Extremely severe cyclone storm cyclone ‘Fani’ hit <keyword id="6357961" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="odisha">Odisha</keyword> earlier in the morning and is now moving northwards. It is now located 418 km southwest of Kolkata and 364 Km, southwest of the East Midnapore district sea resort Digha. Six districts in Gangetic West Bengal likely to be affected are East and West Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Kolkata. 12.15pm As a precaution against cyclone 'Fani', the Indian Railway has cancelled 223 trains in the Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section, along the coastal lines of Odisha on the Kolkata-Chennai route till May 4, officials said. A senior Railway Ministry official told IANS: "140 Mail and Express trains and 83 passenger trains have been cancelled till May 4 afternoon on the Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section (along Odisha coastline) of Kolkata-Chennai route." He said that nine trains have been diverted and four trains have been short terminated. 12.00pm As per PIB, Cyclonic Storm 'Fani' lay centered at 10.30 Hours IST today. Puri reported maximum sustained wind speed of 142 Kmph gusting to 174 kmph as of 07.30 IST today. It is very likely to move north-north eastwards and weaken into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 3 hours. 11:46 a.m. West Bengal chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly cancelled all her political rallies. "We are monitoring the situation 24x7 and doing all it takes. I appeal to all people to cooperate. Passengers must reschedule their flights for before October 18, and the flight needs to be rebooked by October 10.American said it capped fares for flights leaving out of all the airports included in its travel alert.<h2 id="441a319f-6180-4f51-888c-a4c2faab0011">Delta</h2>Delta said it was waiving fare differences for passengers who planned to travel through <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.delta.com/us/en/advisories/weather-alerts/tropical-storm-milton-florida">nine Florida airports</a> from October 7 to 10. The analysts' outlook comes after last week's blockbuster September jobs report ignited speculation of a no-landing scenario. The report showed that the economy added 254,000 jobs in September, far above analyst estimates.Economic and income growth has also proved strong, with a set of revisions last month showing GDP grew faster than initially thought in the second quarter.The consumer price index, meanwhile, came in slightly higher than estimates on Thursday. They say the Fed will likely cut two to four more times even if the labor and economic activity remain strong. I know other parts of Florida were badly damaged but, for us, it was fine.My family and I are huge Disney fans, and this was our fourth visit to Disney World. We'd seen that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Hurricane Helene </a>had passed and thought, "Oh, thank goodness. We missed it by a week."Then, all of a sudden, we heard that Milton was coming. I thought positively that it was going to miss us. Disney offered a 40% discount on our two rooms for hurricane relief. They would have cost over $1,000 each on a typical Friday night.The hotel has been very accommodating. The park closed at 2 p.m. Wednesday, so we spent the afternoon in the lobby. They had activities for families, such as crafting and making s'mores.<h2 id="82c3bc5c-e924-4b3a-b38c-cc76e0076af8">The cost of dining was reduced at our hotel</h2>There was a nice bar. We hung out doing puzzles and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dos-mattel-uno-card-game-sequel-review-2018-2">playing card games like Uno </a>that we'd bought at the gift store. We get along fine — I'm here with my husband, Brian, 58, daughter, Mia, and her boyfriend, Jeremy, both 25, and our younger daughter, Sofia, 21 — but, when you're with your family in such a confined space, you have to dig deep for patience sometimes.Some of the hotel's restaurants had a limited menu, but the prices were reduced accordingly. We paid about $26 per person for a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--focus-visible" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-barbecue-restaurant-bbq-every-state-yelp">barbecue-themed dinner </a>instead of $40 and $14 instead of $26 each for a breakfast skillet.The park is closed Thursday. At the time, hurricane resistance was not on Cusick's radar.Cusick, who manages a drone operations company, said he moved from St. Augustine, Florida, two years ago partly for work and partly for Asheville's proximity to the mountainous landscape. Plus, he said he figured he'd be safer from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/track-hurricane-ian-live-updates-2022-9#hurricane-ian-weakens-to-category-2-with-a-catastrophic-storm-surge-105-mph-winds-and-flooding">natural disasters</a> if he moved about 400 miles inland.But at the end of September, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Hurricane Helene</a> made landfall and worked its way up to Asheville — a town of about 95,000 people that was experiencing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-destroyed-asheville-genz-residents-rebuild-climate-safe-haven-2024-10">an influx of Gen Zers</a> and young residents like Cusick.Cusick said that by September 26, Asheville experienced a few days of rain and a "little bit of flooding," but everything was operating as usual. He decided to go out for a night of drinking downtown, leaving his Rivian parked on Tunnel Road next to the Swannanoa River.That night, his friend drove him home. By the next morning, Hurricane Helene flooded the entire city of Asheville, temporarily knocking out cellphone service. Gov. Roy Cooper later stated that at least six