A statement issued by Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) chief <keyword id="21195497" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lalit-bhasin" source="keywords">Lalit Bhasin</keyword> on Thursday said it was "unfortunate" that recently "very senior bar members", while appearing in the courts, had "attacked the integrity and competence" of <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> judges "This is an alarming and pernicious attempt to tarnish the image of the judiciary of our country, which has always stood for commitment to the rule of law. <keyword id="21195498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="our-supreme-court" source="keywords">Our Supreme Court</keyword> has repeatedly held that however high one may be, one is not above the law," it said. The statement added, "Our society strongly believes that law should be allowed to have its normal course, regardless of the status of the individuals in respect of whom there are ongoing investigations. It is to be left to the courts to decide on the innocence or otherwise of the persons." SILF, a collective body of the leading corporate law firms, is the country's only representative body for law firms.

Blinken made these comments during a community outreach programme with the Indian-Americans organised by the Biden campaign on the occasion of India's Independence Day on August 15. He alleged that US President Donald Trump has helped China advance key strategic goals by weakening American alliances, leaving a vacuum in the world for China to fill, and abandoning American values and giving Beijing a green light to trample on democracy in Hong Kong. "We have a common challenge which is to deal with an increasingly assertive China across the board, including its aggression toward India at the Line of Actual Control, but also using its economic might to coerce others and ... to its advantage, ignoring international rules to advance its own interests, asserting unfounded maritime and territorial claims that threaten a freedom of navigation in some of the most important seas in the world," Blinken told the Indian-Americans during the virtual panel discussion on "US-India Relations and Indian Americans in Joe Biden Administration." India and China are engaged in a bitter stand-off on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh since May. Blinken, who then was the top foreign policy advisor to former vice president Biden, had also referred to the Chinese actions in Hong Kong as repression of the rights of its own people and democracy in the former British colony. "We have to sort of take a step back and start by putting ourselves in a position of strength from which to engage China so that the relationship moves forward more on our terms, not theirs," Blinken had said. "India has to be a key partner in that effort," Blinken then said. If Blinken is tapped by President-elect Biden and confirmed by <keyword id="9555680" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-senate-foreign-relations-committee">the Senate Foreign Relations Committee</keyword>, he would replace Mike Pompeo as the next Secretary of State. "Unfortunately, right now by virtually every key metric. China's strategic position is stronger and ours is weaker as a result of President Trump's failed leadership," he said. More importantly, he alleged that Trump had undermined US democracy. "In many ways, as we think about dealing with the challenges that China poses, it's almost less about their strength and more about some of our self-inflicted weaknesses," he said. "Put another way, this is really about us in the first instance, the competitiveness of our own economy and workers. The strength of our own democracy and political system, the vibrancy of our own alliances and partnerships. The two countries have also sparred over trade issues, a new national security law in Hong Kong, restrictions on American journalists, treatment of Uyghurs Muslims and security measures in Tibet. Responding to a question from Richard Verma, the former US Ambassador to India, who was moderating the panel discussion, Blinken said that Biden as President would be investing "in ourselves renewing our democracy, working with our close partners like India, asserting our values, and so engaging China from a position of strength." "During the Obama-Biden administration, we worked very hard to establish India as a key contributing member of the Indo-Pacific strategy. And that includes India's role in working with like minded partners to strengthen and uphold a rules-based order in the Indo Pacific, in which no country, including China can threaten its neighbours with impunity," Blinken said. "That role needs to extend even beyond the region as vast as it is to the world at large. In a Biden administration we would be an advocate for India to play a leading role in international institutions and that includes helping India get a seat on a reformed United Nations Security Council," he said. "We would work together to strengthen India's defence, and also add its capabilities as a counterterrorism partner," he added. A Biden administration will also have no tolerance for terrorism in South Asia, he said in response to another question. "On the question of terrorism, specifically, we have no tolerance for terrorism, in South Asia or anywhere else: cross border or otherwise," he said. Asserting that Biden is a champion of the US-India relations, Blinken had said that the former vice president had a vision for the US-India relations. Referring to a 2006 statement by Biden that by 2020, US and India should be closest friends, Blinken said that that has not happened yet, but Biden will make it a reality. US calls on India to be a key partner in countering China's 'increasing assertiveness'

