The announcement made by the <keyword id="6359327" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Home-Ministry">Home Ministry</keyword> says, “From June 30, the Agatti and Minicoy islands in <keyword id="64287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lakshadweep">Lakshadweep</keyword> will offer direct entry into or exit from India for all classes of foreign passengers.” 
 
According to the order signed by Joint secretary GK Dwivedi, the move will attract more foreign luxury cruises. 
 
An Economic Times report revealed that the enviable location of the islands is the reason why the ministry has announced India’s smallest ICP in the twin islands which are separated by approximately 200 kilo meters. The tiny islands fall in route to more than two dozen foreign cruises heading towards India through Arabian Sea. 
 Agatti, the smaller among the two islands, has covered the area of just 3.84 sq km while Minicoy, which is just 130 km from the northernmost island of <keyword id="6354908" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maldives">Maldives</keyword>, is slightly bigger with an area of 4.80 sq km. The islands lie on one of the busiest shipping routes. 
 
The current situation does not allows international cruises to approach the base, which have to travel 450 km extra to Kochi in the Indian mainland for immigration and custom clearance if it wishes to dock at Agatti. If these vessels have to sail through any foreign country after visiting Lakshadweep, then again they have to go back to Kochi if the vessel has to go back to any foreign country. 
 
Therefore, international cruises have to spend two-three more days travelling to and from Kochi at a higher cost. Unsurprisingly, these cruises have increasingly started given the exotic Lakshadweep islands a miss in their itineraries. 
 
"Every year, 15-20 foreign luxury cruises are crossing through the Lakshadweep territorial waters, and facilitation of at least 50 % of these vessels to visit Lakshadweep islands, will enable over 5,000 foreign tourists to visit Lakshadweep which will be almost equal to the total number of tourists (both domestic and foreign) who visited Lakshadweep during the last tourist season (2013-2014)," says the Lakshadweep Tourism Policy-2014.

Deemed as a union territory of India, this is the smallest electorate in the country spread over 32 square kilometers. The electoral rolls of Lakshadweep show us a list of 49,922 voters made of 25,433 males and 24,489 females. There are no registered third gender electors here. In 2014 general elections, Mohammed Faizal of the P. P. Nationalist Congress Party won from this constituency. Earlier in 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the union territory elected INC’s candidate from this single Parliamentary seat. In 2004 Parliamentary elections, Janata Dal (United) candidate won from this seat. For a long period of about ten Lok Sabha terms from 1967 to 1999, P M Sayeed of the INR held this seat. When he was elected for the 4th Lok Sabha, he was the youngest member in the Parliament. Lakshadweep is a single constituency union territory and hence can give only one seat to the Parliament. This is an unreserved seat. Enjoying a very high literacy rate of 92.28%, Lakshadweep is dominated by scheduled tribes who make up 94.8% of the total population. New Delhi, Apr 21 () State-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) has transported 8,250 tonnes of PDS foodgrains to Andaman &amp; Nicobar (A&amp;N) and Lakshadweep, via sea route, during the lockdown period, the Food Ministry said on Tuesday. During the 27 days of lockdown, 1,750 tonnes of foodgrains have been moved to Lakshadweep from Mangalore port which is almost thrice the normal monthly average of 600 tonnes, it said in a statement. The remaining 6,500 tonnes of foodgrains have been moved from Kakinada Port to Port Blair, and different public distribution centres situated at different islands of A&amp;N, which is more than double the normal monthly average of 3,000 tonnes, it added. FCI transported foodgrains in two ship vessels to A&amp;N, and in seven small vessels to Lakshadweep Islands since the imposition of lockdown on March 24 to combat the coronavirus pandemic, it said. A&amp;N as well as Lakshadweep have very unique logistical challenges as these areas cannot be accessed by road/rail from mainland, and sea route is the only option for movement of foodgrains, it said. FCI is the central government's nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains for supply through Public Distribution System (PDS). "Due to its difficult topography and limited access, it takes herculean efforts to maintain the logistical operations ensuring uninterrupted supply of grains under PDS to the islands. "Considering the high dependence on PDS in these islands, it is of utmost importance to ensure that foodgrains reach every island well in time," the ministry said. According to the statement, about 1,100 tonnes of foodgrains have already been distributed via PDS shops in Lakshadweep, while 5,500 tonnes have been distributed in A&amp;N during the lockdown. The foodgrains are being distributed under National Food Security Act (NFSA) and the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY). While Lakshadweep has already lifted its quota of three months allocation under PMGKAY, A&amp;N has lifted a quota of more than two months under the same scheme. Under PMGKAY, the government is distributing 5 kg of foodgrains per PDS beneficiary and 1 kg pulses per household for three months for free to ensure no poor goes hungry during the lockdown. This is over and above the normal quota of 5 kg per person at a subsidised rate under NFSA. In addition to moving stocks to its main depot at Port Blair, the FCI ensures supply of foodgrains for PDS throughout A&amp;N by moving foodgrains directly to 12 principal distribution centres through vessel movement from Kakinada Port, Andhra Pradesh. The PDS requirement of Lakshadweep Islands is met from 2,500 MT FCI godown at Androth. The foodgrains are moved to FCI Androth through vessels from Mangalore Port, Karnataka, and the union territory's administration undertakes further movement to the smaller islands from Androth. It’s a <a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">historical first</a> with Cyclone Kyarr is weakening but moving closer to India’s coastline while Cyclone Maha is gaining momentum but expected to shift westward. The Indian Meteorological Department (<a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">IMD</a>) has been collecting data on cyclones in India’s oceans for the past 125 years, and they have no record of any such instance happening in the past. <div type="image" title="maha2_edited" msid="71834618" hostid="261"></div>