dozen people were killed in Buncombe County, where Asheville is located, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnews.com/article/hurricane-helene-fema-826effecab238ff0acf0556ad64b0df2">The Associated Press</a>."Where I live was completely flooded," Cusick said. "I couldn't even get out if I wanted to, let alone call somebody to take me back to my vehicle." Cusick said that it wasn't until September 28 that the floodwaters started to recede, and he managed to find cellphone service.When his friend drove him back to Tunnel Road, where his Rivian was parked, Cusick realized his car was missing."It was not where I parked and I started to freak out," he said. "I was like, 'Oh it's gone. It's gone. It's literally gone.'"EVs like the Rivian are equipped with trackers that allow drivers to find the location of their vehicles. Silt and mud from the Swannanoa River, Cusick said, had engulfed his truck.Relief briefly washed over Cusick, but he said he immediately assumed his car was totaled."There's no way in hell I'm going to be able to get into this thing and boot it right up," he recalled thinking.But when Cusick walked up to the vehicle, Rivian's door handle, which sits flush into the door panel much like a Tesla, popped out. Inside, the vehicle was "completely dry," Cusick said.He was able to get inside and start his truck."I probably have more questions than anyone," Cusick said. "I wasn't there for any of this. All I know is where I found the vehicle."A spokesperson for Rivian didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. A Rivian spokesperson told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://insideevs.com/news/735934/rivian-r1t-flood-hurrican-helene/">Inside EVs</a>, which earlier reported on Cusick's truck, that Rivian battery packs are sealed to provide floodwater protection."As part of our extensive battery testing, we also run salt spray tests to prove that our corrosion mitigations through the life of our packs are robust. "And I was like 'Hey, I got one. They're built into my car.'"Cusick said his generator helped power a food truck that was providing hot meals to local residents. He said it also helped power a chainsaw he would use to clear roads.On September 29, Cusick said a man interviewed him near downtown Asheville about his truck. By the beginning of October, Cusick's experience went <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1072169541181902&amp;id=100004158185937&amp;mibextid=SphRi8">viral</a>. Rivian soon reached out to Cusick, the Asheville resident said.The nearest Rivian service center is almost four hours away from Cusick, in Atlanta. Newell about "atmospheric rivers and bombs."The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/stories/what-are-atmospheric-rivers">describes atmospheric rivers</a> as "relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky – that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics." Atmospheric rivers can carry the water vapor equivalent of the water flow at the mouth of the Mississippi River, according to the federal agency. The vapor is released as snow or rain when the rivers make landfall. They start near the equator when the sun heats water, which evaporates and rises into the atmosphere, <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/news/featured-story/rivers-sky-6-facts-you-should-know-about-atmospheric-rivers">according to the US Geological Survey</a>, which also notes they are expected to intensify in California because of climate change. Since the term first appeared in 1994, it's <a href="https://cw3e.ucsd.edu/atmospheric-rivers-rising-interest-in-science-and-the-media/#:~:text=The%20term%20%E2%80%9Catmospheric%20river%E2%80%9D%20was,transport%20across%20the%20mid%2Dlatitudes">increasingly been used in academic research and news reports</a>. In 2019, researchers at UC San Diego <a href="https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-atmospheric-river-storms-scale-20190205-story.html">announced a new scale</a> that measures the strength of atmospheric rivers. Similar systems exist for tornadoes and hurricanes. In 2021, the LA Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-01-28/what-are-these-atmospheric-rivers-that-bring-heavy-rain-and-snow-to-california">published an explainer</a> on atmospheric rivers, a term which now regularly appears in headlines. Google Trends shows a spike in searches for the term in California since December 18, when heavy storms started to threaten the state. Those storms <a href="https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/no-rest-for-the-dreary-another-atmospheric-river-aims-to-soak-california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrived over the holidays</a>, causing flooding, power outages, some fatalities, and flight delays. There are still 44,000 customers <a href="https://poweroutage.us/area/state/california">without power in California</a>. AccuWeather meteorologists <a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-forecasts/san-francisco-los-angeles-to-receive-more-heavy-rain-as-2023-gets-underway/1433011">expect another atmospheric river to hit the state</a> in the middle or later this week. But the repeat deluges aren't expected to solve the state's ongoing problems with drought. "The moisture that we're getting now is a big help, but we need more — a lot more — to really put a major dent in the drought," Richard Heim, a meteorologist with the National Centers for Environmental Information and one of the authors of the <a href="https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">U.S. Drought Monitor</a>, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-12-30/atmospheric-rivers-end-california-drought-year-with-storms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the LA Times</a>.

