Cole Haan's office-to-gym sneakers have the Zerogrand technology that made its dress shoes famous - here's how they stack up

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A man with type 2 diabetes put his disease into remission by following advice from a "digital twin" app.</li><li>The app personalizes nutrition and exercise tips, based on what he likes, and what works for him.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weight-loss-glp-1-drugs-ozempic-wegovy-mounjaro-effects-future-2023-12">Ozempic</a> isn't for everyone, and Devlin Donaldson says he is just one of those people.</p><p>After spending about 10 months on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-do-weight-loss-drugs-stop-working-ozempic-plateau-explained-2023-12">injectable drug</a>, the CEO said he had lost a little bit of weight — maybe five or 10 pounds — but it wasn't having a noticeable effect on his blood sugar, and he felt like giving up. (Research suggests <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9807016/">around 1 in 6 people</a> may not respond much to GLP1s.)</p><div type="image" title="devlin in 2018, before he started twin" height="1402" width="2100" msid="110470106" hostid="261" sizebytes="96636"></div><p>So he tried another approach.</p><p>Donaldson started:</p><ul><li>wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to observe how and when his blood sugar levels fluctuate</li><li>putting on a smartwatch that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/if-you-want-to-lose-weight-get-more-sleep-scientists-2023-3">tracks his sleep</a> and his movements</li><li>stepping on a digital scale regularly that measures weight and body composition, and</li><li>using a blood pressure cuff to keep track of his blood pressure.</li></ul><p>Then, with the help of a "twin" on his phone, he figured out that a few useful habits did move the needle on all those device readings.</p><p>He was one of the first members of <a target="_blank" href="https://businessinsider.com/man-with-diabetes-reversed-his-disease-using-digital-twin-2024-5">Twin Health, a new "digital twin" health program</a> geared toward putting diabetes in remission and also getting people <a target="_blank" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/twin-health-announces-digital-twin-ai-for-sustainable-weight-loss-with-glp-1-elimination-302152189.html">off GLP-1 drugs</a> while maintaining their weight loss. Over time, with encouragement and feedback from the twin on his phone, Donaldson developed his own very personal health strategy that helped him <a target="_blank" href="https://businessinsider.com/weight-loss-tips-man-lost-40-pounds-10-inches-walking-nutrients-order-2024-5">lose over 40 pounds</a>, including 10 inches around his waistline.</p><p>He also reversed his diabetes, putting his disease in remission, and making it possible to quit many of his medications. His hemoglobin A1C levels, which are a key measure of how well-controlled a person's blood sugar is, went from 10.1% to 6.1%. An A1C above 6.5% is considered diabetic.</p><p>"There's all kinds of things I know now I can do to stop that rise in glucose," he told Business Insider.</p><p>Here are two of his quick tips:</p><h2 id="dd274e08-9c0d-44a0-9ef4-d766708afbcb"><strong>1: When he sees his blood sugar levels going up, he gets up for a walk</strong></h2><div type="image" title="man walking outside" height="1202" width="1801" msid="110470107" hostid="261" sizebytes="276942"></div><p id="dd274e08-9c0d-44a0-9ef4-d766708afbcb">When Donaldson's "twin" suggested he start getting in around 10,000 steps a day, he was taken aback.</p><p>"You're crazy. That is not going to happen," he remembers thinking.</p><p>The first walk he took felt impossible. He told his wife he needed to quit and go home after about 3,000 steps.</p><p>But, over time, the feedback from his app encouraged him along.</p><p>He could graphically observe how movement improved his blood sugar. It was his own little diabetes masterclass sitting in his pocket; a window into seeing how his muscles really do take up more glucose to fuel him onward during his workouts.</p><div type="image" title="twin health app screenshot showing walking impacting blood sugar" height="1545" width="1083" msid="110470108" hostid="261" sizebytes="47288"></div><p>Now, when he sees his blood sugar going up, he laces up.</p><p>During the pandemic, he was getting up to 15,000 steps in per day as his schedule was very flexible, with far fewer in-person meetings. Now, he tends to log more like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walking-10000-steps-for-health-not-science-based-in-marketing-2021-7">8,000 steps a day</a>, he says — which experts agree is still more than enough walking to trigger some serious health benefits.</p><h2 id="31d6ef23-ad88-48a0-b002-dc706ff8e9fd"><strong>2: He also dilutes a little vinegar into his water glass</strong></h2><div type="image" title="apple cider vinegar" height="695" width="484" msid="110470109" hostid="261" sizebytes="19062"></div><p>Donaldson was no stranger to apple cider vinegar when he started the Twin program. He remembers how his grandmother used to sing its praises as a health boon.</p><p>But he'd never tried it himself. <em>Must be some sort of old wives' tale,</em> he thought.