hurricane. It was developed in the 1970s to calculate how much wind can impact property.A storm becomes a Category 1 hurricane when winds reach 74 mph. This kind of speed can damage roofs, sidings, and knock large branches out of trees."Major hurricanes" start at Category 3 once winds increase to 111 mph. They can cause devastating destruction to well-constructed buildings, and there's a high change of injury or death. Category 5 hurricanes have winds over 157 mph, and are the top of the scale. These systems can devastate large areas, leaving them uninhabitable for months. For a while, the Saffir-Simpson Scale also categorized storm surge, but it became difficult to communicate the specific dangers of each storm to the public, since the threats from water and wind can be so different.Storm surge happens when winds push water from the sea onto the land flooding large areas. It's fast, powerful, and can send 10 to 20 feet of water several miles inland from the coast.So in 2017, NOAA's National Hurricane Center started issuing <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/warning/">official storm surge watches and warnings</a>. These advisories are key to helping people prepare even if they're not directly in the path of a storm. The Hurricane Severity Index is owned by <a href="https://www.stormgeo.com/">StormGeo</a>, a private weather intelligence company.It uses a 50-point scale that measures the size of a hurricane and the intensity of its winds. Each component gets 25 points and then that final score can be used to more accurately determine the damage that could come in a storm's wake."Size is very important because it matters for the aerial extent of the impact — how much time a hurricane is going to hit you. Things like storm surge, wave heights, rain amounts are greater, Hurricane Severity Index co-creator Bob Weinzapfel said.The HSI can also help people <a href="https://www.stormgeo.com/weather/articles/how-to-estimate-hurricanes-damage-potential/">compare storms</a> they might've already experienced to get an idea of what to expect. According to the StormGeo, the index would've placed Katrina's damage potential in line with a Category 5 instead of a Category 3 like it was labeled when it made landfall in Louisiana. <keyword id="70865" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hurricane-Katrina">Hurricane Katrina</keyword>'s intensity would rank only 13 out of 25, but its size would've been considered a 23 out of 25. "The pictures and the memories of Katrina aren't really about the winds, the wind damage. Granted, Bush is a Democratic Socialist, but the McCloskey's deliberate and repeated invocation of Marx made me think of "cultural Marxism" — an obsession of conspiracy theorists like former InfoWars editor-at-large <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/78mnny/unwrapping-the-conspiracy-theory-that-drives-the-alt-right">Paul Joseph Watson</a>.There's nothing particularly novel about hearing these things at an overtly partisan and propagandistic event. Conservatives don't like socialism, they like their "culture," and they can't understand why more Black people won't vote for them. What's striking is how these phrases, which are repeated like mantras on right-wing YouTube, have made it to the big kids' table at the RNC.Hearing these phrases and bugaboos sprinkled throughout RNC speeches feels in some sense like a callback to their original sources. During the 2016 Republican convention, nominee <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> looked at America and famously declared, "I alone can fix it." Narcissists are wonderfully predictable, so it is no wonder that the theme of the 2020 RNC is also, "I alone can fix it." Every speaker personalizes their praise of Trump. It is Trump who sped up FDA regulators, saving me from cancer. It is Trump who protects my streets when Black Marxists march on it. It is Trump who lowered my taxes. The convention stunts reinforce this Trump fetishism. Former hostages have been enlisted to slavishly thank the president for rescuing them (as if rescuing Americans isn't the job of any president.) A reformed bank robber was pulled on to national TV to be pardoned by Trump, as though the great accomplishment there was Trump pardoning him, not John Ponder doing so much to help others. Trump orchestrated a White House naturalization ceremony for immigrants, as though his personal benediction was allowing them to become American, not their own persistence. God knows there was plenty of Reagan-worship and Obama-mania. But Trump has taken presidential vanity to a horrid extreme. He has made the <keyword id="107894" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Republican-Party">Republican Party</keyword> a projection of himself, and centralized all attention. What's so screwy about this politics-as-idolatry is that it's antithetical to how we all know the world works. To hear RNC speakers tell it, any good thing that happened in the past four years happened because Trump personally did it. Yet you only need to spend about 