"I hope that is not the case - that is just the reality at this point," Nolan said at a press conference on Friday.Nolan said he canceled vacations for workers. He also said the response to the storm is the largest he's seen, <a href="https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/connecticut-power-companies-preparing-for-henris-impact/2565476/">WVIT</a> reported. The company has 300 line crews and 250 tree crews in the state, with another 620 crews expected to arrive in Connecticut before the storm hits on Sunday. The Inquirer reported that customers and regulators criticized Eversource after 180,000 people were left without power last August as a result of Tropical Storm Isaias. Eversource was ordered to improve their storm response and increase crews needed to restore power by Connecticut's Public Utilities Regulatory Authority in April, the Inquirer reported. PSEG Long Island also warned customers may face outages. "Given the potential intensity of the storm, some outages may last up to seven to 10 days. The eastern end of Long Island is expected to experience the most severe <keyword id="11911086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="weather" source="Orion">weather</keyword> and impact," the company said in a <a href="https://www.psegliny.com/newsroom/2021/082021-henri">press release.</a>PSEG said they are getting more than 1,200 utility personnel to work alongside their own personnel to address the storm. "We continue to monitor the track of Tropical Storm Henri," Michael Sullivan, senior director of Transmission &amp; Distribution at PSEG Long Island said. "As the storm makes its way up the coast, employees are preparing for the possibility of high winds that can cause flying debris, and bring down trees and power lines. We encourage our customers to do the same at their homes and businesses." Henri's sustained wind speeds are around 70 mph. As Henri gains speed, power companies warn those living in its path could face several days of power outages

It has been edited for length and clarity.The funny thing is, I was terrified of storms as a kid.Eventually, that fear turned into interest, that interest turned into passion, and I was fortunate enough to turn that passion into a career.<h2>In June 2010 a small <keyword id="12714503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tornado" source="Orion">tornado</keyword> hit Marysville, Ohio, where I grew up</h2>Seeing what <keyword id="12019615" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="extreme-weather" source="Orion">extreme weather</keyword> could do ignited something in me and I knew that I wanted to start storm chasing.I started by taking pictures of lightning and took a course to learn the basics of "spotting" — the process of watching for the approach of severe weather, monitoring its development, and relaying the findings to local authorities.They teach you what to look for — wall clouds, shelf clouds; what it looks like when a tornado is coming. I learned that there was a way to predict these things, and that they are not quite as scary as I made them out to be.The destruction they leave behind can be scary, but I think it is important to document it.In 2013 I signed on with a broker, Live Storms Media. They market my videos to news outlets and take a 40% cut of the profit. As time went on, I would make a few more sales each year, but nothing significant.<h2>In early 2018 I was juggling working at a warehouse with storm chasing</h2>I felt like I had lost my way by getting sucked into something sustainable, convenient, and boring. I reevaluated and decided to combine my minimalistic lifestyle with the career I wanted to pursue.It was a rough journey, but I learned a lot about what did and didn't work. When I'm shooting, I try to put myself in the editor's seat and think about what I would want to see in the videos I capture.<div type="image" title="Two tornados rage over a green field with two parked cars in the left foreground" height="2910" width="5340" msid="92393797" hostid="261" sizebytes="3460202"></div>I try to tell a story, whether that be an audacious rescue, a community coming together after a disaster, or a dramatic video that nobody else has captured.At some point, instead of me reaching out to other people, opportunities started coming to me. I recently got a gig on a documentary from an offer like that.