If that sounds a bit confusing, here’s the other side of the coin. In spite of the predictable and unsavoury mix of many elements, the movie has raked in some big money after an average-to-good opening on December 6. Day I collections stood at around Rs 9.5 crore, the <keyword id="1969490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biggest-opening-for-Shahid">biggest opening for Shahid</keyword> till date (Mausam comes second with Rs 7 crore nett on the opening day). R… Rajkumar has grossed around Rs 37.2 crore after the 4th day, keeping the audience happy and the cash register ringing. 
 
But there are loads of side issues to consider in this case. Surprisingly, much of the business came from the single screens while multiplexes saw a lukewarm response during the first weekend. However, R… Rajkumar has certainly romped past <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword>’s <keyword id="1952408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gangster-flick">gangster flick</keyword> Bullett Raja that grossed only Rs 25 crore at the end of Day IV. After the 11th day (it opened on November 29), the <keyword id="1960832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Sonakshi-starrer">Saif-Sonakshi starrer</keyword> is still languishing with a total collection of Rs 46.60 crore. 
 
Going by the numbers, Shahid’s all-new Dabaang-like <keyword id="44111" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Avatar">avatar</keyword> (a far cry from the sophisticated <keyword id="111697" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BADMAASH-COMPANY">Badmaash Company</keyword>) has managed to capture the audience after a series of flop shows. But critics have torn it apart and not without reasons, either. The movie veers between mindless violence and inane comedy while watering down some things as serious as corruption and custodial rape. 
 <keyword id="122490" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="film-critic">Film critic</keyword> and analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted: #RRajkumar movie review: Doesn’t work. It is Prabhu Dheva’s weakest Hindi film to date! Taran, however, acknowledges its box office success, saying: #RRajkumar sails safe! 
 
Film critic Anupama Chopra writes, “R…Rajkumar is ostensibly Prabhu Dheva’s first non-remake Hindi film but you’ve seen it all before… That’s not enough to take you through <keyword id="818790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-rest">the rest</keyword> of this bludgeoning movie. I’m going with one and half stars.” 
 
Others, too, are quite caustic about Shahid’s flick. According to Tushar Joshi of DNA, “Watch it if you are in the mood for a loud no-brainer that relies on formulaic over the top entertainment.” Shubhra Gupta (Indian Express) wrote, “It is nothing but blank putrid noise. R… for Rubbish.” Subhash K. Jha of SKJBollywoodnews comments, “R… Rajkumar is Prabhudheva’s rumbustious raga of the Rowdy.” 
 
But all said and done, the latest flick has helped Shahid come out of a three-movie span of either flops or middling performers. His earlier release this year was Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, an action comedy directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The movie earned around Rs 37.1 crore in India in a span of two weeks and was declared a flop. <keyword id="894544" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Teri-Meri-Kahaani">Teri Meri Kahaani</keyword> (2012) and Mausam (2011) suffered similar fate even after good starts and critical acclaim. Mausam, a romantic comedy, collected Rs 44 crore nett in its first week and ended its lifetime collections with Rs 69 crore nett. <keyword id="1101066" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="teri-meri">Teri Meri</keyword>, a rom-com directed by <keyword id="6530774" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="kunal-kohli">Kunal Kohli</keyword>, finished with average overseas business of around $2.3 million. At home, the movie collected around Rs 23 crore. 
 
Does it mean only age-old formula movies can churn out money as far as the Indian audience is concerned? Not really, but the reception of R…Rajkumar seems a bit paradoxical. However, the coming weeks are sure to reveal more about the trend, and we will wait and watch.

Bedi, the former Indian captain and one of the greatest left-arm spinners, died on Monday at the age of 77 after battling prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife Anju, actor-son Angad and daughter Neha. "Growing up our lives are moulded by the spirit, the gusto and sheer grace of people who we see and experience around us. Mr. #BishanSinghBedi was one of them. May God bless his soul &amp; thank u Sir for teaching us so much about sports &amp; life. You will be missed immensely. Veteran actor Satish Shah posted,"We have lost a precious jewel of Indian cricket in Bishansingh Bedi." Filmmaker Kunal Kohli said India has lost an icon. "#BishenSinghBedi will always remain a Legend. One of the greatest spinners in the world. The nation has lost an icon. A sporting giant," he wrote on X. Born in Amritsar in 1946, Bedi played 67 Tests for India and took 266 wickets with 14 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul. He was one of the most admired Indian captains and he led the team for nearly four years in Test cricket between 1975 and 1979 after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's retirement.