</p><p>Twin suggested he might want to try adding a little bit of ACV to his water glass throughout the day — just a tablespoon would do. There isn't a ton of research on this technique, but some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uchicagomedicine.org/forefront/health-and-wellness-articles/2018/august/debunking-the-health-benefits-of-apple-cider-vinegar">small studies</a> suggest that the vinegar does have a very mild effect on blood sugar control.</p><p>Donaldson sips his slowly throughout the day. He isn't a huge fan of the taste, but it's tolerable.</p><p>Apple cider vinegar isn't totally without risks, especially for people who drink it straight.</p><p>"It's very acidic," registered dietician Nicola Guess, who studies type 2 diabetes remission and treatment through diet interventions at Oxford University, told Business Insider.</p><p>Twin Health said it does not recommend ACV to people with acid reflux, dental problems, or "other medical conditions impacted by high-acidity foods."</p><div type="image" title="a slimmed down Donaldson surrounded by friends, wearing a suit " height="535" width="713" msid="110470110" hostid="261" sizebytes="23840"></div><p>These days, Donaldson doesn't go anywhere without his Twin. "But you wouldn't have known as much without it."</p>

After selling out immediately, this startup's wildly popular under-$200 men's dress shoes are finally back in stock - here's what the hype is all about

In 2015 Combatant Gentleman was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/combatant-gentleman-takes-wall-street-2015-1">the most shipped-to menswear package at Goldman Sachs</a><span>, according to co-founder <span>Vishaal Melwani.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The next frontier for the e-tailer? <a href="https://www.combatgent.com/toecap">Shoes.</a></span></span></p><p><span><span>Sticking with the company's theme, the shoes are a modern style with a cheap price: only<a href="https://www.combatgent.com/toecap"> $65-80 a pair</a>. </span></span></p><p><span><span>Styles offered include penny loafers, driving loafers, oxford-style lace-ups, double-monk straps, and Chelsea boots. Some shoes are so narrow you'll find yourself sizing up two full sizes, and others feel like they were sewn using your foot's exact dimensions as the pattern.</p><p>For a store that's mostly online, it can be a high-stakes guessing game. </p><p>To give you a better idea of what to expect before you buy, I ranked five best-selling shoes at Everlane to see what the pros and cons of each are. </p><p>If you want a simple rule of thumb you can't go wrong with, shop from the company's <a href="http://www.gopjn.com/t/TEFNS0VFQUVHR0pGTEFFREhLRE0?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.everlane.com%2Fcollections%2Fwomens-shoes%2Fthe-day-family" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Day Family collection</a>. Available in ten colors.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In the unlikely instance that a cocktail party includes the icebreaker "If you could only buy one pair of flats for the rest of your life, which pair would it be?" (maybe it's a very specific kind of event) I have my answer locked and loaded: The Day Glove. These shoes are the consummate flat, and they're wonderful from the minute you take them out of the box. They were also voted the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-flats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#1 best flats you can buy</a> in the Insider Picks buying guides.</p><p>The Day Glove ($115) requires zero break-in time, the premium leather is soft, supple, and molds to your foot for an increasingly customized fit over time, and the elongated upper negates both angry red lines and the feeling that you may slip out when taking a deep step. The perforations on the side are meant to keep air circulating through the shoes (for less stink and sweat) and they come in a wide range of beautiful colors.</p><p>Since getting them a few months ago, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everlane-day-glove-flats-review-2018-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I've averaged wearing them about three times every week</a>. It's inventive, comfortable even though heels categorically are not, and goes with virtually everything thanks to 11 great color options. On any given day, at least one of the Insider Picks teammates is probably wearing this heel. </p><p>The pull tab makes them easy to slip on, the elastic back means I can wear them all day without the threat of throbbing or blisters, and the cushiony insole adequately protects me from the constant slam of my feet against city pavement. Also, they mean it when they say the low 2-inch block heel is walkable - these work painlessly on my 40-block walk, and they don't slow me down.   </p><p>I have a 9 (true size) and a 9.5, and after the leather has stretched comfortably with use, I would recommend sticking true to size for these unless you are extremely uncomfortable. The top of the shoe will likely feel tight at points, but this has loosened over time. For at least the first handful of times you wear them, you won't want to rely on this pair for long walks or walking-heavy activities. For me, I broke my default rule and wore comfortable shoes in the morning and switched into these for the work day, breaking them in with short walks around the office.</p><p>The loafers run narrow and I agree with Everlane's suggestion that you should size up a half size. Even in the half size up, I still needed to jam and coax my feet into them for the first few wears. But, once inside, the shoes fit ideally. If you have plans to wear them with socks, though, I'd suggest going a whole size up - at 9.5, they're snug on me, though they have loosened (and will likely continue to) over time. If you go with a patent leather option, you should start by going up a full size since it won't stretch the same way as other leathers.