Immediate steps like cracking down on stubble burning are crucial, but a more comprehensive overhaul is necessary. A large-scale shift to renewable energy, electric vehicles, and public transport is essential. Additionally, strengthening air quality regulations and public health infrastructure is imperative. The Lancet report serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to prioritise air quality and climate action. The health and well-being of millions of Indians depend on it.

Air pollution killed 16 lakh Indians in 2021, concerning Lancet study shows

Warning that health is at the mercy of fossil fuels, from 2000-2004 to 2017-2021 heat-related deaths increased by 55 per cent in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, the 2022 <keyword id="10370303" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lancet-countdown" source="Orion">Lancet Countdown</keyword> report said on Wednesday. Improvements in air quality will help to prevent deaths. In 2020, over 330,000 people died in India due to exposure to particulate matter from <keyword id="560717" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fossil-fuel" source="Orion">fossil fuel</keyword> combustion. In the run-up to the UN Climate Conference in Egypt (COP27), the new findings presented in the seventh annual global report of the Lancet Countdown on Health and <keyword id="6361617" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">Climate Change</keyword> reveals that governments and companies continue to follow strategies that increasingly threaten the health and survival of all people alive today, and of future generations. The report says in India, 45 per cent of urban centres are classified as moderately green or above. Urban redesign that puts health first can provide increased greenspace that reduces urban heat, improve air quality, and benefit physical and mental health. However, the Indian media coverage of health and climate change increased by 27 per cent between 2020 and 2021. The report says climate change is amplifying the health impacts of multiple crises in India. The duration of the growth season for maize has decreased by two per cent, compared to a 1981-2010 baseline, while rice and winter wheat have each decreased by one per cent. From 2012-2021, infants under one year old experienced an average of 72 million more person-days of heatwaves per year, compared to 1985-2005. For the same period, adults over 65 experienced 301 million more person-days. This means that, on average, from 2012-2021, each infant experienced an additional 0.9 heatwave days per year, while adults over 65 experienced an additional 3.7 per person, compared to 1986-2021. In 2021, Indians lost 167.2 billion potential labour hours due to heat exposure with income losses equivalent to about 5.4 per cent of the national GDP. From 1951-1960 to 2012-2021, the number of months suitable for dengue transmission by Aedes aegypti rose by 1.69 per cent, reaching 5.6 months each year. Governments and companies continue to prioritise fossil fuels to the detriment of people's health. In 2019, India had a net negative carbon price, indicating that the government was effectively subsidising fossil fuels. India allocated a net $34 billion to this in 2019 alone, equivalent to 37.5 per cent of the country's national health spending that year.a- Biomass accounted for 61 per cent of household energy in 2019, while fossil fuels accounted for another 20 per cent. With this high reliance on dirty fuels, average household concentrations of particulate matter exceeded the WHO recommendation by 27-fold nationally and 35-fold in rural homes. Globally, the fossil fuels continue to be prioritised over clean energy solutions by governments and companies to the detriment of health. The vast majority of countries analysed still collectively allocate hundreds of billions of US dollars to subsidising fossil fuels — this often amounts to sums comparable or even greater than the amount set aside in their total health budgets. The current strategies of fossil fuel giants threaten a liveable future and would lead to emissions exceeding international climate targets to minimise global warming. As countries devise responses to these crises, a renewed dependence on fossil fuels could lock in a fatally warmer future. However, a health-centred response can still deliver a thriving future if immediate action is taken. Accelerating the transition to clean energy and energy efficiency will help prevent further increases in climate change-related death and disease and deliver rapid health benefits through improved energy access and security, cleaner air, healthier diets and lifestyles, and more liveable cities, adds the report. "Our report this year reveals we are at a critical juncture. We see how climate change is driving severe health impacts all around the world, while the persistent global fossil fuel dependence compounds these health harms amidst multiple global crises, keeping households vulnerable to volatile fossil fuel markets, exposed to energy poverty, and dangerous levels of air pollution," says Marina Romanello, Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown at the University College London. The seventh Lancet Countdown report represents the work of 99 experts from 51 institutions, including the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and is led by University College London. Climate experts are underwhelmed by the world's latest attempt to prevent catastrophe: 'Bare minimum'

NASA's Lucy spacecraft captured the image of Earth at a distance of 620,000 km. The upper left of the image includes a view of Hadar, Ethiopia, home to the 3.2 million-year-old human ancestor fossil for which the spacecraft was named, the US space agency said in a statement. Lucy is the first mission to explore the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, an ancient population of asteroid "fossils" that orbit around the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter. To reach these distant asteroids, the Lucy spacecraft's trajectory includes three Earth gravity assists to boost it on its journey to these enigmatic asteroids. The image was taken with Lucy's Terminal Tracking Camera (T2CAM) system, a pair of identical cameras that are responsible for tracking the asteroids during Lucy's high-speed encounters. The T2CAM system was designed, built and tested by Malin Space Science Systems; Lockheed Martin Integrated the T2CAMs onto the Lucy spacecraft and operates them. Lucy spacecraft also captured an image of the Earth and the Moon from a distance of 1.4 million km. These Earth flybys provide Lucy with the speed required to reach the Trojan asteroids - small bodies that orbit the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter. On its 12-year journey, Lucy will fly by a record-breaking number of asteroids and survey their diversity, looking for clues to better understand the formation of the solar system. NASA's Lucy spacecraft captures images of Earth, Moon ahead of gravity assist