15 minutes in any job to realize that everyone is replaceable. (As Charles de Gaulle, a fine narcissist himself, put it: "The cemeteries are filled with indispensable men.") This is especially true in any large institution, where the grand armature of tradition, bureaucracy, and systems allow stuff to get done, regardless of who is at the top of the org chart. Trump didn't rescue those hostages: A vast government apparatus, experts in the defense and state departments, connections built for decades between governments — that's what rescued the hostages. Consider Trump's two signature accomplishments as president: the confirmation of hundreds of judges and the tax cut. The judges got through because a well-funded, well-organized conservative network has been training and grooming and making lists of judicial candidates for decades; and because a massive concerted effort has been made to solidify the Republican majority in the Senate. Trump signed the papers, but decades of work and institutional planning made it possible. Similarly, the tax cut was not the product of Trump's genius, but of the maneuvering and planning of hundreds of lobbyists and Republican interest groups that had been waiting for a window with full Republican control of Congress and the White House. If anything, the occasions when Trump has been most personally involved have been most disastrous for the party and the country. The COVID response would have been much better left in the hands of experts and bureaucrats. His personalized diplomacy with thuggish dictators has emboldened Russian President Putin and allowed Turkish President Erdogan to crush our longtime Kurdish allies. The truth is that any person thrust into the job of president would likely do it fine — better than Trump in some ways, worse in others, but on balance, fine. Structures exist to enable to anyone to do the job. And any Republican would have gotten the same judges through and the same tax cuts passed. He is not special, and don't let the RNC worship convince you otherwise. — DP<div type="image" title="Chad Wolf RNC" height="1092" width="2000" msid="77770807" hostid="261"></div>Trump's RNC naturalization ceremony was a disgusting trollHe came onto the political scene in 2015 making the supposedly violent scourge of illegal immigration his campaign's bête noire. Five years later he staged a naturalization ceremony featuring five new Americans of color in the White House. One of them was a man originally from Ghana, which is among the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2018/01/13/ghanaian-president-to-trump-we-are-not-a-shithole-country/">African countries Trump referred</a> to as a "shithole." He said this in a meeting with senators, and juxtaposed such immigrants with ones he'd prefer to have coming to America, from places like Norway.The whole ceremony — which may have been an illegal use of a public building to stage political campaign stunt — was classic Trump. It was a flagrant troll job, a sick joke, and it used innocent people as pawns in an attempt to demonstrate his false benevolence. It's hardly surprising, but Trump's earlier posture about "illegals" was a mere smokescreen for an overt hostility to all immigration.He's had <keyword id="646841" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Stephen-Miller">Stephen Miller</keyword>, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hatemonger-jean-guerrero-interview-stephen-miller-white-nationalism-and-2020-8">his curious affinities for white nationalist thought leaders and their policy goals</a>, directing immigration policy, most notoriously instituting <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/06/stephen-miller-family-separation/563132/">zero tolerance enforcement</a> for misdemeanor border crossings and separating families as a punitive deterrent. The US under Trump has admitted the fewest refugees since such data has been recorded — <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2019/09/27/us-slashes-refugee-limit-to-historic-low-of-18000-infographic/#4e54e5634e6c">just 18,000 last year</a>. And Trump <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/08/12/trump-administration-ramps-up-its-war-legal-immigration/">instituted onerous roadblocks for legal immigration</a> including travel and asylum bans, rejecting immigration paperwork for minor clerical mistakes, and denying Green Cards to legal immigrants who've ever used a public welfare benefit. Trump's naturalization stunt wasn't for his base, it was a bird-flip to his staunch detractors. As the good book says in Romans 3:23: For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Am I right?The hypocrisy of these people — leaders of the church — is not lost on all Evangelicals. Another one of Graham's granddaughters, Jerushah Duford, wrote an <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/voices/2020/08/25/billy-graham-evangelicals-support-donald-trump-hypocrisy-column/5625617002/">essay excoriating</a> Trump after his church stunt saying that she feels "homeless" since the church's embrace