Padma Vibhushan was also presented posthumously to Prof Balkrishna Doshi for architecture. Padma Bhushan was awarded to Indian playback singer Suman Kalyanpur, who is known for innumerable hit songs in Hindi, Marathi and 11 other languages during a career spanning four decades. The President also awarded Padma Bhushan to Prof. Kapil Kapoor for Literature and Education. A former Professor of English at Jawaharlal Nehru University, he is known for striving to indigenise higher education by integrating Indian knowledge systems and establishing dedicated Institutes. Padma awards are conferred in three categories -- Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri -- to recognise outstanding contributions in various disciplines/fields of activities - art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. India's top civilian award Bharat Ratna has not been given to anyone since 2019. Announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year, the awards are conferred by the President at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, usually around March/ April every year.

"India has reached 43rd position in mobile broadband speed from the previous rank of 118," PM Modi said, adding that 2014 (when NDA came to power) is not a date, it is 'badlav' (change). Referring to various measures of the government, the Prime Minister said that access to capital, access to resources and access to technology is the government's priority. During the programme, PM Modi awarded 100 '5G Use Case Labs' to educational institutions across the country.

Aryaman Birla adds premium restaurants like Hakkasan, Yauatcha to group’s hospitality portfolio

Former <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword> does not have to appear in a <keyword id="6364736" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-court">Delhi court</keyword> on April 8, the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> said today. The top court has suspended the summons sent to the <keyword id="6378412" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="politician">politician</keyword> by a <keyword id="6362306" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CBI-court">CBI court</keyword> last month. The investigating agency has three weeks to respond to Dr Singh's petition against his summons. 
 Dr Singh, 82, had been told to make a personal appearance with industrialist Kumar <keyword id="286113" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mangalam-Birla">Mangalam Birla</keyword> for a case that says a coal field was illegally awarded in 2005 to Hindalco, a company owned by Mr Birla. At the time, Dr Singh held direct charge of the <keyword id="111919" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="coal-ministry">Coal Ministry</keyword>. 
The former PM has not been charged with any crime but is being investigated for criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, and corruption. He has denied any wrong doing. The CBI has twice said it would like to close the case against him, but has been over-ruled by the judge handling the matter. 
 "There was no criminal intent, it (the allotment) was an administrative decision and not an illegality," said the politician's lawyer, <keyword id="30182" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kapil-Sibal">Kapil Sibal</keyword>, who was also <keyword id="2789849" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telecom-Minister-in-Dr-Singh">Telecom Minister in Dr Singh</keyword>'s government. Two of Dr Singh's three daughters were present in court today. 
 The case known as "Coalgate" came to light in 2012 after <keyword id="222693" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="The-National">the national</keyword> auditor said 1.86 lakh crores had been lost because coal blocks were distributed without a transparent bidding process. Last year, the Supreme Court declared as illegal nearly 300 coal licenses issued by consecutive governments since 1993. Over the last few weeks, 32 of the coal blocks were auctioned by the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword>. 
 Judge <keyword id="2055026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharat-Parashar">Bharat Parashar</keyword> of the CBI court said in the summons to Dr Singh that "a well-planned conspiracy was hatched" to award a coal field in Odisha to <keyword id="105310" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hindalco-Industries">Hindalco Industries</keyword>, part of the $40 billion <keyword id="44373" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla Group</keyword>, which is chaired by Kumar Mangalam Birla. 
 
Hindalco has said that it made its case for the mining license "in a transparent and lawful manner".