<h2>The bigger the following you get, the more traction you have, and it has a snowball effect</h2>With my broker selling my documentary work and prints of my photos — and selling my videos to news outlets — I have been able to make storm chasing my full-time job.The day-in, day-out of the job can be hectic. I can predict where I think there is going to be severe weather a few days before it hits. I look at computer models for troughs — dips in the jet stream, which bring arctic air down from Canada and pull up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.I hone in on where I think those two are going to meet, a location where the best parameters for forming tornadoes are.On the day of a chase, I use real-time data and surface observations to adjust my target area. If there are multiple storms forming, I have to decide which one is going to produce tornadoes, big hail, or any kind of structure that I want to get pictures of.<h2>As I'm getting ready, I'll look ahead for escape routes</h2>Tornadoes can make sudden movements and smaller satellite tornadoes can touch down ahead of the main one. When you're getting close, you need to have your eye to the sky. It's the same with hurricanes. It's a lot of calculated risk — the last thing you want to do is become part of the problem and take emergency resources from others.Then, once you do start shooting, you have to get your video up quickly. Social-media videos from other <keyword id="14264272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="storm-chasers" source="Orion">storm chasers</keyword> might undercut yours; the business can be cutthroat. It's not uncommon for me to be editing a video while still shooting footage. I have a constant stream of videos pumping out. <h2>I have been in some hairy situations</h2>The worst was <keyword id="11911087" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hurricane" source="Orion">Hurricane</keyword> Harvey in Rockport, Texas, in 2017. The hurricane was nearly stationary and produced 130-mile-per-hour winds for over an hour.Our hotel could not take it, and the wind ripped off the third-floor wall, the fourth-floor wall, and part of the second-floor wall. At one point you could lean on the wall and feel the hotel swaying.It was moving so much that the water in the toilet bowl sloshed back and forth. When the eye of the hurricane passed over us, it was the most beautiful and terrifying thing I have ever seen.We walked outside and when we looked up, we could see the stars, the Milky Way, and the "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-michael-what-it-was-like-to-fly-2018-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">stadium effect</a>," with lightning illuminating the wall of clouds around the eye of the storm.I have seen the effects of the climate crisis firsthand. From 1992 until 2018, not a single category-five hurricane made landfall. Category five is the highest level of intensity, with sustained wind speeds over 157 miles per hour.<div type="image" title="Large Tornado with greenery and trees in the foreground" height="2736" width="4104" msid="92393800" hostid="261" sizebytes="498876"></div>From 2018 to 2021, we had back-to-back category-five hurricanes make landfall, one of which indirectly impacted the US and another that hit the Bahamas. On top of that, we've had multiple category-four hurricanes make landfall, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/hurricane-laura-damage-photos-lousiana-texas-2020-8">Laura</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/hurricane-ida-photos-videos-show-damage-2021-8">Ida</a>, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/hurricane-maria-recovery-photos-years-later-2019-8">Maria</a>.The counterargument is that these things come in cycles — but these cycles seem to be speeding up.<h2>A lot of people think that storm chasing is disaster chasing, especially when it comes to profit margins</h2>High-impact events do drive the market, but I don't ever like to see damage, to see people lose everything. I feel guilty when I get to go back home and sleep in my own bed, but people need to be aware of extreme weather, especially if it is increasing.I think that showing the power of these storms brings awareness, so people may hopefully take the next extreme-weather event more seriously.I have been storm chasing for over a decade now. The videos never do it justice, no matter how hard you try. The storm itself is only a small part of what is going on: When you can see the whole sky spinning and rotating, it's an otherworldly experience.

One veterinarian told the LSU AgCenter that a cattle producer lost 20 cows.