 The only time that India has been subjected to simultaneous cyclones in the same water body was back in December 1972, according to <a href="https://chennairains.com/cyclone-kyarr-makes-way-maha/">COMK</a> — a website that tracks weather in Chennai. Even then, it was the Bay of Bengal that witnessed one cyclone heading towards the coast of Tamil Nadu while another approached over the South China Sea. Some experts are predicting that the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujiwhara_effect">Fujiwhara effect</a> might take place, which is when the vortices of two adjacent cyclones start to orbit each other. It’s even possible that the vortices may merge. Fishermen advised to steer clear The Indian Meteorological Department (<a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">IMD</a>) predicts heavy rainfall over Lakshadweep, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It also expects the sea conditions in the Arabian Sea to remain anywhere between rough to high. Cyclone Kyarr, the most severe cyclone that the Arabian Sea has seen in the past 12 years, has nearly come and gone. But Cyclone Maha has put areas on high alert since yesterday. Fishing operations in the Lakshadweep area have been suspended and fishermen have been advised to stay away from east central Arabian Sea till November 4. According to IMD’s alert, thatched houses are in danger of having their rooftops blown off, power lines may get damaged, coastal crops might suffer and there’s a probability that roads might be flooded.

<keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword>, As many as 86 per cent of Internet users enjoy OTT (Over The Top) audio and video services, more than half of them from the hinterlands, making it the top use-case for Internet in the country, according to an industry report. The rise of digital entertainment services have been bolstered by the rise of smart TV, smart speakers, firesticks, chromecasts, growing at 58 per cent from 2021 to 2023 as more people are accessing video content over Internet-only devices (208 million) than conventional linear TV (181 million), said a report by the <keyword id="20749434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-and-mobile-association" source="keywords">Internet and Mobile Association</keyword> and the marketing data and analytics company <keyword id="20200137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kantar" source="keywords">Kantar</keyword>. The report also finds that rural users are driving all these use-cases, accounting for more than 50 percent of the user base. The report, based on the inputs from over 90,000 households across all the states and Union Territories, barring <keyword id="20039270" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lakshadweep" source="keywords">Lakshadweep</keyword>, was released at the ongoing India Digital Summit 2024. The second and third most popular use-cases of the Internet are communications with 621 million users, and social media with 575 million users. There were over 823 million active Internet users in the country as of 2023, meaning more than 55 per cent of people in the country have used the Internet last year, which is a modest 8 per cent growth over the previous year. At 442 million, rural users are in a majority, accounting for over 53 per cent of the total user base. From a gender perspective, the male-female ratio of Internet users rose from 71:29 in 2015 to 54:46 in 2023, which is almost at par with the overall sex ratio of the addressable population in the country, says the report. However, the report finds that net adoption growth rate has been decelerating with rural market, which has been driving Internet growth rates for the past many years, slowing down by 11 per cent in 2023 over 2022, pulling down the overall growth rate to 8 per cent. The report further said 57 per cent users prefer to access content in their local languages, with Tamil, Telegu, and <keyword id="19901815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malayalam" source="keywords">Malayalam</keyword> having the strongest language preference for content. States with the lowest Internet user base have the fastest growth rates now with Jharkhand (46 per cent penetration) and Bihar (37 per cent penetration) showing above average growth rates of 12 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively.