Adani Power is shortlisted in short-term ASM framework Stage-I effective March 23, according to separate circulars available on the exchanges. The move also comes close on the heels of the two exchanges moving <keyword id="1125083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adani-group-stocks" source="Orion">Adani group stocks</keyword> -- Adani Green Energy and NDTV -- from the second stage of the long-term ASM framework to Stage I on Monday. Interestingly, both the exchanges had put Adani Power along with Adani Enterprises and Adani Wilmar under short-term ASM on March 8. However, these three stocks were excluded from the short-term ASM framework on March 17. Currently, there is no Adani group stock in the short-term ASM framework. The parameters for shortlisting securities under ASM include high-low variation, client concentration, number of price band hits, close-to-close price variation and price-earning ratio. The NSE and BSE said Adani Power has satisfied the criteria for inclusion under short-term ASM. Under the short-term ASM, the exchanges said, "Applicable rate of margin shall be 50 per cent or existing margin whichever is higher, subject to maximum rate of margin capped at 100 per cent, w.e.f. March 24, 2023 on all open positions as on March 23, 2023 and new positions created from March 24, 2023." Market experts believe that putting in this framework means intra-day trading would require 100 per cent upfront margin. The bourses also noted that the shortlisting of securities under ASM is purely on account of market surveillance, and it should not be construed as an adverse action against the concerned company or entity. Meanwhile, stocks of eight Adani group companies out of the 10 listed entities closed in the green territory on Wednesday. After taking a beating on the bourses, following the report by US-based short seller <keyword id="9916845" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindenburg-research" source="Orion">Hindenburg Research</keyword>, the group stocks had recovered. However, amid sluggish broader market trends, the group's stocks have declined in the last few trading sessions. The report had made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against it. The group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements. NSE, BSE to put Adani Power under short term ASM again