</p><p>All in all, though, The Modern Loafer is a great shoe if you can pay the initial painful debt of breaking them in - which is why they still rank as #3. The 100% Italian leather is thick and sturdy (hence the breaking in) but soft with wear, and with 10 color options, you can opt for a classic or statement pair easily. Available in three colors.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>All in all, I absolutely love these shoes - probably as much if not more than any other pair on this list - but their break-in period and sizing make them a tough pair to work with initially, which is why I've ranked them #4.</p><p>Having said that, these shoes are <em>cool.</em> If you like elegant, edgy, or effortlessly self-assured, you will love the way these look on. </p><p>I've mentioned that the <a href="http://www.pjatr.com/t/TEFNS0VFQUVHR0pGTEFFREhLRE0?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.everlane.com%2Fproducts%2Fwomens-modern-loafer-black%3Fcollection%3Dwomens-shoes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Modern Loafers</a> require a break-in period, but these require a more intense one. While the loafer shape allows you to bend out of the shoes themselves intermittently, that's not the case for Oxfords that you're laced into, and which are made from a stiffer leather. There's nowhere for your foot to slip out and escape to in these, and, as a result, the friction is more intense. Do not try to break these in without socks on unless you are a masochist. But, with socks (and maybe some proactive band-aids applied) you should be fine, and they'll feel custom-made after eight or more wears. </p><p>I typically wear a 9, and Everlane suggests sizing up if you're in between sizes. I've tried both the 10 and 9.5, and the 9.5 is perfect. The narrow fit keeps them looking suave and elongated, and they're the kind of shoe that encourages you to take up space without apologizing for it. It has Everlane's go-to pull tab on the back for ease, a walkable 2-inch heel, and is made out of 100% Italian suede. Overall, these things are sleek.</p><p>The Editor heels are relatively comfortable - less than the Day Heel with its elastic back and more than other kitten heels I own - but the stiff back could give you blisters with extended wear. Everlane says the Editor heels run big and to size down if you're in between sizes, but I'm glad I stuck to my true size - even there I noticed some tightness in the narrow toe box, something that will hopefully loosen after many wears. If you followed Everlane's instructions for a smaller size, though, and you could fight through the break-in period, you'd probably wind up with the perfect fit one day. To me, though, it's just not worth the pain. </p><p>It's also worth noting that while these heels are pretty comfortable in my mind, you probably won't want to be in them all day. <p>And it's pretty awesome.</p>
<p>The new shoe takes a classic Oxford style brogue dress shoe and gussies it up with red accents in the stitching, laces, sole, and red suede inside the shoe.</p>
<p>It also put the iconic Johnnie Walker "striding man" in the form of a tattoo on the rear quarter, and "JW" in red stitching on the back of the shoe.</p>
<p>But by far the most unexpected part of the shoes is its heel, which houses a miniature bottle of Johnnie Walker Red Label Scotch Whiskey.&#xa0;</p>

The shoes are, on average, a pound lighter than a traditional dress shoe, and use something called a "Swiss insole" to reduce weight.</span></p><p><span>Since part of the comfort of running shoes is their flexibility, these shoes should be able to move better than your average dress shoe. This means the Wolf &amp; Shepherd shoes have a little more give, which can cause some unsightly wrinkles in the leather when worn, as evidenced by some of the product shots. The leather, according to the company, is sourced from the same tannery that Louis Vuitton uses.</span></p><p><span>Comfort doesn't come cheap, though. The shoes' <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> price <a href="http://www.wolfandshepherd.com/collections/all">starts at $325</a>, which is about equal to the cost of a well-made traditional dress shoe. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap990531.html">NASA/JPL-Caltech</a></span></p><p class="caption">A photo of Uranus taken by Voyager 2 in 1986 (edited to show its moon and rings).</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/uranus">Uranus</a> is one of the solar system's most mysterious planets.</strong></li><li><strong>Scientists had long believed that the "ice giant" world has clouds of hydrogen sulfide, a compound that smells bad to people, but they couldn't be certain.</strong></li><li><strong>New telescope observations confirm the planet is clouded by the chemical.</strong></li><li><strong>The discovery may help astronomers further unravel the twisted history of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/solar-system">solar system</a>'s formation.</strong></li></ul><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uranus-officially-weirdest-planet-magnetic-field-tilt-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uranus</a>, the seventh planet from the sun, has held a vital (and smelly) secret of the solar system for decades.