The report followed an exploratory mission to the island on October 17-21 led by the director of Unesco's regional office in Chile, Claudia Uribe, reports <keyword id="106387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xinhua-news-agency" source="Orion">Xinhua news agency</keyword>. The mission evaluated the need for emergency Unesco funds to help assess the scale of the damage to the <keyword id="76700" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-heritage-site" source="Orion">World Heritage Site</keyword>, and strengthen its comprehensive management and protection plan. "The idea is to focus this aid on diagnostic tasks to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the fire and determine the necessary actions to recover the park and its future protection," said Uribe. The figures were carved by the indigenous Rapa Nui people sometime between the years 1400 and 1650 and positioned to form a ring around the island, facing inland. The statues symbolised spiritual devotion for the Rapa Nui, embodying the spirit of a prominent ancestor. Each one was considered to be the person's living incarnation. Fire damages over 177 ancient monoliths on Chile's Easter Island: Unesco

A new US study involving an Indian-origin researcher has found that exposure to e-cigarette aerosols can cause heart arrhythmias in animal models -- both in the form of premature and skipped heartbeats. The study from <keyword id="236086" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="university-of-louisville" source="Orion">University of Louisville</keyword> researchers in the Christina Lee Brown Environment Institute, published in <keyword id="932868" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nature-communications" source="Orion">Nature Communications</keyword>, suggests exposure to specific chemicals within e-cigarette liquids (e-liquids) promotes arrhythmias and cardiac electrical dysfunction. "Our findings demonstrate that short-term exposure to e-cigarettes can destabilise heart rhythm through specific chemicals within e-liquids," said <keyword id="15354096" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="alex-carll" source="Orion">Alex Carll</keyword>, an assistant professor who led the study. These findings suggest that e-cigarette use involving certain flavours or solvent vehicles may disrupt the heart's electrical conduction and provoke arrhythmias. "The findings of this study are important because they provide fresh evidence that the use of e-cigarettes could interfere with normal heart rhythms -- something we did not know before," Bhatnagar said. "This is highly concerning given the rapid growth of e-cigarette use, particularly among young people." The researchers tested the cardiac impacts of inhaled e-cigarette aerosols solely from the main two ingredients in e-liquids (nicotine-free propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin) or from flavoured retail e-liquids containing nicotine. They found that for all e-cigarette aerosols, the animals' heart rate slowed during puff exposures and sped up afterwards as heart rate variability declined, indicating fight-or-flight stress responses. In addition, e-cigarette puffs from a menthol-flavoured e-liquid or from propylene glycol alone caused ventricular arrhythmias and other conduction irregularities in the heart. e-cigarettes can deliver aldehydes, particles and nicotine at levels comparable to combustible cigarettes. "Vaping might help smokers quit combustible cigarettes, but the appeal and addictiveness of e-cigarettes may encourage youth to vape amidst unknown long-term risks or take up smoking," said the researchers. E-cigarettes can cause cardiac troubles warns new research

That bacteria family, called Vibrio, lives in salty or brackish coastal waters, including in the US and Canada. The infection it causes, vibriosis, is usually contracted by eating raw or undercooked seafood or by exposing a wound to bacteria-infested seawater. Mild cases resolve in about three days, but Vibrio can also cause severe diseases, including gastroenteritis, life-threatening cholera, dangerous wound infections, and sepsis.One species of Vibrio bacteria, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flesh-eating-bacteria-spreading-due-to-warmer-oceans-2019-6">Vibrio vulnificus</a>, is referred to as flesh-eating because the bacteria can aggressively destroy body tissue. Those infections, though rare, often require intensive care or amputation. And they can be fatal, killing one in five infected people, usually within two days, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vibrio/faq.html">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>.The reasons Vibrio is becoming a greater threat are that sea surface temperatures are rising and seawater is getting saltier. That's one of many alarming findings from the medical journal The Lancet's sixth annual report on health and <keyword id="11896311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change" source="Orion">climate change</keyword>. According to the report, the amount of habitable coastline for Vibrio bacteria in certain latitudes of the northern hemisphere has expanded from 7% in the 1980s to 10.9% in 2020.<h2>Most Vibrio infections happen during the summer</h2>Every year in the US, an estimated 80,000 people are sickened by Vibrio and 100 die from their infections. Because Vibrio bacteria thrives in warm water, 80% of those infections are contracted between May and October, according to the CDC.The bacteria isn't just a threat to people: In April, after hundreds of dead fish washed up on shore in New Jersey, the culprit turned out to be a species of Vibrio bacteria, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/environment-new-jersey-7a735a9fc8bdec3912433a583a072bb7">according to the Associated Press</a>. "It is suspected that if there are wider temperature swings during the fall and spring, then this could worsen the impact of these mortality events," the state's <a href="https://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/news/2021/menhaden_update2_faqs.htm">Department of Environmental Protection</a> said.<div type="image" title="Vibrio vulnificus" height="997" width="1330" msid="87172896" hostid="261"></div>While 100 human deaths per year is a low toll from a public-health perspective, rising sea temperatures are poised to make Vibrio - and, most likely, the infections and deaths it causes - more widespread.Specifically,the amount of habitable coastline for Vibrio bacteria rose from 1.2% to 5.1% in the Atlantic Northeast and from 1.2% to 5.1% in the Pacific Northwest between the 1980s and 2020, the Lancet report found.