The market had been expecting a pause due to the banking sector crisis in the US. Benchmark index Sensex was lower by 274 points or 0.47% at 57,937 in the early morning trade on Thursday. Global Surfaces is the third stock to be listed on exchanges in 2023. The issue was subscribed 12.21 times on its last day. Global Surfaces processes stones like granite, limestone, marble, quartzite and travertine. The products of the company have applications in flooring, wall cladding, countertops and other items. These products are widely used for commercial and residential industries. Global Surfaces has two units, both located in Rajasthan. Majority of its operational revenues is derived from exporting its products to the US. In FY22, the revenue generated from exports to the US represented 99.13%. It also exports to Canada, Australia and the Middle East. Risk factors The company believes its sales from the US may decline because of rising competition and strict regulatory action. “Our sales from this region may decline as a result of increased competition, regulatory action, pricing pressures, fluctuations in the demand for or supply of our products or services, the outbreak of an infectious disease such as Covid-19, anti-dumping/trade policies or geopolitical tensions. For instance, sales of engineered quartz surface products from India are presently subject to anti-dumping duty of 3.19 applicable from July 2022 and countervailing duty ranging from 2.34% to 1.57% with effect from June 2020,” said the company in its RHP. Though anticipated, when it became official that the Melody Queen of India, <keyword id="31278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lata-Mangeshkar" source="Orion">Lata Mangeshkar</keyword>, is no longer among us, it hit the collective consciousness of the nation like a sledgehammer. The only consolation was that she may have passed on, but her voice, which moved our hearts and provided succour to our souls for more than seven decades, will forever be with us. Like all inspirational stories, Lataji's early struggle to establish herself in the 1940s is one that we cannot ever forget. In those days, she would take a BEST bus and travel from her south Mumbai home regularly to meet Naushad Ali at his Khar West bungalow or in the studios, hoping for a 'singing break' under the legendary music maker's baton. In the vicious Mumbai monsoon, she would come to Naushad's home, wearing her trademark sari, carrying an umbrella but totally drenched, shivering and barely able to speak, let alone sing. The music director would offer her piping hot tea and cookies to soothe her, but no songs ... yet ... . "I felt her voice was not yet 'ripe' for my style of music," said Naushad, the perfectionist, in a conversation with this writer. He was trying to justify not giving her an early break. "To improve her diction and control over words, I advised her to learn and practice Urdu, which she did ... and finally, she was ready to record for me." The first choices of Naushad were the reigning stalwarts -- Noorjehan, Suraiya, Shamshad Begum, Zohra Ambalewali, to name a few. With time, trained by her father, Dinananth Mangeshkar, Lataji grasped the maestro's advice and got her first major hit -- 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949) -- composed by her mentor Naushad. With it, she 'arrived' in the film industry. Thereafter, top music directors of the era wooed her, and they included Sachin Dev Burman, Husan Lal-Bhagat Ram (brothers), Ghulam Haider, Sardar Malik, Ghulam Mohammed, Jaidev, Salil Chowdhary, C. Ramchandra, Shankar-Jaikishan (partners), Roshan, Madan Mohan, M. Zahur Khayyam, Kalyanji-Anandji (brothers), Laxmikant-Pyarelal (partners), Sonik-Omi (uncle-nephew), Ravi Kumar Sharma or 'Ravi', Sudhir Phadke, Sajjad Hussain, Usha Khanna, and even A.R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan, Anand-Milind and Jatin-Lalit, among the younger crop of baton wielders. Producers and directors vied for Lataji's unique voice and style for their top heroines, especially because she could 'mould' her voice to suit most heroines. Without doubt, she had become the first among women singers, a position that Mohammed Rafi enjoyed among the men. Yet, there was a music director who remained aloof from Lataji -- with haughty pride -- and yet rose to the top echelons of the music industry -- the incomparable O.P. Nayyar. "I found Lata's voice too thin, too shrill, which did not suit my compositions," Nayyar had once said, claiming he was "the only music director who succeeded in Bollywood without Lata's voice". He added: "I needed a more vivacious, richer, healthier voice of, say, Shamshad Begum, Geeta Ghosh-Dutt, Asha Bhosale." One woman singer, Suman Kalyanpur, was blessed with a voice rivalling that of Lataji's, but she was content being in the shadows, yet she thrived on enduring masterpieces composed by some of the music directors. As Lataji's singing style matured under master music directors, her voice helped heroines who acted or danced to her tunes catapult to stardom, such as Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Ameeta, Beena Rai, Waheeda Rehman, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Tanuja, Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Nutan, Saira Bano, Sadhana Shivdasani, Babita Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi, Neetu Singh, Madhuri Dixit, and many others in the post-1980s, right down to the youngsters, notably, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Karisma Kapoor. After the exit of Noorjehan from India and the fading away of other stalwart female singers, by the late 1950s/early 1960s, Lataji was firmly perched on the top of the heap and brooked no nonsense from anyone -- producers, directors, composers, siblings or contemporaries -- attempting to clamber anywhere close to her roost. Bollywood is full of stories of how Lataji ring-fenced her position till the very end, often raising the hackles of her female peers, although male singers, such as Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Manna Dey (all deceased) and others, chose to maintain a professional rapport with her. Nevertheless, there were tales of how Rafi once bore the brunt of her "other side", or certain composers quivering as she gently declined to sing for them after they allegedly dared to commission some other female singers, for whatever reason. Of course, powerful filmmakers such as Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Kamal Amrohi, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra and the likes had no time for tantrums. Born on September 28, 1929, as the oldest child of a musically inclined family in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) -- comprising father Dinanath, Lataji, Meena (Khadilkar), Asha (Bhosale), Usha and sole brother Hridaynath -- she was tutored by her dad from the age of five and also acted in his musical stage plays, till death in 1942. Helped by a close family friend, Master Vinayak D. Karnataki, she got a foothold in singing and acting that year with a first Marathi song and a maiden Hindi song in 1943 before shifting to the film industry capital in 1945. In Bombay (now, Mumbai), she learnt classical music and continued singing the odd songs, till her big break with 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahinka Na Chhoda' ('Majboor', 1948), with full help from Ghulam Haider, whom she later described as her "godfather". With a colossus such as Noorjehan still around, Lataji continued her with a few more hits -- 'Aayega Aanewala' ('Mahal', 1949) and 'Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam' ('Andaz', 1949), heralding her entry with a bang in big-time Bollywood. Simultaneously, she sang in different Indian languages with aplomb, non-film songs, with her range encompassing classical, tragic, melodious, erotic, melancholic, light, mischievous, depending on the composer, or the heroine, or the song situation. After the seniors passed away or faded out, Lataji sang expertly and easily with the gen next of male singers such as S.P. Balasubramaniam, Amit Kumar, Shabbir Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, Anwar, Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam, and astounded her listeners with the seemingly "undying" power and youthfulness of her golden voice. Over the decades, she was decorated with a multitude of rewards and honours -- three Padma awards, five Filmfare Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award -- capped by the Bharat Ratna in 2001. More than that, state governments named awards and institutions after her. Lataji sang at prestigious live concerts or charitable events, enthralling global audiences, picked up more overseas accolades, such as France's highest civilian honour, Officer of the Legion of Honour, in 2007, briefly dabbled in high-end merchandise, such as signature jewellery and perfumes, launched a production and music house, and entered into international music collaborations. Death has only removed her physically. The legacies she leaves behind will outlive her for decades.