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Cigarette maker Godfrey Phillips on Tuesday denied reports that its promoter KK Modi group was planning to sale its stake in the company evoking a strong rebuttal from Lalit Modi, who called the company "blatant lairs".
 In a regulatory filing, Godfrey Phillips clarified that it is neither engaged nor privy to any such discussions on "rumoured potential transaction by its promoters".
 "The company has also received a clarification from its significant promoter that there has been no decision to put its assets on sale," it said.
 Reacting to the company's denial, Modi, who is abroad, tweeted, "All I can say is they are blatant liars."
 Sharing a letter he had written to co-trustees of KK Modi Family trust ahead of a meeting of the board of trustees on November 30, 2019, in which he proposed selling of various assets including family-controlled businesses, Modi termed clarification by Godfrey Phillips as "a complete eye wash".
 "So, I am forced to respond with documents. All media knows I have always disclosed clearly every time. As has been the case in the past 13 years," he said.
 In a series of tweets, Modi further said in the meeting of the trustees, "We agreed to unanimously go forward. Which was the only item on Agenda.
 "We did not reach unanimous decision. So, as per trust deed sale was triggered. I was asked to give them 30 days time to make me a proposal. I said sale goes on and if u (sic) convince me. Then we can meet to cancel."
 He had on Monday evening tweeted, "Just to set the record straight. Yes, all assets of the #kkmodi group are going on sale. I mean all. The other 3 trustees wanted to continue running the business but I felt post my father passing away -- the value will deplete. I voted for sale."
 He had said all companies, land, investments in any other companies -- and assets listed of Modi Enterprises, including chemicals business Indofil Industries, would be on sale except for Colorbar, Ego, Beacon Travels and education businesses, which will be retained to be run by other family members, Samir, Bina and Charu.
 "The investment banker will have mandate to sell to highest bidder. The banker will be assisted by the group ceo #rkmalhotra who will apprise the trustees headed by #Binamodi with Charu / Samir and me. process 4 sale laid strictly in the trust guidelines and no deviation allowed," he had tweeted.
 Lalit Modi, who is the son of late industrialist KK Modi, the family patriarch, had further said he did not approve of Bina Modi running the business empire "as she is not qualified to run such large corporation and will dilute our value".
 "Thus, the sale of all companies, properties etc, has been approved at the first trust meeting on 30/11/2019," he stated.

Godfrey Philips denies promoters selling stake, Lalit Modi slams company as 'blatant lairs'

New Delhi, Jan 24 () The Income-Tax Department's searches on the Bharat Hotels group, that runs the chain of Lalit Hotels, has led to the detection of "undisclosed" foreign assets of more than Rs 1,000 crore and huge black money that the business house has "stashed" abroad, the CBDT said on Friday.
 While the policy-making body of the department did not take any names in the statement issued after the raids, official sources confirmed it to be the Bharat Hotels Group that functions under its CMD Jyotsna Suri.
 "The investigation has successfully lifted the veil, leading to detection of undisclosed foreign assets of more than Rs 1,000 crore, apart from domestic tax evasion of more than Rs 35 crore which may lead to consequences under the Black Money Act, 2015, as also, action under the I-T Act respectively," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said.
 "Foreign assets include investment in a hotel in UK, immovable properties in UK and UAE and deposits with foreign banks," it said.
 The CBDT said the group is a "leading member of the hospitality industry, running a hotel abroad and a chain of luxury hotels under a prominent brand name situated at various locations in India".
 "The search operation has so far resulted in seizure of unaccounted assets valued at Rs 24.93 crore that includes Rs. 71.5 lakh in cash, jewellery worth Rs 23 crore and expensive watches valued at Rs 1.2 crore," the statement said.
 The department had launched raids at 13 premises of the group, Suri and others on January 19 in and around Delhi.
 The Bharat Hotels group owns the chain of Lalit hotels in the country. It runs over a dozen such luxury facilities at present.