Filmmaker <keyword id="56295" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pradeep-sarkar" source="Orion">Pradeep Sarkar</keyword>, best known for the movie "<keyword id="14522" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parineeta" source="Orion">Parineeta</keyword>", passed away at a hospital early on Friday, his wife Panchali said. He was 67. The director was admitted to the ICU of Lilavati hospital in suburban Bandra following a fever. "He passed away between 3.10 am and 3.30 am at Lilavati hospital," his wife told PTI. He had viral fever on March 22. After administering some medicines his fever subsided but not completely. So he was rushed to the hospital, she said. "By the time we reached the hospital, his vitals started dropping. He was put on a ventilator in the ICU and was diagnosed with pneumonia. The infection attacked his lungs," the director's wife said. "According to doctors, he had many comorbidities which weakened his immunity. His blood pressure was fluctuating. Since COVID-19 hit him in July 2022, he was quite weak," Panchali said. Sarkar made his directorial debut with "Parineeta" in 2005. Some of his other directorial ventures include "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" (2007), "Lafangey Parindey" (2010), "Mardaani" (2014), and "Helicopter Eela" (2018). Many celebrities offered their condolences through social media. Ajay Devgn said he is unable to fathom the news about Sarkar's demise. "The news of Pradeep Sarkar's demise, 'Dada' to some of us, is still hard to digest. My deepest condolences. My prayers are with the departed and his family. RIP Dada," Devgn wrote. Filmmaker <keyword id="4684" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hansal-mehta" source="Orion">Hansal Mehta</keyword> shared a picture of the director on Twitter and wrote, "Pradeep Sarkar. Dada. RIP." Responding to Mehta's tweet, actor Manoj Bajpayee said he was shocked. "Ohh! That's so shocking! Rest in peace Dada!!," he said. Filmmaker Kunal Kohli remembered him as a sweet man. She was 71. The three-time National Award winner was not keeping well for some time. She was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital in Bandra last Saturday after she complained of breathing issues. She had tested negative for Covid-19. "She passed away due to cardiac arrest at around 2.30 am at the hospital," Khan's nephew Manish Jagwani told PTI. Khan is survived by son Raju Khan and daughter Sukaina Khan. Her funeral was held on Friday morning at a cemetery in suburban Malad. "We buried her at around 7 am. The prayer meeting will be held after three days," Sukaina told PTI. Mourning her death, superstar Akshay Kumar said Khan made dance look easy and accessible. "Woke up to the sad news that legendary choreographer #SarojKhan ji is no more. She made dance look easy, almost like anybody can dance, a huge loss for the industry. May her soul rest in peace," Akshay tweeted. Director Kunal Kohli, who worked with the choreographer on "Fanaa", remembered Khan as someone who stood up for people's rights. "She stood up for the rights of people. Never bothered who was a star or not. She said her bit unadulterated and from the heart. Brought biryani on every song and fed the whole crew so lovingly.We gossiped, we worked. Thankyou for the memories masterji. Saroj Khan love you always," he tweeted. In a career spanning over four decades, Khan, who was known as Masterji, choreographed more than 2,000 songs. Khan's best work was with actors Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, the prominent dancing stars of the 80s and 90s. Her parents migrated to India after the Partition. She started her career in the film industry as a child artiste at the age of three and later started working as a background dancer. The choreographer, who was born as Nirmala and later converted to Islam, learnt dance while working under film choreographer B Sohanlal. They got married when she was 13 and he was 41. It was Sohanlal's second marriage. Khan got her first break as an independent choreographer with Geeta Mera Naam in 1974 but it took Sridevi's Hawa Hawai song in 1987 film Mr India for her to receive acclaim as a dance choreographer of repute. There was no looking back for Khan after the success of the song. She choreographed Sridevi in films such as Nagina and Chandni . But it was her work with Madhuri Dixit that made her famous. Starting with Ek Do Teen in Tezaab , she choreographed Madhuri in Tamma Tamma Loge in Thanedar and Dhak Dhak Karne Laga in Beta and "Dola Re Dola" from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Devdas". She also choreographed Kareena Kapoor in "Ye Ishq Haaye". She last choreographed for "Tabaah Hogaye", featuring Madhuri from filmmaker Karan Johar's production "Kalank" in 2019.

The Bachchans, who are at Nanavati Hospital, shared their health update on Twitter, on Saturday night. "I have tested COVID positive. Shifted to Hospital. Hospital informing authorities, family and staff undergone tests, results awaited," Amitabh, 77, tweeted. "All that have been in close proximity to me in the last 10 days are requested to please get themselves tested," he added. Abhishek, 44, said both his father and he had had mild symptoms and requested everybody to be calm and not panic. "Earlier today both my father and I tested positive for <keyword id="8764728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID 19</keyword>. Both of us having mild symptoms have been admitted to hospital. We have informed all the required authorities and our family and staff are all being tested. I request all to stay calm and not panic.