of such a man.Unfortunately for Duford, the Evangelical movement's political activity is rooted in the kind of hypocrisy Duford disdains — in the most anti-democratic, illiberal elements of American society. The way the story of their political awakening is told, the Evangelical political movement started with Roe vs. Wade. But that isn't true. Evangelical interest in abortion didn't begin until about half a decade after Roe vs. Wade was decided in 1973. In 1971, 1974, and 1976 the <a href="https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2012/october-web-only/when-evangelicals-were-pro-choice-another-fake-history.html">Southern Baptist Convention</a> passed resolutions affirming that abortion should be legal.What galvanized Evangelicals was not abortion, but segregation and tax avoidance. It <a href="https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/05/religious-right-real-origins-107133">wasn't Roe vs. Wade</a>, it was lesser known <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/06/20/734303135/throughline-traces-evangelicals-history-on-the-abortion-issue">Green vs. Connally.</a> After schools started to integrate in the late 1960s and early 1970s, many white Evangelicals started sending their kids to tax-exempt private religious schools. A group of black families in Holmes County, Mississippi thought that tax exempt status was unfair and sued to have it removed. They took it all the way up to the Supreme Court, and they won.The loss of segregated private schools galvanized Christians leaders like Jerry Falwell Sr., who eventually started the political organization The Moral Majority in 1979. He did so with the help of a conservative activist named Paul Weyrich. Weyrich was trying to expand the GOP base, and he linked Evangelicals up with anti-abortion advocates who, slowly throughout the 1970s, convinced Evangelicals to join them on the abortion issue.But again, abortion isn't what got us here. It was racism and taxes. So it makes sense when you hear Graham's granddaughter, Cissie Graham Lynch, at the RNC saying:"The Biden-Harris vision for America leaves no room for people of faith. Whether you're a baker, a florist, or a football coach, they will force the choice between being obedient to God, or to Caesar...because the radical Left's god is government power." The story of Evangelical political activity is one of a Church in conflict with the teachings of its Messiah, Jesus Christ. He told his followers to pay taxes as the Romans instructed, to obey the rules of the emperor — "To render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." He never articulated a single policy ambition or even a vague, grand vision for the country.With the Republican National Convention (RNC) set to kick off its four-day run in Charlotte tonight, the entity once known as the <keyword id="107894" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Republican-Party">Republican Party</keyword> has taken the lead of its Dear Leader: It stands for nothing at all, other than Trump. It's not a Grand Old Party anymore, it's just a host for a Trump personality cult. One of the requisite features of a party convention is a committee of delegates negotiating and agreeing to a party platform. Such platforms are non-binding and ceremonial, but they do provide a window into the party's id every four years.But given the limitations presented by the coronavirus pandemic, <a href="https://prod-cdn-static.gop.com/media/documents/RESOLUTION_REGARDING_THE_REPUBLICAN_PARTY_PLATFORM.pdf?_ga=2.109560193.504857691.1598219603-2087748323.1598219603">the RNC said in a statement</a> that it "did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new platform without the breadth of perspectives within the ever-growing Republican movement" and would instead simply "continue to enthusiastically support the President's America-first agenda."That might be a plausible excuse had the Democrats not had an almost-entirely virtual convention last week and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/19/us/politics/democratic-party-platform.html">somehow come up with a 2020 platform</a>. The lack of a fresh RNC platform for 2020 matters little in the scheme of things. Voters don't refer to them, politicians don't necessarily adhere to them, and no one remembers them any more than a few days after they're introduced. But punting on a platform this year shows that the GOP as presently constituted stands for nothing besides fealty to its Trump.As <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/08/24/republicanmeltdown-trump-convention-400039">Politico's Tim Alberta</a> puts it: "The supposed canons of GOP orthodoxy — limited government, free enterprise, institutional conservation, moral rectitude, fiscal restraint, global leadership — have in recent years gone from elastic to expendable."What's replaced the Republicans' nominal principles is a reactionary populism that defines itself by its enemies: the media, immigrants, and "the libs." This was a winning strategy in 2016, thanks in no small part to the electoral