A district court slapped <keyword id="6356684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="patanjali">Patanjali</keyword> with a fine of Rs 11 lakh for misleading advertisements, misbranding and misrepresentation of its products. 
 Haridwar's additional district magistrate <keyword id="2489561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lalit-Narain-Mishra">Lalit Narain Mishra</keyword> stated Patanjali is guilty of releasing misleading advertisements by selling certain products with its labels although they were being manufactured by some other firm. 
 
Patanjali was fined under Section 52 (misbranding) and Section 53 (misleading advertisement) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 as well as Section 23.1 (5) of Food Safety and Standard (Packaging and Labelling Regulations, 2011) Act. 
 
Patanjali has to pay the fine within a month and the court also told the district food safety department to take appropriate action if there is no improvement in the products in future. 
 
A case was filed against Patanjali in November 2012 after samples of products, including honey, salt, mustard oil, jam and besan (gram flour) picked up for sampling on August 16, 2012, allegedly failed quality tests. 
 
The tests were conducted at Uttarakhand's only FSSAI-certified drugs and food testing lab located at Rudrapur. The case had been ongoing ever since. The order regarding the fine imposed on the company was given by the court on December 1, but became public a day ago.

Opposition Congress party hit out at Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> over his "silence" on the <keyword id="2899690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lalit-Modi-row">Lalit Modi row</keyword> and demanded an answer saying he should come clean on the case. 
 The Congress party said the Prime Minister should come out of his 'meditation' to answer if External Affairs Minister <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje helped scam-tainted former IPL chief <keyword id="3257" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lalit-Modi">Lalit Modi</keyword> with his consent. 
 
The party also demanded resignation of Swaraj and Raje and claimed that BJP veteran leader LK Advani too had expressed no confidence in the leadership of the Prime Minister. 
 
"Advaniji, has obviously said he is not sure about the leadership. He has expressed no confidence in the leadership of the Prime Minister. The ball is in the court of the Prime Minister," said Congress party spokesperson Tom Vadakkan. 
 
He was referring to Advani's remarks on the possibility of a repeat of Emergency that he "doesn't have faith in today's political leadership due to its weaknesses". 
 
Vadakkan said that the Prime Minister must answer whether the Chief Minister acted the way she did with his consent. 
“Whether the External Affairs Minister did what she did with his consent? Are there other people involved, the Prime Minister must come clean. He must come out of his political Vipassana,” he said 
 
Swaraj has been at the centre of the controversy for helping Lalit Modi in getting British travel documents, while Raje is accused of pushing for his immigration plea. 
 
Reportedly, Raje's son has business associations with Lalit Modi and Congress demanded an investigation in the same matter. 
"Chhota (Lalit) Modi used to run Rajasthan. This is a reality. If Chhota Modi was running Rajasthan and now the Bada (Narendra) Modi is at the Centre, it is time that the nation should know what are the realities today," he added.

The party said that since the ‘senior leadership’ in the Modi government was "in cahoots" with the former IPL chief Lalit Modi, an independent inquiry was required to reveal it’s dark underbelly. 
 "There has been nexus of the senior leadership of the government (with former <keyword id="1793640" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL-boss-Lalit-Modi">IPL boss Lalit Modi</keyword>) who have been in cahoots in cricket management or mismanagement. An independent inquiry by a Supreme Court-monitored SIT is necessary," Congress spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters. 
 
Sharma demanded an exhaustive probe into the case, and not limiting it to the UK travel documents. 
 
Alleging "Lalit Modi is personally known to the highest in the BJP", he said that Modi was also connected to the Gujarat Cricket Association when he was the state's Chief Minister. 
 
"The ruling party is involved. Those in the government cannot be trusted. It has to be done by a Supreme Court-monitored Special Investigation Team", he said. 
 
Sharma also said Modi should speak up on a case like this as "what has happened is scandalous". 
 
He also criticized Home Minister Rajnath Singh considering Swaraj a "humanitarian".