</p><p>An international team of researchers reported on Monday that they've discovered evidence that Uranus holds one of the most unpleasant-smelling chemicals known to humankind.</p><p>"They found hydrogen sulfide, the odiferous gas that most people avoid, in Uranus's cloud tops," according to <a href="https://www.gemini.edu/node/21050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a press release</a> from Gemini Observatory, a high-power telescope atop a Hawaiian volcano.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/voyager-probes-mission-history-farthest-movie-2018-08">Voyager 2</a> was the only spacecraft ever to visit the chilly, blue-green "ice giant." The probe tried to see which chemicals were in Uranus' clouds during its 1986 flyby, but it couldn't tell scientists for certain.</p><p>Now, however, astronomers have used an instrument at the Gemini Observatory to "sniff" the planet's gases from Earth. Their discovery could help write the book on when and where the planets of the solar system formed - and if they ever switched places.</p><p>"This is evidence of a big shakeup early on in the solar system's formation," <a href="https://science.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Orton/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glenn Orton</a>, a co-author of the new study and a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told Business Insider. "There was definitely a migration taking place."</p><p>The journal Nature Astronomy published <a href="http://nature.com/articles/doi:10.1038/s41550-018-0432-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the findings</a> on Monday.</p><h2>Why it took so long to detect Uranus's stinky clouds</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://davemosher.com">Dave Mosher</a></span></p><p class="caption">The Gemini North telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, which is part of the Gemini Observatory project.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The reason most people avoid hydrogen sulfide is because the compound is a signature ingredient in the scent of rotten eggs - and <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/ajg1998522" target="_blank" rel="noopener">farts</a>.</p><p>Humans can smell hydrogen sulfide when it makes up as little as three out of every billion molecules in the air, the EPA <a href="https://cfpub.epa.gov/ncea/iris/iris_documents/documents/toxreviews/0061tr.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a>. At higher concentrations, such as near volcanic areas, it can be poisonous. Breathing a concentration of a few hundred parts per million can kill a person in about half an hour, according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/idlh/7783064.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centers for Disease Control</a>.</p><p>"If an unfortunate human were ever to descend through Uranus's clouds, they would be met with very unpleasant and odiferous conditions," <a href="https://www2.physics.ox.ac.uk/contacts/people/irwin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Patrick Irwin</a>, a physicist at the University of Oxford who led the new study, said in the press release. But he added that "suffocation and exposure" to Uranus' -200 degree Celsius temperatures "would take its toll long before the smell."</p><p>Researchers had long suspected that Uranus's atmosphere was laced with hydrogen sulfide, and in concentrations dozens of times higher than at Saturn or Jupiter.</p><p>They couldn't be certain, though, since Uranus orbits the sun from 1.85 billion miles away.</p><p>The vast distance, aside from making the planet distant and difficult to study, leads to blisteringly cold temperatures that freezes hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen-sulfide ice can form clouds, but the solid crystals are hard for chemical-analyzing instruments called spectrometers to study. (The method works far better with liquids and gases.)</p><p>Irwin and others suspected there were at least whiffs of hydrogen sulfide gas drifting above the clouds. And now, thanks to an extremely sensitive Gemini instrument that can see light invisible to humans, Irwin said scientists "have the fingerprint which caught the culprit."</p><h2>Why the discovery might 'shake up' ideas about the solar system's evolution</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://mobile.arc.nasa.gov/public/iexplore/missions/pages/yss/november.html">NASA</a></span></p><p class="caption">An artist's conception of the dust and gas surrounding a newly formed planetary system.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Astronomers like Irwin have an interest in hydrogen sulfide on Uranus that goes far beyond the gas' smell.</p><p>The discovery of hydrogen sulfide may help piece together the story of how the solar system formed and arranged itself some 4.6 billion years ago. Figuring out the exact makeup of distant planets could help determine where in the solar system they first formed - and how far they <a href="https://www.space.com/18705-how-was-uranus-formed.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">migrated away from the sun</a> afterward.</p><p>Like all planets, Uranus and Neptune formed from a giant disk of gas and dust that shrouded the sun some 4.6 billion years ago. The planets are mostly made of heavier elements, and didn't balloon with lightweight hydrogen and helium gases.