college and <a href="https://theoutline.com/post/1422/shattered-hillary-clinton-campaign?zd=1&amp;zi=y26xgxangxan">Hillary Clinton's historically inept campaign</a>. The rest of these states are confused, and recognize that a piecemeal solution to this problem is no solution at all. They need the federal government to get back to work and pass a law.But Trump's EOs basically blew up already-fraught negotiations between the White House and House Democrats. Now Congress is on vacation. Meanwhile Goldman Sachs estimates that the end of one benefit from the previous aid bill — a $600 per week federal supplement to unemployment checks — will drain $70 billion worth of Americans personal income this month alone.This seems intentional. Sen. <keyword id="192852" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mitch-McConnell">Mitch McConnell</keyword> had a terrible time getting the bill through his caucus. Despite the fact that coronavirus cases are still surging around the country, the libertarian wing of the GOP didn't want to keep signing checks. As a result, the bill that came out of the Senate was so far from what would be acceptable to House Democrats that it was going to take weeks of negotiation to get something passable to the floor.So, Trump basically just said "screw it." He burst into negotiations like the Kool-Aid Man and now we've got nothing.Trump's EOs gave him the opportunity to look like he was doing something on TV, which is always enough to satisfy this White House. The Senate got to avoid working on a bill that it hates. If you're incredibly cynical (and these people are) you could see this as a win, even though the biggest losers here are Americans in desperate need.Back in April I wrote that even after lockdown, Americans would live<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-world-economy-will-shrink-after-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-2020-4"> in a shrunken world</a> — shrunken by the fact that human interaction would have to be limited until there's a vaccine. Economic transactions are mostly human interactions, so you see where this is going. A coronavirus world is one of naturally depressed demand even in the best case scenario, where the government is doing all it can. We don't live in that scenario, 170,000 people are dead and all Trump can say is "it is what it is."Now we have<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/08/20/us-has-two-economies-how-much-longer-will-losing-side-stand-that/"> two economies</a>, as Catherine Rampell put it over at WaPo. One belongs to the mostly white-collar workers who can work from home, own stocks, and can keep saving money. They were fine before and they're fine now. Their comfort is being reflected in the stock market, where valuations seem to be leaping over this crisis entirely. That's because the people who own and trade stocks have no problem thinking about a post-coronavirus future. Unlike the rest of America, they're not trying to figure out how to survive day by day.That brings us to the other economy in which more Americans live. In that economy of mostly blue-collar workers, jobs have barely recovered and many businesses have not reopened. Home mortgage payment delinquencies are at their<a href="https://www.mba.org/2020-press-releases/august/mortgage-delinquencies-spike-in-the-second-quarter-of-2020"> highest rate</a> since the financial crisis.<a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/more-americans-go-hungry-amid-coronavirus-pandemic-census-shows-11597570200"> People are going hungry.</a> Wall Street is starting to call this a "K-shaped recovery." Some people are going up, even more people are going down.The middle class was evaporating before, but now it's being sucked dry. None of the president's dog and pony show circus antics are changing that. If the cub lives, <a href="https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/brief-history-giant-pandas-zoo">it will be her fourth.</a>China's Giant Panda lend-lease program is one of the cleverest examples of public diplomacy in the modern world. Exploiting the world's crush on the black-and-white semi-bears, China rents pandas out to zoos for huge fees — $1 million a year <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/panda-most-overrated-animal-ever-2018-5#:~:text=The%20Chinese%20government%20owns%20nearly,one%2Dtime%20%24400%2C000%20baby%20tax.">has been reported</a>. The zoos then pay monstrous amounts to feed and care for the animals, $500,000 a year per bear, and undertake captive breeding programs. China owns all cubs, which are repatriated to China at age four and enrolled in <a href="https://www.pandasinternational.org/panda-reserves/">China's elaborate breeding, research, and re-wilding program</a>. (Mei Xiang's first three offspring were all repatriated to China.) Americans have addicted themselves to pandas. They're the main <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2019/11/18/bei-bei-showered-with-attention-national-zoo-prepares-send-him-china-tuesday/">draw for the National Zoo</a>, and