L&T Tech announces dividend of ₹14.50  even as revenue for the year dips by 3%

The current geopolitical scenario and the global trade barriers are creating opportunities for India and the government needs to encash this opportunity, a senior <keyword id="45475" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> official said. Acknowledging that the general slowdown in the economy has impacted the construction sector in India, <keyword id="6354919" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT">L&amp;T</keyword>'s Whole Time Director and CFO R Shankar Raman said that the government also needs to create an environment for multilaterals, with huge development budgets, to invest in India. "The trade barriers that are happening globally are creating opportunities for countries like us provided we are willing to encash. This will be a window which could soon disappear," Raman told reporters after announcing the company's quarterly performance.
 He said that multilaterals have a lot of developmental budgets available for spending and we are seeing a lot of Japanese credit coming in and few others also investing.
 "The FDI numbers have gone up. There are people who want to take call on India. What the government has to do is to create an environment which will make them feel comfortable for lending as well as investing. I think government can address some of these issues and industry can respond by moving forward," Raman added.
 He further noted that the economic agenda is coming to the front burner from the back burner for the first time in the current year. 
 "There have been a lot of political distractions. There have also been extensive industry consultations at various levels in the government and there is seriousness to revival. What is ailing us is soft consumption as there are no jobs that are getting created which has led to discretionary spends to be put on hold. If growth has to come back, if investment has to happen, it's important that consumption has to happen," Raman added.
 He also noted that it will take a year and year-and-half from now for things to fall in place and the situation to improve.
 Company's managing director and CEO SN Subrahmanyan said that government should speed up the pace big ticket size projects and ensure they are not stuck.
 "There are big ticket size projects announced like the river interlinking, road expansions, the high speed corridor, among others which are moving slowly. We do expect these to pick up as this situation cannot prevail long. There are various disputes and arbitrations which are now getting sorted out," he said. 
 Subrahmanyan also said that stretched balance sheets among their competitors sometimes has placed the company in the position of being the sole bidder for major infrastructure projects. 
 "There are orders where L&amp;T is the single bidder and hence, we have to bid in 2-3 rounds to win projects. In certain government projects, L&amp;T's pricing is below the government's budget. In such cases, the government has cut the scope of the projects to meet their budget constraints," he added.
 On expectations from the upcoming Union Budget, Raman said the government does not have enough resources to meet its plans for public spending. 
 "The government is not scaling down its plan but is struggling to figure out a way to meet the plans. So lead indicators from the budget may be some slippages in fiscal in the larger interest of economic growth, the financial responsibility mandate that they cast upon themselves can get more flexible in implementation. The other will be how much money they will borrow," Raman added.

India's largest infrastructure company says global trade barriers are opportunities that will soon 'disappear'

One such rare case is that of Deewan <keyword id="100080" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="housing-finance">Housing Finance</keyword> (DHFL). The debt-ridden company’s promoters asked the employees of its wealth management arm WGC Wealth <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/more-employees-looking-to-buy-out-promoter-stake-in-companies-119062100366_1.html">to purchase it</a>. This is after a debt of ₹1.2 lakh crore mounted and its promoters are keen on selling chunks of the company. Instead of appealing to investors, the company approached its own employees for help who came through. The deal has been closed today, according to a <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/dhfl-promoters-sell-stake-in-wealth-management-business-to-employees-119062700505_1.html">report by Business Standard</a>. Yet another financial services company employee Swapnil Pawar bought out the Indian arm of the US-based hedge fund, which he was heading. Pawar who is also the founder of Asqi Advisors, told Business Standard that they intend to set up the company as an <keyword id="138356" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asset-Management">asset management</keyword> services firm and expand it. The number of employee groups who are stepping in to save or take over their companies is rising, as is the number of troubled companies. The employees of the bankrupt clothing label Reid &amp; Taylor India too had attempted to bid for the company. However, <keyword id="6354457" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Company-Law-Tribunal">National Company Law Tribunal</keyword> which assessed their bid said that the investors backing the staff were unable to prove their net worth, <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/more-employees-looking-to-buy-out-promoter-stake-in-companies-119062100366_1.html">according to reports</a>. The many employees of grounded airline Jet Airways too had tried to bid for the firm, which too has gone into bankruptcy. However, no deal could be reached as the heavily indebted company eventually went into liquidation. Most such deals take place in the financial services sector where employees play a large role. However, India has very few stories to tell where employees bailed their companies out. In 1987, construction major L&amp;T was once a target of a hostile takeover by Reliance Industries headed by Dhirubhai Ambani. Kumar Mangalam Birla was also one of the people who had purchased stake in the construction company, in an attempt to take over his rival in the cement business. As a response, its own employees set up a trust and purchased the shares back and gained control.