</p><p>"Uranus and Neptune never had the time to grow into gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn," Imke de Pater, an astronomer at the University of California Berkeley who wasn't involved in the study, wrote in an accompanying <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41550-018-0457-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> in Nature Astronomy. "The composition of a celestial body is a fundamental parameter in determining its formation and evolutionary history."</p><p>The two planets failed to become gas giants (and instead became "ice giants") for two main reasons.</p><p>First, the solar system's early disk of dust and gas grew more diffuse farther out from the sun. With less material available, it took Uranus and Neptune longer to form.</p><p>Second, this slower formation gave the sun more time to blow hydrogen and helium out of the solar system with its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-auroras-solar-cycle-minimum-maximum-related-2017-12">stellar winds</a> - before Uranus and Neptune could grow massive enough to capture it with their gravity.</p><p>"Giant planets form really fast, in a few million years," <a href="http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~kwalsh/Research.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin Walsh</a>, who studies planet formation at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, <a href="https://www.space.com/18705-how-was-uranus-formed.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Space.com</a> in March. "That creates a time limit because the gas disk around the sun only lasts 4 to 5 million years."</p><p>Scientists agree on this much, but Orton said they have "too many theories" about the migration of Uranus and Neptune, which came next.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/voyager/pia00032.html">NASA/JPL-Caltech</a></span></p><p class="caption">A true-color photo of Uranus (left) and a false color image (right) taken at the turn of 1986 by NASA's Voyager 2 probe.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>One leading idea says the planets coalesced millions of miles closer to the sun, then quickly migrated outward.</p><p>But Orton said the newly detected hydrogen sulfide - and a strange lack of ammonia in the Gemini Observatory readings - suggest the planets actually formed farther out, then moved inward. (The ratio of the two molecules suggests the worlds were once even colder than they are today.)</p><p>To solve the question once and for all, Orton says researchers need to send spacecraft to plunge through the clouds of Uranus, not unlike how the Cassini probe <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/voyager-mom-linda-spilker-why-nasa-should-go-back-saturn-2017-9">dove into Saturn</a>. <p>At some point in every man's life he will have to pack a suit. In fact, he may have to pack up his entire life and be on the move for weeks. Neither of these circumstances are an excuse for not looking fresh.</p>
<p>"It comes down to wear-ability, versatility, and then style," says Colin Hunter, co-founder and CEO of men's custom suiting shop, <a href="http://www.altonlane.com/">Alton Lane</a>.<a href="http://www.altonlane.com/"></a></p>
<p>Hunter himself worked as a consultant for Bain before launching Alton Lane in 2009, and during his time traveling extensively on projects, he perfected the art of looking like a gentleman while living out of a bag.</p>
<p>So first, lets talk about wear-ability. Even if you're going to a warmer climate, you don't want any fabric that wrinkles easily. No linen or light wool - in fact toss the light fabrics all together. When it comes to shirts go with broadcloth or oxford over poplin.</p>
<p>If you travel a lot, you may even want to invest in a suit made with a material repels water, like <a href="http://www.dormeuil.com/en/cloth-collection/detailed-collection/innovative-cloths/aquaplan/">Aquaplan by Dormeuil</a>, which Alton Lane carries. </p>
<p>As for versatility - "It's all about efficiency of packing," said Hunter. "Leave the bold patterned suits or blazers at home... You want solid colors you can get more than one use out of - shark skin [gray] or navy."</p>
<p>Think seriously about the number of suits you need. They can be re-worn with the right easy-to-pack accessories - like pocket squares, ties, or shirts - to change their look. If you're on a business trip for about a week, bring up to 3 suits.</p>
<p>"I try to wear my dress shoes on the flight, even if I'm flying to Hong Kong," said Hunter. "You don't want to be packing shoe trees - [you need one] pair of lace ups, one pair of loafers. I try to stick with brown...it's more versatile, better with navy and gray."</p>
<p>If you must bring a black shoe, bring a loafer in brown. This isn't rocket science.</p>
<p>Hunter favors putting his suits in garment bag and carrying it on the plane. You can put your loafers and ties in there as well.</p>
<p>The garment bag thing is, however, a hot debate. Justin Jeffers, of <a href="http://www.thefineyounggentleman.com/">The Fine Young Gentleman</a> blog <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-pack-a-suit-2013-10">told Business Insider</a> that the key is really making sure that everything in your suitcase is tightly packed so there's no movement.</p>
<p>"When they are able to shift around a likelihood of creases (and thus ironing) increases...garment bags are a waste of money. You can pack your suit, shoes and shirts in your normal suitcase and they will emerge in a similar, if not a better state."</p>