also have attracted huge crowds in other cities where they've been loaned out, including San Diego and Atlanta. But why are we duped by them? Pandas are gorgeous, but — as with too-beautiful humans — pandas exploit their beauty to cover up their deep character flaws. Pandas are lazy and ill-tempered. They barely move! (The hours I wasted as a DC schoolkid waiting for one of the pandas to do something, anything — just to lift a paw!) Pandas don't seem to be interested in their own survival: It takes heroic, hideously expensive efforts to get them to breed. They're largely indifferent parents. (Don't get me started about the DC panda that<a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2015/08/150824-pandas-national-zoo-twins-animals-science/"> crushed its own newborn</a>.) Americans are forking over enormous sums of money to China so they can gawp at dumb, brutish supermodel animals. We should be spending those millions on American-made products. How about bison? Or black-footed ferrets? Or manatees? Or pumas? Pumas are plenty gorgeous! The Trump administration is frantic that TikTok and Huawei are infiltrating the US and hooking Americans on Chinese products. Multiple airlines companies already issued travel advisories and updates on their flight plans due to the continuing heavy rainfall in Chennai Tamilnadu. The authorities have advised the public to not visit beaches in Puducherry as well as in Tamil Nadu's Chennai, including Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam and Edward Elliot Beach. Fishermen are not venturing into the sea. Since last night, we have closed all beaches. We have deployed nearly 300 personnel across all the beaches of Puducherry and we are coordinating with the NDRF also," the SSP said. The coastal areas of Puducherry witnessed rough sea and gusty winds on Saturday morning due to the impact of the cyclone. Puducherry received moderate rain, as per IMD, in the morning today but the rough sea was seen more than usual.

The extreme weather patterns are driving <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-insurance-hurricanes-extreme-weather-relocate-to-ocala-2023-10">some to relocate to the center of the state</a> — or even out of state — in an effort to avoid storms and the insurance premiums they drive up.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-homeowners-insurance-rising-costs-moving-to-wisconsin-2023-9">John and Natalia</a> moved to Dell Prairie, Wisconsin, from Plantation, Florida, just west of Fort Lauderdale, when their home insurance doubled to $12,000 a year after they replaced their roof."Before the roof, we paid about $6,000 for our insurance premium," John told Business Insider in 2023."But our premium still doubled from the year before," Natalia added. "Before we left, we were paying $12,000 for insurance."Helene comes just one year after Hurricane Idalia sparked massive damage across Florida's panhandle. Hurricanes today are<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-hurricanes-why-storms-are-wetter-stronger-slower-2019-7"> stronger, slower, and wetter</a> because of rising temperatures.The high cost of home insurance sometimes prompts people to go without it.According to an analysis of US Census data by NBC News, around 18% of homeowners in Florida are without home insurance.In some of the more populous counties in Florida, like Miami-Dade County and Broward County, 24.6% and 21.7% of homeowners, respectively, don't have insurance. In Leon County, where Tallahassee, the capital, is located, 13.8% of homeowners are without insurance — but there are about 460,000 fewer homeowners there than in Miami-Dade County.The amount of damage a storm causes typically affects insurance premiums. The more damage, the more likely premiums will rise at renewal. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/us/news/catastrophe/insurers-brace-for-up-to-15-billion-in-losses-if-helene-hits-tallahassee-507530.aspx">Insurance Business</a> reported on Friday that if Helene made landfall near Tallahassee, insurers could lose up to $15 billion. (While it did make landfall in the area, local news reported Friday that Florida's capital <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wtxl.com/news/local-news/in-your-neighborhood/emergency-operations-center-hurricane-helene-sept-27-2024">did not suffer a direct hit</a>.)The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation estimated Hurricane Idalia — which made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 in 2023 — totaled more than $309.5 million in losses.Helene, which mostly affected the northwestern part of Florida, may end up causing less damage than feared because there are fewer people in the panhandle."This looks like it will not be a large loss event for Florida insurers," Mark Friedlander, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, an insurance information organization, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tampabay.com/hurricane/2024/09/26/florida-hurricane-helene-storm-insurance-losses-desantis/">the Tampa Bay Times</a>.