Top stocks to watch — RIL, Future Retail, BPCL, Wipro, L&T, and others

<keyword id="151763" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ChrysCapital">ChrysCapital</keyword>, India’s largest and oldest private equity house, has raised $610 million for its seventh fund taking its assets under management to about $3.2 billion. The fund raising was supported by several of ChrysCapital's long-standing limited partners or LPs such as GIC, Asia-Alternatives and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Harvard+Management+Company&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Harvard Management Company</a>, along with new marquee investors in funds which included global insurance companies, university endowments and family offices. 
 
LPs are institutions, family offices and individuals who participate as investors in funds. 
 
According to the company’s MD, regardless the environment of fund raising being tough, ChrysCapital's latest mop up took just over a year. 
 
This was a testament to the firm's strong track record of generating good returns and realisations in a market where both have been elusive, he said. 
 
The company’s latest fund will continue to pursue the firm's strategy of investing in minority growth and select control opportunities across its key focus sectors - business services, financial services, pharmaceuticals/healthcare, consumer and manufacturing. It has already made two investments from this fund - the first in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=L%26T+Infotech&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">L&amp;T Infotech</a>, part of the industrial conglomerate <keyword id="821340" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT-Group">L&amp;T Group</keyword> and India's largest mid-tier IT services company, and in Hero <keyword id="232544" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fincorp">FinCorp</keyword>, the consumer finance arm of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hero+MotoCorp&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Hero MotoCorp</a>.

India's ChrysCapital raises $600 million from several investors

The impact of the economic downturn hurting the company is visible in L&amp;T’s share price which is down over 11% in the last one month. For the quarter ending June, its infrastructure or construction orders went down by 10%. And, even among those that they won were overseas orders. “Order wins were mainly from the airport sector, gold beneficiation award in Saudi, water supply and distribution order in Sri Lanka, a notable desalination plant order in Gujarat and an order for a defence telecom network,” L&amp;T said in its earnings press release. As of now, international orders contributed to 23% of its total inflow for the quarter. This may only increase going forward. “Company will focus more on the international market to offset the muted demand from the domestic private sector investment,” ICICI Securities said. Yet, this a near-term strategy only. In the long-run, the company which has manufacturing facilities, construction capabilities and equipment all in place will have to bank on India growth story. Where is the growth? A M Naik, the former chairman of the company valued at ₹1.94 lakh crore; and an industry doyen broke his silence to criticise the government. Not only did he reject government’s claims that the country will grow at 7%, he also punched holes in the credibility of the numbers. “We will be lucky if we can maintain 6.5%,”<a href="https://www.news18.com/news/business/l-says-a-6-5-growth-will-be-lucky-2254855.html"> Naik said</a>. While he wasn’t talking specifically of L&amp;T, it is true that the 81-year-old company’s fate is largely linked to that of government. L&amp;T has been a part of every large infrastructure project in India right from the recent moon mission Chandrayaan-2 to large defence projects to nuclear power plants in addition to highways and others. However, the slowdown is too severe and it is taking a toll on the company’s prospects. “Domestic private sector demand is under stress and the overall environment is challenging. Management believes the government will face several challenges to keep up the pace of infrastructure development in the current environment,” said an analyst report by ICICI Securities, after the company’s annual general meeting. Lost opportunities Naik had hoped that India could gain from the trade war between US and China, but those manufacturing opportunities have been lost to Vietnam and Thailand, while L&amp;T itself lost the opportunity to gain from possible trade expansion. “We were too busy with elections,” Naik lamented. And, it is not like India has no infrastructure to build. It is still in want of good roads, airports, railway stations and much more. The country which is facing heavy water crisis in cities like Chennai, and subsequent threats in Hyderabad and others might boost this infrastructure, and that too an urgent basis. “Government’s renewed focus on clean drinking water to act as a catalyst for growth in the water and effluent treatment business and ‘Make in India’ programme in defence would augur well for large players like L&amp;T. Larsen has vast experience in execution and sail through any tough macro environment,” said a report by JM Financial. L&amp;T indeed could sail the rough weather, but it sure intends to make pit stops in other countries, picking up the business it lost due to the slowdown at home.

When things go well, actively managed funds can deliver performance that beats the market over time. However, the returns are not guaranteed. Meanwhile, passive funds are suitable for investors who are looking for simple and low risk investment vehicles There is relatively lower risk in passive funds as here the underlying fund is just replicating the stocks of a particular index one has invested in. For example, there are passive funds that replicate the large cap, mid cap, and small cap indices. For some debt space, funds replicate performances of 10-year government securities and so on. One of the benefits of a passive fund is that it attracts a lower expense ratio as the fund manager does not use his skill or knowledge to pick stocks. He simply replicates the returns of an index. Generally, the difference between active and passive funds can be as high as 1-1.5% which eventually impacts the in hand profit of the investor. You would now ask active or passive? It is better to have a combination of both funds in your portfolio as one will fetch you higher returns than market and the other may give you relatively lower but stable returns.
